Disappointing start so far in terms of results, but still early days. |

To clearify a few things: I'm racing at EXTREME difficulty and many excellent sprinters are present in the Tour Down Under. In terms of sprint stats there are at least 10 better sprinters participating in the race! I do not expect Hagen to win from Sagan, Greipel, Kittel, Guardini and Degenkolb in the sprints and do not expect him to win or even finish on the podium in many stages. I do agree that a few places higher should be possible with a little more luck. The goal is to finish at a top 10 position in the general standings with Hagen or Thomas. With difficult and hilly stages still to come this is an excellent posibility as many climbers already lost quite some time. Personally I do not see these results as too dissapointing, but more as realistic.
Thanks a lot for reading....
Edit after stage 3: You're right. It is dissapointing...

Stage 3: Unley - Stirling 139 km
Edvald Boasson Hagen - Bernhard Eisel - Mathew Hayman - Luke Rowe - Chris Sutton - Geraint Thomas
Tankink arrived first at the Skoda King of the Mountain sprint before Gruzdev and Delage. Tankinkg and Gruzdev take off, while Delage was caught by the pack.
Tankink also took the first Jayco intermediate sprint at Longwood Road before Gruzdev. The pack followed at 2 minutes. Degenkolb took the last point just before Petacchi.
Tankink also secured the second Jayco sprint. Both attackers still had a 3 minute lead on the pack, where Degenkolb once more took the last second.
Dennis, Sorensen, Izagirre and Quintana escaped from the pack and tried to link up with Tankink and Gruzdev.
Due to several attacks by Martin, Kwiatkowski and Caruso the pack quickly gained ground on the breakaway. With 10 kilometers to go one by one the attackers are caught. Izagirre and Quintana held out a little longer.
In the sprint it was very suprisingly Hoogerland who won before Bouhanni and Machando.

Thomas and Boasson Hagen maintained in front of the pack nicely when the pack prepared to sprint for the stage win. Thomas managed to push to 8th position and Boasson Hagen had chosen the wheel of Peter Sagan, at that time an excellent choice. However in the sprint Sagan stalled and was passed by others, resulting that Boasson Hagen got boxed in. Several non sprinters managed to do really well by sprinting from very far. A missed chance for the Sky Team.

Edvald Boasson Hagen - Bernhard Eisel - Mathew Hayman - Luke Rowe - Chris Sutton - Geraint Thomas

Kohler and Brutt did sprint for the Jayco intermediate sprint at Springton. Kohler won. With 37 kilometers to go the pack was still more than 5 minutes behind.
Grabsch has left the other escapies behind. But eventually everybody is caught.

I tried to send guys into the breakaways in the first three stages as well but failed. Those Argos guys chased everybody to score some points with Degenkolb at the intermediate sprints. Or perhaps it was revenge for stopping with the Argos story. Nevertheless, I like it a lot that it is difficult to get into breakaways. This is much more realistic than I was used to in PCM11. Or is it a result of racing with extreme difficulty and that AI is cheating? |

Stage 5 will be a very important race in which undoubtfully the Tour Down Under will be decided. After his stage-win in stage 4 Sagan is the favourite for the victory, while Degenkolb struggled to tag along in the hilly third stage. Also the Sky riders Thomas and Boasson Hagen have their minds set on todays stage. For Boasson Hagen a sprint will be most desirable, while Thomas will try to secure the victory by an attack on the first passage of the Willunga Hill...

Yes, I'm aiming higher, but as long as I'm still getting used to PCM12 and extreme, I'm happy to score some World Tour Points. |
