I knew I'd suffer today as I have had to make a large effort in the past few days to get the KoM Jersey, and I think that I've always preferred to ride with other riders, as I can make a bigger effort, so yeah I'm happy with my day.
Adam

Stage 17 - Mountainous Road Race

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/Giro/ScreenShot2014-07-19at111225_zps2ee5158b.png

Today was my first proper rest day in a a few weeks, as the break had none of my rivals in so they could pick up all the KoM points, so I could just relax in the bunch withe my teammates.
Adam

Stage 18 - Hilly Road Race

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/Giro/ScreenShot2014-07-19at111235_zps802aa2a9.png

Today was a hard, hard day because it was so hot, I mean I'm struggling to talk now as I need to get a drink so much.
Simon

Stage 19 - Mountain Top Finish

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/Giro/ScreenShot2014-07-19at111305_zps117d159c.png

One of my final efforts before the end, but it didn't really pay off as I got dropped on the first climb from the real, so then it was just about survival.
Adam

Stage 20 - Mountain Top Finish

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/Giro/ScreenShot2014-07-19at111322_zpsc5f2575f.png

I've done it, I can't believe that I've won the KoM Jersey in my first year as a pro, and in my first Grand Tour. It truly is a dream come true.
Adam

Stage 21 - Time Trial

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/Giro/ScreenShot2014-07-19at111350_zps44ad27bb.png

I've never been great against the clock, so today was just about surviving and enjoying the day, riding in the KoM jersey, which I have won. I can't believe it, my first Grand Tour and I win a jersey, it's just like a dream come true for me. I know I told everyone i was expecting a stage win, but really I just wanted to finish so to win this is just amazing.
Adam

Yeah I'm happy with my Giro as I was in the break a lot, and I was the first wearer of the KoM Jersey in the 2014 Giro, thats something I will treasure forever, and for my brother to win the KoM Jersey outright is just amazing. I'm just so happy with how this has gone, and all the suffering has been worthwhile.

Due to the hard nature of this year's Giro Adam and Simon Yates have decided along with the management to pull out of the Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour of Austria, to allow themselves to recover before the Vuelta and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, where Adam will go in as absolute team leader for the first time this season.

I'm satisfied with how I did today as I didn't lose to much time to the main contenders for this week, although I would of preferred to be in the top 10 as I would of been better placed to take the leaders Jersey tomorrow.

Today was a great day for me as I took the win, after attacking coming up the final climb. It's just a bonus that it means I take the Leaders Jersey, I'm just so happy, and the team all worked brilliantly today to set me up for the win. Yeah it's a good feeling!
Adam

Today was another hard day, with two big climbs, but I'm not complaining they both suited me really well, it's just a shame the finish wasn't on top of a climb, because that would of suited me more, but Eddy won, so today was successful.
Adam

Stage 4 - Time Trial

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/ScreenShot2014-07-19at194728_zpsa701ca6b.png

I think today might be one of the best Time Trails I have ever ridden, because I'll admit that today I was just expecting to limit my losses to the big time trailers, but to get 3rd. Yeah I'll take that.
Adam

Stage 5 - Flat Road Race

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/ScreenShot2014-07-19at194636_zps07dd4b08.png

Today was pretty sweet! To get the win on a flat stage, which doesn't suit me always feels good. I thought the bunch had slowed down a lot after Simon and Jan were caught so I put in a dig, and didn't see the bunch until the finish.
Adam

Stage 6 - Hilly Road Race

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/USA%20Pro%20Cycling%20Challenge/ScreenShot2014-07-19at200501_zps7c3d036f.png

Another win for the team, I think that just shows how strong we are at the minute, and I know it's just been me and Eddy winning, but you have to have a great team behind you to win, and it's those guys that deserve the credit because we only have to ride in the last few kilometres of a race, where as they have to ride hard from the start.
Adam

NEWS

The Yates Brothers would like to announce that they have signed a one year contract with Cannondale to ride for them in the 2014 season. They would like to thank the other teams for making others, but said that they feel that Cannondale is the right team for them.

I think that Cannondale is going to be a very strong team for next year, I mean I have been offered an opportunity to be team leader in a Grand Tour, but I am not going to say which one, however I also feel that with the quality of riders that are at the squad, that it will help me to develop both tactically and physically. I also wish to help the team leader at the Tour De France, which I think it is no secret that it will be Chris Froome. However I'd also like to thank the management of Netapp, as they have helped me to this point, and have been key to my development as a bike rider this year, I'd also like to thanks them for the opportunities to lead the team, and to gain experience in big race such as the Giro and Vuelta.
Adam Yates

For me I think that the decision to join Cannondale was pretty simple, due to the fact that they have offered me the chance to lead the team at some races, to help me to grow into a potential ardennes classic winner in the future. However I also think that riding with experienced riders like Chris Froome and Richie Porte will also help me to understand what I need to do to win races in the future, and how I should train to be at the best of my abilities
Simon Yates

I have watched the Yates from within the peloton, this year, and I can see that they have a lot of potential, however now I will be able to advise them on how to ride races to win. I am very much looking forward to working with the team, as I think it has developed into an incredibly strong team, that I think will dominate cycling.
Ivan Basso, Ex Rider and Cannondale DS

I'm pretty satisfied with how I rode today as I think in the long run, I am in a good place to challenge for the overall, although G did a great ride so maybe he will get his chance in the lead.
Adam

Yeah today was good as I managed a decent placing, and I think that if I can get in a break when we hit the hills, i might have the chance to take the jersey, as the GC contenders won't be expecting me to feature in the race.
Simon

I'm happy with my performance as I don't have the sprint of some of the other riders, such as Simon, who are able to fight it out with the sprinters, but at least I've moved up GC so I'm within striking distance of the lead.
Adam

Stage 3 - Flat Road Race

I can't believe what the team achieved today, I mean to beat sprinters like Cav and Greipel is a great honour, and I think it is something I will always remember. It's not often a team gets a 1-2 on a stage, so we are going to enjoy this.
Simon

I'm so happy with my ride today, as I wasn't expecting to feature in the sprints, but I got a great lead out from G and only Cav came past me, and G managed to hold on for 3rd ahead of Greipel and Viviani. Jan took over the leaders jersey, which is brilliant as he has worked so hard for us all year, and now he gets a bit of glory for himself
Simon

Stage 5 - Team Time Trial

i1369.photobucket.com/albums/ag202/TheYatesBrothers2/Vuelta/ScreenShot2014-07-20at084847_zps26689321.png

The team put in a great ride, to defend Jan's lead, with Jan doing a lot of the work, but I thin k it shows how tight knit our team is as we have been practising at TTT's for a long time now as we know that we need to improve, and it seems that we have.
Adam

Stage 6 - Hilly Road Race

I'm Shellshocked! I just can't believe that I have won today, as I knew that I might suffer today, so I tried to get in the break to help Adam and Mikel later in the race, but with abut 20km to go, Malcolm (Elliot, Netapp DS) told me I still had a 10 minute lead over the pack, so I did the maths and I knew that if I could stay at the front I would take the leaders jersey, so when I realised I could win the stage I went for it, and I did it.
Simon

Sure I'm disappointed to lose 4 minutes to the main contenders, but it's not all doom and gloom, as Simon is in the Lead by 4 minutes, so maybe he can try to maintain or increase that, so I'll try to help him keep it for as long as possible, and then I will try to help Mikel in the Mountains, and maybe go for a stage win or the KoM.

I'm a bit confused about what happened today, as I made s light effort going up the climb, and the bunch sat up behind me so my director told me to keep going, and my team mates stopped and waited for me, and they paced me up to the front group, so I have them to thank for my result today, but I'm delighted to extend my lead, to 6 and a half minutes on Contador.
Simon

Stage 8 - Flat Road Race.

I made a bit of a mistake as I went all out to win the two intermediate sprints, for the points and the time bonus, which put me 20 seconds further ahead of Contador and Albasini. I wasn't able to recover before the finish, so I told G to attack and he almost won the stage ahead of the main sprinters.

Yeah I'm disappointed about how I rode today, as I would of loved to keep the Lead, but I'm not a climber, and I just can't keep up with Contador and Purito because they are so much more natural, I mean there isn't any climbs like that today in Manchester. Although I rode well and didn't lose to much time and I still have the Points and the KoM to fight for, but I think my days in the top 10 are numbered.
Simon

Yeah today was much better as I managed to get in a break coming over the penultimate climb, and get a decent lead, but I was caught by Contador and Purito in the final few km, so that's a shame, but I'm back in contention now for a podium, and I mean we have 4 guys in the top 10 so this could get interesting.
Adam

I think I rode very well today as I was able to stay with the big names all the way to the top of the final climb, and I think that if my teammates hadn't eased the pace to allow me to get back on after I had a mechanical, then we might of stayed with them all of the way, as Mikel is super strong at the minute.
Adam

Yeah I must admit I'm a bit annoyed at myself, as I got boxed in before both intermediate sprints, and if I had got some points I would still be in the points jersey, but I'll try and get it back tomorrow.

NEWS.

After the first rest day of the Vuelta Simon Yates has been forced to pull out of the race after a violent stomach bug caught on the rest day has forced him to pull out, in the aim that he will be prepared to ride the Tour of Britain followed by the World Championships.

In further news Adam Yates has announced that he will pull out of the race, in preparation for the World Championships later in the year, he said "I think that I have already proven that I can be a GC contender in a grand tour, so I've decided to withdraw from the race as I know that if I complete the race, I may be to fatigued to compete in the Worlds, which are my biggest goal for the season. I'd like to thank my team for helping me to make this decision and I wish G and Mikel the best of luck for the rest of the race."

Today I'm absolutely delighted with the win, as it shows the form I am in at the moment, and although we messed the lead out up, we still got the win, which just shows how strong we all are at the minute, and I think it's a good sign for the rest of the race and for the Worlds.

The team rode superbly again today, with the guys chasing the break down before the final few climbs, and then me and Simon went in the break, but I told Simon to just sit on incase another rider came across to us, so we would still win the stage, so he did but when we came to the finish he didn't come past me, so that was a nice thing for him to do for me today.

Today was hard day as we lost the GC lead to Monfort, who is a much better time trail list than me and Simon, but maybe Simon would still be in the lead, if he took the win yesterday, it's just a shame, but we'll fight to get the Jersey back of him.

Today we knew what we had to do to get the lead back, and we managed it, so that's always good, especially as Simon won the stage meaning he took the lead by 1 second, but theres still a long way to go, and I'm sure that we'll fight for it from know on as we have a decent gap to second place.

I think today we made a bit of a miscalculation of the strength of Radioshack as we used a lot of our guys early on to shred the field, so we didn't have numbers when we needed them, I tried to attack to cut the field down, but Radioshack shut me down immediately and from then on I was on the back foot, Simon rode a strong race to keep the Jersey and was very strong today, but I think tomorrow i need to attack to jump Monfort for 2nd place.

Yeah Im very happy today, as the team rode perfectly today, we had two guys in the break, but they just sat on so they were fresh for later, and then Thwaitesy and House were like machines today, riding at such a high tempo on the final few climbs, that I thought I was going to get dropped. I'm delighted to get 2nd on GC back!

Today's stage was just like a recovery ride for us today, we didn't want to ride to hard as we have the Worlds next week, and we want to still be fresh for that. I think we could of won the stage if we tried to, as we have some great sprinters on the squad, and I think that there aren't any pure sprinters here, maybe tomorrow we'll try and get Andy the win.
Simon

Stage 8 - Flat Road Race.

Yeah today was a great stage, from the start we had Johnny Mac, Gibby and House on the front controlling the breaks, as today was a pretty short stage so we didn't want a break to go, although we sent Clancy up to the break so we could ease off as the attacks were constant. Yeah the sprint didn't go so well, but it didn't need to as we have dominated this week of racing, and our results show it. I'm just so happy for myself and the team, as this is the last race I will be doing for the team, so it's great to go out on a high note, with us winning all the classifications.

The plan for today was to get Froomey the win, we put Brad in a break to relieve us from chasing, but when we hit the climb Froome wanted to try to cut the field down, but we didn't have enough riders to do that, so when Wiggo was brought back I went up the road and tried to hold on for as long as possible, and on a different course I think it would suit me better. Froomey was in the final group but he couldn't outsprint the Spaniards who have a much stronger kick than him, but he still got 5th which is a good result.

Season Review

January - March

Races

British National Championships
Tour of San Luis
Tour of Oman
Tour of Langkawi

I was really surprised with how the season started, as when we were racing the nationals, I wasn't expecting to feature in the race, that's why I went into the break. I could never have imagined that I would do what I managed to do. I think that was my best win this season, as it means so much to wear that jersey all year. I'm pretty happy with my result in San Luis as it was my first stage race and I managed to get a top 5 on GC, that I wasn't expecting, I mean I was hoping to just be in the front group on some of the key stages of the race. Tour of Oman was another great result for me as I didn't lose to much time on the Summit Finish, and then I managed a decent result the day after. Lankawi was a little disappointing as I had, had such a great start to the year, I had come to expect good results, but maybe I just expected to much on a route that didn't really suit my style of riding.
Simon

The National Road race was a little disappointing as I was expecting a top 3 as the course really suited me, but I guess that it just wasn't to be. The Time Trial I was delighted about as I'm not a renowned Time Trialler, but I guess that the hilly route suited my skill set, so to get a podium made up for the not so great Road Race. San Luis was ok as I worked well for the team, throughout, and I managed to stay at the front on the key stages, so that was positive. Tour of Oman was brilliant, as I wasn't expecting to get two stage wins, let alone get 2nd overall and the King of the Mountains, I think that it showed the team that I have the potential to be a GC leader in the future. Langkawi was a decent result as I was ill coming into it, so it was touch and go as to whether I would ride or not, so to get 5th overall, I was pretty happy with.
Adam

April - June

Races

Criterium International
Giro d'Italia

The Criterium International, didn't really suit me as I prefer short and steeper hills as I can use my kick to push over them, where as on the long climbs, I seem to struggle to make those interval like forts on the climbs, yet on the flat I seem fine. The Giro was brilliant as I never expected to hold a jersey let alone for a week, which was a real bonus for me as I was just riding the race for the experience.
Simon

To get a top 5 in the Criterium International, was a great feeling as I never expected to be up there with riders like Contador and Mollema, so I think that motivated me and gave me confidence before the Giro. Although I was a little disappointed not to be up there on GC, I am delighted to have won the KoM jersey, as it shows my strength on the climbs, and the fact that I'm not afraid to make a break to win.
Adam

July - September

Races

USA Pro Cycling Challenge
Vuelta a España
Tour of Britain
World Championships

The Pro Cycling Challenge was a decent race for me, especially as the route was a bit tough for me, although maybe it was showing the sort of form, I was in before the Vuelta. I think the Vuelta was a great race for me, as I got a stage win and with it the Leaders Jersey, which I could never have imagined would happen so I'm very happy with that, but also because I wore all of the jerseys in the race, due to that breakaway, so that was great, it was just a shame I had to pull out, but I wasn't in a state that I could ride the bike for 200km a day. The Tour of Britain was another good race for me, with it giving me my first overall victory in a race, but also to win in front of my home crowd was a great honour, and something that I will never forget.
Simon.

I'm pretty happy with how I rode at the Pro Cycling Challenge, as I was the team leader, so I think that it was good that I was able to show that I can lead a team in a race. The Vuelta didn't go as well as I was expecting, as I thought I could be in contention for a podium, but I suppose that did me a favour as I pulled out to prepare for the Worlds, and I think I rode better at the Worlds, than if I had struggled through a three week race. The Tour of Britain was a great experience as we don't often get to race so close to home, so winning the first two stages and taking second overall was a great result in front of a home crowd. The Worlds weren't about getting a result, I just rode them for the experience and to help Chris in the hills, which I managed to do, so that was job done, so I'm happy with that

New Team

When our agent told us that Cannondale wanted to sign us, we thought that he was joking. We didn't believe that what we see as one of the best teams in the world wanted to sign us, so we were honoured to get the opportunity. I think it helped the fact that we both had such a good Giro, in front of the Italians, and at such a young age I think that they got behind us and we have a decent fan base in Italy. The Vuelta was another good race for us, which showed them that we could contend in the big races, and I think it was an easy decision for both of us to join Cannondale, as it is our opportunity to race in some of the best races in the world, with one of the best teams in the world. I'm happy that they've signed Mikel as well as we built up a strong friendship this year, so it's good to have someone you know at the team, except Adam of course.

Season Expectations.

Well I think that this season is more about trying to be consistent in the bigger races, like the Grand Tours, and along with Ivan Basso. We have discussed at length my calendar for this season, and which races I would like to focus on, so obviously one of my targets is the British Nationals, as the course really suits me with another summit finish at the top of Whinlatter Pass in the Lake District, so I want to be in good shape for that. Another goal we have decided is the Giro which I will be joint team leader with Mikel, and I will hope to get a top 10 GC and maybe a stage win in the mountains, I will then ride the Tour in the hope that we can get Chris his second victory in the race in as many years. Then my final focus will be the Worlds that are in Colombia this year, so are bound to have a difficult climb in it.
Adam

Well my season will be focused around the Ardennes classics which I will try to get top 10s in, however I will try to defend my national title in the early part of the year, although Adam and Froome will be the favourites on the hilly course. I then plan to ride the Giro to help Adam and to try and get stage win or two in the hillier stages, by going in a break or from a bunch sprint, when the sprinters may be dropped. The focus for the second part of my season will be the Vuelta, which I will be working to support Richie Porte in the mountains, and perhaps attempt to win the points jersey as the hilly courses will suit me more than the pure sprinters. I'll then ride the Tour of Lombardy in the service of Froome and Mikel, although this is may change depending on form coming into the race.

I'm over the moon, I can't believe it, even though I was a favourite I never imagined that I would win it as we were always going to ride for Froome. I went in the break as we only had a few guys, so we didn't want to have to chase, but then nobody wanted to chase me so I managed to hold on with Froome coming in for second. I'm just so happy as I am really going to enjoy wearing the national stripes for the rest of the year and I can't wait until the time trial as the course is really suited to me with a summit finish at the top of Whinlatter Pass, so yeah I'm really happy and I don't think it has had time to sink in yet.
