Tour of Oman - Stage 1
11th February / 2.HC
The first stage of the race is probably the best opportunity for the sprinters, with a relatively flat day which should end in a bunch sprint unless a surprise attack succeeds. The favourite is Viviani, who's the biggest sprinter here. Haussler could do well if he has a good day.
We skip straight to the closing stages, with the break dealt with comfortably by the sprinters' teams. Orica have set up a train and are giving their leader Kruopis a great leadout. Haussler is also well-positioned, in Ciolek's wheel.
Into the final kilometre, Kruopis has a big lead thanks to his Orica teammates. Haussler and Ciolek are now getting into their stride though, and could pose problems for the Lithuanian.
As the line nears, Kruopis is clearly fatiguing. Haussler is in second and is closing, but is it fast enough for victory?
It isn't! Kruopis rasies his arms, victory is his on day one in Oman and so is the leaders jersey.
Haussler has to settle for second in the end, not a bad result at all, which could well have been the win if his sprint had begun a little earlier. Pelucchi also just sneaks into the top ten.
There's always tomorrow, and Heinrich could well take advantage of his advantageous GC position as a result of this on tomorrow's hills late in the stage. A good start for the team.

Tour of Oman - Stage 2
12th February, 2014 / 2.HC
Stage 2 is flat like yesterday, but two small hills near inside the final 10 kilometres before a fast downhill finish could influence the sprinters' speed. We'll see what we can do, with Haussler and Frank both options depending on the influence of the hills.
Into the final kilometres, a two-man breakaway is still up the road when we reach the penultimate climb. We send Reichenbach onto the front to try and pull them back, as well as take the sting out of the weaker sprinters' legs.
Onto the final climb, Brammeier and Boaro still have a 30 second gap. The peloton is closing behind though, with us contributing to the pace.
They are pulled back as the climb is hit, and the speed slows in the peloton with the teams with big sprinters not wanting to push too hard.
This is fine by us, as it gives Frank the opportunity to attack with 5 kilometres left. He duly obliges!
Cannondale Caruso and Basso set off in pursuit immediately, but Frank still has a small gap going onto the final, steep downhill. More importantly though, there is an interestingly large 35 second gap opening up behind!
Frank still holds the lead on the down hill, with Caruso trying to cross the gap. With the peloton behind, it looks like these three will contest the stage!
Behind, Kolobnev gives chase, desperate to shut the gap. Locked in his wheel is Haussler, ready to pounce if it's required.
Nearing the line for the front three, Frank still holds the lead, albeit a small one. Can he hold off the to Italians?
He can - just about! Frank takes the stage, our first win of the season. Great effort from him today, attacking at the right time and holding on for victory.
Caruso and Basso round off the podium.
Haussler wins the peloton sprint comfortably to take fourth, with Kluge and Saramontins also finishing in the top ten with seventh and ninth placed finishes respectively. Not a bad day for us then!
The GC is looking great as well. Frank takes 20 bonus seconds, launching him into second overall, on the same time as leader Kruopis. Not bad, seeing as we don't have to chase! Haussler sitting in third is also a bonus for us. We also lead in three classifications. Things can't get any better!

Thanks! Our tactics worked well, and everything went perfectly. Always satisfying when you win on extreme. Frank is well placed now for the overall as well, which is a good bonus. |

So, my computer packed it in today and I could quite possibly lose a lot of stuff, including the save. That means this is on hold I guess until its fixed/I get a new one in which case I might have to end this.
Hopefully that's not the case though, don want another of my stories gone to technical difficulties. Nothing I can do for now I guess. Sorry for those following. |
