In the final moments of the transfer period, we have secured Manuel Senni for 160.000, making him our most expensive contract together with Stijn Joseph. Again it's a lot, but we feel Manuel can develop into a future rider on World Tour level.
We also organised a special training camp for Kevin Peeters, more on that will follow.
Our last target on the transfer market is Domagoj Breznik, with him we should get to 18 riders, which will be a decent squad.

Guy is named Senni.
Nice climbing prospect, he was on our shortlist, good luck with him and rest of your team.

Sponsor statements about the 2014 roster
K Lierse SK: "We are really happy with the way the manager has signed riders. With 50% of the team Belgian, we can call this a very local team. And there's a few riders there we can be proud of. Kevin Peeters can win races from the sprint. Francis De Greef is a decent stage racer. Stijn Joseph will be amongst the top cobblers in the Continental Tour. The average age of 24 also shows this team has potential."
Pizza Ullo: "For a co-sponsor, we have to be gratefull to the manager's efforts to bring in Italians. Diego Rosa is already a big name, but it's the smaller names that give us more joy. Manuel Senni has so much potential, while Daniele Dall'Oste and Michele Viola can also make progeress."
The Manager: "I'm really happy with the transfer period. Just to get disappointments out of the way first, Balloni and Boaro. Really annoyed we couldn't sign a time trialist. Our 2 top priorities, Davide Formolo and Louis Vervaeke also went up well over our budget.
Then the good news. Kevin Peeters was probably our best signing, a good sprinter for minimum wage. The same story with Diego Rosa. Stijn Joseph was more expensive, but we needed a good cobbler. We're also happy about the Francis De Greef deal with our friends at Bpost-Vlaanderen.
We also got quite a few talents. Of course Manuel Senni was very expensive, but he has a lot of potential so we're happy to have signed him so soon. Josef Cerny is another name we payed a lot for, but another top rider in a few years. The same can be said about Jasper Stuyven, we really wanted him in our team.
All other riders are still young as well, and all signed for the minimum wage. Our average age pretty much says it all: 24 years (24,2 to be exact). This is a team people will be cheering for. In a few years time, we hope to be a solid PCT team, but we know this first year will be a lot of learning. This team can definitely grow to the top!"

Calendar updated
We are pleased to announce the full calendar of Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo Cycling Team's first year in the peloton. You can find it on the first page. While we mostly stay in Europe, we have a few trips across the pond as well. We even have created some budget for one race in Australia.
We would like to thank the UCI for their flexibility with adjusting our calendar. Unofrtunately, we could not ride Trentino as promised. But our Italian sponsor is ok with that, as we still ride Milano-Turino.

Lierse - Pizza Ullo top on the cobbles?
According to the latest edition of The Cobbler, Lierse - Pizza Ullo is expected to be on top of things during the cobbled races. While this of course very nice to hear, it increases the pressure on Stijn Joseph and his helpers. It is a very good read, so if you haven't already, here you can find the article:

I'm glad to do business with you - our teams can really offer each other a lot. It is worth noting that Peeters started with my team too in my first season but then I let him go. Your team is looking a bit like mine in my first season. Good luck!

Januari overview
Only 2 races in our first month. The Clasico San Cristobal was a huge diappointment for the team. The entire team missed the split and our team leader, Diego Rosa, only managed 43th on 5 minutes from the winner. The race was a big wake up call however, it made us realise how tough the competition for our little team will be.
The Great Ocean Road classic was the least interesting race for our goals, as it was the only one outside or target area. Greg De winde joined the breakaway and they held it to the finishline, with a great second place as a result for our team!
San Cristobal is forgoten, our first good result of the season, we hope we can get a few more of these. Aside from Greg's great result, we also need to mention Stijn Joseph and Kevin Peeters, finishing 18th and 19th respectively.

Februari overview
Februari was the month of our first home race, starting of in the Tour of Benelux. It was a great race for the team, with really aggrsive riding, introducing ourselves to the Belgian public. Jasper Stuyver grabbed the Mountain jersey in day 1, and Stijn Joseph took it over. With another 3rd place on the cobble stage, he made this a very good race. Unfortunately the team was caught of guard in a flat stage, and we lost a lot of time there, losing a good GC. Still, that one mistake can't deny our great and attractive racing.
After this, we had Dwars Door Vlaanderen, where we had to fight the bigger teams. Greg De Winde joined the attack, while Stijn Joseph and Louis Verhelst stayed with the elite group. A 13th and 20th is something we can be happy about!

Not a bad result indeed.

The First Victory
We did not expect this post to come so early in the season, and we definitely did not expect it coming from a Pro Continental Tour race. Yet here we are, the first stage of the Driedaagse De Panne - Koksijde was won by Stijn Joseph of Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo Cycling Team.
The strong field of this race forced us to play all or nothing. Our team leader, Stijn Joseph, went in the early breakaway, hoping he could follow the big guns when they attacked.
Picking up some boni seconds along the way, he waited, and waited, and waited. They did not come. So Blot and he dropped their compagnions, and went for glory. And suddenly, they were sprinting for the win.
Despite being in the worst position, Stijn won the race. He was simply unstoppable today. He takes the stage win, the leaders jersey and the point jersey. What a day for him and the team!

The future is bright!
It's been a while since we had anything to write about, but today we had another win, and it was an important one. In the Tour de l'Avenir, we were facing the best of the best, but our alliance with Gazelle payed off. We came close to a win a few times, and today it was there. Nikita Umerbekov won the 7th stage after being the fastest in a breakaway!

Season overview
With only stage wins and mountain classifications, we can't call our first year a success. However, some good racing showed us we have a lot of potential, so we want to keep the team together. Yes, we failed all our goals, so our sponsors won't be too happy, but I do hope for a bit of extra money for 1-2 top riders.
Our cobble department was considered to be amongst the best, but results were lacking. Stijn Joseph won a big stage in De Panne, very important for our sponsors to beat the big guys in our home nation. But in most other races, the victory went to the breakaway, which was disappoiting.
For the sprints we relied on Kevin Peeters. We may ave ourselves to blame for not giving him a proper leadout, but finishing the season without a win was well below expectations. Said to be the steal of the year, the pressure may have gotten to him.
In stage racing, our hopes were on Francis De Greef and also a bit on Diego Rosa. It wasn't easy against better riders, but both got us a decent amount of points. De Greef provided us with a few solid GC results.
The puncheur department was too weak this year. Unfortunately, as we learned, it's a very important part of the Continental Tour. Rosa was our leader here, but he wasn't up for it yet.
Luckily we have quite a few talents emerging: Josef Cerny, Nikita Umerbekov, Manuel Senni, Edward Theuns, Jasper Stuyven and Daniele Dall'Oste all made good progress this year and should be able to give better results next year.

The National
In Belgium we showed ourselves, Italy was a bit less and the true success came from the Czech Republic. Josef Cerny, riding solo, decided to jump to the morning breakaway.
He was definitely the strongest and accelerated on the last cobble section.
A great win for him, he'll be wearing the national jersey next year!
