Team CSC - Saxo Bank: Making History

Paris - Nice: Stage 7

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/PROFIL7.gif

A bumpy stage, and Schleck will definitely attack with only 5 seconds to lead.

Joining the action today, Ivanov of Team Astana has attacked his companions in the breakaway.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/ivanov.jpg

He is chased by, most notably Flecha, four riders.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/chasers.jpg

On the final hill, Van den Broeck and Moreau attack! Schleck is quick to follow and they are over the top of the final climb.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/schleckattack.jpg

Gutierrez is not in the lead group! If it can hang on Schleck will be riding tomorrow in yellow.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/GCbreak.jpg

Once again the breakaway is given a large gap and the power of with Flecha on the flat, Rabobank has got a rider in the lead.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/flecha.jpg

Speaking of Rabobank, Thomas Dekker goes on the attack in the GC group. Many try to follow, but no one can on this day.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/dekkerattacks.jpg

Victory for Flecha, who is showing form for the cobble classics.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/flechawins.jpg

Dekker leads home the leaders, but just behind him is Frank Schleck. Gutierrez tried to use his team but they just weren't strong enough.

Paris - Nice: Stage 8

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/PROFIL8.gif

A mountainous stage today, one where those close to victory will try their luck. Frank will just have to follow wheels today to keep his lead.

The break of the day gets away, all riders who have no threat to the GC.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/break-1.jpg

Loosli of Lampre sets a tempo too high for anyone else to follow on the first mountain and soon finds himself alone.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/loosli.jpg

At the bottom of the final climb, Loosli is just about three minutes ahead of the peleton. Ricco is hungry for a stage win and a possible win in the GC as well. He attacks right from the start.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/cobrabite.jpg

Team CSC - Saxo Bank sets a reasonable pace and he is kept within 25 seconds. Then Dekker, 2nd overall, tries his shot at victory.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/dekkercounter.jpg

Schleck see's Dekker leave the peleton and with it his chance of winning. He radios the team car for advice, but I tell him to wait and give the command to the other riders to work harder. Eventually Dekker and Ricco burn themselves out and Schleck blows right past them.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/schleckpwn.jpg

But it was at the very top of the climb and so a couple of other riders join him on the descent, including Ricco, Dekker, Rubiera and Joly. Still though, CSC worked hard to keep the peleton together on the ascent and now Caisse D'Epargne works hard to get it all back together and the descent.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/leadgroup.jpg

Loosli nets his team a great victory.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/loosliwins.jpg

And the peleton is altogether now, where Gutierrez takes the sprint for second.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/bunchsprint.jpg

Reaction: A great win for CSC - Saxo Bank. We came here hoping to hone form for later races and Schleck managed to dominate Ventoux and grap the leader's jersey in a hectic hilly stage.

A hilly course with some short steep climbs and a time trial that will decide it all. Some very strong riders are participating in this year's race. For Team CSC-Saxo Bank, we will have two leaders just as in Paris - Nice to start. Jens Voigt and Fabian Cancellara should be able to survive in the hills and thrive in the TT.

Tirreno - Adriatico: Stage 1

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/profile1.jpg

A few bumps at the end of the race should make this stage interesting. We will try to keep Haedo in the peleton for a sprint.

The normal break of the day gets established and rolls along the coast.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/break.jpg

The hills reduce the number of riders in the break, but the gap is not big enough, it will all come back together.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/reduction.jpg

Valverde starts his sprint with one kilometer to go. His legs might be a little bit more fresh than the sprinters after the three climbs.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/valverde.jpg

And he takes it easy, the Green Bullet wins the stage comfortably.

Tirreno - Adriatico: Stage 2

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/profile2.jpg

A decent sized hill will allow for attacks and most likely a reduced group finishing the stage.

The break goes away as always, but with 40k's to go, a group of strong riders from the peleton have a go. In it are Nocientini and Mazzanti, as well as Ardila and Nuyens.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/mazzantinuyensardillanocentini.jpg

About a third of the way up the final hill the big favorites try their luck. Sanchez is the first to attack.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/sanchez.jpg

Voigt decides to counter the move, and is followed by the rest of the favorites, including Cancellara.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/voigt.jpg

The lead group now looks as so: However, it is oddly missing Cunego, Valverde and Simoni, as well as Rabobank.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/leaders.jpg

Gadret, Cancellara Valverde and Sanchez join the group with only a couple kilometers to go.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/newkidsontheblockag2risgadret.jpg

Voigt sees the threat of Valverde and attacks immediately, hoping to catch the Spaniard out of breath after his effort to get to the lead group. Voigt powers away.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/voigtattacks.jpg

It pays off! Voigt takes the stage and the jersey. The group grew in size and now about twenty riders still have a chance at claiming the overall.

Tirreno - Adriatico: Stage 3:

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/profile3.jpg

The day ends with two rides up the famed Montelupone. No doubt riders will have to stay near the front to stay in contention. Cancellara and Voigt must perform.

The break gets away, no threat at all.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/break-1.jpg

The break is caught at the base of the first time up, and at the summit its still all together. But the plateau at the top of the climb provides an opportunity for the world champion to attack.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/bettini.jpg

It's too early and he burns himself out up the final climb. Young Rabo rider Gesink gives it a try.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/gesink.jpg

But he burns out too, and Cobo, along with Simoni, draft wheels until the final couple hundred meters where they sprint for the line.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/sprint.jpg

Victory for Gibo! A very important victory for his sponsors, Diqu- screw it too long! Wink

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/victoryforgibo.jpg

Voigt and Cancellara get stuck behind a lot of riders but wouldn't have had the legs anyway. They do remain a possibility for the overall.

Tirreno - Adriatico: Stage 4

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/profile4.jpg

Lots of small hills should get rid off the pure sprinters, but it is expected to end in a bunch sprint.

A decent sized break away escapes but the peleton refuses to let them have a large gap.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/break-2.jpg

Disaster for the Saunier rider Cobo, he goes down hard and with it his hopes are done. It's a rela shame because he was one of the few top 5 riders that could TT. Gadret crashes as well and has to abandon. Cobo will lose many minutes.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/cobocrash.jpg

Kroon attacks on the final climb and gets a gap, but starts to fade with the wind on the flat.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/kroonattack.jpg

With a couple hundred meters to go, Kroon has an advantage with Ballan and Pozzato chasing.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/sprint-1.jpg

Kroon fades and its up to Ballan and Pozzato who are neck to neck.

But the man with the golden locks takes the win.

Tirreno - Adriatico: Stage 5

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/profile5.jpg

This time trial will decide the final standings because the last two stages aren't hard enough to get large gaps.

Some good times are set throughout the day, but it finally gets around to the real contenders. Evans destroys the field and sits at first place.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/evans.jpg

Not far behind him, world time trial champion Cancellara comes through and is losing by 17 seconds at the first time check. He manages to gain some ground and finishes 4 seconds behind evans.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/cancellara.jpg

Next in is our other leader Voigt who isnt in the same league as the past two riders but manages to finish within 23 seconds of Evans.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/voigt-1.jpg

The top three aren't strong time trialists but with a couple seconds of advantage could hold on. Sanchez is the first one to disprove this. He is the best TTer of the three and has a dissapointing ride, +1'09"

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/sanchez-1.jpg

Last year's Giro champion can't keep up, crossing the line 56 seconds back.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/diluca.jpg

Finally, Simoni is out on the road, notorious for his poor skills alone. He re-afirms that suspicion and loses Tirreno, 1' 43" behind Cadel Evans, the winner today.

Tirreno - Adriatico: Stage 6

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/profile6.jpg

A couple laps around a decent hill should split the peleton, the question is: can Cancellara or Evans distance themselves?

The breakaway for today is huge, consisting of 16 riders. The peleton chases and keeps the gap manageable but the all of the riders in the break are working and they manage to hold a lead.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/break-3.jpg

A scary quartet of riders attacks the peleton and rips up a large gap: Mazzanti, Langeveld, Bettini and Nocientini.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/mazzantilangeveldbettininocientini.jpg

After driving hard and some win factor, only Bettini can make it to the leading group.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/bettini-1.jpg

The second time up the hill Rebellin attacks and the responders can't follow him. he is flying towards the lead group.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/REBELLIN.jpg

At the bottom up the climb Evans attacks and everyone follows. A large group of favorites sits in between the breakaway and the peleton.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/evans-1.jpg

Voigt attacks and when more favorites follow him Cancellara decides to go as well! Suprisingly Evans can't/doesn't respond! This could be it.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/cancellara-1.jpg

Just up ahead Florencio pulls out a very suprising victory ahead of Bettini.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/florenciowins.jpg

The sprint from the chasing favorites manages to bridge up to the breakaway and everyone will get that time. Its really strung out but Evans hangs on and won't lose time to Cancellara. However, Cancellara finished higher up on the stage and will stay in the jersey.

Tirreno - Adriatico: Stage 7

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/profile7.jpg

This stage is definitely for the sprinters, Cancellara has the edge over Evans by a big margin in this territory.

The hills at the beginning of the stage tears apart the break away, and these two riders remain in front. They will be caught.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/breaksurvivors.jpg

The sprint is setting up, and Cancellara wisely chooses Ballan, who has been up there in the sprints.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/ballanswheel.jpg

Wow! Cancellara unleashes his sprint and is leading barely. What started out as clawing for places on the stage may turn into a win. Ballan, Bettini and Rojas are close behind.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/cancellaraleads.jpg

It's clear with a couple hundred meters left that it will come down to Cancellara or Ballan.

i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk71/allez2121/Paris%20-%20Nice/tirreno/tie.jpg

The Lampre rider takes the stage, but Cancellara takes the time bonus and the race.
