Michael Van Stayen joins our team as 3rd leader. He is a unique rider who excels in sprints from reduced groups after as he can climb over hills better than any other top sprinter.
With Mark Dzamastagic and Janis Dakteris he has the material for a stunning leadout train in place that will surely try to wreck the sprinter field a couple of times throughout the season.
4. Goal : Win Milan - San Remo
Milan - San Remo is seen as opener of the annual cycling season by many fans. Cycling fans throughout the world love to watch the battle of sprinters vs. puncheurs vs. rouleurs and the final kilometres are legendary.
With the signings of Michael Van Stayen, Greg van Avermaet and Toms Skujins the team has multiple options for selecting a captain for this race and no matter how we decide we must be considered one of the favourites in this race.

Let's Pull A Reverse Chelsea
Evonik added loan riders No. 4 - 7 to next season's squad:
Olli Kulppi was an important domestique last season for our team leader Tom Boonen and having improved in the last months it is expected from him to be a vital help to Greg van Avermaet!
He brings his swedish friend and team mate Philipp Lindau with him who is a useful domestique on the hills.
Nur Amirul Marzuki joins our team as first Asian cyclist in team history. Marzuki is an allrounder who will be used as a domestique on cobbles and hills but he also can also climb longer mountains or win sprints out of a small group.
Isaac Bolivar is yet another talented cobbler who was brought in for a couple of race days. He can also race in a TTT when necessary. He's the first South American cyclist in our team's history.

Chances of winning MSR are not all too great, with Bewley present, but if anyone can do it it's Van Stayen. You have a fantastic setup for numerous races, with those sprinter-like types who excel at flat and other areas.
I think you may well be among the top teams going into the month of May.

I may have a fantastic setup for numerous races but I also have a setup which sucks for half the races without any (point scoring) climbers or time triallists.
I agree with you that I may be among the top teams going into May but I think I really have to be up there before Grand Tours coming up and many climbing heavy stage races like Dauphine / Swiss, Colombia, Liechtenstein or even the TTT event are coming very late. All of them dont suit my team at all.
I picked MSR because I prefer to not chose riders according to goals. MSR is so wide open with lots of different riders having a shot at the victory that I would not need to adapt my targets a single bit. If I would not have Van Stayen then GVA could have been someone to fight for the win or maybe even Dzamastagic if i am lucky.
A top sprinter like Swift could do the job as well as a puncheur like EBH so no matter which of the available rider I would have signed - he would have at least a chance to get close to the goal.

May i remind you who came second last year?
Nice team knockout, even with that "controversy".

Evonik Focus On The Hills
It's still offseason but it's never too early to work on the foundations for the upcoming season. Evonik - ELKO already went into a training camp in Belgium to improve their riding on the hills. It is no surprise that hilly races are important for the team as half the team is specialised on this terrain but it is speculated within the team that the team will be even stronger on the hills once they return from the training camp.
It hasn't been leaked yet which rider(s) improved but it is speculated that a new leader benefitted the most from it.

Last season Tom Boonen was the only one who could follow Sam Bewley to the Velodrome of Roubaix. After not coming to an agreement during renewals we invested big time into a replacement for him. He's still unproven but we trust Greg Van Avermaet to be stronger than ever and hope that he will be the one to break Bewley's dominance on the cobbles. He's supported by Latvian's best cobbler Andsz Flaksis and Lithuania's best cobbler Gediminias Bagdonas. Olli Kulppi and Arnaud Grand are both familiar faces with the team already and return to the team for a second year on loan. Isaac Bolivar might also hit the road at some point if he isnt too busy with his studies.
The 2015 world championship races were a punch into the face of Latvian Cycling. Not getting into the RR World Championship race is not nice but not being invited for the B Worlds Race to make place for glourious cycling countries like Cuba, Iran or San Marino was a humiliation that must never happen again. The first step towards that goal is to support our world class puncheur Toms Skujins as much as possible to promote Latvian cycling both in our country and in the world. He'll receive support from fellow Latvians Andris Smirnovs and Indulis Bekmanis as well as from Evaldas Siskevicius and loaned in Philipp Lindau.
For the first time in history we are actually forced to race in the mountains. While the majority of the team prefers other terrains we have brought in Pawel Poljanski to form an aggressive trio with previously loaned out Michel Koch and Andris Vosekalns. Their task is to show our jersey in the morning breaks, go for KoMs and hunt stages in the Grand Tours.
There's one thing that Michael Van Stayen certainly is not: Average. Coming straight outta trainingscamp Van Stayen is a nightmare to the rest of the peleton. Other riders try to copy him but for now he stays the one and only mutant uniting the best of sprinters and puncheurs. Last season he suffered from bad leadouts from Greg Van Avermaet but since Greg will not lead him out - well, not often - this season we're sure that he will improve his production from last season. His main leadout sprinters will be Janis Dakteris and wonderkid Mark Dzamastagic who is himself a very unique rider capable of sprinting and beating the sprinters with a late attack. Dzamastagic will lead a couple of races himself on Pro Tour level but also on HC level where he wants to repeat his Down Under Classic victory from last season. Talented Maris Bogdanovics might jump in as backup leadout at times.
A team is not complete without some guys to do the dirty work if you dont want to end up in the dirt. These guys normally get the glory they deserve but they are important team member nevertheless. We have loaned in Gabriel Chavanne, who is one of the best prologue specialists in the world, but many fail to recognize his potential due to not being that well on longer time trials. He will also pull in turn after turn at the front of the peleton in flat races for Van Stayen. Nur Amirul Marzuki is one of the most versatile riders around. He can ride on every terrain which makes him an important domestique for Greg, Toms and Michael.
Gatis Smukulis, Gianni Meersman and returning Yannick Stoltz are riders that can lead the pack over hundreds of kilometres at a high pace. They are the ones to make other teams suffer and it only needs some wind from the right direction and they can destroy a race for many team leaders and superstars. All 3 of them are versatile as well. Meersman is proven when it comes to passing cobbles while Smukulis is a good rider on hilly terrain or when a small group sprints for the win. And Yannick Stoltz is one of the most determined fighters to have hit the road and he will deal with a race calendar which might be the heaviest race calendar of all professional cyclists.
When we scouted Krists Neilands we were fascinated. He seems to be the most talented Latvian cobbler in history. Signing someone like him was an opportunity we could not miss so we had to take the bull by the horns and secure his signature.
This season he is loaned to our friends from Valio - DeLaval as we think that this moove will help him for his future development the most.
And that's our team for the upcoming season. Previous to transfers we expected to battle against relegation but our sponsor set the Goal of finishing inside the Top Ten in the Team Ranking. Lacking a strong climber will likely hurt us a lot in the rankings but we have strong leaders for all monuments. What do you think is realistic for our team?

You have a very exciting team - Oh and I want Siskevicius! Almost got him a few seasons back, but then someone noticed him - unfortunately
You are favorite on several terrains, and it will be very interesting to see just how well a team without any mountain riders can actually do (Discounting a 77MO rider, as most teams have 82+)...
Greg van Avermaet should be top 5 potential on cobbled races aswell as TONE and Milano San Remo. Besides that he should be lucky to get a bit of grabs, but he have a very strong cobbled team besides him to help, so he might podium here and there - maybe even winning a race.
Same goes for Michael van Stayen. A very strong rider, who could win most sprints - but usually doesn't. Instead he will be a very dangerous rider on GC races without mountains and TT's - And I believe there are a few of those. You have some very strong engines to keep things together for a sprint finish, so that talks in his favour. The leadouts might be great, might not. It really depends on what the PCM engine think of the acceleration compared to flat stat. But Dzamastagic should be a very strong leadout of course.
Toms Skujins is a top 10 puncheur - probably a top 5 one also - But clearly lacking TT skills will make him have to go fairly early on GC races. Not that it by any means discounts him as a GC favorite.
And finally - I absolutely love Yannick Stoltz whom I had when I have a second team who just picked up leftovers - Incredible to see what he have become, and with a great prologue stat aswell. I don't think he had that back then. Chavanne (despite not being your rider) is also a fantastic asset to have. Cheap in wages but could be amazing on prologues and score decent points from flat races like Qatar.

Thanks a lot for your comment!
Let's go through your points:
- Siskevicius : Great rider and it will be difficult to convince me with an offer
- I fully agree with you. 77MO riders can be discounted
- Leadout: I'm not sure how strong my leadout will either but i got VS too late to add a strong leadout. I am confident that he will be delivered near the front when the leadout start to sprint (if he gets leadouts which isnt a given anymore after all those trainings) and then I've got to pray.
- Stoltz: Fully agree with you on him. He's awesome! He got a big update this season. His energy stats and prologue stat were improved massively and i think also his hill stat a bit. No idea who (or why he) had the idea but i loved it
And next year he is finally maxed so he can replace Chavanne as hunter of surprise results in prologs

Schedule Announcement: The GTs
We're hours away from the start of the season which seems like the perfect time for an announcement for some of the biggest races of the season: The Grand Tours. We present our team's lineups for each of the 3 3-week stage races:
The Giro will mark our Grand Tour debut and to show the world of cycling that we are worthy of a spot in the sport's highest division we want to chase as many stage wins as possible. It's a dream to start our first season with the maglia rosa and the first two stages offer any opportunity for Michael Van Stayen to claim it. He's assisted from his usual leadout of Mark Dzamastagic and Janis Dakteris as well as Maris Bogdanovics in case of any crashes. Bagdonas and Stoltz should be valuable domestiques on the flat while Smirnovs and Lindau are his support on the hills.
Goals:
*** Stages, Stages, Stages
** Points Classification
* Wear Maglia Rosa on a stage
The second GT of the year and it's time for Skujins to shine. 6 hilly stages let us think that a stage win or two might be possible here for him. The squad is filled with riders who are well suited for breaks with our three climbers and our two promosing Baltic puncheurs Siskevicius and Smirnovs here as well. Stoltz is another rider who can deliver from breaks or late attacks but he is the guy to target flat days for his attacks. A wild Maris also made the team selection.
Goals:
*** 2 stage wins
** wear the KoM jersey
* Top 30 GC
For many teams Le Tour de France is THE highlight of the season. For us it is just one race of many. We are mainly here to give our youngsters a chance for valuable experiences. Our main goal is to get a lot of TV time and our chosen way is to agressively target as many breaks as possible.
Our three best climbers are here as well as talented youngsters Marzuki and Bekmanis with loaned in cobblers Olli Kulppi and Arnaud Grand present as well.
Gabriel Chavanne completes the team and he's a very interesting guy to watch having an ouside shot at the opening prologue.
Goals:
*** wear KoM jersey
** join 10x BotD
* win a stage
Special Sponsor Goal: Win GC

January saw the debut of Evonik - ELKO as a WT team. Following the signing of national hero Toms Skujins the expectations in him were huge and his first chance to prove his abilities came right on the opening day of the season in China. He missed the decisive move but did well to finish 7th.
Skujins in the chase with Gastauer & Van Garderen
A few hours earlier 8 of our riders were racing in Down Under Classic. After last season's highlight win by Dzamastagic he could not defend his victory but finished 16th. Overall, the race was a success with all our starters finishing Top 50. Maris Bogdanovics did well to finish 15th.
Dzamastagic close to a Qatar stage win
Later in the month, Michael Van Stayen gave his debt for our team in Qatar. He was close to a victory on stage four being only beaten by Ben Swift. Due to bonus seconds collected on the first five stages he finished 8th in GC which is an okayish result for us. Prologue specialists Gabriele Chavanne and Yannick Stoltz were out of the GC battle due to strong wind on stage 5 (Chavanne) and a crash on stage 2 (Stoltz).
February will be one of the months for our team. 6 PT races are on our schedule and in each of them one at least one of our 3 leaders will start.
5. | | Omloop Het Nieuwsblad | PT | 2 | 6. | | Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne | PT | 2 | 12. - 18. | | Tirreno-Adriatico | PT | 7 | 14. - 21. | | Paris-Nice | PT | 8 | 16. | | Classique du Grand-Duché | PT | 2 | 27. | | Milan San Remo | PTM | 2 |
Greg Van Avermaet will start his season in Belgium in the cobble double header consisting of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne.
Our leader for Tirreno - Adriatico will be Toms Skujins who will attempt to show that he's considered a world class puncheur while Dzamastagic can go for the flat stages.
Greg Van Avermaet will lead the sprints in Paris-Nice. With many top sprinters & hilly sprinters expected to start in Italy at the same time he might have a good opportunity for a stage win.
Michael Van Stayen will ride the Classique du Grand-Duché hoping to finish top ten.
Our team for San Remo
The race to close the month is also THE highlight of the season for our team. It's our win goal and we will bring everything we have to deliver big time here. It's the one race where our three leaders race together. While the favourite is arguably Sam Bewley we think that Van Stayen has a good chance as well. Depending on how the race is ridden he might get a leadout from Greg Van Avermaet and Mark Dzamastagic which might be one of the strongest leadout trains of the season.
Puncheurs have won in San Remo in the past and Skujins is there to follow any big moves and a couple of very strong rouleurs complete the line-up.

That's a great San Remo team, reckon you could do great anyway the wind blows! Good luck this month, some big races for you.

A bit of wind might be beneficial for me but I'm not sure i like the added randomness for such a huge race. Still, I'm prepared

I´ve mostly seen MSR as a ripped apart race in PCM with heavy sidewinds on the ligurian coast. That should your team even better. Though in my eyes Skujins is a little wasted here, as he has really no good attacking stats for this. Guys that are attacking at a race at MSR are puncheurs/finesseurs with a strong FL/HI combo. And now say hello MSR winner Greg van Avermaet

I know that Skujins might be wasted here but I had 4 spare race days left for him so it was between adding two classics that don't fit well or removing two classics and add another stage race.

That MSR team is God-like. A rider to cover pretty much any race scenario, it's ridiculous.

Really brutal lineup for the first monument of the year, you should have it all covered. Shame they will get destroyed by migty Mikhail Ignatiev, but you can have other podium spots.

Spoiler - the idea behind this post is that i wanted to know more about the history of my (former) riders & i also thought this might be more interesting then "dull" race / monthly reviews from February races
- I hope i can extend this to a series of posts by adding one every couple of months but no promises
- Feel free to correct me if you find any false information
- @Avin: Sorry for not replying to your post. Wanted to do that with the next update but that one just never came
| Episode I : Aleksei Saramotins |
First Name: | Aleksei | Last Name: | Saramotins | Nationality: | Latvian | Seasons with the team: | 2014 | Age when joining: | 32 | Key Stats: | 75SP, 71CB |
Throughout his career Aleksei Saramotins never was a superstar. Despite being on the professional racing circuit since 2008 he did not race in a single WT race. Instead he gained a reputation as attacking journeyman who delivered valuable helping work for his leaders. During his one season with Evonik he had a lasting impact on the team development.
His first notable appearance came when he joined Zenmind - Evolution (formerly Agritubel) in 2008. He was part of multiple break attempts in races such as Tour de Georgia, Tour of Britain and Paris - Tours but his groups were never capable of keeping the peleton at distance. His overall performance must not have been good enough as he did not find a team for the 2009 season.
Saramotins wins an intermediate sprint against Ben Day, Nico Keinath, Carlos Maya and James Lewis Perry in the 2008 Tour de Georgia
In 2011 he joined newly founded Team Pokerstars focussed on sprints and cobbled classics. He was intended as part of the leadout train for world class sprinter Erik Mohs and as domestique for cobble races. His team had a well balanced squad for those races with Roger Kluge, Kevin Van Impe and Anthony Geslin so domestiques like Aleksei Saramotins or Nick Ingels were given no room for own results.
There was only one instance where he was allowed to go for a result himself. Announced team leader Samuel Dumoulin crashed on the opening stage of the Tour Down Under and finished the race with an injury so Dan Holloway, Marco Guillen and Aleksei Saramotins could go for it. Saramotins finished the first stage won by Mark Cavendish as nineth behind stars like Paolo Bettini, Maxime Vantomme or Juan Van Heerden.
Not being satisfied with his role within the team he signed with a new German team for the 2012 season: Team Trilux - Falke. Announced as a leadout and domestique for cobbled races he outperformed the team's expectations by finishing 8th in Nokere - Koerse beating his former leader Kluge. In the following classics he often missed crucial splits and finished in the top 25s. Not so in Grand Prix Herning: At some point during the mass sprint Saramotins may have hoped for more but finishing 5th behind winner Jerome Giaux, Matti Breschel, Toms Stamsnijder and wonderkid John Degenkolb was still the biggest achievement of his career.
He also joined some breaks. While he was reeled in late after his attempt in the Vuelta a Burgos (he still finished the stage at 10th) he was more successful on the second stage of the Giro del Capo. Originally a 7-man group Aleksei Saramotins, Matti Breschel and Jaume Rovira could survive until the finish line. Rovira denied Saramotins his first victory of the career but Saramotins could still enter the podium as new owner of the yellow jersey. He quickly lost it to Rovira on the next stage but it is a proud day in Aleksei's history.
Saramotins wears the leader jersey on the 2012 Giro del Capo Stage 3
Before the 2013 season he signed with Ekspla-Cision Cycling Team which was to become his most succesful season as a sprinter. And on his very first day of racing with his new team in San Luis he showed everyone that he should not be underestimated. Due to hard fighting team mate Vitauskas Kaupas the big name guys had to go early and Saramotins could beat the likes of Greipel, Kupfernagel, Avelino or Allen Davis in a mass sprint when he finished 2nd behind Mirko Lorenzetto. He added many more good mass sprint results like a 6th place in San Luis, a second place in the Vilnius GP and a 2nd a two 5th places in the Ronde van Belgie resulting in a fiveth place in GC.
He continued to live his attacking spirit and got very close to his first career victory multiple times. After many waves of attacks by the leaders of various teams in Trofej Porec a group of five sprinted for the victory. Saramotins finished third behind Arnaud Coyot and Jonas Vangenechten. He also got a 5th place in the GP Yekaterinburg when fellow escapee Eduard Vorganov won. However, the closest he came to a victory was on stage 3 of the Baltic Chain Tour. He formed a group with Tanovitchii, Hopman and young cobble-specialist Zepunkte. It was the opportunity of a lifetime for Saramotins to take a win in not only his home-country but his hometown as the group hold a four minute gap to the peleton with only six km to go but then it got too tactical and the group sat up completely allowing the peleton to come back. Saramotins only finished 8th on the day on the saddest day of his career.
Aleksei Saramotins attacks during the 2013 Trofej Porenc
In 2014 he joined once again a newly found team: Evonik - Signal Iduna. Signed once again as veteran who can deliver Simon Geschke some leadouts he got a (shared) leaders role for cobbled classics. Still on the search for his first career victory nobody could know that his career year was just ahead of him at the advanced age of 32.
Early in the season (during Vuelta ao Algarve) he delivered two perfect leadouts to Simon Geschke which Geschke converted into the first two stage wins in team history. Unfortunatelly, only text reports exist of this race as the TV coverage went broke.
Later in the season, the classic season had just started, the GP Oudenaarde would crown his career. Attacking after half the distance with Rory Sutherland on the Oude Kwaremont Saramotins could quickly close the gap towards the morning break. After dropping most of his companions it was the Paterberg where Saramotins went solo for the last 28 kilometres of flat roads. A group of favourites came close again but they couldnt catch Saramotins who finally could celebrate his first career victory. Timothy Dupont even made it a 1-2 for the perfect Evonik race.
Saramotins with the decisive attack on the Paterberg in the 2014 GP Oudenaarde
He carried the form of his life into the later part of the season. He added a 15th place at Tro Bro Leon, a 8th place in Hainlaite and a 9th place in Barcelona but the second highlight of his season was the Lincoln GP. When Cedric Lebris from arch rival Team TomTom and Silvio "Supertalent on a unicycle" Herklotz attacked 83km before the finish Saramotins jumped behind. Quickly gapping the earlier break members the trio entered the final lap together. After a couple of attacks only Cedric Lebris and Aleksei Saramotins were left to battle it out together. It went down to the cobbled climb on the last hundred meters where Saramotins outsprinted Lebris and took home his second classic victory!
Saramotins wins the 2014 Lincoln GP ahead of Cedric Lebris
He ended his season with a couple of strong leadouts. e.g. on the opening stage of the Herald Sun Tour where he delivered a perfect leadout for Geschke who took the win home while Saramotins finished third himself.
The 2014 season was his only season in black and yellow. It was a short stint with the team but he left a remarkable and lasting impact on the team. He was responsible for latvian company ELKO noticing the team in the first place and thus, the team would likely look a lot different today if he never had joined us.
Originally, he planned to race one more season with Evonik and use their wildcard to Paris - Roubaix to retire immediately after his first PT race day but it came different.
Due to financial struggles after the deals for Matej Mohoric and superstar Tom Boonen he was traded to (again) newly found greek outfit Elta - Hellenic Post in 2015.
He was used as domestique only and maybe due to his age he could not repeat his performances from the previous season. One single breakaway appearance in Circulo de Juarez was his rare opportunity to fight for his own result but the sprinter teams were too strong that day.
Many expected his retirement after the season but he still felt not ready for ending his career and was transferred to Bulgarian based Vivacom in a stunning trade. As in the previous season he was limited to domestic work with (until now) just one chance to shine.
On the final stage of the Tour of Langkawi he was part of the break of the day. They worked well together and the group could barely survive the chase of the peleton. With 1.5 km to go it looked like only Ruffoni and Gudsell would battle Saramotins for the win but Saramotins completely collapsed and finished 17th - while Ruffoni, Gudsell and fellow former escapee Bassirou Konte finished on the podium.

We'll have to see what he can still add in the remainder of the season but with the widely expected retirement at the end of the season this might have been the final shot at repeating his 2014 victories.
It is rumoured that Saramotins will join the Evonik coaching staff as soon as he ends his career to raise the next generation of Latvian cycling.
