I so hope we won't see crashes today, but I fear for it
It's Corsica. It's not a question of will we see crashes, it's a question of which GC guys will lose time and be hurt by crashes between today and next sunday

What? Really?
Yeah last year things got really long, at least before we spun off the Sky Doping Thread. But the year before that with the intense finishing stages, it was even harder to keep up.
I'll be here as often as I can be with whoever else wants to live blog the race on these threads. Always fun. I have yet to pick which case of beer I will work through as the Tour progresses this year though.
Anyway stage 1 - plenty of crashes as always. Cavendish should take this comfortably - there is no way he will miss out on a chance to wear yellow.

Won't catch this today. Leaving in a bit to spend 14 hours wearing a f***ing suit in 38ΒΊ heat at a wedding. I really hate weddings. Bah.

And we're off!
Ironically, 1 kilometer after the start Froome already has bike issues and is now behind the peloton |

So which team will have the first faller? Blanco or Euskaltel? Euskaltel have a strong history of falling, but Blanco have been in fine form this year so the question is - can form beat experience?

I'm going Blanco on this one. They seem to have been in good form all year so far, I just hope the other teams training won't put them out of it.

Froome back in the peloton.
Meanwhile, brilliant formation flying in the colours of the French flag by their airforce. |

Considering the form Blanco\Belkin have been in everyone would want it to be Euskaltel. Those crashes in Turkey and the Giro are enough to worry any sprinter or contender . |

A Belkin rider (Boom?) and no Vichot in the break, if not for that everything is what you would expect.
Also Andy Schleck catching up with his old drinking buddy O'Grady.

Boom
Flecha
Lemoine
Lobato
Cousin
is the actual breakaway. Nice seeing Boom and Flecha there in especially. |

My bet is on Greipel ahead of Kittel with Cavendish 3rd. Last 2km are straight, with the final 500m slightly downhill and a tiny bit of tailwind (3m/s). This all favors the heavy guys.
I do not find the OPQS team strong enough to position Cavendish perfectly which is crucial today. I reckon Cavendish might also get too eager in his surge for yellow.
No matter what it will be extremely close. |

Could be that it was neither Euskaltel nor Belkin (have to get used to calling them that now):

The Swedish commentators are excellent 99% of the time, but calling Kristoff "one of the world's five best sprinters" is taking Nordic nationalism a bit far, I think...
I'm calling Cousin for the polkadot jersey.

Yeah so did I. Harmon has had some personal issues lately (battling Depression) so may not feel up to it. But I wouldn't be surprised if Harmon comes in later, once we get closer to the finish. Commentating for 5-6 hours straight for three weeks would be relaly hard on the vocal chords.

He initially planned to do the Tour, even tweeting last month about looking forward to it, however it looks as if he's not up to it.
Shame, but Kirby has been getting a lot better recently, I'm quite happy with him now. (But I'd take Harmon any day)

I'm hoping for Lobato to take the polkadot jersey as I have him on some of my manager teams I expect him to be the fastest in the group, but I have no idea how hard the climb is. I suppose Boom is the strongest.
