The Hammarling's - On Break (Exams)
TheManxMissile
Mikel Hammarling

Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux - Stage 1
Chateaux d'Estaimbourg - Quevaucamps

Ok, first race. First time i had to look at the startlist this morning, and it only made me smile. Its a very small field, of only 46 riders. That doesn't make life that much easier at it puts more emphasis on the team. Our main rivals will be Itera-Katusha who have a good team of 8.

179km to go
Race underway, lets make sure we stay near the front. Dont want to get caught out by those cobbles

143km
Ok double attack, its JVC and VBG. Clarke prepare to chase anyone else, want to keep it at 2 men

126km
Vandromme wins the KoM ahead of Brandle. Gap is fine, and growing

113km
Break looks even as Brandle has hit back at KoM 2. Gap is 6'30, prepare to start slow chase

103km
Vandromme ontop at KoM3. Clarke begin slow chase.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0001_zpsdb3c99be.jpg

91km
Vandromme KoM4. Gap 5'20 good distance. Splits forming on cobbles, keep up pace see who drops

88km
Vandromme again KoM5. Definite split, only 13ish gone. No big names. Keep working, gap 4'45

73km
Vandromme IS1. Keep working, things in hand. When on cobbles stop chase take rest.

44km
Vandromme IS2. Gap 2'30. Clarke your perfect.

22km
Vandromme IS3. Gap 1'40. Mindset sprint, ok? Luke you good? Nice to hear.

15km
Gap 35". Itera taking over, no resistance. Start forming line.

3km
Falling back, Williams need to kick up front!

1000m
Rowe! Punch now, Itera has advantage!

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0002_zps088dc63d.jpg

FINISH
So close, another 100m would have done it... We need to wait to push, went too early and swamped. Nice sprint though. Well done, good start.

Frankly thats a disappointing result. Luke is the best sprinter here by some distance. We hit the front far too early and got swamped with 3k to go. His sprint was fantastic, but that Russian kid is pretty fast as well. Still got 3 stages to go though, so things are still ok overall.

Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux - Stage 2
Mont de l'Enclus

Ok, a short 9.3km time trial. I would say that Kwiatkowski is favorite, but i know he is not packing much form, so we'll see what happens. And he is the only rider i am able to follow today, with the others relying on neutral support.

9.3km
GOGOGO!!

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0004_zpsf1324313.jpg

5km
Check, down by 5". Raise pace

2km
Hit these low slopes hard! Time to be made here.

FINISH
I can see you blew in the final 500m. Thats fine, its a tough course today. Decent time, 2nd place +3" provisional.

Comment
Again its hard to be disappointed. Michal did well to get 2nd, and perhaps should have won with some better pacing. The rest of the team did what was expected and should have saved some energy for the final 2 stages. Livshits looks like the guy to beat, and it could be tough if Itera stay organized.

"Return to the Homeland"

Well i'm back. Had a nice bit of a break since the Alentejo. Sorry i didn't write anything then, but it was just a form builder and not a lot else had happened.

But with the start of the UK races, and the opening round of the Premier Calendar, i had to write something. This is the first big race for Node4. Last season Lavery rode to 2nd in a great race. I remember this race well. I had to put some huge turns on the front in the finale to bring it back to a sprint. I couldnt move for days afterwards!

It is a tough route, with lots of dirt roads and cobbles to sap the strength from your legs. But to counter that we have a good team. Lavery will return and hope to go one better. Thwaites, Barker, Bialoblicki, Rogers, Sampson and Davis are the full team. Its a good team, and i hope we can get a top result and kick start the UK season.

I don't really have anything else to say. Life still good overall, especially sharing a flat with Phil. Certainly is fun! If we get a good result tomorrow, then when the team gets back in from Belgium we will be out in London for a party.
So until then

Karl

Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux - Stage 3
Mont de l'Enclus - Vieux Conde

An 85km dash today. We are going with a change of tactics. Itera have the numbers and form advantage so we can't just sit back and then sprint. So a lot more aggressive today and try and force Itera to work more, put them on back foot.

84km
Lets not attack too early guys, stay near the front, quick KoM

81km
Andy, you got that. Luke in 2nd, so well done.

69km
Luke go take it out! Well done, easy points.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0005_zps7baf3b43.jpg

63km
Roelandts(JVC) broke for that KoM, no issues.

60km
Go Clarke! Attack now, small rise coming up to aid. Roelandts(JVC) countering, thats good.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0006_zpsb4bee733.jpg

58km
Naturally you were fist over that climb Clarke. Advantage growing, keep pulling.

36km
Wow that was a great fight for the climb! Perfectly timed in the end Clarke, congrats for that!

29km
Let Roelandts take the sprint, save energy to keep pulling. Need to force Itera to push harder.

15km
Gaps 35", time to sit up Clarke. Luke get them set up how you want. Don't, DONT, move up yet.

13km
Right thats the catch! Time to move forwards, but don't take the front yet.

5km
Punch it now! Tight turns in final few k's, want to be ahead if posible. Itera and VGB pushing as well, its gonna be tight, just stay upright!

1000m
Luke go! Flamina fading, Ladin coming strong, this is gonna be close!

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0007_zpse81eaedf.jpg

500m
Luke, second kick!! PUSH PUSH PUSH!!!! You're coming, coming, closer closer!

FINISH
Motherf***er! Damn that was close! 2 more meters, 2 more meters... Christ... Good race boys, you did everything right guys, but sometimes its just not supposed to happen. Heads up there is still one more chance.

This is a tough race. Itera and Ladin are on fire. The guys rode a great stage today. Clarke force Itera into working, perfect. The rest came to the front a tad too late and got a bit caught in the tight turns at the end. Then Luke missed out by the smallest of margins. But i feel good about tomorrow!

Team: Lavery and Thwaites as joint leaders. Who ever feels better at the time will take control. Bialoblocki, Hammarling, Barker, Sampson, Rogers and Davis round out a full team

162km to go - Hagman(JBC), Andersson(VPC) and Pereira(PRT) are the first attackers

157km - Its all together. There is a flurry more attacks but none create any sort of gap

145km - Sampson makes a move, and is aided by Bulik(BGZ) and Boily(AMO)
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0009_zps780bab28.jpg

132km - That trio is pulled in. And instantly Holmes(RAL), Winter(ARH), Pfingsten(RIJ) and Davis jump away. Quickly they build an 2'00 advantage, thanks to the cobbles.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0010_zps77f7292a.jpg

35km - Trussov(RIJ) is the first of the favorites to suffer problems. He fall hard at the head of the race, but everyone threads around him.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0011_zps1536800f.jpg

22km - Winter and Davis return to the peloton. Pfingsten is solo by 43" over Homes, and the Peloton is a further 41" back.

20km - Holmes is swallowed up. Pfingsten has only 33" to go

16km - Hammarling attacks, just as Pfingsten is caught.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0012_zps52ca7c5a.jpg

14km - But it doesn't stick, and Hammarling returns to work for the sprint

13km - Until Lavery goes, and goes hard! He grabs 30" over the dirt roads and pushes onwards!
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0013_zps77e1ecf2.jpg

6km - Klostergaard(VPC) attacks now. He may just have time to catch Lavery

1000m - Klostergaard catches Lavery under the 1km Kite! But both men are fading fast.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0014_zps0ee86c7e.jpg

FINISH - Klostergaard just manages to get past and win by a few lengths. Lavery claims second for the second year in a row! Zaballa wins a close sprint behind. Most riders are given Klostergaards time but they were easily spread out over 5-6km!

Comment
I've just watched the finale back! Man it was close! Phil and Kloster were level with 500m to go, but he couldn't find that extra energy... I was happy with my dig at the end. It put the peloton under pressure and provided a perfect situation for Phil to launch. I even managed to pilot the sprint train until 5km as well! Very very happy with my performance today, and its an improvement on 2012! While we were painfully close for a 2nd year, there are clearly a lot of positives to take from today.

Ok, final stage of the race. Aggressive isn't quite enough, so today we are going to throw everything at this race, and i mean everything! There are two hills in the final 25km and we are going to wreck this race on them. Either we win, or we don't finish!

159km
Ok lads. Lets do this. Stay near the front. Clarke, keep any eye out.

143km
Thats enough of a wait, Clarke you can go now! No-one even looking to follow, its going to be a long day im afraid.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0016_zps683de746.jpg

100km
Clarke your gap is 8'30, but VGB and OPT are starting to hold it there. On the plus side you have just secured the KoM Jersey, well done!

77km
Andy! How did you fall going up hill! Do you want stabilizers? Just try and survive the stage now.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0017_zps3029410c.jpg

25km
Gap is 2'06. Pete, lets turn it on full!

23km
Michal and Luke, time to move! The peloton is in disarray nicely done. Keep that pace high as possible! You've got 25" already.

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0018_zpsbcde62d7.jpg

20km
Clarke, i need to you to pull these two 5000% for as long as possible! Keep diggin, keep digging, keep digging... aaaannnnddd..... GOGOGO!

9km
GOGOGOGOGO MICHAL!!!! PUSH PUSH PUSH PUSH!!!! 12" to Luke, and then 35" more to peloton!!!

i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0019_zps788a34eb.jpg

5km
Luke is back in pack. You have 40"!! Head down and drive it on!

3km
You're doing it! You're doing it! Itera down to 1!! You're doing it!!!

1000m
27" and falling fast. The sprint is on behind, but you have got this sealed! Head down, we need that gap!!!!

FINISH

Comment
After about 6hours i've finally got some time to write.... Those hours have been spent arguing with the race officials, contacting Malcolm, Itera's management and some people at the UCI.
I am extremely angry about the time gaps awarded, or in this case not awarded, at the finish. Michal did not get a gap given, yet with 200m to go it was registering 20" on the official screens. In a race that has come down to less than one second this is disgrace!
We rode a perfect stage, putting Itera on the backfoot from the 143km attack by Clarke. We shed all but 3 of them on the cobbled climbs. We reduced that further with those final attacks. We were perfect! Even Matt was able to just shadow him with ease. We will not let this be taken away from us by unfair rulings.
Whats more the Official results took longer than ever to come out, about 2 hours over the usual! That cannot be right. And without wishing to start anything there are rumors that some Itera management was seen in talking to the Officials in that time...
I will of course keep you updated as we event unfold. I am raging and on a mission to get this sorted. Malcolm is reviewing the tapes of the day at the moment, and will get back to me with his decision. I am pushing to take this to the UCI, and beyond if necessary.

Node4: 12/10 ___ Race officials: 1/10 ___ Itera: -10/10

Yes, was really annoying no gaps were given... But at least we got a stage win. And if you go look at Mikel and Teams Palmares then the race was a huge success.

"Return to former glories"

Its been a week since the Maldon Dengie Tour. And i am feeling nice and recovered from it. Form is starting to build up, my abilities are improving, fitness is high, so things are pretty good for this race.

This race being a grand return to a place i have fond memories for. Tour Doon Hame! Last year i bagged 5th in the GC thanks to bonus seconds collected on stage 2. I would hope i can do the same, but this year with a different team i may not be allowed to attack like that. It all depends on the startlist. Our own team will be a good one, as this is a perfect race for us. There is a fair gap until the Rutland Classic so we won't be in the UK soon, so we have to leave with success behind us.

To get that success the team includes myself, Rowe, Sampson, Cronshaw, Barker, Bialoblocki, Davis and Lavery. A very strong team indeed! Always nice to go racing with Phil and Marcin. They always find away to chat away the hours in the peloton.

I said we would go out partying when the guys got back from Belgium. That was swiftly put on hold after Stage 4, while the management decided what to do. Malcolm took the decision to let the result stand as it was. He was already very happy with what they achieved and didn't think it was worth risking any further issues. Mikel was not happy but he is professional enough to let it go, thankfully. I went to see him yesterday before we left. He had calmed down fortunately. Spent a good few hours chatting, was nice to catch up with my Uncle and not worry about cycling.

Anyway, i should be off the bed so i'm properly rested for the race. See you later.

Team: Rowe, Lavery, Cronshaw, Smapson, Davis, Barker, Bialoblocki, Hammarling

124km to go - Heinrichsen(TRS) is first to attack, along with Niewold(CJP), Hamilton(JBC), Anciaux(WBC), Walker(DPC) and Holmes(RAL). They are all brought back

117km - Creed(OPM), Dron(WBC), Galta(OHR), Heinrichsen(TRS) and Rossetto(BIG) are next to try, but are brought back.

Lots of attacks over the next few k's

98km - KoM 1 at New Galloway goes to Monreal(TRS) ahead of Roosen(CJP) and Baffi(LET). A few k's later Partridge(UKY) and Carthey(RCS) join up to create the BOTD
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0024_zpscc754a03.jpg

75km - IS 1 at Minnigaff goes to Partridge

42km - KoM 2 at Tairlaw Summit goes to Partridge as well

26km - IS 2 at Straiton goes to Monreal

20km - The gap is only 48" to the peloton

15km - All members of the break are finally reeled in

5km - Node4 finally gets to the front, lead by Hammarling. But SKT are very strong and retake the lead heading into the sprint

1000m - Rowe launches, but is behind Eeckhout. Its a fairly open sprint to begin with.

FINISH - But Eeckhout wins by a few lengths. Rowe holds second from a hard charging Havik

Comment
A good first day. I survived the rain, as did the team. Lead-out was good, but SKT's was better. Its that simple. Not a lot to say as it was a quiet day. Happy with my pull near the end. Didn't have to dig too deep for too long. Hopefully that will pay off tomorrow...

177km to go - Attacks straight off from various riders. Node4 pull on the front to keep the race together over the coming k's

163km - And now we see why. Hammarling attacks on the climb! Romero(JSH), McCartey(BPC) and Goesinnen(DPC) follow him a few meters back
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0027_zps463a71de.jpg

151km - Hammarling takes the IS, and the bonus seconds.

136km - Romero takes the second KoM

126km - The leading quartet are joined by Rossetto(BIG)

107km - Jensen(OHR) eventually hauls himself across to the leaders
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0028_zps66854b9b.jpg

102km - Romero takes the third climb, and with it the KoM Jersey

23km - Romero breaks solo through the second IS. Hammarling comes through in second

14km - The main break is caught, except Romero who holds 41"

12km - SKT and TIK waste no time in wiping out Romeros advantage. But as soon as they do Node4 take control!

5km - Node4 are in the zone! They are going so fast there is a split behind them!
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0029_zps05fed2d2.jpg

1000m - The gap has reduced, but all the sprinters are already in full flow. Cronshaw started at 1.2km. Rowe is sticking in his slipstream.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Hammarling/PCM0030_zps770b81ec.jpg

500m - Rowe swings past Cronshaw, as the late sprinters are coming fast!

FINISH - Not that it matters! Node4 finish 1-2!!! With Wippert 3rd.

Well.... Yes.... Party time i think!
Great work by the team to get me away today. Then they really pulled that out of nowhere in the sprint!! That was pure domination! If you'll excuse me for keeping this short, i have to go get drunk and celebrate!

"You get better the second time round"

Right i'm back in action. Karl told me he'd already written the result of the Triptyque fiasco. Malcolm decided it was not worth the risk and effort to challenge the decision. He was very happy with the result we got anyway, which is nice.

As a first race that was a nice introduction. Small, no pressure. I've already learnt fair bit about how to run the race from the team car. The main thing is to start the race with a clear plan, and then be very precise in your instructions over the radio. So i'll take that and try and develop my skills here in Denmark. Its going to be a long race at nearly 200km. But its flat and we are expecting a sprint. So we have Cronshaw, Kwiatkowski, Williams, Barker, Rogers and Hammarling.

Yep Karl. First time i get to work with my nephew in a race situation. It will be great to watch him first hand. Just as long as he behaves himself that is. But if he doesn't i 1)know where he lives, and 2)know his dad well. Hahaha.

Anyway last blog i told you a bit about scouting. This time is logistics. Sounds boring, but is key to getting a good season. I started about a week ago. I had to put in the order to SiS for our race nutrition. Lots of gels, bars and drinks have to be shipped in and checked. With about 5 days to go its time to sort cars. I pick up the one of the teams Subaru's and start checking it over. Roof bar, racks, space, seat positions etc. Then its transport. Make sure the riders know where they have to be and when. We are taking a ferry over to Denmark. So the night before we travel, its packing all the equipment away. The car is filled up with food, drinks, radios, tools and some spares. The bikes and rest of the spares are loaded into a van, along with the team and personal kit. Quick trip over to Denmark. Check in to a nice enough hotel, 3*. That first night is handing out kit, radios and food. Every rider now has to pretty much take care of themselves up to race day. Tomorrow morning its final checks of the bikes and equipment. That is a very basic run down of logistics. The whole season is meticulously planned out by a group of guys at Base in January/February, so all i have to do is follow a checklist.

Anyway, i have to go makes sure they have all eaten properly, and then go off to their rooms to rest up fully.
Signing off.
