Uff... Seems like a monster task to do very well in your first season... But if they all develop nicely, you might get a solid pro-conti squad out of the riders you have there in a few seasons...

(Are you playing with random potential? Would give the story a nice twist Wink Plus, what kind of development speed are you using?)

Will be quite a challenge indeed. But to be honest, I enjoy it more to win in very rare occasions or to suprise with an unknown guy in a big event instead of winning half the races I'm doing Wink

@miggi: Just the potentials given by the PCM Daily DB (but I'm sure they gave Ewan and Herklotz a realistic high potential) and the standard development speed set by the game automatically Wink I hope these talented 18 year olds will be able to fight for some wins in .2-races now and in .1 and .HC races after a year or two.

Team ABUS selection: Damien Howson.

The adventure for Team ABUS begins. Damien Howson is the first to show the white-red-black outfit for the team, as well as the Cannondale-bikes, the Shimano-wheels and the Rudy Projekt-helmets.

Damien is a specialist in TT, but he’s not exactly the only one Down Under… Richie Porte is the new Australian champion, Damien finishes a strong fifteenth. Not a bad result for a 20-year old in this pro field!

Team ABUS selection: Caleb Ewan, Damien Howson

Another warm-up race for our Aussies before they hit European roads. Well, warm-up... Our young guns are facing the best Down Under offers, but that doesn’t scare courageous Damien Howson. Motivated by his time trial result and the positive reactions of the fans, he immediately sets off and gets the support of Justin Morris. But the bunch keeps pressure high…

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0005_zps025bdd4d.png

WorldTour-teams Orica - GreenEdge and Saxo - Tinkoff want to neutralize all attacks in favor of their leaders, but after some hard work Howson and Morris get a green light to go. One more guy makes the jump: Tommy Nankervis. With a good cooperation, the leading trio gains an advantage of 4’30”. In the meantime, little Caleb Ewan gets in the mix with the pro guys in the peloton.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0006_zps0ab095c7.png

With 40 to go, the WorldTour-guys think it’s time to start the rumble. Young Caleb is happy to be able to hang on when the tempo goes up, but in front Howson and company also have something left in the tank. They keep doing turns well, and manage to resist the pressure of the back. 15 kilometers away from finish line, still looking at a two minutes gap, we even start dreaming of the impossible... We shouldn’t have done: Nankervis keeps his feet on the ground and leaves his former breakaway companions alone with a strong solo effort. Away he goes, the title is gone. Our brave Howson gets a first lesson in riding in a pro peloton: his best forces were lost before the deciding moment.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0007_zps016b7d97.png

In the background, the big guys realize they’ll be too late. With a desperate attack Simon Gerrans unleashes hell, but all he can do is see Nankervis enjoy his biggest career win. Howson doesn’t save a podium spot: he’s passed by four of the favorites in the final kilometers, but does manage to outsprint Morris for sixth place. Still a great result!

2/2/2013 Vamos a la playa

Time to pack, Spain is calling. In the preparation for our continental goals on the program, we managed to conquer a wildcard for the tours of Mallorca and Algarve. As from tomorrow, we will be facing guys like Alberto Contador, Bradley Wiggins and Ryder Hesjedal in the crosswinds and the mountains on the island of Mallorca. Nervous? Seeing our eight youngsters tremble in their hotel rooms, I would say so…

3/2/2013 Vuelta a Mallorca, stage 1/4

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0012_zpsfaaa96bd.png

Selection Team ABUS: David Bartl, Kajetan Fricke, David Hesselbarth, Damien Howson, Jan Keller, Marcel Meisen, Jakob Steigmiller, Frank Wagner.

The European season for our guys kicks off on Spanish soil, with a criterium in the harbor of Palma de Mallorca. Bearing in mind the fierce competition and the first objective for all of our guys – get some race rhythm – our sports director asks the guys to stay in the wheels. A good choice, it seems: a brake of nine gets caught in the last lap and the bunch sprints for one of the first bouquets of flowers of the season.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0013_zps2fe69390.png

Marcel Meisen does whatever he can but lacks the speed and power to manage any result. All he can do is watch Katusha take a deserved 1-2. The other Team ABUS-guys don’t get caught in the falls and finish in the bunch.

4/2/2013 Vuelta a Mallorca, stage 2/4

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0014_zps9ec75445.png

Interesting stage 2 in Mallorca, full of mountain and intermediate sprints. Damien Howson wants to show he worked hard in Australia and warns our DS that he doesn’t want to hide in the pack for three more days. Our Aussie gets a green light to try and do something today.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0015_zps26acdb79.png

We have not even left the streets of Campos when Howson already stretches his legs. He conquers the first KOM-points of the Tour, and then gets the company of Carazzo, Bertazzo and Delaplace. A completely harmless group, but the Katushateam of leader Kristoff thinks otherwise. They start a fierce hunt and catch all leading riders. All of them but… brave Damien. He wants to use the chance the management gave him today and attacks right before the bunch falls on his neck. With success: our Australian hard rider starts a solo attack that will last more than 100 kilometers…

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0020_zps3a9131df.png

Howson passes first on all five mountain sprints of the day: he will be a proud KOM shirt wearer tomorrow! What’s more: Damien hasn’t forgotten the lesson of the Australian champs and leaves some energy in the pocket for the final. Then again, we quickly realize that a maximal gap of six minutes won’t be enough to surprise the sprinter teams. Our hero of the day gets intercepted with 13 k to go by a pack led by Bardiani, Belkin and Caja Rural.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0021_zps00ffc2c9.png

Time for our other guys to try and show the Team ABUS jersey. After a calm stage, Marcel Meisen has quite some energy left to try to do better than yesterdays sprint. David Hesselbarth, Jan Keller and David Bartl also feel fine and must give our leader a hand. But then hell breaks loose: an Ag2r-rider makes a mistake in one of the final turns and falls, Marcel is one of the first guys to go down too.

What follows is a massacre: half of the pack goes down or is blocked by the fall. Luckily we only have one more rider on top of the pile of meat lying on the ground: Jakob Steigmiller. He and Marcel only have minor wounds, the two can make their way up till the finish line after searching for their bikes… Three other riders of Team ABUS loose time getting behind the fall, amongst them attacker Howson.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0022_zpsb2d6b30f.png

In the front, we see a strange sprint after the fall taking out quite some expected sprint contenders and their lieutenants. Marc Renshaw makes Belkin happy with the win, David Hesselbarth (7th) and Jan Keller (10th) please Team ABUS with two solid top ten places. Thanks to David Bartl (23d) we even move up to second place in the team classification, in front of all WorldTour teams. What an exciting start of the season!

5/2/2013 Vuelta a Mallorca, stage 3/4

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0025_zps573031b6.png

Time for some mountains today: with the Col de Soller and the Puig Major we hit some famous obstacles. Off course we realize we don’t have any guy capable of hurting the likes of Alberto Contador and Bradley Wiggins, but the atmosphere in the group is great after the good ride of yesterday. This morning, we are surprised by a phone call from our sponsors: they are very pleased with the mountains jersey and give Damien Howson courage to try to hold on for another day.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0027_zpsba437ae1.png

The moral support helps. At the bottom of the first climb, right after the start, Damien counters the acceleration of a Lotto - Belisol rider that opens the fireworks. A tiny tad overambitious from our polkadot guy, since the attacker’s name is… Jurgen Van den Broeck. Howson explodes after a couple of hectometers in the backwheel of VdB and needs to drift back to the bunch. He will lose the climbers jersey today. Van den Broeck gets the company of Alejandro Porto and Stefano Pirazzi, in the bunch there’s some time for sightseeing…

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0030_zps80b1ed25.png

When VDB and company build up an advantage of 6’30”, Belkin takes his responsibility. The Dutch team of leader Marc Renshaw and favorite Luis Leon Sanchez boosts the speed, our guys immediately realize that this queen stage will be a little bit different then the flat stage of yesterday. Our sprint train takes it easy and buys a ticket for the big bus, while David Hesselbarth drops off our climbers Kajetan Fricke and Jakob Steigmiller at the front of the pack on the foot of the Soller, the first of two decisive climbs.

i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r730/sisse_PPDB/PCM0031_zps7e68ce9a.png

There’s light at the end of the tunnel, but not for our guys. Like expected, Contador attacks early and makes the race explode. Exploding is also what the legs of our youngsters do. After a desperate fight, they have to let go the big favorites group on the Puig Major. Fricke and Steigmiller give everything they have, just to finish outside top 70 and lose almost fifteen minutes on a dominant Alberto Contador. Well guys, that’s a lesson in humility, but heads up: I’m sure our climbers will show some nice things in the UCI 2.2 stage races we’re aiming at.
