sherbeast - i would really appreciate your contribution but you need to learn how to post youtube videos. I told you that on a private message and there are topics on the forum about that.
This one is dedicated to Lance Armstrong and Danilo Di Luca:
1997 was the year of Ok Computer, Urban Hymns, Fat of the land, Nimrod or Woo Tang Forever, but Metal also brought us some very good albums.
Incubus, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
Despite this is not a (self) considered metal album, they were opening to Korn at the time and they had pretty heavy shits back there. The album that made the word "procrastinate" enter many people vocabulary.
New skin
Deftones, Around the fur
After "Adrenaline" had great success Deftones launched their second album. "Be quiet and drive" is the most known song, but i'm still in love for this one.
Lotion
From another country in north america came a great album from an almost unknown band with my age.
Voivod, Phobos
Here is the song that entitle the album.
Metallica, Reloaded
After changing physically and musically with "Load" album, Metallica showed us another set of their new inspiration.
And the memory remains
Entombed, To Ride, Shoot Straight And Speak The Truth
The swedish band, pioneers of death'n'roll gave us another great album.
Lights out
But the best albuns came from another nordic country...Norway. Avant-garde metal had a great year with 3 great albums from 3 great bands. Solefald with "The Linear Scaffold", In The Woods... with the album "Omnio" and Arcturus with their masterpiece "La Masquerade Infernale". One of my favorite albums ever with a song is based on one of my favorite writers (Edgar Allan Poe). Here it is.
Arcturus, La Masquerade Infernale
Alone
To end with some heavy like shit thing, 1997 was also the year Emperor gave Black Metal fans one of their favorites in "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk".
1998 had Adore from Smashing Pumpkins, Mezzanine from Massive attack, Moon Safari from Air, Hello Nasty from The Beastie Boys, Without you i'm nothing from Placebo, the self-titled debut album from Queens of a Stone Age or Jeff Buckley's Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk.
But Metal also had great albums with one of my favorite bands showing their first work.
The Haunted, The Haunted
This is not a worldwide band and many people don't know them, but on their debut album they completely kicked asses. Formed in Sweden but with danish and finish members.
Chasm
Fear Factory, Obsolete
This album changed many people's lives and this is one of those huge bands that any metal fan would like to see live.
Ressurection
Sepultura, Against
After Max Cavalera left Sepultura the american Derrick Green was the selected vocalist for this great band.
Choke
Medulla Nocte, A Conversation alone
This Ross-on-Wye band ended in 2002 but their songs had this energy...
A Conversation alone
Meshuggah, Chaosphere
This band amazed and continues to amazing with their musical talent. Here is the real band performing a air metal show of one of their 1998 songs.
New Millenium Cyanide Christ
Anathema, Alternative 4
This band has changed so much but still can figure between the heaviest metal festivals despite they're completely different. This album has what we can call a hymn and still is played by them.
Fragile Dreams
Opeth, My arms, your hearse
All Opeth albums got great songs including this one. Despite it is not one of my favorites their talent is clear again. This one was chosen by my wife.
Demon of a fall
System of a Down , System of a Down
This album really got into many people's ears despite its heaviness. The mixture of eastern european music with what was called Nu Metal, together with political ideas made SOAD triumph. This is still on my playlist.
Great thread, I've been following it and have had a few nice surprises. Missed some years, but hopefully I'm in time for 98. Here are my takes:
Katatonia, Discouraged Ones
One of the many dramatic shifts in sound this band has been through. Still, one of their best albums, in my opinion.
Moonspell, Sin/Pecado
The second trial of this band on getting in a more industrial kind of feeling. Critics obliterated this effort. Me, I find it this hides an handfull of jewels.
Isis, Mosquito Control
Debut of a band that would make history in the sludge scene.
The Gathering, How to measure a planet?
Dutch band preparing themselves for the spacy style they would indulge in later.
abysmo - Welcome! I thought on some of the bands you posted. Isis maybe is my favorite band and i had the privilege to seeing them live on Incrivel Almadense before they broke up.
sherbeast - That's it, you've done it.
Everybody else reading this thread you are welcome to post some videos with some heavy sheets!
Moby had to "Play", the "Red Hot Chilli Peppers got "Californication" on the menu, Muse started to have "Showbiz", Incubus started to "Make yourself", the Foo Fighter stated that "There is nothing left to lose" and Porcupine Tree had a "Stupid Dream" on the same year that Sigur Ros demonstrated the dreams soundtrack on "Agaetis Byrjun".
But in Metal we (the Humanity) also saw a lot of inspiration!
From USA i show you 2 bands that most people don't know and a few remember because they both ended in 2002.
Botch, We are the Romans
Man the Ramparts
Spirit Caravan, Jug Fulla Sun
Dead Love
Babylon whores, King Fear
Another band that inspired what was to come. This one from Finland, some people called it Death'n'Roll.
Song for the Damned
Anathema, Judgement
The british band didn't took too much time to release a new album with their new style. Leaving the Doom Metal behind they kept the spirit but changed their chords.
The turn of the century got people crazy about the end of the world what inspired many people to risk new things. The "information era" with people able to copy cd's brought Metal to a lot of new listeners. Dvd's started soon showing personal sides from the bands and connecting music makers and listeners.
With Soulfly, System of A Down and Korn on a lot of people Disk-mans and stereos Slipknot touched the extreme of Metal and were welcomed by the heavier music fans and got the young people forgetting about pop and leaving grunge behind on their playlists.
Slipknot, Slipknot
The american dream arrived to these 9 guys who left Iowa to go to California to record their first album with Roadrunner Records. "Wait and bleed" was on the radio and everybody knew the chorus of it. "Spit it out" basically mixed fast rhymes with heavy guitar riffs and a lot of rhythm. It much explains Nu Metal. But i prefer one of the same kind but harder...
Only one
Static X, Wisconsin death trip
Electronic music got to Nu Metal as well with Static X. Their debut album titles a thread on our forum.
The Dillinger Escape Plan, Calculating Infinity
Also from USA came a band that surprised a lot of metal fans. Instead of the typical long hair, dark clothes, and satanic figures, TDEP offered us a completely different kind of heavy music. Mathematics and such an heavy hard core mixed with some more commercial (usually 1 per album) songs made them play all over the world. I saw them opening for System of a Down and everybody was just like woooww!
In Flames, Colony
Somewhere in Sweden In Flames were much more ordinary on their 4th album.
Ordinary Story
Arch Enemy, Burning Bridges
The last album from this swedish band fronted by Johan Liiva before they decided to have a woman on the voice.
Merciful Fate, 9
The last album from King Diamond on this great band. Nothing better then remembering them live.
Neurosis, Times of Grace
The start of Post-Metal is given to these guys. They are masters but for me is hard as hell to get it in. Maybe it's like Opera or Fado, only with the coming of age it will sound perfect.
The year 2000 marked everyone who lived it as a special year for the myths associated to the end of the world and the turning of century (despite the discussion on when was the turn of the century).
The 12th album of Iron Maiden made their return with several new things including people. With the title based on Aldous Huxley romance they still glued a lot of people to their concerts.
Iron Maiden, Heavy Metal, Brave New World
Brave New World
Also from UK a band that most never eared of. Later people tried to do this.
Warning, Doom Metal, The strength to Dream
How can it happen
Because Nu Metal placed Metal on the most sold albums list there were a lot of new bands from this genre, specially in the states.
Spineshank, Nu Metal, The Height of Callousness
At the time any nu metal band recorded an album and a video music!
Synthetic
Deftones, Progressive/Nu Metal, White Poney
I was one of the ones who went running to buy the new Deftones album after Adrenaline and Around the Fur. It took me years to understand it and consider it one of my favorite albums.
Korea
Mudvayne, Nu Metal, LD50
Although pretty commercial with their painted faces, Mudvayne wrote about Nietsche, had a great bass and were not common among the metal lovers.
Severed
Gojira, Progressive Metal, Terra Incognita
From France came one of the greatest albums i've ever heard. This song really got me into them. Specially if you know some lawyer who you can sing this to.
Satan is a Lawyer
Electric Wizard, Doom/ Sludge Metal, Dopethrone
A fan video about this great band!
I, the witchfinder
Nile, The black seeds of Vengeance
To end up with a really heavy shit, Nile was kicking asses in 2000!
All the metal lovers and all the metal haters and all the ones that don't give a penny about metal music should check the video ""Metal - A Headbangers journey" on the first post.

Everybody was kind of sad and missing this thread to know what was on the metal music in 2001. No?? Deal with some metal music from 2001!!!
On the year that "Amelie" got everybody listening to Yann Tiersen, The Strokes thought that "Is this it". Radiohead got "Amnesiac" and Muse saw the "Origin of the Symmetry" while Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds knew that "No more shall we part".
My Dying Bride, "The Dreadful Hours"
Unfortunately you'll have to put your sound at the top of whatever it can get and deal with about 4 minutes before starting to listen seriously to this great brittish band. The first song of a great album of one of the best bands on the gothic style.
The dreadful hours
System of A Down, "Toxicity"
The armenian guys in america got their 2nd album on 2001. And this song was sang over and over.
Chop Suey
Slipknot, "Iowa"
After a debut album that got everyone looking at them, Slipknot tribute the state were they came from. The result was aggressive music worldwide.
Gently
Opeth, "Blackwater Park"
Another great deliver from this huge band. Their performances live are everything a fan can hope for.
The leper affinity
Converge, Jane Doe
The start of a great project that got everyone's attention and earned everyone's respect. They look like kids playing hardcore, and they are, but also great musicians!
Hell to Pay
Tool, Lateralus
The most complex album from this great band is my favorite ever. Some people have tried to understand it using maths. Like on this video clip from a song i posted earlier on this thread and that titles the album.
F(n)=F(n-1)+F(n-2)
Lateralus
Emperor, Prometheus, the discipline of fire and demise
Emperor was one of the best bands playing Black Metal at the beginning of the 21st century. They ended up with this album but they have actually returned. Prometheus, wasn't the favorite from the fans and here is a live performance that shows it.

My favorite band from those i just posted is clearly Opeth. I believe this swedish band is clearly underrated. They are great musicians, play with their hearts and make things most band don't even tried. But that's me who like metal and see them as just a group of musicians travelling around the world doing what they like and making everybody who sees them live happy!
Nice variation of metal music you're sharing here. Disagree that Opeth is underrated though, as they have become a very successful metal band and their reviews are usually full of praise. Personally, I believe their best days are behind them (Blackwater Park!), even though I would definitely go see them again if they come to Istanbul.
My current favourites include Deafheaven, Moonspell, Norma Jean, Long Distance Calling, Anathema, Hacride and Lacrimas Profundere. Maybe I'll share some videos someday. And unlike many metalheads and even non-metalheads, I have never, ever liked Metallica.

2002 was the year were Wilco got their "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". Coldplay got a "A Rush of Blood to the Head", Audioslave without Zack de La Rocha got Audioslave, and this is while Johny Cash still was the "The Man (who) comes Around".
A great band arised that year. Not really Metal i guess, but they rocked things at the time.
Queens of the Stone AgeSongs for the Deaf
A song for the dead
The year also welcomened another freaking great band! Mastodon!!
MastodonRemission
March of the Fire Ants
Meshuggah
Meshuggah has become known for their innovative musical style, complex, polymetered song structures and polyrhythms. 10 ring guitars and a fucking feeling need to feel.
Nothing
Stengah
Opeth
The swedish band was considered done, But still...
Deliverance
Masters Apprentices
The Dillinger Escape Plan Featuring Mike Patton
After Calculating Infinity, The DEP got their name among metal listeners. Without a vocalist, The Dillinger Escape Plan began a nationwide search for a replacement via their website, releasing an instrumental version of "43 % Burnt" from Calculating Infinity and inviting prospective vocalists to record and submit their own vocal tracks.
The guy from Faith No More,
Irony is a Dead Scene
PS: Please don't give up of this this thread thread because of this last song
A great year in 2003 with the White Stripes introducing themselves with "Elephant", The Strokes getting their second album, Radiohead came back with "Hail to the theaf", Muse got their "Absolution" and the Perfect Circle got their "Thirteenth Step".
This blonde girl just kicks asses singing live:
Arch EnemyAnthems of Rebellion
We will rise
This one goes out to the people playing the PCM Daily on line league. And why do i like Metal |..|
Spoiler
Hear me now
Bearing down
Upon a path we choose
Chosen from the start
Living different rules
Existence
Something to cherish true
Will not succumb to doubts
That I hold onto
Release the fear of my
Pain
In so much pain
Give me the will to fight
Every obstacle that I have inside
Release the fear and
Hear me now
Words I vow
No fucking regrets
Fuck these chains
No god damn slave
I will be different
I'll stand here defiantly
My middle finger raised
Fuck your prejudice
All my life
Always I've felt alone
Conditioned to believe
That I'm always wrong
Only truth
Will help to set me free
My every weakness
I must turn into strength
Every rage, every tear
Hate
In so much hate
Never that pain will bind me
Ask of myself if I've the will to unwind
Every rage and tear
Hear me now
Words I vow
No fucking regrets
Fuck these chains
No god damn slave
I will be different
I'll stand here defiantly
My middle finger raised
Fuck your prejudice
Carved upon my stone
I will go on
Patience, belief
Love will ascend
Just listen to it
Voice so true, inside calling
To stand you up and march you on
Keep from falling
Let go your sorrow
Sun will shine, this I promise
Rising tomorrow
Rising
Hear me now
I'm taking back the control
Of my
Life from societies hold
I vow
No more will I be a slave
Rise to
Challenge the whole human race
My spirit you cannot break
Machine Head Through the ashes of empires

A quite unknown band from Italy got a great piece of art with this progressive, avant-guarde metal album.
Ephel Duath, The painter's palette
The passage
This great album from a great British band was presented to me by Need for Speed!
Killing Joke. Killing Joke
Death and Ressurection
And another great british band had the metal album of the year. Akercocke!!
