Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 1
A short 5 day tour, this race will be used primarily as a warmup for the Tour of California coming up later this month. We hope Michael Rogers will have a good showing here.
Our team:
Leader: Michael Rogers
Sprinter: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Teammate: John Devine
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate: Adam Hansen
Teammate: Tony Martin
Teammate: Craig Lewis
Teammate: Fabio Duarte
Stage 1 is a flat 100km course set up for the sprinters.
The first part of the race was extremely uneventful, but soon the pace picked up and the riders were flying around the tight corners of the course. Then disaster struck with 10 km to go.
Boasson Hagen touches the wheel of the rider in front of him while trying to get position for the sprint and goes down hard. This causes a chain reaction and a mass pile up.
Boasson Hagen gets up quick and pushes hard to try to rejoin the pelaton. He just manages to do so to not lose any time. Meanwhile, in a sprint devoid of some of the favorites, Kenny Van Hummell eeks out the win over Steven de Jongh.
Some of the names caught in the crash include Graeme Brown, Fabian Wegmann, Juanma Gárate, Thomas Dekker, Haimar Zubeldia, Rigoberto Urán, Davide Rebellin
, Samuel Sánchez and Denis Menchov. All lost nearly 3 minutes to the lead group.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 2
Another sprinters stage, the late "mountain" aren't big enough to scare even the most hill-impaired rider.
High Roader Tony Martin went on the break this morning and held on just long enough to take the first mountain sprint, which was enough for him to earn the mountains jersey for tomorrow.
The sprint wasn't extremely well organized and there was a lot of jostling prior to the first riders taking off. Boassen Hagen was in the front of the trains and had to start his kick earlier than we would have liked. He was passed by several riders just before the finish, but was able to hang on for 4th.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 3
This stage has some hills in it, but it also has a long flat portion after the hills that could cause the stage to end in a mass sprint today. We'll try to stay near the front and see what develops today.
A break went away like normal, and by the time the second hill came up the pace was quite high chasing the break down. As the pelaton crested the top of the climb it fractured into two groups, the lead one with about 20 riders in it.
Rogers was the only High Road rider in the lead bunch, and he let the other teams push while the group went down the incline and hit the flats. The lead expanded to over a minute and a half and it became clear that this would probably work. With about 6km to go the group had thinned out to about 15 riders, Rogers included. Rogers worked his way up the relay train and when he got to the front he attacked!
Rogers built up a lead of just over 10 seconds when the sprint began with 3 km to go... would it hold?
Rogers pushed hard. The other break riders were sprinting after him, but they weren't the best sprinters in the world either. 2km to go. 1 km...
It was enough. Michael Rogers wins the stage and takes over the leader's jersey, though several riders all have the same time at the top of the standings.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 4
Though we have some early hills, the long flat portion afterwards sets this up as a stage for the sprinters.
We sent Adam Hansen in the break today to force the other teams to chase it down and save our teams energy. THe others complied and it came down to another mass sprint.
Boasson Hagen got on Haussler's wheel, and it turned out to be a good decision, earning Edvald a second place finish. Rogers didn't want to risk anything so took part in the sprint as well to avoid losing his jersey. He notched a suprising 10th place result.

Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca - Stage 5
The final stage of the race, this slightly hill route could have a variety of results. We're going to try to keep from having a mass sprint by attacking on the final hill... hopefully locking up the race for Rogers.
A break of nine riders got away early and we didn't chase until it was too late to catch them... but we did make sure that they'd be caught soon enough to preserve a race victory for Rogers. Rogers led an unsuccessful attack on the final hill that was pulled back in... so we coasted into an easy race victory after the break fought for the stage...
or so we thought.
What??? SECOND!!! Apparently Rogers finished 4 spots behind the race winner in the final sprint... and by some odd mathematical equation that gave him the race victory.
As the team manager I took full responsibility for this loss. I should have had Rogers save his attack for the 8 km mark to make sure he finished ahead of the other contenders.
On the upside, Rogers is pissed off heading into California and looks like he has something to prove. I think this may work out well for us.
((I was so mad I didn't export the results... I just powered my PC off... so sorry for no detailed results)) |

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 1
The Tour of California is a big race for our team... getting noticed in the US market is very important to our sponsors. In fact, they want us to win the whole thing and we don't intend to disappoint.
Our team for the race
Leader: Michael Rogers - Our primary hope for a stage win, Michael is in good form and is eager.
Free/Co-Leader: George Hincapie - Big George is racing in his first race of the year. He'll be supporting Rogers, but he has the freedom to make a move whenever he wants.
Sprinter/Co-Leader: Edvald Boasson Hagen - Also in great form, Edvald will be counted on for a win if the mountains don't end up separating things enough for Rogers and time bonuses become critical.
Teammate: John Devine - Mountain helper. Could be in the race for the U-25 jersey.
Teammate: Adam Hansen - Been a great teammate all season. Great chemistry with Rogers.
Teammate: Tony Martin - Good worker.
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao - Will be looking for the mountains jersey.
Teammate: Diego Ulissi - Mainly here for experience... will be worked hard to chase down breaks.
The prologue of the tour of California is a very short time trial.
And Cancellara is in the field. Anyone want to take a guess at the results?
Anyone?
.
.
.
.
Cancellera wins of course. A strong start for High Road with a second and third place finish.

Vuelta a Andalucia - Stage 1
This race is primarily being used to bring some of our cobbled riders into form and to get some experience for some of our young guys. Bernhard Eisel wanted to ride in this race, so it will kick his season off.
Team:
Leader: Michael Barry
Sprinter: Bernhard Eisel
Free Rider: Roger Hammond
Teammate: Fabio Duarte
Teammate/Leadout: Marcel Sieberg
Teammate: Craig Lewis
Teammate: Bert Grabsch
The first stage is a hilly route with an uphill sprint toward the finish. This of course favors... absolutely nobody we have entered in the race.
In the end, only Barry could keep up with the lead group, and he didn't have enough to outsprint any of the others left.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 2
Mostly flat, the late hill could play a part in the race. We think we might attack there and see what happens.
An early break went away and we sent Ulissi to the front of the pelaton to make sure they didn't get too far ahead. Just as the rest of the pack kicked it into high gear, stage favorite Paolo Bettini crashed to the pavement. Horrible timing... he'd be unable to catch the pelaton now that it was moving at speed.
As the pack hit the bottom of the hill, High Road mounted a big attack. Rogers, Hincappie, Henao and Devine all break away.
The gap extends to 50 seconds as they approach the crest of the hill... could it work?
The pack starts pushing hard to pull them back. They obvously don't want Hincappie and Rogers to get any time here. They pull the High Road group (and all the others who were part of the earlier breakaway) back in on the flats after the hill.
High Road moves into position with Boassen Hagen in a disorganized pseudo-train at the front of the pelaton.
The other sprinters seem to be back a bit with 8 km to go. Hincappie sees the indecision and attacks! Boasson Hagen follows on his heels.
They get a gap... but can they hold on? The pack is closing in as the sprint begins.
Boasson Hagen surges away for a dominating win. Hincappie holds on for second ahead of the surging Pelaton.

Vuelta a Andalucia - Stage 2
Another hilly stage with an uphill finish. While not suited to our riders, we'll try to take a more agressive approach and attack on the final hill... maybe we'll get lucky.
The break got away and was pulled back and we just sat and protected Eisel and Barry, waiting until the finish. At the end of the stage Barry placed his attack.
But as we feared, the other riders had more gas in the tank and Barry was passed in the sprint. We did get 3 riders in the top 10 though, so a definite improvement from stage 1.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 3
The flat back end of this stage should insure it comes down to a sprint. We're going to attack the early hills to hopefully take the mountains jersey, then try to set up Boasson Hagen for the sprint.
Henao was able to get into the break and nobody else contested the mountain sprints. He easily took control of the mountains classification.
Henao just hung on the back of the break after the hills and we let the other teams chase the break. As soon as the sprinting started it was clear Hushovd was the best man today. Boasson Hagen fought hard to get his wheel but just couldn't keep pace. Still, a nice third place finish.

I like the way Hincappie is built in this DB. He seems to be able to pull some of the same tactics he does in real life stage races to get good results. The late attacks to try to take stages actually seem to work every now and then. |

Vuelta a Andalucia - Stage 3
Fairly flat, the late hill probably isn't enough to cause the sprinters any issues.
We simply protected our sprinters then looked for the best wheel as we came down the stretch. Eisel got Steegmans' wheel and decided it would be best to stay there. Sieberg searched for a wheel as well... but ended up settling for Eisel's.
In the end it looks like they picked well. While no win, getting two podium places is always nice.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 4
Classified as a mountain stage, the slopes are pretty gradual in this stage. Despite that, this is a pivotal stage for the race. We'll be setting up Rogers to hopefully take over the lead here.
We were in a bit of a pickle with strategy here. Boasson Hagen held the yellow and the pelaton would likely expect us to chase down any break. We're not confident enough to use all our energy chasing and still be able to mount a decisive attack on the final climb though.
Our solution? We sent two in the break. Henao would get mountain points, and Tony Martin would conserve energy and look for the stage win if the break was allowed to escape. Martin ended up being the highest placed GC rider in the break, so we were in a can't lose situation.
The other teams were forced to work to bring the breakaway back, tiring them out and allowing us to rest. It was setting up well. As the ascent of the final climb began the pelaton was just a minute back. Some of the favorites attacked and we followed suit.
The group attacking moved quickly and passed the initial breakaway. Tony Martin was able to keep pace with the attackers, but Henao was fading back to the pelaton. Then he simly lost control and caused a big pile up.
The break solidified into a group of 7 in the downhill. Devine, Rogers and Martin were there from high road, Fredrigo of Bouygues Télécom... who has a bit of sprint... Frank Schleck of CSC, Christian Vandevelde of Slipstream, and Andrew Bajadali of Kelly Benefit Strategies.
We knew we'd have trouble in a sprint, so Devine attacked late with Rogers countering to try to get a stage win. Martin was just barely holding on so couldn't help. It looked good at first.
But Fredrigo was just faster than everyone else and surged past to get the win. Still a nice 2-3 from Devine and Rogers.
Boasson Hagen finished 3rd in the sprint amongst the pelaton, giving High Road 4 of the top 10 places in the stage and 3 of the top 6 places in the GC. Rogers has the leaders jersey, Devine has the young riders, Boasson Hagen has the sprinters and Henao has the mountains jersey. High Road is leading the team classification as well.
See that sponsors? That's how High Road performs in a race our sponsors care about.

Vuelta a Andalucia - Stage 4
Some early hills, but pretty much just a flat sprinters stage.
And it came down to a sprint today. We tried to use Hammond to set up a train for Sieberg and Eisel... but it just didn't quite work right. Steegmans takes another one.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 5
Though it has no real big climbs, it's almost constant hills. Our lead isn't as big as we'd like so we're going to be very agressive today. With riders like Vandevelde and Schleck close behind we can't afford to be passive.
We sent Hansen and Henao, using a similar strategy to yesterday. Hansen ended up being the highest placed GC rider in the break this time... so again our rivals were forced to do the chasing.
About 25km from the finish we responded to an attack... and responded in force. We thought this might be the pivotal move.
The ones the instigated the attack fell back though. We caught up to the break and then passed it, with only our own break members being able to keep pace... the lead group contained the yellow, red and blue jersey's... ALL HIGH ROAD.
The pelaton knew this was bad news... six riders in a break from one team is kind of obvious. They turned up the pace and caught our guys. But then with a bit under 8 km to go and a slight hill, we decided to give it another go.
We got a gap! The pelaton picked up the pace again, but it was clear that our earlier attack had weakened them somewhat. It was closing very slowly. As the sprint began they had finally gotten their act in order, but Rogers still looked solid.
Rogers got across... Boasson Hagen got across... and Big George just edged out a chasing Stuart O'Grady. A 1, 2, 3 finish for High Road!

Vuelta a Andalucia - Stage 5
The final stage of the race. It's possible the late hill could break things up, but more than likely it will just knock some participants out of the final sprint.
In the end, Rojas pulled away prior to the sprint with just a strong effort, then easily claimed the sprint.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 6
The time trial here should only help Rogers. His nearest competition aren't nearly the timetrialists that he is.
In the end Cancellera won easily and Rogers took second, further extending his lead. Devine lost a big chunk of time though and surrendered his young riders jersey to Boasson Hagen. Devine will still get to wear it tomorrow though as Boasson Hagen will be in green.
