Cycling interest in Veneto explodes

The cycling interest in the Italian region Veneto, has exploded. The creation of the Diadora team, and their big investment in cycling growth.

Diadora, with it's base in Veneto, has started to host cycling courses, competitive bike rentals and many local races. Diadora seems to have done something the other teams of Italy haven't managed.

Some words before Vuelta Ciclista a Mallorca

4 stages in the vacation paradise Mallorca. With 2 flat, 1 hilly and 1 mountain stage this is a well rounded race. Though not the best sprinters are here, there are some real mountain goats. Like Valverde, Contador, Mollema.

oi59.tinypic.com/34oejrb.jpg

We have a divided squad, with both Cunego and Glos as captains. We think Glos have a good chance in the sprints, but it might be too hard for Cunego in the mountains.

Something before Tour of Qatar

Tour of Qatar this year consists of 6 stages this year, 5 flat sprint stages and one time trial. Kittel is the big favorite in this year, but riders like Kristoff, Roelants and Nizzolo might be able to challenge him.

oi60.tinypic.com/25s7k06.jpg
In this race our sponsor requires a top ten overall, and to get it we have sent De Filippi. I think we might even be able to get a top five, but all depends on the Team Time Trial. We have Borghini with a question mark here, because of his Achilles. But he is fit to race

Vuelta ciclista a Mallorca | Stage 1

oi61.tinypic.com/2lwkiti.jpg

Today it's a very short and flat stage with circuits in Palma. We don't know what to expect from today, else than a mass sprint. But there can also be crashes in these sharp turns.

We saw attacks from the start today. But as you can see on the picture, the peleton, lead by Banco BIC, relaid hard to not let a big break away. Kolobnev won the first sprint.

oi62.tinypic.com/25511g4.jpg

It took us 50 km to get a 7-man break.
T. Dekker(GRS)
B. Jungles (TFR)
D. Gruzdev (AST)
E. Garcia (COF)
G. Cesar V (OFM)
P. Bilbao (CJR)
P. Torres (BUR)
They had 2 min at the most

oi62.tinypic.com/1904tw.jpg

Bak won the 2nd sprint, after the break had been reeled in 2,5 km ago. LTB continued the pace after the sprint as well, but since Glos had sprinted for a second place in the sprint, he was well placed.

oi62.tinypic.com/1904tw.jpg

15 km to go and Contador met the tarmac! The pre favorite Contador had taken Majla and Westra with him. The worst possible place to fall.

oi60.tinypic.com/2drrmh4.jpg
5 km to go, and Contador still haven't caught up, but Majka have. Our lead out train is still at the front. But in the tiny downhill there's a new crash! 4 riders, including Spartacus are down.

oi60.tinypic.com/nl1ug4.jpg
Flame rouge. Van Avermaet is leading, in front of Glos and Sieberg. Glos have just left Maaskant's wheel, and has a small speed lack compared to the others.

oi62.tinypic.com/6jqbv9.jpg
And Van Avermaet keeps it in! Glos only got the 4th place. 4 min after the peleton, comes a beaten Contador.

Tour of Qatar | Stage 1

oi62.tinypic.com/qqeums.jpg

135 km pure flat. We will probably see Katusha and Giant riding for the stage today, as they have the best sprinters. Weather forecast today is sunny and a little win from the south. So there will be no side wind today.

De Filippi has been given no chance for victory today, but we think we can disprove that with maybe a podium spot. Because we have brought Ahlgren here, and he's a top leadout man.

oi60.tinypic.com/2dub5hd.jpg
After 35 km, we finally had our BOTD.
A. Schillinger (TNE)
D. Teklehaimanot (MTN)
Goesinnen (DPC) also caught up with them.

oi58.tinypic.com/e8qph1.jpg
Teklehaimanot and Schillinger won each their sprint. And as we went under the 2nd sprint, we noticed that Ahlgren had great legs compared to De Filippi. We would go for him in the sprint instead. This might have be a bad decision for the GC, but who knows?

oi61.tinypic.com/msyyag.jpg
Just under 5 km to go and the three trains are set. Most of the sprinters prefers Katusha's train.

oi62.tinypic.com/5y8cjs.jpg
Flame Rouge. Porsev and Janse Van R. is the leading leadoutmen. But this will be a real thriller between Kristoff and Kittel!

oi62.tinypic.com/117u351.jpg
And how close is that? Who will be the winner? Kristoff had the lead, but Kittel came fast...

And Kristoff won it! Ahlgren gets a disappointing 5th, after having so good legs today.

Vuelta ciclista a Mallorca | Stage 2

oi58.tinypic.com/29vmkjq.jpg

Last chance for the sprinters in Mallorca today. 3 climbs in the 3,2km long "mountain" Col de Santanyi. We will try to get a rider in the BOTD, so he can take some points in the KoM.

oi59.tinypic.com/2ur9own.jpg
It wasn't even time to form a break before the first climb. Valencia gave it a try, and took the mountain points.

oi57.tinypic.com/14e87x0.jpg
The break was made as the race reached the first sprint.
A. Kolobnev (KAT)
A. Valenica (DIA)
G. Cesar V. (OFM)
Kolobnev won the first sprint.

oi60.tinypic.com/o6ilbc.jpg
Valencia outsprinted Kolobnev on the 2nd climb, while Cesar Veloso won the sprint. In the space between the sprint and the last climb, L.L. Sanchez(CJR) had joined the BOTD

oi60.tinypic.com/2rysn4g.jpg
Over the last climb, Valencia outsprinted Kolobnev again, but instead of waiting for the others. He tried to go solo, but with 20km to go the BOTD caught up with him. The BOTD was caught with 10 km to go.

oi60.tinypic.com/23u76mh.jpg
4km to go. 2 sprint trains are set up today, Diadora and Lotto. Behind we see a group with a little under 100 riders, including Gilbert, Cancellara and Contador.

oi60.tinypic.com/2q3ykhk.jpg
And it's a fact.. We have a terrible sprint train. Glos ends up far behind, even beaten by Valverde.

Wildcard for MSR

Today we got our first Wild Card for a monuemnt, and it's for Milano San Remo. The 293 km long race might be a little long for some of our riders, but we hope to bring a good result!!

Also we have gotten a prototype frame from De Rosa. We are still to test it, but as we hit some mountain stages, we might use our sprinters to test the equipment in races. We are already sending a few to Mallorca.

Tour of Qatar | Stage 3

oi59.tinypic.com/282199j.jpg
Another flat and short stage in Qatar. We expect a similar race to the first stage, but we'll try to do a little better sprint, and make our sprint train start later. We have also sent 4 frames of De Rosa down here. Our non-sprinting team will test them in the race today. Luckily, or unluckily there is no wind on today's weather forecast.

oi57.tinypic.com/8xr9eu.jpg
There were a lot of unsuccessful break attempts today, but after we had rode 50 km, we finally had one.
J. Barta (TNE)
B. Johnson (DPC)
S. Kuroeda (VFN)
T. Kalojiros (BAU)
B. Potgieter (MTN)
Barta won the first sprint, while Kuroeda won the second. The peleton was really close when they sprinted for the last one, it would be a mass sprint today too.

oi59.tinypic.com/154ya6a.jpg
With 3km to go Ahlgren had been blocked by Orica, and was forced to move to the middle. He was now blocked as he tried to lead out De Filippi.

oi61.tinypic.com/2ptqyp0.jpg
Flame Rouge. The leadout men Howard and Van Poppel is leading, in front of Krupois and Nizzolo. Kittel, Kristoff and De Filippi have been blocked and are badly placed.

oi57.tinypic.com/xd0ex.jpg
And Nizzolo takes the win. We see De Filippi going straight towards the Orica riders, and he really complains about the situation just before the sprint was launched.. I think we need to look at some replays here...

oi60.tinypic.com/e13rtg.jpg
3 Orica riders are advancing on the right side of the road. Blocked from the leadout
oi61.tinypic.com/2qn837n.jpg
Here is the action, the Orica rider (Clarke) decides to go straight through the Diadora train, cutting off Ahlgren and De Filippi from the rest

Vuelta ciclista a Mallorca | Stage 3

oi62.tinypic.com/wb3zmw.jpg

The third stage in Mallorca is the toughest of them all. We have gotten no chance for winning by the betters, so we'll try to attack earlier. As the race isn't finished on a mountaintop, we'll expect a small group to finish in the front. But maybe we will see a Pellizotti copy. Along with Cunego's GC chances, we'll also be riding for Valencia's KoM.

oi59.tinypic.com/34o6hx0.jpg
Valencia attacked right from the start today and rode alone to the first KoM, while getting caught by two riders, but still winning the sprint for the second. He had opened a gap for 8 minutes!

oi59.tinypic.com/160vipu.jpg
The BOTD was formed by
E. Garcia (COF)
E. Prades (OFM)
M. Wyss (IAM)
A. Valencia (DIA)
F. Wegmann (GRS)
A. Delaplace (BSE)

But after the two first MO-sprints BMC decided to relay, and the pace was so high that many riders had to fall.

As expected there were many falls today. Uran, as an outsider to win this race fell with 95km to go.

oi60.tinypic.com/2j3grwm.jpg
Delaplace won the sprint and Valencia won another KoM. But behind the peleton was close. 2'51'' was the gap. Delaplace got dropped from the BOTD up that climb, and didn't catch up, but more important was that Uran was dropped.

oi60.tinypic.com/nohdtu.jpg
Up the 2nd category climb, Valencia tried to go solo in the front. The peleton is completely broken, after high pace all day. 38 men left. Cunego still got 1 helper there, and he also got Valencia in the front.
At the bottom of the last climb

Valencia (+24) Prades-Wyss-Wegmann (+1'24''Wink Garcia (+53''Wink Peleton

oi62.tinypic.com/1zdtd0h.jpg

10km to go on the climb, and Cunego is already struggeling to keep up with the best favourites, but on the bright side, Valencia has 2'20 to Gr. Qunitana.

oi58.tinypic.com/2cgy3he.jpg
5km to the summit, and Cunego is all alone. He is chasing the Gr. Quintana/Valverde and in front Frank. Valencia has also lost a minute to them, he'll soon get caught

oi62.tinypic.com/2mxkdcg.jpg
1,5 km to the top. Padres has caught Valencia, while Bardet, Quintana, Betancur and Spilak has made a gap down to Martin&co. Including Cunego.

oi60.tinypic.com/9qvbeq.jpg
On the top Quintana is going solo! He is being followed by Bardet. Behind him Cunego has caught up with Spilak and Betancur. Prades is still between them.

oi57.tinypic.com/2d80y77.jpg
Quintana now got 53'' to Bardet, who has 22'' to Cunego. Can we get Cunego, who has caught Padres in 2nd maybe??

oi62.tinypic.com/23lnz4p.jpg
Quintana with 3 km to go. His competitors is nowhere to be seen. But they are 1 km after, and Cunego has caught Bardet!

oi62.tinypic.com/63zupv.jpg
And Quintana is superior today. He is already in the finish area. Cunego has been counted 1'30'' behind him.

Bardet outsprints Cunego for 2nd place. And behind them comes the two biggest surprises of today. First come Prades, then 22'' after comes Valencia. Betancur finishes as the first from the favorite group, 3min behind Quintana.

7 min after comes Gr Maillot Jaune. Van Avermaet was beaten today, by his own teams killing pace.
