The Rider of the Month is Allan Davis!Smile

Not too much of a shock, given his solid race in Australia, and dominating win in Qatar. In 12 days of racing, he reached the podium 8 times. He had 4 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, and won the points rankings in Tour of Qatar as well.

Christoph Meschenmoser of Skil-Shimano is rewarded with his Top 10 finish at the Tour of Qatar with the Young Rider of the Month Award.

Not much to report on the Discovery front today. The Tour of Malaysia is underway, but the big news is the return of superstar Tom Boonen to the saddle. His season will start Feb. 10th in the Continental Tour race Coppa costa delgi Etruschi in Italy.

I have begun contract negotiations with some of our riders for next year. Negotiations with Danish rider Brain Vandborg aren't going so well, as he was insulted by my opening offer. I will revisit this later after I see him race some more. However, he is a young rider with a fair amount of talent. We would love to have him in the fold next year and beyond.

The riders not under contract for next season are:

Tomas Vaitkus, Pavel Pardnos, George Hincappie, Levi Leipheimer, Antonio Cruz , Jason McCartney, David Latasa, Jose Luis Rubieria, David Blanco, Brian Vandborg, Stijn Devolder (a high priority), and Gianni Meersman.

So...I will be keeping on eye on all of these riders, to see if they have a future with team Discovery.

Don't worry about Vandborg, he's overrated (who said I was biased Pfft).

Instead, try and get Niki Østergaard, who's a great puncheur prospect. I don't think Discovery posses too many of his kind.

Swiss rider Johann Tschopp of Bouygues Telecom is leading the Tour of Malaysia by +8 seconds over Sandy Casar of Francaise Des Jeux after 3 stages.

Tomorrow I will be posting startlist and preview of Discovery's next race: GP de Marseille.

GP de Marseille Preview

Ahhh...the beginning of the European season is here! We originally were not invited to the race, but requested and received an invitation. We wanted to fill out the February calender a little, as we have 30 riders to keep happy and get in race shape. Its also cool to be at the first race of the season on the European Continent. Vladimir Gusev and Tomas Vaitkus are amongst the pre-race favorites. While we haven't necessarily targeted this race on the schedule, we will certainly try hard for a podium result.

As you might expect there are alot of French based teams here. (8 of the 18 registered teams) There are also quite a few Frenchman who have a chance to kick off the season with a victory on their home turf. A couple of them are:

Gran Prix de Marseille

Allauch-Aubagne-127.1 km.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseilleProlouge.jpg
Vladimir Gusev will try and make an attack on one of the last hilly sections if he is in form. There is a downhill descent to the finish...so if a mass sprint is in the works, we will get Tomas Vaitkus up front before the last little hill. We will try and get a rider or two in a breakaway (you never know), probably Uros Murn or Jason McCartney who are both getting close to peak form. I figure I have 3 ways to try and win the race...so we'll see.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille2.jpg
The peleton begins the first hilly descent.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille3.jpg
At 114 km. out there is a breakaway with a 1:30 lead. It includes Yann Puvois of Bretons, Juan Miguel Mercado of Agritubel, Yannick Talabardon of Credit Agricole, Arnaud Gerard of FDJuex, and Peter Jecobs of Unibotte. Alot of Frenchman taking there shot early.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseilles.jpg
At 108 km., Uros Murn is turned loose to join the break.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMerseille.jpg
When Murn joins breakaway, they have a slim 2 minute advantage.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille7.jpg
Murn is strong today on the hills.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille.jpg
99 km out, there is a second breakaway.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille8.jpg
Nico Sejmens and Jason McCartney pace the peleton.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille9.jpg
Uros Murn opens a 1 minute gap on the lead breakaway group with 70 km. to go.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille10.jpg
They have a 1 minute advantage over...

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille11.jpg
Olivier Bonnaire of Bouygues, Steffen Weigold of Tinkoff and Freddy Bichot of Agritubel who have a 30 second advantage over...

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille12.jpg
Mickael Delage of FDJeux, who has 3:45 advantage over the peleton. Gonna be a fun finish.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille13.jpg
Agritubel controls the pace of the peleton, with two of their riders in breakaways. Murn is now 5 minutes ahead with 54 km. to go.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille14.jpg
A few km later the peleton begins to wake up.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille15.jpg
As the main group catches the 2nd breakaway, an attack is launched, led by Erwin Thojs of Unibotte.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille16.jpg
15 km. to the finish, Thojs passes Murn, as the peleton looms in the distance.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille17.jpg
All together now with 11 km to go, the peleton sees Italian Andrea Moletta of Gerolsteiner launch an attack on the last uphill section.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille18.jpg
Going down the descent to the finish, Moletta has a 45 second advantage...and 4 km. to go. This is gonna be a close one!

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseille19.jpg
Tomas Vaitkus moves to the front for the sprint.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPmarseile20.jpg
Less than a km to go...looks like it is going to be Moletta's day.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille205.jpg
It is! A strong attack wins the race.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/GPMarseille21.jpg
Discovery's Tomas Vaitkus takes the sprint ahead of Markus Zberg and Lloyd Mondry. Nice day for Gerolsteiner with 2 podium spots. The French are shut out at home.

A very good result, as Vaitkus is far from being in peak form. The Discovery sprinter's have really been earning their paychecks.Smile Two riders in the Top 10...yeah I'll take that.

I actually tried to attack Gusev with about 30 km to go...he didn't have it.

I executed all 3 of my strategies for winning the race...got a podium.

Strong rides by Antonio Cruz and Voldomir Bileka, two guys who we need as domestiques for the Classics.

The squad is performing better than expected...being a factor in every race. It's early...and the competition and courses have been fairly weak...but Discovery is primed for a great season.

The Tour of Malaysia is through 7 stages, and is still led by Johann Tschopp. Paride Grillo of Ceramica Panaria-Navigare has won 3 stages, but is well back in the General Classification.

Lloyd Mondry of AG2R leads the GP de Besseges afer 2 stages. He has a slim 4 second advantage over Jimmy Cesper of Unibotte and Robbie McEwen of Predictor-Lotto.

Volta Ciclista a Mallorca Preview

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/VueltaCiclistaaMallorca.jpg

Again...not a race we have highlighted on the calender. We are sending our B team to the race, as the heavy hitters on Discovery will be racing the California Road instead. Four riders will be making their season debuts in this 5 day tour. Benjamin Noval, Jose Luis Rubiera, Sergio Paulinho, and Janez Brajkovic. We are going to try and set up Tomas Vaitkus for the first short, flat stage...and take it from there. This is the first race where we will see some decent sized climbs.

Vuelta ciclista a Mallorca

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/VueltaCiclistaaMallorca.jpg

Stage 1: Palma-Palma-84 km.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca1-5.jpg
A short flat circuit race. This one is for the sprinter's. I'll try and get a result from Vaitkus, who sprinted well his first time out.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Mallorca1-2.jpg
4 riders attack 10 km into the race. Nacor Burgos of Relax-GAM, Fransisco Lara Ruiz of Andalucia, Luis Fernandez Oliveria of Karpin, and Stefan Cohnen of Freenet.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/mallorca1-3.jpg
The peleton crept along the first half of the race.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Mallorca1-4.jpg
50 km. out the breakaway is now 6. Adrian Palomares of F-Canarias and the dangerous Nicolas Portal of Caisse D'Epargne have joined the fun. They have a 3 minute advantage.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca1-6.jpg
But this day is reserved for sprinting. Bernhard Eisel, Gert Steegmans, Samuel G Sanchez, and Riccardo Ricco are all up front. Vaitkus didn't have good legs today.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca1-1.jpg
It's Eisel's day! He was much stronger than everyone else. There really was no doubt. Leon Van Bon of Rabobank has a nice result in second.

Not suprisingly, all the breakaway riders were unable to finish with the main group. Jose Luis Ruberio fell of the pace today as well. He is clearly in poor shape, and can't be counted on for help in the mountains.

Some congratulations are in order for a pair of French riders, who closed out victories today.

Jerome Pineau of Bouygues Telecom won the 5 day tour GP de Besseges by a 43 second margin over teammate Thomas Voeckler. That won't be the last time you see the name Voeckler, I suspect. Nice race for Bouygues who have been strong early this season. Staf Scheirlinckx of Cofidis was third.

At the Tour of Mayalsia, Sandy Casar of Francaise DeJeux was victorious after the 10 day race. His margin of victory was +35 seconds over Evgueni Petrov of Tinkoff. Waladimir Billi of Sarramenti finished 3rd, 56 seconds back. Paride Grillo dominated the sprints, winning 5 stages, and the green jersey by nearly 50 points. The future looks bright for the young Italian sprinter.

Vuelta ciclista a Mallorca

Stage 2: Port d' Alcudia-Port d' Alcudia-163.5 km.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Mallorca2-1.jpg
Another flat stage for the sprinters...but this one twice as long. Vaitkus didn't look good yesterday, but remains our best shot at a stage win. I'll save Gusev for Stage 3 and 4, where he may be able to make a move.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca2-2.jpg
Today's suicide attack comes at 153 km out, courtesy of Michael Schar of Kazakstana. Rodrigo Garcia Rena of Fuerteventura is up for the challenge.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-3.jpg
A few km. later, Gustavo Cesar Veloso of Karpin and Agritubel's Manuel Calvente Gorbas take off the front. Alot of Spainard's looking to put on a show for their countrymen.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-4.jpg
T-Mobile was up front early, keeping an eye on this race for Tour Leader Eisel.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-5.jpg
110 km from the finish, the breakaway would have its largest advantage...over 7 minutes. Calvente Gorbas rode solo 1 minute behind.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-6.jpg
T-Mobile, Rabobank, and Gerolsteiner were all teams interested in reeling in the escapees.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malooroca2-7.jpg
Discovery sends Steven Cummings and Janez Brajkovic to the front, to help pace the chase.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-8.jpg
We are on level terms, 29 km from the finish. The sprinter's begin moving up front.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-85.jpg
The Tour Leader sits on Euskaltel's Koldo Fernandez's wheel, as Discovery's Vatkius is shadowed by Gert Steegman's of Quickstep.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-9.jpg
3.5 km from the line, Steegman's is nestled well behind Vaitkus, as yesterday's runner-up , green clad Leon Von Bon follows the wheel of teammate Pedro Horrillo.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-10.jpg
As Fernandez begins to acclerate...Eisel Makes his move. Von Bon gets a nice leadout form Horrillo...Vaitkus is again not going to be a factor. Robert Forster of Gerolsteiner and Mikel Gaztanaga Echevarria of Agritubel are well placed too.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malorroca2-11.jpg
Fernandez prevails over Eisel. Another few meters...maybe Eisel gets his 2nd straight win. Forster finishes a strong 3rd.

Meh...Vaitkus is far from being in peak form, but he just doesn't have that second gear like Davis. He also was too far up front early, and really doesn't have a teammate capable of leading out for him here in Spain. The team did a good job getting Gusev and Vaitkus to the finish well rested, but Jose Luis Ruberia was again unable to keep pace at the end of the race.

Why didnt you try to follow an other rider in the sprint? Youll never win anything by sprinting with no lead out whatsoever.

I was trying to. The end of this race was really buggy...I couldn't get my cursor where I wanted. Point well taken though...I still need to work on sprinting quite a bit.

Vuelta ciclista a Mallorca

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/VueltaCiclistaaMallorca.jpg

Stage 3: Pollenca-Pollenca-166.0 km.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Mallorca3-1-1.jpg
This stage features the first decent sized climb most rider's have seen this young season. An uphill finish should make things intriguing. Discovery's goal: Try and find a way to shake Gusev loose...but only if he is looking good on first climb.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-2.jpg
Not wasting any time, 4 km in, Fransisco J Lara Ruiz of Andalucia gets things started with an attack.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-3.jpg
Rider's continue to fly off the front, but a lead group forms. Joining Lara Ruiz are: Isidro Nozal of Karpin, Marcus Burghardt of T-Mobile, and Dmitriy Moravyev of Kazaksana.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-4.jpg
Two riders ride 40 seconds behind. Gerben Lowik of Rabobank and J M Elias Galindo of Relax.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-5.jpg
As Moravyev takes the first sprint, his breakaway group has a 7 minute advantage.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Maloroca3-6.jpg
As the first climb begins, Discovery's Egoi Martinez is feeling well, and tries to put some daylight between him and the peleton.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-7.jpg
Meanwhile, Moravyev feels like some riders aren't carrying their weight. The breakaway looks disorganized.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-8.jpg
The peleton catches Martinez at the start of the final, steeper and longer climb.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-9.jpg
3 Km from the summit, the main group swallows up Lowik and Elias Galindo.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca-3-10.jpg
Many attacks and counter-attacks were attempted in the last 3 km of climb...all to no avail. This is Joaquin Rodriquez Oliver of C Epargne, with the very dangerous young puncheur Steffan Schumacher countering.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-11.jpg
The C Eparagne team set a blistering pace the last 30 km, with the last remaining breakaway group a distant memory.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-12.jpg
Beginning the last short climb to the finish, Vladimir Gusev and Steven Cummings try and get Vaitkus into position...if that is even possible, as Iv'e yet to see how Vaitkus performs in uphill sprints.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-13.jpg
Less than a km later, Vaitkus has already dropped back, clearly tired from the days climbs. Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez of Euskaltel begins to accelerate on the left side.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-14.jpg
Around the final turn, Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez looks primed for a stage victory. Talk about a stage tailor made for his talents.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca3-15.jpg
Yeah...he just blows away the field. Uphill finishes are Sanchez Gonzalez's bread and butter.

I was honestly just trying to see how Vaitkus and Gusev would handle their first serious climbing of the year. They both finished at the front...really more than I was expecting. Gusev looked especially strong today. I may try something with him tomorrow.

Gusev is getting fitter by the day, but I've seen enough from him to know that he isn't quite ready yet to hang with the big boys as a climber. I still may try and attack with him in the last 1/3 of the race today, depending on his form. I will also have a representative in any early breakaway. Gusev can finish in the Top 10 in this race...and that is now my clear cut goal.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-2.jpg
As we have seen all tour...it doesn't take long for the action to start. T-Mobile's Frantisek Rabon attacks first today.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-3.jpg
A 10 man breakaway group is eventually formed, representing 10 different teams. Discovery's Sergio Paulinho is there, and for the second straight day, J M Elias Galindo of Relax is in the lead group. Rider's from Karpin, T-Mobile, Kazakstana, F Canarias, Freenet, C Epargne and Rabobank are flying their team's colors. The most dangerous rider in the group is Saunier Duval's David Canada. Conspicuously absent is Euskaltel, the team of yellow clad leader Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez. This breakaway might as well have a huge target on its back, as you can be sure that they won't let this group get too far out of sight.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-4.jpg
As Discovery Channel's Paulinho takes the first mountain sprint by a hair...the breakaway has a 5:30 minute lead over the peleton, with just over 94 km. to go.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-5.jpg
As expected, Euskaltel riders are up front, calling the shots right now for the main group.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-6.jpg
Several rider's attempted to attack at various stages of the long slow climb to the second mountain sprint...all to no avail. Vladimir Gusev took a shot 41 km. out.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-7.jpg
23 Km from the finish, Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez launches an attack, as the breakaway group is caught.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-8.jpg
With only the final fast descent and 16 km between them and the finish line, a very dangerous group of riders has formed a 5 man group. Tour leader Sanchez Gonzalez is joined by Luis Leon Sanchez of Caisse d'Epargne, Luis Perez Rodriguez of Andalucia, Juan Jose Cobo Acebo of Saunier Duval, and David Bernabau of F Canarias. All serious GC Contenders. Five Spanish riders putting on a show for their countrymen. This breakaway is no joke. (Rodriguez Oliver...seen in screen shot could not hang on in descent)

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-9.jpg
Poor David Canada, the only holdover from the first breakaway group...he is caught 2.5 km from a victory. 54 seconds is the advanatage for the breakaway group.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-10.jpg
As the sprint begins, 2.5 km out...Sanchez Gonzalez is on Bernabau's wheel.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-11.jpg
Going around the final turn...Luis Leon Sanchez takes the inside corner...while Sanchez Gonzalez makes his move on the outside.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-12.jpg
That's gonna be a wrap folks! Sanchez Gonzalez blasts toward the finish line.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-13.jpg
A little fist pump before he hits the line...Sanchez Gonzalez has reason to be happy. He has won his second consecutive stage, and extended his lead in the General Classification.

i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff185/terpripken/Malloroca4-14.jpg
The day is not all bad for Discovery...Vladimir Gusev and Tomas Vatkius are 1-2 in the main sprint. Gusev beats Vaitkus...proving that Vaitkus is both out of form and tired after the climbs.

I was kicking myself after this race for attacking Gusev too early. Had I waited...he would have been able to get in the winning breakaway...and likely gotten a podium. No way he would have beaten Sanchez Gonzalez in a sprint...but a 2nd would have been nice. As it was, he was out of gas when he needed to counter-attack. Oh well! Live and learn. (I told you I would mess up some races tactically) Steven Cummings and Egoi Martinez are looking very strong lately. Janez Brajkovic and Jose Luis Ruberio just needed a few climbs to get back in their element after disappointing starts to the tour.
