Well I just played the first of the cobbled stages (the supposed easiest one) AND.....
Spoiler
There was more action than you can shake a stick at. It was really brutal as well.
the report will be up in the morning. I hope I can do it justice.
@ duxili - Keep those comments coming, that is exactly what a good community story needs.

Dammit I don't need that type of suspense with a 51 COB guy!
I loved our attacking spirit, but the wrong people though. I thought Roulston might have wanted to save himself for the next stage, but nonetheless we picked up considerable UC points!
And WTF Galdos, did he crash?

Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!

Looking forward to the first cobblestage. Brutal sounds like good old-fashioned entertainment. Maybe just the right entertainment for Cartoon Network to try to get the broadcast rights? Probably not.

Yay, go Eekhout, hopefully he'll do well in the cobbles too. Hmm, I wasn't hoping for a hard cobble stage, my GC men aren't so good there. |

STAGE 3: Middelkerke - Oudenaard 198 KM's
Stage Favourites:
*****Duque(CRL) ****Steegmans(BOR) ***Cooke(AER)
**Eeckhout(SEM) *Felline(CRE)
The first cobbled stage is supposedly the easiest but an aggressive start will no doubt put the vast majority in the hurt locker.
Just like stage 2 many many riders tried to get into the break today, attacking as if their lives depended on it. The thing was many riders who have abilities to win on a stage like this attacked. Konovalovas; Chainel; Devolder; Saramotins; Quinziato and Offredo were the most notable attackers early on.
With 124 kilometres to go the tour of the chosen experiences its first cobbled section. A 17 man break including Offredo, Chainel and Rosseler have 2'05 over the peloton being led by Quinziato.
This break was way too strong so a number of the teams that were not represented worked had to bring the break back. It do not happen immediately. But, the break was caught with 98 kilometres to go.
2 MEN ATTACK
With 96 kilometres to go two solid riders for this terrain, Grabsch and Sieberg attack out of the peloton. A good move by the Germans who grind their way up the cobble paved hill.
BUT THE ATTACKING IS NOT OVER
With 86 kilometres to go Tuft and Bodnar attack.
With 84 kilometres to go Roulston, Bak and Hansen attack. Jesus Hernandez, surprisingly, attacks despite not being considered a rider in the same stature as the others on the offensive.
All of these rides group together with the Germans so we have 8 strong men out front.
Behind much of the pace setting is done by Iberia. The peloton is constantly breaking into smaller groups thanks to Iberia. Caruso of Iberia is constantly being dropped, he is being forgotten by his teammates who are dead set on protecting the pink jersey.
With 53 kilometres to go the break reach a max advantage of 4'40. They are now down to 7 riders..... Hernandez has been dropped.
Between 70 and 30 kilometres to go the front of the peloton keeps splintering to a 10 rider selection. Significantly always in this group are a cluster of Iberia riders, the pink jersey and Gadret, who is being well protected by Boeing teammate Puccio.
Boeing and Iberia are the main teams on the front of the peloton but are struggling to control the break. The 7 man break have 3'50 with 34 kilometres to go.
Quinziato keeps towing 30 or so riders back to the head of the peloton. Most of the GC climbers are present at the head of the peloton apart from Nieve who punctures with 30 kilometres to go.
This strong 7 man break are just too strong. Knowing the names it is a surprise they were allowed to get away in the first place. With 22 kilometres to go the break have 3'18 over the peloton.
Tuft and Hansen put in a big attack with 18 kilometres to go before being clawed back. Festina Watches have the advantage in the break with 2 riders.
With 8 kilometres to go the cobbles are over for the day and we reach the last obstacle before the flat run in, a small hill. It does for Sieberg so the break are down to 6 riders. The break still have over 3'00 on the peloton behind which is now being led by Duque.
When the peloton reach this spot.... Gusev attacks... Millar counters him before going on a solo attack. However, both give up the fight when they can't shake the peloton which is down to around 25 riders... Niemiec has just been dropped.
The break fight out the sprint. Everyone cleary sees Roulston as the danger man. So from way Way Way out he has starts his sprint first.......
.......
Roulston has almost shook everyone, Bak looks strong but is not making ground on the Tebag rider. However, Hansen is stuck like a limpet on the wheel.......
Win for GATORADE
Hansen powered out of Roulston's wheel and claimed a convincing win in great company. With time gaps he will now wear the pink jersey.
A 26 man GC group come home @ 3'20 with the, now former, pink jersey and a larger one comes home @ 4'04.
Big disappointment on the day has to be Steegmans who has to be thankful for Sieberg's great performance to take questions away.
AND... It is Ironic Iberia scored no UC points after leading the peloton much more than any other team on the day

No UC points indeed, but I'm satisfied.
Why? Well, my choosing tactic seems to work out. Millar will win a lot of time in TTs this tour, and will also win quite some time on most pure climbers on the cobbled stages as well, while only really losing time on the long climbs(he's only 2 HI less than the best puncheur)
How the fuck did Caruso hang on though?!
Shame Navarro & Gadret could hang on though.

He even put in a nice little attack just before the finish, which is a good sign.
The only time I ever saw Caruso was with about 60 kilometres to go and he was a good 70 riders back... so I don't know!
@ Selwink - He is doing too much work in the early stages closing down the mammoth breaks!
EDIT -- Gadret was not 'hanging' on he was constantly up there and even finished second in the bunch sprint.... Cyclocross skills coming handy maybe.

Yes. Though I'm afraid the AI will threat him different now that Iberia lost his yellow jersey...
Edit: And yeah, I know Gadret did well, he was the only climber I expected to do well here.
But well, more cobbled stages are coming, yay

Why would Burghardt do work, as he is the best cobbler, while Duque does no work? I don't get it

Well that was not the most difficult/ selective cobbled stage. Duque would have won if the break was not out front so gunning for Duque looked to be the right decision. Burghardt may lead the next cobbled stage.
@ Jesleyh - Not good for my Marmite team. If I increase some of their cobble stats by 10 that won't break the game right? |

It was a tough day for Cartoon Network. We didn't get any UC points but on such a chaotic stage, one can hardly expect to get lucky enough. Our only rider for such a stage, Quinziato, showed a great performance. We were keen on getting into the first break and hoped that the other teams would treat the break lightly. But supposedly the break was too big. It was a tough call when Quinziato had to remain back there with Navarro, but seeing how the peloton thinned out and how Navarro bravely kept himself in the yellow jersey group, it was definitely the right one. We are confident in Quinziato's abilities to shine on the following cobble stages too. We hope that Quinziato gets another shot, but it's more important that Navarro will not lose any time in the following cobble stages before we hit the mountains.
To make it short: Veeery happy with Navarro and Quinziato.

Well done by Grabsch, but disappointed to see Schumacher so far back. Guess that settles Kern as our GC hope...

Surprisingly there was deception in the bus bringing us back to our hotel:
Lars wanted to win the stage so bad that he is disapointed with his 3 place,
Maciej wanted the pink and finds himself short of 3'',
Gorka wanted to stick with the best and los 1'.
I guess it was due to the fatigue of the day and that they diserved some
"Guys! Please give me a .
Are you kidding here? Did you expect to get it easy?
Tha is a great day for Festina, for the second day in a row we were in the main break and this time we have been rewarded by nice finishing place.
We are the best team today and overall second!
Some riders have been stronger than us. You know what? You'll beat them tomorrow!"
So finally some started to show up. Hope it will pay off for tomorrow

Amador finishing in the 3 minute group is pretty great, taking almost a minute on some GC riders. |
