Nothing wrong with being last... I'll think about the jersey, but i like the standard one a lot

We missed the split and then it was just too late to get across. I totally screwed the chase up. I had 3 guys about 30" behind Mauro over the top. If Mauro waited then a concerted team effort could have pulled some time back

This is a very very special post. 1 Year ago i joined the site, and to the minute (at least it was when i hit post) i made my first post. It was the introduction to my first story attempt, and the original Chasing Legends challenge. 1 year later i've passed 5000 posts and get to mark the moment with my latest Chasing Legends update. Without getting to into things, this has been the best year ever (only in part thanks to Daily), and i promise to be here in another years time hopefully posting another Chasing Legends update.


Stage 4: Policastro Bussentino - Serra San Bruno


The Preview

Stage 4 is an enormously long 243km! Most of it is fairly flat riding south along the coast, before cutting inland late on to tackle to climbs. The first is a Cat.3 before the showpiece of the day, Cat.2 Croce Ferrata. The climb tops out 5km before the finish, so the winner is hard to predict.

Favorites: Nibali, Evans, Hesjedal

Team Plan: We'll take a day off from the break and just conserve on such a long run. We'll play the final climbs as they come, but lets just get Mauro over the top as near the front as possible

243km to go The longest day of the race gets underway. The sun is shining and its a beautiful day for a bike ride

242km No waiting today as the first attacks come swiftly. Rodriguez, Pietropolli, Hansen, Longo Borghini and Mestra are the first to go

No waiting on this monster day


241km Bonafond, Bole, Golas, Tuft, Vicioso and Tuft all quickly get across to swell the leading group

235km Popovych, Martens, Colberlli and Jeanesson make the group even larger. Sky and Astana come to the fore and start a chase

230km There's an attack in the leading group from Longo Borghini. Tuft, Golas, Mestre, Pietropolli, Vicioso and Cummings follow him down the road

229km The rest of the attackers are caught leaving the 7 left ahead

225km Sella, Pirazzi, Dupont, De Greef, Jeanesson and Valls want to get in on the action, but Sky shuts them down instantly. And with that the break is set for the day.

35km Tuft wins the KoM sprint! The break leads Rabottini by 2'35, with the peloton a further 20" behind.

25km Rabottini has been caught by the driving power of Sky, and the gap is 2'36

23km On the rolls before the final climb Killer makes a move!

14km Sky pull back Cadel and the other late attackers. But Smau makes a move, followed by Kruijswick, Evans, Intxausti, Rubiano, Visconti and Wiggins! But they don't stick

Comment
Much, much better day. Matteo did a good job on the first climb, decent effort, promising for when he goes for the KoM. Killer was awesome! Timed the attack to perfection then rode beautifully to catch the break and shatter it. If only the climb was 2km shorter i reckon he would have won the stage, but oh well. Mauro was actually quite comfortable all the way up the climb. Despite the attacks the pace for the most part was fairly easy. He also put in a good finish to grab a few seconds back.
Tomorrow could be a great day. Both Andriato and Gatto have decent finishes and its uphill towards the line.

Stage 5: Cosenza - Matera

Stage 5 clocks in at just under 200k. There are two Cat.3 climbs to target, on a mostly flat day. But its the final 25km where things get good. The second of the Cat.3's then a 10k or so drag uphill. There are a few km of flat at the top, making this an interesting stage.

Favorites: Goss, Degenkolb, Ventoso

Team Plan: Put Taborre in the move to grab the KoM jersey back if possible. If not then no break. See if we can get Gatto in the finish, even if that means making a risky move or two.

Yeeeeessssssss!!!! Defying the sprinters like that is potentially my best ever PCM moment, just felt so amazing. Big thanks to Bak for making the move, otherwise it would have been a Top10. Also great to get Taborre back into Blue for another few days. Tomorrow is a flat day so back round to Chicchi.

Today is a 153km flat stage up along the coast. There are, as always, two IS points, but no KoM sprints on an almost totally flat day. There are few lumps and rolls in the second half, but nothing that will put anyone under pressure

So the quiet transitional sprint stage turned into a ragged fight of survival... Made the decision to put Gatto in the break because of the late nature of its formation. Didn't lose that much energy and had a decent shot at beating the odds again. Got Mauro through the crashes, but unfortunately Chicchi couldn't feature heavily in the sprint.
Tomorrows a hilly day, so we have to watch out. Not looking for a win per se, mostly not to lose time

That's not a good Giro. Yes, great job for Vini but seing Benatti win a sprint stage is definetly not realistic against Degenkolb and Cavendish, wha hasn't even won a stage yet.
