Are you sure you want me to start against Armstrong ? You probably didn't know me in my Cyanide forum days.
1) Corticoïds in 1999, he was forgiven against every UCI rule for giving a certificate after the test result was known.
2) EPO in his 1999 TDF A-samples, 3 methods, 6 samples, 18 positive cases on 18 tests performed. Of course there was no B samples since it wasn't official testing, so it didn't or wouldn't hold in front of a court, but the results are there.
3, 4, 5, etc. ) I just realised I don't want to sit on this chair till tomorrow, explaining why it's clear enough Armstrong was on dope
edit : I'm French, but from Brittany, so I'm sort of a Brit...

a bretagne
i am one who trusts armstrong somewhat post-cancer
however, especially with such anti-armstrong press in france, your opinion would be kind of warped.
i dont think armstrong is 100% clean though. just after his first tour win

...anyways, the weakness of these calculation is how to define maximum treshold. Statisticly and if judged by history, you're definitely on to something, so imo it just weakens the argument to start talking about 410 watts, or any other maximum AT. Calculating human limits is not an easy science, and I've read scientist claiming up to 6.4 w/kg.
Just comparing riders performances is sufficient for me |

410 W or 5,9 W/kg is not the maximum on one mountain (6,4 would be ? maybe), it's on the average of the relevant climbs during a Grand Tour. And, as I already said, it's already way too high (but it's that high to prevent accusing a god gifted rider), 5,5 would be more suited.
Where cycling loses it's romantic aspect is when you dig into science.
C6H12O6 + 602 -> 6 CO2 + 6 H20 + energy
Which means "sugar" plus oxygen give water (sweating and breathing), carbonic gas (breathing) and energy, that's how the human engine works.
A certain human body can, according to its weight, store up to a certain amount of "sugar" (glycogen, sugar, lipids), whose usable amount depends from the heartbeat and thus the blood flow. A human body can with a certain hematocrites rate, lungs volume and breathing speed cannot use more than a certain amount of oxygen during a defined time.
Most of those parameters can be measured quite easily (that's what the blood passport is about actually), thus the performances you can expect from a rider are known.
Not easy to explain it with my lousy English, but biophysics is quite an accurate science, there's little room for miracles here. |
