Tour de Normandie – Stage 5
So this is the queen stage of this tour. I need to come through today. But I think I can. The stage will be decided on the 4-km climb about 20 kilometres from the finish and at this morning’s team meeting we all agreed that I should try an attack here, because with the form Casper is in he could easily sit with the pack all the way, but there’s no way he can attack up that climb.
Oredsson, Pivois, Chainel and Terweduwe formed today’s break of four riders.
Pivois was the strongest rider and he pulled away from his companions up the road while I was beginning to feel great back in the pack. I had diamond legs today.
Pivois started his solo ride with some 90 kilometres left so no way he would make it and with 30 kilometres to, just 10 kilometres before the crucial climb, he was reeled in by a 30-man bunch, in which I only had Jacob Moe with me.
Jacob Moe lead me to the front on the climb, I was gonna attack very soon.
Suddenly I heard somebody yelling something behind me. I looked over my should and saw that Boom was accelerating, so I took off immediately.
Boom couldn’t keep up on the climb and I crossed the top with a clear gap, but with 15 kilometres to go I let him come back. Because I though, first of all I can beat him in the sprint easily. Second of all, he’s behind me in the GC and third of all I wouldn’t be able to keep the lead on my own.
Behind us a group of six formed with former race leader Jalabert, my countryman Reihs, Bole, Gazvoda, Baugnies and Lelay. Me and Boom worked very well together and we kept the gap static at about 40 seconds, but the finale became a bit tactical, so we lost some time there and we would also end up with the same time as the group behind.
I started the sprint ahead of Boom.
Soon I realized he couldn’t keep up so after a few seconds I got back in the saddle and strolled home quite easily. I was so thrilled I can’t explain it. I had taken the overall lead ahead of Boom and I’m really on a high right now. Now I hope I can keep the lead. I will be absolutely devastated if I can’t.

Tour de Normandie – Stage 6
A short flat stage today and my main concern is just getting through safely as I reckon I have a comfortable lead in the GC right now. Things can change though but let’s see. If a non-dangerous breakaway goes away we’ll surely let it stay clear so my opponents can’t claim boni seconds.
Rakusa, Vold, Mazurkiewicz, Senekovic, Chainel and Kristensen went away to form the break of the day a none of them is even close to me in the GC, so we will take it easy.
Their gap was 5’07 with 45 kilometres to go and just to stay in charge my teammates set a solid pace in the pack.
It looked as though the six riders would make it but with 3 kilometres to go the gap had come down drastically.
I followed Michael Reihs and we surged past the breakaway riders with Casper on our left side.
I tried to go on the inside in the last turn.
But neither me nor Casper could do anything to Reihs who took the stage to bag the 3rd Danish win on the trot. I ended fourth which means that Reihs is now only 8 seconds after me in the GC.
Boom crashed before the finish and lost a lot of time.

Tour de Normandie – Stage 7
After yesterday’s stage I’ve grown a little nervous as Reihs is suddenly very close to me in the GC. This means that we will definitely let a break stay clear if it is non-dangerous.
Today’s break looked as though it would make it. Enaes, Cujnik and Grzeziólkowski formed the break.
With 45 kilometres to go the group had 13 minutes, I couldn’t see anything stopping them now. Cujnik went solo as his companions run out of steam with 50 kilometres to go.
But Cujnik couldn’t keep up either and suddenly his break came down drastically. As he entered the final 3 kilometres it was clear he wouldn’t make it and after a split in the pack I was seperated from my opponents who were all up front.
Cujnik was caught with just under 1 kilometre to go while I’d managed to gain contact but I was still way down and Reihs were gunning for a podium.
Casper took the win ahead of CCC’s Jewoski and Designa’s Michael Reihs, which means me and Reihs now are on the same time in the GC with him taking the jersey because he finished the day ahead of me today. I finished 10th today and eventhough I’ve lost the jersey I’m confident I can win this tomorrow.

I think he's about 40. But that's before Normandie has ended and I hope I can take maximum points here of course

We they're both 72 in sprint, but I just have to catch his wheel then I should be able to get past.

Tour de Normandie – Stage 8
The last stage and this could litterarily go down to the wire. Me and Reihs are on the same time in the GC, so none of us can feel confident now.
Ingvaldsen and Korsak went on the break.
This meant the pack could fight it out for 3rd and 2 seconds in the first intermediate sprint. Me and Jacob saw the opportunity and he managed to lead me out to claim 3rd. I’m now provisional leader.
Ingvaldsen went solo with 55 kilometres to go and a gap of 8’30.
With 20 kilometres Ingvaldsen still lead by 5 minutes but then the pack hit a section with hard cross-wind and I was caught off guard and Reihs were up front.
We almost managed to bridge up but Reihs spotted the danger and in an inspired effort he took the front and totally ripped the race apart.
I’m in big trouble now, my team worked very hard but it’s almost impossible to come across in the strong cross-wind.
Reihs were joined by Bonsergent, Lequatre and Vanmarcke and they soon came across to Ingvaldsen.
While my group were still trailing, my luck didn’t change. Andrej Omulec crashed in a turn about 5 kilometres from the finish. I had to break hard and I lost control and went down myself, also brining down Jacob Moe and Bichot of Agritubel.
While I was losing the overall win the 4 riders up front would fight it out and it was Bonsergent who was the strongest. Reihs took 3rd so he would definitely win it. Bonsergent was the only who could endanger my podium spot in the front group.
After the front 4 a group of Casper, Gazvoda and Vermeltfoort crossed the line 51 seconds down before the front of the pack came in at 1’28. Luckily no gaps were registered from the front of the pack to when I crossed the line, so I will end second in the GC.
Eventhough I lost out again I’m not as upset than I was in Montenegro. Today unexpected factors decided the race and that’s something you can’t prepare for and when you take into consideration that I crashed in the finale I’m very happy with 2nd in the GC, also because we achieved a sponsor objective. I’m not sure where I will race next, it’ll be decided at the next team meeting.

Pretty disastrous final stage, the headwinds seemed to catch you out a couple of times in Normandie.
Your win count needs updating in your sig btw, crash count too.

I hate cross-winds they are always tearing the peloton apart and all my rivals are in the front group and i'm in group behind, I hate. So A_Schleck I know how you feel, when you lose it all just because of some winds.
btw. nice update

April 18
Right now I have been out of competition for almost three weeks as Normandie ended March 31, and I haven't been racing since. [img-r]https://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/PDR-ruten-2008.jpg[/img-r]Partly because I was very sore after my crash the final day there, but also I had this break scheduled as I had also been racing quite a bit prior to Normandie and I want to be able to peak later this year. The race I'm aiming my entire season at from now on is Post Danmark Rundt. Our sponsors demand that we have a rider in the overall top 3 in the GC and at the last team meeting, our team manager Tom Breschel gave me the privilege of leading the team in the biggest race in Denmark.
So far I have only been racing in x.2 races and the fields are pretty weak in those races so I don't gain much experience from racing here. The team is primarily racing in x.2 races in the first part of the season but in a few months we are racing in the bigger x.1 and x.hc races, where Post Danmark Rundt belongs to the last category. My form is pretty poor now and I won't be able to win races right away, so I'll most likely just race as teammate for the in-form riders in the team.
My season has been great so far with three wins and 2 times 2nd overall in two different stage races, so I'm very happy. I'm currently the 38th best rider on the Continental Tour with 108 points. I'm the best ranked from my team, so I own bragging rights right now.
The plan from now on is to take part in races as domestique and gradually build on my form and let it peak in Post Danmark Rundt. Then after Denmark I will sustain my good form as long as I can until I tire completely out. That way I hope I can end in the top 20 of the Continental Tour and divert myself some attention from the ProTour teams. So far I haven't heard anything, but at the end of the season I'm confident I'll have something on the table.
My next race is on April 20 in Ireland in the one-day race Shay Elliott Memorial, where I will most likely act domestique for Jacob Moe or Niki Østergaard.

Shay Elliott Memorial
After three weeks of absence I’m back racing again. I’m out of form but I have surprisingly been selected captain today, because with my abilities I’m better at coping in this terrain. But because of my form I don’t have the full confidence from my team right now, so we decided to go with the early break with Stevenson being our representative.
13 other riders were with him.
Recieving full back-up back in the pack.
Skil-Shimano whose captain today was Lhottelerie, seemed to have the breakaway under control but at some point the gap started coming down and eventhough attacks from the favorites, started by home-favourite Paul Griffin and countered by Lhottelerie and Kai Reus, came from way out, the breakaway was going to make it today.
Martin Keizer of Rabobank CT tried to get away with 10 kilometres to go, but it was going to end in a sprint.
Unfortuneately Stevenson was badly positioned.
German Phillipp Klein of Thüringer Energie Team took the win today, with Stevenson in 10th. I decided not go with Reus, Lhottelerie and Griffin and I ended 45th on the day as there wasn’t really any point in sprinting.

Le Tour de Bretagne Cycliste – Stage 1
In Shay Elliott Memorial I had confirmed that my form is quite poor right now, so I’m not expecting anything huge from my side, until Post Danmark Rundt I’m demoted to domestique and I will be that in this race too, where we will be looking to Brian Vandborg for GC glory. It’s a 7-stage race with the first today being a 11-km time trial. Next up is three flat stages and then on the 5th and 7th stage we hit some hilly terrain, with another short time trial in between. I might be looking to do something on the 5th stage and perhaps even the flat ones, but let’s see.
In Normandie I was in great shape, so I didn’t lose that much on the short time trial there, but today I lost 1’18 on the winner of the stage, Lars Boom, who’s obviously still on form. Brian did good finishing 4th on the day.

Le Tour de Bretagne Cycliste – Stage 2
Today is more or less flat at it’s going to end in a mass sprint. I have been assigned to lead out Martin Pedersen today, because he’s in much better form than me. There’s a lot of good finishers in this race and we’ll probably try to stick close to Alex Rasmussen today.
Unfortuneately Martin lost my wheel in the sprint and I had to go all in myself from an impossible position.
I was on Popov’s wheel but the race was going on way up the road as Frenchman Vachon came shooting past Nordhaug and Kristoff, with Jos van Emden in his wheel.
I kept sprinting in hope of a top ten finish but it was not gonna happen for me today. Looks like my Normandie legs are way gone.
Vachon held on for the win ahead of van Emden and Kristoff.
It hasn’t been our season so far and today wasn’t our day either as Vandborg crashed some 5 kilometres from the finish and had his GC aspirations go right out the window.
So now it’s up to me and Martin who were the only riders from our team to finish in the pack. Unfortuneately the two of us are also the poorest time trialists on our team.

Le Tour de Bretagne Cycliste – Stage 3
It’s flat again and once more I will try to lead Martin to the front when the sprint is on.
Mertens of Davitamon went on a solo break today.
This time Martin stayed on my wheel and I got him to the front in a quite good position, now it’s up to him to finish it.
I was exhausted from my effort and I nearly had to let go of the bunch.
Up front Martin was struggling to keep up with the fastest rider and he wouldn’t be in contention for the win today.
Our Danish rivals, Designa Køkken did brilliantly having two riders in the midst. Oredsson leading Jørgensen and Arashiro of Meitan.
Oredsson was leading out Jørgensen but he couldn’t pass his teammate so Oredsson claimed the stage ahead of the Meitan team’s Arashiro. Martin finished 8th.

Le Tour de Bretagne Cycliste – Stage 4
This is the last flat stage of the tour. Martin is getting better and better and I think he can pull off a top result today if I manage to lead him out properly like yesterday.
A group of seven broke away in the early stages.
They were caught with about 30 kilometres to go. 10 kilometres later our nemesis of the season showed its ugly face once again. Yes, I’m talking about cross-winds.
All of our riders were cut off and Martin’s chances were dissapearing up the road where a pack of some 20 riders were riding away.
We almost caught them with 8 kilometres to go, but then the front group split in the hard wind.
Race leader Lars Boom didn’t make the final cut eventhough he was in the front group before it split.
Nordhaug started the sprint, but stage 2 winner Vachon came shooting up the right hand side.
And Vachon claimed the win ahead of Miyazawa and Alex Rasmussen.
Luckily no gaps were registered as we had done a good job relaying in the pack to close out any time differences. So ahead of tomorrow’s hilly stage I’m still sitting decently in the GC.
