I would have Contador out of the current lot. As for past riders Lance Armstrong 7 tours do i need to say more. If it wasnt a pro team then i guess basso would be a good shout as i believe he is not allowed to ride in a pro tour team for 2 years after his ban.

Deadpool
He is not allowed to ride for a UCI registered team (so all pro teams at any level) at all, but his suspension is up at the end of this season.

CrueTrue
What ratate means is that Basso can't ride for a Pro Tour team after his suspension due to the Ethical Codex of the Pro Tour teams.

A bit of a farce when you consider the riders who have been caught before but allowed to return to pro tour level after 2 years Rolling Eyes

Well, he was a good enough leader to win the Tour.

When it comes down to it, Lance was a selfish guy too. It worked pretty well for him. Indurain was selfish too.

I'm not sure what you mean by leader. To me it's the guy who everyone on the team works for in the biggest races. It's not the "great clubhouse guy" to pull a phrase from baseball. It's the guy the entire team is built around.

You may want some older guys to provide guidance... but they aren't the team leaders... they're experienced helpers.

Heeeeck no. Induráin is possibly the most unselfish example you can find. Lance is the perfect example of a selfish person though.

The guys who provide guidance aren't necessarily the ones making decisions. In the T-Mobile team of 2005 and 2006, Kessler called all the shots and tactical decisions. Yes, Kessler. Explains a lot, doesn't it?

Lance was not completely selfish, because for the tour he was the complete and absolute leader, but for the rest of the season he was practically a domestique.

He demanded control over everything. He even decided what brand of coffee the team drank.

Yes, off the road he was, but not always on it (plus, I heard a story about Ekimov getting pissed at how much of a control freak he was, and throwing a ridiculously idiotic looking proto-type hat for the team to wear in the trash, and then cursing at him in Russian Grin)

yeah, but leadership is much more than just on the road.

Here is a great quote from Boardman that sums up the Miguel Indurain as a human being -

"Indurain makes me sick because he's actually a really nice guy. You can't actually work yourself up, there's no hate involved, no anger. He's a really nice bloke and a true champion." — Chris Boardman

Contador all the way

Deadpool
Why, he might get you some good results, but you can't depend on him as a leader, the way you could depend on a Boonen or Leipheimer

So Leipheimer, 3rd in last years tour, makes a better team leader than Contador, 1st in last years tour? Eh?

Leader, not rider SN, he was well liked by all his teammates at Gerolsteiner and Discovery
