My team here is crappy, so cannot really complain about that stage as the team has no GC aspirations at all. Slight concern is that Sulzberger is possibly hurt, team seemed to go back for him which is a nice thing to do!
Initially I was a bit bummed to see no breakaway attempt at all from my team, but then it is probably best to try and save ourselves for chasing for the sprints. Stage 3 really does look like a really does look a good profile for Van Stayen, that is where our Vuelta begins.
The finale was uphill so a hilly rider won, but other than that this was the easiest hilly stage of this Vuelta so any rider losing time here is really bad. Eastman was down to foolishness in going for the break, if he keeps going for breaks and the King of the Mountains fair enough but I suspect he will not. Uran is a major disappointment for Milka, likewise Rujano for Pokerstars though if this results in a Henao/Sella like performance I guess they will not complain.
For Ricco and Schleck of course a wasted opportunity as well, at least Koenigsegg tried something!
Congrats Wiggle, beginning to make up for a shocking Giro perhaps.

Good to see Topchanyuk try for the breakaway
Other than that, it was just as expected. Stage 3 should suit us and Impey more. Though, seeing the racing in California, Van Stayen will be a tough one, but hopefully Impey can get on his wheel and thus fight for a podium.
Congratulations to Wiggle! I really like rjc's team, and seeing them grab a win is nice. |

If Vanendert would have won, the entire podium would have been ours.
I was cheering to my computer as he was going. He went a whole season doing almost nothing for me but I still feel so attached to him. A Vuelta stage win would have been fantastic. Alas, it wasn't to be.
Thanks for the nice comments about this stage and last one guys, it really does mean a lot to know that they are enjoyed.

GET IN! Well, that made up for the shocking Giro (in terms of points anyway). Long may it continue!
First victory of the season too. |

I have no idea why, but Ricco has been nothing like the last 2 seasons. I can count the attacks he has done this season on one hand.
Atleast his prologue was decent, and he didn't lose time on stage 2.

I also cheer for Cornu when he's racing. After Gesink, he's the most important rider that rode for my team
Vanendert is having quite a decent season even though he barely gets to lead the team. So far, he was the team's leader only in Tirreno, where he almost got a stage win as well.

The Project already scored about 1/5 of what I managed to bring home from the Giro with Fothen in 5th GC.
Really sucks for those whose leaders fell behind, especially Úran who has/had a shot at 3rd-4th.
Contador did nothing today, but he was never really in danger as Chris Anker could pull things quite easily back together. None of my riders felt it was worth the while sprinting at the end, but I can't really complain as these sort of stages is all about getting past them without losing time to the competitors.
Looking forward to see if Guerao can do something tomorrow or if some of the big guns want to try to get some action. There are plenty of opportunities to take on a stage like "tomorrow".

That was an exciting stage, I'm surprised it broke up as much as it did. Glad to remain anonymous there, as it looks like Nibali was on the verge of ending up behind that split. Bummer for Roman about Uran, so frustrating.

Decent start for Uran, definetely not bad. Hopefully he can limit his losses in hilly stages in this Vuelta, otherwise this will be quite similar story to Henao's Giro.
What can I say, probably only...

Why oh why was it Gastauer attacking at the perfect time, rather than Schleck. Typically bad AI on such a stage really, but congrats to Wiggle!

I would say it's more like 1/3. I'm pretty sure we already scored over 200 points from these first 2 stages

Just realised - both GTs so far a team has gone 1-2 in the first stage. Who will it be at the Tour I wonder?

No idea, but it will be a 1-2-3-4-5, at least

Actually, it would be quite hard for the same team to finish both in first and second place

Ah, forgot the TTT was first up Knew I should have checked before posting!
There we go then. Every GT in 2013, Stage 1 ends with the same team having a rider in 1st and 2nd in GC.

Unless the TTT is a tie
Not a bad stage for me, every hilly stage without timeloss is probably good.

Congrats to Wiggle, really like that team, so seeing them take the first win of the season in GT is nice.
Very nice and deep report too!

Unless the entire peloton crashes and leaves two of my guys soloing it to the line, it most certainly wont by Festina - I have brought my absolute shitties GT lineup ever - and hopefully I'll never sink that low again. But seeing how the Giro and Tour went last season I simply didn't want to risk it happening again. On hindsight I should have put Fothen in the Tour again to fight for a top 10. But oh well...
