Yes, his rivals are just as much the pure sprinters than the other hill-sprint guys - and too many times last year he did not join the sprint trains as a main sprinter, so hoping this can help with that. Lots of faster guys are older than him too, so it should also pay off more in future seasons.

Absolutely. There will be a lot to develop still. I hope to have Ackermann look like van der Lijke in the future too, but that will have to wait

Eritel Focus
Eritel joined the Vesuvio franchise as a sponsor this season, but kept a close interest in the directions of all former riders from the Eritel - Sonatrach squad.
Elias Afewerki moved across with the sponsor, and the rest were spread far and wide.
PT | PCT | CT | Elias Afewerki | Natnael Berhane | Amanuel Gebrezgabihier | Janvier Hadi | Issiaka Cisse | Gasore Hategeka | Souheil Khederi | Mekseb Debesay | Tesfar Teklit | Azzeddine Lagab | Mektel Eyob | Juan Van Heerden | Youcef Reguigui | Faycal Hamza | | Matala Seboka | Metkel Kiflay | | Daniel Teklehaimanot | Merhawi Kudus | | | Tesfom Okbamariam | | | Jaco Venter | |
But while this was all very pleasing, there was increasing dismay that a few remaining riders were not being selected, while at the same time worse non-African riders were picking up contracts just fine.
With the backing of Vesuvio, Eritel therefore moved to invest into an amateur team, securing a race calendar across C1 and C2, to provide an opportunity to these riders. Former secondary sponsor RwandAir were also unhappy that their key rider was also missing out, so joined the operation as a named sponsor.
8 riders were picked up, 4 as leaders, 4 with room to develop.
Eritel - RwandAir
Leaders:
| | MO | HL | SP | AC | | Jani Tewelde | | 64 | 78 | 77 | | Daryl Impey | | 70 | 77 | 76 | | Adrien Niyonshuti | 75 | 73 | | | | Mwangi Samwel | 76 | 67 | | |
Talents: (Maxed Stats)
| | MO | HL | TT | CB | SP | AC | | Anass Ait El Abdia | 74 | 75 | | | | 73 | | Olivier Lecourt De Billot | | 67 | | 76 | 67 | 74 | | Similo Nyoni | | | 77 | | | | | Jamal Hibatullah | 77 | 72 | | | | 70 |
Jani Tewelde will lead the outfit, with a point to prove to all the teams who turned him down. The team has secured deals with all the key C2 sprint race organisers, as well as of course the home race Tour of Eritrea, to provide him with that platform.
Daryl Impey left Eritel after 2016, in a move that helped to finance the training of Afewerki, but that dream move to Project: Africa fell flat, and what a travesty it would be for Impey's career to end on that sour note. He remains a useful rider for the harder sprint stages, and a race like La Tropicale Amissa Bongo could suit both him and the team well.
RwandAir's presence was necessitated by the need to secure the racing future of Adrien Niyonshuti, and joining him in the climbs is Vesuvio stalwart Mwangi Samwel. He ventured out for new opportunities in recent seasons, helping national team Kenya Airways both survive in PCT in 2014, then promoting to PT in 2015 - with a few Top 10s (including Kenya Mountain Classic). He now returns under the umbrella of the team where he made his professional debut, and performed so well. Top 22 at least in all Grand Tours, with 15th at the 2012 Giro d'Italia, while regularly playing a key support role for the Schlecks.
In the talents section Ait El Abdia has the skills to become Morocco's best climber. Lecourt De Billot took the Mauritius national title on the cobbles, and that is where his future lies. He came out on top against South African Jayde Julius, in an audition for the amateur squad. Nyoni rode for Eritel in 2016, and now receives a further chance to hone his time trialling skills. And with the need to sign a non-African rider, naturally it was a case of looking for riders of other overlooked nations - and Hibatullah surely has a professional future ahead of him.

Eritel continues its legacy, how cool is that?
Very good choices in the amateur round. I can see Impey taking wins in the right scenario. Good luck!

Niyonshuti is a nice pick-up. Had him on my list, too, but went for the Asian market instead.
Impey/Tewelde look good as well and this piece of Samwel's GT history is pretty cool.

It's nice to see Eritel back, and the inclusion of the Mauritian Le Court De Billot is a pleasant surprise.
I picked him up late last year to give him a start hoping that an African team would pick him up this year but there aren't any new ones in CT so he ended up falling down to an amateur contract.
I do prefer this future statline for him though which is the one I was trying to start him on the path towards.
Fl | Mo | Hi | TT | Sta | Res | Rec | Co | Sp | Acc | Fi | DH | Pro | 75 | 58 | 70 | 62 | 73 | 73 | 65 | 75 | 61 | 74 | 83 | 64 | 66 |
I think he would be more useful if he had more ability to survive hills and support his leader on the hilly cobbles and I like his fighter stat ending so high that he could be an attacking option if he's on a team that doesn't have a big focus there but still rides a few of them.
I'm a little surprised that Hibatullah didn't end up with Indosat, I hope he gets picked up next transfer season as it would be nice to see him continue his development.

Very strong team SN. My 2nd and 3rd priority sprinter combined in one team is pretty scary - Also some former professional climbers. Will be interesting to see what they can achieve. Especially old Samwel who was very good before the whole "ACC"-dimension came to live.

Yeah that's due purely to my incompetence First thing I did upon downloading the db was search for any new Indonesian riders; when I saw him I misread his age as 30-something so didn't bother. Glad to see him picked up by a team such as this though

Not sure what Impey's individual prospects are with Tewelde always in the team, but will be interesting to see. Both always the key targets for team. And amongst the familiar names, Le Court De Billot and Hibatullah are definitely worthy of development - count yourself lucky Eden
---
Leadership Priorities
Andy Schleck ()
Giro d'Italia
Tour de Suisse
Paris-Nice
With the time trial up Mt. Vesuvio, it was clear that the 2018 Giro would be Andy Schleck's last realistic bid to add one more Grand Tour title to his collection. Two further races for him, both having held past success, in Paris-Nice and the Tour de Suisse. Goos and Kirsch will be the key mountain supports, also Heymes, while Kittel, Jungels and Kneisky power the TTT unit - the latter also providing strong flat terrain support, along with loanee Mraouni.
Nico Keinath ()
Tour de France
Vuelta a Espana
Tour of California
Just as last year, we'll have interest in the GC in all three Grand Tours - this time with Keinath picking up two GTs, after enjoying a fine Tour last year. A trip to California for him as well, making April an important month for the team. All races will be a good opportunity to pass on experience to Caio Godoy as well. There'll be a return to Tasmania too, to check out the new route, having done so well there last year.
Nick van der Lijke ()
Ronde van Nederland
Rund um Koln
Vuelta a Espana
The focus of our training, and naturally the new Dutch tour will be a key target. Stage 1's uphill finish will need to be grasped, to hopefully ensure a good follow up on Stage 2 - and then to try to keep with the moves on Stage 3 of whichever top puncheurs are there rather than at Strade Bianche. Then we have the Rund um Koln where he should be a top favourite along with Demare and Kump. Finally, we decided to gamble on a Grand Tour and none other than the Vuelta a Espana. The hope is that Stage 8 to Gibraltar will be the one day of the season where he is top favourite, and if too many PT managers tried to be too clever in their planning, there could be many more sprint opportunities too. Elsewhere there should be other sprinting opportunites, and surely he can improve on a miserable best MSR performance of 62nd.
Ben Gastauer ()
Classique du Grand-Duché
Liege-Bastogne-Liege
- Balkans International
After a fantastic 2nd place last season, Gastauer continues his quest to emulate the victorious 2012 performance of Frank Schleck in our home race. Living in the shadow of the Schlecks is not easy, none more so than at Liege. A hat-trick of wins for Frank from 2010-2, but still Gastauer has yet to break the Top 10 there - so that is a really personal target. Finally, while competition is always tough, the PTHC bands do spread the favourites out slightly, with opportunities at Pais Vasco and the Balkans. Naturally, we have hopes for all other hill races he attends too.
Some other leadership opportunities we are looking forward to are the Dauphine for Marc Goos [obviously not with high aspirations]; the Tour de France sprints for Elias Afewerki, which should offer more chances than his leadership at Qatar and Afrique; plus the Deutschland Tour and other individual time trials for Marcel Kittel. Alex Kirsch continues his streak of consecutive Grand Tour starts, being joined at each by Gilles Heymes this season.

Hope to see him accelerating away from the Aussie on each occasion The former Jaguar-Eritel rider would have my support otherwise!

Interesting with Kirsch. I hope Vasyliv can beat him in one of the GTs. Not a surprising decision for Schleck, but it will be interesting to see if he can win.

Caio Godoy - ProTour Leader
22 year old Caio Godoy just stunned the cycling world by upsetting all of the favourites at the 2018 Badaling International. He becomes the first ProTour Individual Rankings leader of the season.
Caio is one to watch for the future, on the harder climbs at least, and is now in his third professional season. His first season was spent with Compal-Merida, a team who did not show much faith in his abilities - only offering him four races. A best result of 4th from a breakaway, at Stage 6 of the Tour of Southland.
It was not an ideal start, but a late transfers move to Vesuvio ahead of the 2017 season put him back on the right development track. Results wise it was not a noteworthy year, with Top 100 often being a good achievement - and even at the Tour de l'Avenir his 22nd placing was worse than 12th in the previous year.
But it all paid off, as finally in 2018 his skills have clearly improved. There's more to come, but that first professional victory has arrived already.
For the rest of the season, he will kindly give Ponzi, Bakelants, Sagan and EBH a chance, and abstain from competing in any further hill classics. He will make his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta, followed up by the Tour de France. And with Paris-Nice and Tour de Suisse as well, he has the opportunity to support Andy Schleck, and learn from the best.
Elsewhere at Badaling, Peeter Tarvis delivered a great debut performance for the team - on loan from Novatek. He finished 19th, while Gastauer was 17th, and Paterski 32nd.
