(At the time ofc, I also had to keep a second eye on Baugnies, we all know the transfer strategies.. )
In the end, they have solid back up stats and have capability of doing strong in most races, plus more race days. We'll see how it works out this season. Baugnies can prove awesome.Van der Sande and Modolo as well.A nice team that should stay up. |

Strava 2.0: Bug Fixes
Strava is ready to go into its second season as we have fixed minor calibrations and is ready to launch. Oh, also the squad is good and running.
Marco Zanotti joins us from the FA market in a last bid. He will be a great helper to Modolo's and Van der Sande's ambition. Meanwhile Marzuki will leave us a for a season to join our friends over at Evonik - ELKO to gain some experience and brag about riding in PT.

I don't have any promo ambitions at all actually. From what people say, PCT is the most fun. In PT meanwhile, it'd be just a fight for survival for my squad.

Mano-a-mano: Jérôme Baugnies
Coming out of the transfer season, we sat down with new signing Jérôme Baugnies to talk about his reason to join Strava, his ambitions for the upcoming calendar and his thoughts on Strava.
Jérôme, have you already tried out your new kit?
Yeah I have. It's not the typical style you see in the peloton but I'm glad we get some black bib shorts. That makes the dirt of the pavé less noticable. It also adds to the nice collection of jerseys I have gathered so far, like QuickStep or AMEX.
Are there any other reasons why you signed for Strava?
I'm now a life-time premium member I was told? Receiving lots of great boni. I also always like their approach to the cobble races. They caused some real fuss on the circuit last year, some stuff of that even I heard too. I already made the step down from PT last year and now I know what I need to do to score big in PCT. It didn't work out that well at Amex. I was cool switching teams to a newly promoted PC team because I knew we'd have the same goals.
Which are?
Making life tough on Summerhill, slayin' that guy. I have some really good support in Langeveld, Gaudin, Van Wyk. I'll need that really because Summerhill is one tough sob to crack. My goals are the goals of the team. I want to be present for their top races. Ultimately I want to perform in every damn cobbled race they get me into. I live for that stuff. Life's simple as that.
How you rate your chances?
Bigger teams have failed to make an impact on that stone giant but I am here to give it another shot. I know the team depends on me. What may be of a winning move is the overall big firepower in the PCT. There are lots of stars, like Cancellara now. Summerhill will be the marked man. Maybe I can profit of that. Maybe I end up with no points. It'll make the PCT just the more interesting.
Why do you love the cobblez so much?
It's not just the thing I am good at, it's a special atmosphere of racing that's so intense. The positioning, the joy at a semi-classic on the sidelines, the hard knocks on your bike. Dirt, sweat, blood. I'm belgian, I grew up with it. It's all part here in a minimum held together. A mountain stage is far stretched out, many faces with lots of room. Here you all have the guys jumping on you, you don't just feel their breath. They are breathing you. That what makes it unique. That is why I chose to ride those classics in the first place.
What else do you plan, you can't just ride cobblez can you?
Of course not. I'd like to help out where I can. I am good on hills too, people like to forget that. Maybe I can make some breakaway stunts. We have strong sprinters, tell me to work for them I'll do it. Just don't get me near to the mountains, we have enough guys who like to do that stuff for fun.
How do you rate the strength of the team?
We are old guys who want to prove ourselves. So in some way, Strava's slogan Prove It is pretty fitting for us, too. I am here to prove something, too. It's a very motivating philosophy that's behind it. Sure the management likes to see too if I am doing my training rounds but we as a team also profit from it. We see how the other guys are doing in training. We can talk, chat about it. So I think the philosophy can work well with the team set-up. We have missed the boat on a really big scorer but I'm sure we'll make due.

Star signing Philippe Gilbert sat down with us, to explain his hopes for a second spring, the PCT competition and his goals of the season.
Philippe, you are one of the most known riders in the peloton. How is it to now come to a team in its second season?
Of course they know me well but many of the riders I've known before. There are also lots of riders from the BeNeLux states, so this helps to adapt. I think the team is set up nice and especially with Vanendert and Roux I have two strong companions. Maybe we can make some great things happen.
Is it strange to upload your data and track your training openly?
At first it was strange, yes. I forgot to upload the data several times so the team actually called me up on it. I am used to keeping it private just between me and my personal coach. Now it is public. But it's also motivational because you get lots of good feedback from your fans this way. It's a nice way to interact with them. I look forward to how it will work out with races. I hope they don't boo me.
Is age catching up with you?
Most certainly. I feel it in my bones, I don't have so many years on the top anymore. That's why I want to make the most of it now in the Pro Continental League. To get some wins, some good results. I feell like Strava did well in covering various grounds and providing a hydra for the hills. We may lack the strength of some riders such as Rui Costa or Froome, but I'm sure the team managenemt will find out good races for us to get opportunities to score.
What's your thoughts on Vanendert and Roux specifially?
Good riders, we can help each other a lot and take pressure off us. This way we can perform on occassion and maybe keep back and save energy, whilst another one goes for his chance. However of course my aim is to always be fit and ready to race.
Do you think Strava squads has a chance against the Summerhill leviathan?
It'll be extra hard. Apparently they have invested over 2 millions into training him alone. Instead of getting some worthwhile domestiques they have practically poured all the money into him. Now Strava and other teams will be left to do the chasing if they want to fight for the scraps. It's not an approach I can get behind, I prefer the strava method. They have taken responsibility in the past, I'm sure this can also be a strength one class higher.
Will you be of assistance to Baugnies in some races?
I havn't gone into this much detail with the staff so far but it's a possibility. I still have some hunger for the pavé and feel comfortable on it. Maybe there's a race for me.
Strava has recently launched a new ad-campaign called "Strive / Strava". To strive for your best. Is this a motto you can get behind?
Of course. Throughout my glorious career I have strived to be the best I can, to push myself. This is words I basically live by everyday when I don't get drunk and break my finger that is. Love the media approach of the staff, we really have an awesome team manager *wink wink*
Are you disappointed that Strava has not applied for any Wildcards?
At first I was, yes. But I can understand the reasoning behind it. Strava probably lacks the top level to compete for big results there, our depth matters little then when PT teams can stomp us like a fly. So whilst I'm sad, it's okay for me. It allows me to focus on the issues at hand: To keep Strava in the PCT and get some mojo going.
What is the race you look forward to most?
I can't give too much away but I look forward to a busy opening schedule and I like to try out Strade Bianche. It's a beautiful race, yet very tough and demanding. Maybe I can use the specific gravel roads to my advantage tho. Generally I like really most the races and I like it to mix it up with different experiences. I think, the HQ and I will come up with a nice, versatile race plan for me.

Strava has started its second season and boy, we are in for a rough one. Our debut month in January saw us participating in Australia's events, the Tour Down Under and the Down Under Classic.
Won by DeLaval's Lo Cicero, the australian pancake flat race Tosh Van der Sande. We havn't put anyone in the breakaway, so it was all eyes on the sprint. Van der Sande did not position him ideally in the fast sprint trains of the top favourites, but he still scored a 6th place. A very decent opening result for us.

Next up was Tour Down Under, a stage race over 6 days. We have brought a nice selection that relied on sprints and hill quality. Unfortunately, Modolo showed some confusing performances. He didn't bother in some sprints but went for hilly stage results. He still got our best stage result at 7th. We wonder what would have been possible on two stages that would have suited him ideally if he had just bothered more. Unfortunate.
Gilbert and Vanendert had a tough time hanging on with the best - which came as no surprise really, especially PhilBear still lacked a bit the rhythm. Vanendert got unlucky with some splits and lost time on one stage occassion that wasn't necessary. Thus he also lost some GC places, overall finishing inside Top 20. Modolo concluced the Top 20, showing his versatile nature, but also showing his erratic behavior at times. If only!

Not as much racing gone for Strava as other teams. Tour of Eritrea and Strade Bianche as HC choices were to be taken on, and GP Kigali saw a return of our cobblez dynasty to the pavé outside of Belgium, with our new leader coming to the light for the first time.
Things started off in February with the Berner Rundfahrt tho. Tosh Van der Sande was our weapon of choice again, and although Modolo would have liked the hill probably more, our belgian sprinter put in a solid ride. Unfortunately, solid doesn't cut it on this level.
With little support in the last group, Van der Sande got a 13rd place and at least scored some points.

Things started off with a bang. Modolo took the stage win on the first day! A strong team performance by Potts led him to the finish line and he finished it off in superb manner.

We were optimistic for the next stages, however Modolo was seemingly satisfied after his stage win and may have spent a bit too much partying: he had no legs to contest the sprint on the next day and lost the jersey without putting up a fight.
Later on, Modolo came to occassion again when he stayed strong in the favourite group, but couldn't get another stage win. The hills must have powered him out too much on day four.
Strava isn't a team of climbing tho. Laurent Didier put in some break attacks for the show but little was gained and the luxembourgian even crashed out later. Jelle Vanendert did way better tho. The hill specialist survived the tough climbs and put in a spectacular performance into the last day where he finished second, only beaten by the Cobra himself. He advanced in the GC to take 16th overall.

Next up was the first cobbled classic of the season for us. Strava has done well in the transfer period to gain quality and quantity, however it was clear that all rested on Jerome Baugnies. And he had an seemingly impossible task ahead of him: Beat the Summerhill Leviathan.
Strava opted for a very aggressive approach. We split the race apart after Baugnies' move with Tulik failed. Van Wyk and Langeveld were upfront with Baugnies and we had numerical superiorty mid-race.

Bad luck caught us though after Summerhill already have had a puncture, it was Baugnies turn. He got hit too and he didn't manage get back, despite the brave and great support of Langeveld. Baugnies came third in total and thanks to Langeveld's and Tulik's performance, Strava outscored the other teams anyway.
After the great team performance, Strava is clearly ambitious and looking forward to the next paved classics.

Strade Bianche
But how about the hilly classics? Well, the hill squad certainly was inspired by the recent success. With Langeveld as road captain, Strava took charge of the peloton throughout the race at Strade Bianche. We just love this race so it's great to see the guys motivated to such a great level that they put fears aside and just ride. We certainly enjoy the white roads of Tuscany as much as the pavé of northern europe.
As it comes, Strava race tactics almost worked out perfectly. Although Luis Leon Sanchez escaped from our grasp to take a convincing classic victory, Philippe Gilbert finally found his legs to take a strong 4th place. He was beaten by Froome in the sprint, who apparently was happy saving his energy for the sprint agains the belgian, instead of racing for victory. But we don't mind when Phil is racing like that.

With March in full process, it might be wiser for us to do race-to-race coverage until things settle down again.
After GP Kigali, Strava has made already some brand out of its cobbled strength. Recognized for our team support, we had several options in Denmark. The flat race with numerous sections of pavé saw again Danny Summerhill as the overwhelming favourite.
Strong performances by Langeveld and Baugnies put the American under a short leash though. All the more suprising, Langeveld still had the strength after all his work to finish the race in the sprint 3rd, only being beaten by Podium Ambition's Thomas and Who-Else Summerhill.#

Tosh Van der Sande was our main man in this flat race in Ireland. With hopes for a stage win, he faced some tough competition. Finishing twice on the podium (2nd & 3rd) meant that he would get us some good points but the stage win was out of reach this time around.
Van der Sande finished 8th in the GC and 9th in the Points ranking.

Strava is making itself a name on the PCT cobblez with great team tactics and lots of panache. At the famous Gent-Wevelgem, things didn't change as Strava pushed the limits of its rivals, but was once again denied the win on the line.
It has become a familiar sight as of now how Strava pushes its rider on the front and intends to make a break with at least 2, 3 riders in it. Things had to happen even twice in this race, first with Gilbert, Dupont and Baugnies a belgian trio tried to get away. But we were reeled in with Lierse.
The same thing almost happened with the trio including Langeveld a few kilometers laters, except this time Lierse joined up with Vanbilsen and Summerhill later on the flat. Langeveld pushed it to the max to keep the other chasing riders away, and Baugnies ultimately may have done too much work in the breakaway, as he got outsprinted by Vanbilsen to come second. Still a fine day of racing where Strava just came short but showed once again its strong team approach in taking initiative and racing for the win, rather than be content with scraps.

Don't worry, you're scoring very consistently and that big cobbles win will comes soon. This race really reminded me about something I wrote after the transfer period:

Bayern-Rundfahrt was good turf for scoring points but Strava was again eluded a second win. In this way, we are very much the opposite of Novatek it seems who came out of this race with two stage wins.
Tosh Van der Sande made headlines with a third and second place on the podium on two stages. The real highlight was the dynamic duo of Gilbert and Vanendert though, who overcame a weak (but expected) TT showing, on the fourth day.
Taking the scraps, Strava at 4-5 on stage 4
 Luis Leon Sanchez of Netia proved once again to strong to beat for Strava as Kadri took a very surprising stage win, but Vanendert and Gilbert lead the chasers over the line and came 5th and 6th overall in the GC.
With two riders upfront, we were in prime position to win the team classification but Ferrero-Samruk send one of their riders into the break and since the peloton had a lazy day, we lost the team competition on the last day. Dread!
