Latest Update
Some interesting lectures from my Uni course have actually started to open my eyes as to how to actually increase VO2. Duration and Frequency has little effect on training, however Intensity has a great deal of effect. That gives me some focus as to how to continue my training for the next month.
I was going to be starting racing this coming saturday (at the spring time pursuits once more) but considering the amount of snow/ice and lack of training over winter, I quickly sacked that idea. Decided to not start for at least another 4-6 weeks, so you'll all have to wait for my season debut again
This month has been slooooow on the training front. We had some ok weather in the first couple of weeks of January, but I couldn't utilise them as I had exams to revise for. Then of course, post exams, it started to snow. This had the effect after a while on me to make me rearrange my room tidy up and set up the turbo ! So now I've started doing turbo sessions, trying to do them daily. Usually accompanied by watching something like the Giro, or Amstel Gold.
So, there's not much else going on in "sunny" England really. Just waiting for the rain to stop, the ice to thaw, and me to get some good training in. If you're really bored, like me, you can always check out my little blog @ https://rjcleaver.blogspot.com/ Personally I feel checking out someone like Gordan McCauley or Joe Cooper would be more benefical, but there we go.

this is a nice idea, that i might nick if you don't mind. so your based in cheltenham, not a million miles from me. do you do much racing in the west midlands? don't know if you've heard but the west midlands area is holding a 12 race series this season where points are given to the winners and at the end of the year there is an overall winner. i think most races in the west midlands this year are involved. just though your team might be interested cause they encourage riders to enter in teams of 5 riders.
what cat are you at the moment? |

Go for it, nick it all you want, it'll help me motivate myself to train
Based in elsewhere a la moment (uni), but home is indeed Cheltenham. I race whenever there are races close enough to me, so WMidlands yes. Usually up near Stratford, as anywhere else is a little far to go.
I'm a 3rd cat at the moment (oh the shame). But I've got no one but myself to blame for that... should really do some more training...

nothing to be shamed about. i'm still a 4th cat, though last season was the first year i did any road racing so i was just wanting to sit in the bunch and see if i could last the distance. i could and so after a winter of training my main goal this year is to get my 3rd cat lisence, as well as continue to imprive my tt pb's.
maybe i'll see you around at some point this season. |

Getting a 3rd cat is a piece of piss. It's just the next level... and the one after that....
To be honest, if I took the piss out of the system and rode purely 3rd cat races, I'd get the 2nd cat, but then the next year I'd lose it as I probably wouldn't be fit enough to keep it (thats a lie, but I wouldn't be doing very well). Plus racing 3rd cat races mean more chances to win a race
Though I have heard to do Premier Calenders I need a 2nd cat... so I guess I have to get one this year. Eek.

Contrary to popular belief/my own, I'm not as unfit as I'd like people to believe. I did another VO2 max test today, and, once I get the full results in I'll put them up, but basically I reached 415 watts (October I was only able to get 390), and a VO2 of about 4.8 litres. Push that into an actual relative value, and I'm at 69ml.kg.min, which is by far the highest I've ever gotten. I reached 62 last year at peak fitness, and I'm still increasing my training at the moment.
I did a total of 13.5 hours last week and am currently on 9 hours for this week with 2 long days ahead of me. So things are looking up in the slightly-warmer-than-last-month UK.

so you gonna do the shrewsbury crits? i've just had a cold all week which has taken a bit out of my legs but hopefully i did enough over the winter to see me through.
glad to hear your reaching full fitness at the right time. think i've been averaging about 11-12 hours a week throughout the winter. what do your 23.5 hours consist of? is it all on the road or do you use the turbo as well? |

That'd be some of the Elite team. I imagine they'll put out a press release to BC soon enough. They'll be targetting the premier calender races this year, all four of them. (And there has been several hints dropped my way that there is a space next year, and that I get free kit if I'm on the squad, etc, etc.) So no pressure, just have to get my 1st cat license. Hence the paniced training! And late start to racing.
I have finally sorted out my racing plan though.
Start in April:
4th - Ilton crit (52km)
5th - Tom Hawkins (80km)
10th - Castle Comber Easter Classic (52km) - My attacking and showing myself off race.
11th - Ilton Crit (52km)
18 + 19th - Totnes Vire Stage Race - Elite stage race, I may get a space, may not due to cancelled Prem Calender.
26th - Reading RR - Aim is to podium here. Raced this course 4 times now, bout time I do something in it.
30th - Ilton Crit - evening series - elite race (1 hour + 1 lap)

As to your previous question, which I missed, my 13.5 hours that week (only managed to fit in 11 hours this past week, and looks like less this week too due to personal issues.) consists of all road stuff.
Sunday - 3hr/3hr30 on local ride
Mon - 1hr recovery ride
Tue - 2hr, including 1hr chain gang
Wed - 2hr30/3hr30 longer solo ride
Thur - Day off
Fri - 2hr30ish
Sat - 2hr30ish
Repeat.

I fully believe that I can get my 2nd cat. But I guess I have to see how the 1st cat goes. I suppose if I got 100 points on top of my 2nd cat, the team might think, hey, he's got some talent (for an amateur). Heck, I need to get on a team soon cos I need a new bike! (The elite team all get Wilier's)

40 to 2nd
160 to 1st.
So i just need to win two premier calenders this year... or a helluva lot of other placings.
