As so often on the first stage of a race, there is a fierce battle to get in the breakaway. Evaldas Siskevicius attack several times without any luck.

Finally after 40 km of failed attempts it is Patrick Shaw (Avanti - IsoWhey), Tyler Magner (UnitedHealthcare) and our Delio Fernández forming the breakaway of the day, getting some TV time and some probably useless sprint points.

With 12 km to the finish, Shaw set in the final desperate acceleration but the break is over.

Over the last 10 km the pace is very hard, it is Tinkoff and Katsuha setting up their sprinters. Peter Sagan wins in front of Alexander Kristoff and André Greipel.
Sagans first win since winning the World Championships in Richmond 27/9 last season.

Our best is Benjamin Giraud 8th, a good result for us, Yannick Martinez did a good lead-out for his teammate. But the peloton split and many from our team lost time.

Not ideal for the captain to lose time on stage 1 but a good start for Benjamin!
