Personally don't think Grmay should be in the squad, as Ethiopia has never been a colony. Can't think of a proper replacement though
Not sure about the selection process of this, but in my opinion the events of the Abyssinia crisis (and previous wars) would warrant a place for Ethiopia. They held off the might of Italy back when they were a world power.
When Ethiopia was annexed into Italian East Africa they liberated themselves through a great deal of courage and fighting. The peaceful work done by Haile Selassie was incredible, and yet it was still ignored.
During WW2 Ethiopian soldiers (see Gideon Force) played a pivotal role in liberating all of East Africa. They were mainly under British control, but it was an Ethiopian Army, led by Haile Selassie which liberated Addis Ababa.
Sorry for spamming your thread, but I just think this is a story more people should know about. |

Looks like an utterly nutterly but buttery event here Atlantius - since becoming involved in EPIC I've been really impressed with some of the brilliant work here. This is one innovative event and also quite an interesting one - obviously Euskatel will be one of the more dominent teams but why not.
Thrilled to see a decent Caja presence - hell I can even sorta justify the crappy Brammier move!

The Hobbit: At this moment it's probably the best place on all Daily to post that story. Grmay is back in
Smows: Well a race series centered around Basque country shold have Euskaltel as a major force. Just realised that the Brammeier move actually makes you eligible for an own team, so you can have that if you wish. Then what remains of Euskadi and Navarra United teams will just merge into one.

Nice to see erm... One IAM rider in there!
IAM not amused.

Hello fans,
It's been a while since we talked, but I'm back for the start of the 2014 season. My winter was pretty good, I decided to do a few cyclocrosses. I have learned two things that way, the first thing was how to stay on my bike. It caused me some problems last season, so I hope it won't happen so much this year. The second thing was how to win a race. I got quite close a few times last year, so this year should be the year for me.
For those of you who didn't follow the cyclocross season, and I'm sure there's quite a few amongst our Basque fan base, my first win was after an uphill attack, holding on to my lead in a tricky descend all the way to the finish line. The second was where I won the sprint in a small group. So I did learn a few things over the winter. I also feel my cobble ability has gone up and that I take the hills even slightly better now. So yeah, 2013 was a learning year for me, but I feel I am ready for my first win this year.
Looking at the transfers, I feel like a stranger in a strange land. The manager has done some great transfer to restore the Basque identity of the team, but I feel more of a foreigner then last year. Not complaining though, for our manager has miraculously found a few Basques who actually don't hate cobbles!
So, with better support I hope to do really well in the classics this year. I haven't heard my entire season planning yet, but I'm likely to start with the preparation races in Gabon and the Tour Down Under. I didn't ride Gabon last year, but I do remember J.J. Lobato getting our first win of the season there. Unfortunately he is no longer on the team, so all the sprinting pressure will land on my shoulders. I did ride Tour Down Under last year, and managed to get my first points with getting top 10 on a stage. I have slightly higher expectations this year though, Willunga Hill should suit me, so a top 10 GC might be possible.
I'll be leaving for Gabon tomorrow, not sure if I have internet there, so until the next blog!
~ Rudy

Hey fans,
Found some internet in the hotel, so here goes. In stage 1, we had Garikoitz Bravo in the break, so it was an easy day to start the season. I managed to sprint to a second place in the peloton, unfortunately the break was still there, so it was only 7th. Still, a top 10 to start the season is really nice.
Stage two was a lot tougher, Movistar set an insane pace for Calzone. I managed to hold on, but my best powers were wasted. Only 13th in a chaotic sprint. But that's ok, I'm still in the running for a good GC and I have a few punchier stages coming up. Beating guys like Henao will be tough of course, but I can only try!

Race 1: Clásica San Sebastián
As last year the first test for the peloton will be the route of the biggest Basque classic.
Last year the race was won by Antón, but this year the competition is much tougher and Igor can't even feel confident that he is the leader of his team.
Full list of starters:
Boivin is the first rider to attack in this years EHST.
In the end he is accompagnies by Berhane, Gazvoda, Vaitkus, Robert, Mezgec, Othman and Konovalovas
With 200 km to go they have a gap of 4'22.
Quite a few teams have decided to help control things on the wet roads today.
175 km and 6'51
150 km and 8'41
125 km and 8'01
100 km and 5'59
It's Jaizbabel time.
The Euskaltels are working hard in the peloton assisted by QuickStep and Vlaanderen.
Robert leads the break over the summit of Jaizkabel with the peloton 5'20 behind and 90 km to the finish line
80 km and 5'08
70 km and 4'18
60 km and 3'33
The second crossing of Jaizkabel has a very visible effect on the size of the peloton. Riders like Shaqif, Palmarsson and Abundi are among the first to drop.
Still 50 km to go so anything can happen really.
40 km and 1'40 between the break and the main group.
33 km to go for Ion Izagirre when he decides that it's time for the favourites to start moving.
Martin, Verboven, Antón, Kwiatkowski and Rodríguez follows shortly after while Asia has to make do with pulling the peloton to bring po-Ding and Kakhi back in contention.
With 24 km to go the break is caught. To everyones surprise none of them even tried to resist.
Again Izagirre tries to go solo over Alto de Arkale.
With 20 km to go:
Izagirre is not giving in to the chasers.
Roche and Kim are not satisfied being caught so far behind and chases hard with Kwiatkowski lurking behind.
Purito makes a move to catch Ion with 13 km to go but everyone looks on the limit of cracking.
Meanwhile Kwiatkowski is done lurking and suddenly appears next to the front duo. The other riders in his groups will not be happy to see how much energy he saved while they worked so hard.
10 km left:
Right after Kwiatek is on the move once again.
His fresh legs reward him as he has close to a half-minute gap with 5 km to go.
Things get somewhat reunited behind with just over 1 km to go and Purito completely empty.
No cheering from Kwiatkowski as he crosses the line first. Perhaps he realizes that the rest of the favourites won't be too happy about how he rode the race.
Izagirre finishes off a good day by winning the sprint behind ahead of Verboven.
The rest of the riders come dropping in small groups.
The Sagastín award goes to Ion Izagirre. None of the early attackers made even one single attack later on while Ion was the main reason that things were torn into so small groups due to his attacks from far out.

A few notes about the points system.
For the individual rankings it's the same as last year meaning that the top 20 get points and the winner of the Sagastín award given to the most attacking rider of the day gets an additional 5 points.
This season I'm also introducing a team ranking where the team gets points according to their team finish time in the results. I think it's the best 3 riders that count. Each stage the teams get points according to the individual stage rankings points meaning that the two rankings are completely seperate.

Pretty satisfied with Po-Dings 4th place. Our guy is not only good in climbing and time-trialing, but he can also do the hills among the best

Always like it when these races come along. Kwiatek was the obvious favourite, and Ion beats his normal team mate Rudy on the line. Po-ding a bit surprising, I had no idea he could do classics. Fun race!

Nice to see Ireland doing well, allthough I'd like to know why Roche is riding for Astana, not Ireland? Surely we could use him more?

There's only 2 BMC riders in the entire race and they both scored points.
We're a new team.

Fascinating start to the 'EHST'.
Not much here from Caja Rural - but great to be hear hope they get out in the breakaways a bit more often.

Thanks for the nice responses. Happy that you like it.
Last year had some great AI so I'm very relieved to see something similar with this peloton in spite of the big changes.
Dippofix: He riders for Astana because Astana had enoug eligible riders to qualify for an own team and they prefered to have him in Astana-colours.
Now to start thinking about where to place the next edition. It will be somewhere in one of the other regions, though not Scotland as they had a race last season and not Vlaanderen as they will host a cobbled race later on. I'm open to suggestions for cool routes I may have missed. Preferrably via PM as I don't want to clot this one up with it.

Well the days of Gorka Nieve scoring some surprising points in EHST seem to be over.

OPQS's first win of the season. Even though it's not a CQ rated race. Nice win Kwiatek!

Hey fans,
Gabon has ended, and I'm happy with my race. The legs felt really good, so I tihnk this could be a good season. I feel more competent going up the hills, Henao and co didn't get very far. In the sprints, I was doing a great job as well. Sure, sprinting for victory was never happening with all the breakaways, but it was good. In the end, I got 4 top 10 results and a 6th place in the GC, not too bad. That's quite a lot of points for the team, and it might be needed this year.
We also ended the race great, a big congratulations to Pello Bilbao for winning the final stage. I was sprinting, but when I saw him crossing the line, I started celebrating as well. Really happy for him!
On that note, I owe an apology to my countryman Jurgen Roelandts. Sorry Jurgen, I just didn't see you, sorry for that block.
Now, on the plane to Australia for the next race, the World Tour opener Santos Tour Down Under. It's a course that should be good for me, so if the jetlag isn't too bad, I'll try to get some more top 10's there.
