Amgen Tour of California: Stage 8 - Final Stage
The final stage of this year's Tour of California was a flat course that set up perfectly for the sprinters, and that's exactly how it went down.
A small break of no account took off ahead of the pack but was easily caught 25km from the finish of the race. The sprinters got pulled up toward the front and in a classic mass sprint Stuart O'Grady of CSC led Fred Rodriguez of Predictor Lotto over the line. The fans seemed a little upset at the result as Fast Freddie is a big favorite here in California.
In the final results, Pedro Nicacio of Gateway Racing won the General Classification, the Points Classification and the Young Riders Classifcation. Martin Gilbert of Gateway Racing won the Mountains Classification and Gateway won the Team Classifcation. It was a dominating result from a team that only came into existence a few months ago.
Team manager Kurt Smith gushed over his team's performance in an interview after the event. "We came in looking for a stage win and perhaps a top 10 overall finish. We know the caliber of rider in this race. The guys weren't satisfied with that though... they wanted a tour win and they got it! Not only that... we had three riders in the top 7... the whole team performed like champions. I think we took some people by suprise and showed them what the Moo Crew can do!"

Interview with Kurt Smith of Gateway Racing
I was able to sit down with Kurt Smith of Gateway Racing for a chat after his team's dominating performance in the Tour of California. Gateway rider Pedro Nicacio took the overall, points and young riders competitions in the race and Martin Gilbert took the climbing competition. Gateway also took the team victory to complete the sweep of the awards from the race.
Q: Kurt, congratulations on the performance. What were your thoughts on the Tour of California?
KS: Well I have to admit I'm incredibly pleased and a bit suprised. We rode pretty well in the Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca, and the team did okay in the Tour de Mediterranean... but nothing to suggest the kind of success we had in California. The guys knew I really wanted a stage win... but I think they knew they could do more than that.
Q: Has their been any change in how race directors have been talking to you?
KS: Well, today we got the news that our wildcard application was accepted for Paris-Nice. This is huge for us as it will let our team get some experience in a top level race with tough competition. We'll be getting ready in the Volta a la Comunitat Valencia to put a strong showing in Paris.
Q: Who'll be leading your team in that race?
KS: Well Hernan Buenahora will be in the race as our leader, but he's just beginning his season. Mauricio Ortega will also be riding and while Buenahora will be calling the shots he might be doing so to get Ortega in position to win. Buenahora needs to be in shape for the Tour of Georgia in April. We'll also be running Daryl Impey out for the sprints.
Q: Will Pedro Nicacio be competing?
KS: Pedro's been incredible so far, but we're going to let him rest for a bit so we can use him in some of the later races this year. I really don't want to burn him out early... he's established himself as our third team leader at this point and I need to schedule his races to help the team most. Pedro's excited for what we have in store as well.
Q: Will you be competing in any of the grand tours this year?
KS: Well to be honest I hadn't planned on it... but after the Tour of California I've started to give it some thought. I think a GC win isn't really realistic yet in the big three but I've thought of entering in hopes of taking the mountain competition. It's still up in the air at this point.
Q: Thanks for your time Kurt. Good luck in your upcoming events.

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana - Stage 1
This is the first stage in a five day event that mostly covers somewhat hilly terrain, but no real mountains. A race for hill specialists, this event should involve some interesting maneuvers.
Todays route had some interesting late climbs and finished on a slight downhill to the finish line. A breakaway containing strong riders David Zabriskie of TEAM CSC and Danail Petrov of SPORT LISBOA E BENFICA got away from the pelaton on the first climb and wasn't caught until after the summitt of the last hill. Zabriskie took the most climbers points and will be the leader in that classifcation tomorrow.
The break was caught on the small incline after the mountain sprint but before the final downhill. Mauricio Ortega of Gateway Racing launched an attack with about 13km to go, just shortly after the final incline. The pelaton was slow to react, possibly having been winded during the late climb and Ortega was able to open a lead of nearly a minute.
The pelaton finally organized and gave chase, but it was too late. Ortega stayed away and crossed the finish line with a 25 second advantage over the field to take the points and overall leader jerseys and earn his second stage win this season.

i think you should change the difficulty to hard
it's not that i don't like to see you winning but it isn't realistic that you can break away of a full-speeded pack 10 km before finish and win easily |

Okay, I'll give it a try for a while...
but I reserve the right to switch back if I start sucking too bad.
What's the main difference on hard? Is the AI smarter or do they actually get a bonus on their performance?

they get better, i'm not sure if it's +1 on every stat or something like that (obviously these changes are invisible, but there)

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana - Stage 2
Going into todays stage it seemed that some moves might be made today. There were some larger climbs and the race finished on an uphill.
Suprisingly that wasn't the case. The break went out as normal, and David Zabriskie of CSC went with the group to gain a sizeable lead in the climber's competition. The Gateway Racing team had some problems leading the pack today though... they struggled mightily to bring the break back.
They succeeded in the end though, but not with enough time to let anyone make a move to gain time. Mosquera of Karpin Galicia won the uphill sprint to take the stage.
(I didn't export the results, so below is a screen shot of the stage)

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana - Stage 3
Today's stage had a climb in the middle of the stage but remained mostly downhill and flat over the second half of the stage. An eight man group escaped early on and Gateway Racing again led the chase... and again had problems bringing it back in. Inside of 10 km the break still had a minute lead over the pelaton.
Mauricio Ortega, the Gateway leader, broke from the pack with 8 km to go, hoping to bridge the gap to the break and save his leader's jersey. He looked incredibly strong as he powered toward the group and managed to catch on the end... but the pelaton was chasing with a purpose now. Ortega paused to drain his last water bottle and powered toward the front of the breakaway group as the sprint began with the pelaton just seconds behind. He started the sprint in 5th position but started passing one... and another... and another.
It became clear that while the pelaton had caught the back of the breakaway, none of the sprinters would challenge for the stage. It was a contest between Aitor Pérez Arrieta of CAISSE D'EPARGNE who had been in the break all day and Mauricio Ortega who was coming on strong in the sprint.
Ortega kept closing and closing... but he ran out of room as Perez Arrieta won the stage from the break! Mirko Lorenzetto of Milram finished third, and the pelaton all finished with the same time.

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana - Stage 4
Today's stage has some scattered climbs and finishes on a short but steep uphill to the finish. The break was brought in about 5 km before the sprint at the base of the final climb. The sprinters moved forward and duked it out fo the sprint points, but the real action was behind them as a small group attacked the pelaton just before the sprint. The group passed the sprinters on the beginnings of the uphill and built up a solid lead. The group consisted of Juanjo Cob of SAUNIER DUVAL, Joaquim Rodríguez of CAISSE D'EPARGNE, Xavier Florencio of BOUYGUES TÉLÉCOM, Luis Pérez Rodríguez of ANDALUCÍA - CAJASUR, Mauricio Ortega of GATEWAY RACING, and David Bernabéu of FUERTEVENTURA - CANARIAS.
The group built up a lead of about a minute, then race leader Mauricio Ortega attempted an attack with 3.5 km to go. He moved away from the pack and only Cobo could hang with him. Unfortunately for Ortega however, it appeared he attacked too early. Ortega ran out of energy toward the top of the hill and fell away from Cobo... then got passed by Rodriguez, Florencio and Perez Rodriguez on his way to the line. Cobo won comfortably and took over the leaders jersey in the main competition due to Ortega's ill advised attack.
Ortega can take some solace in the fact he took control of the points competition with today's fifth place finish, though I'm sure that's not what he was looking for.

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana - Final Stage
The final stage in this race had one categorized climb about a third of the way in and then was fairly flat the rest of the way. The breakaway group was caught well before the finish line and was set up nicely for a bunch sprint.
Second place rider Mauricio Ortega tried a late break to maybe take the race win but was unable to put any significant distance between himself and the pack, thus gauranteeing Juanjo Cobo the victory. Alberto Ongarato of Milram pulled away from the pack with 2 km to go and nobody was able to catch him. Daryl Impey of Gateway Racing stuck on his wheel but was unable to pass, taking second, while Uros Murn of Discovery took third.
Juanjo Cobo of SAUNIER DUVAL took first in the overall classification with his strong performance in yesterday's stage. Mauricio Ortega of GATEWAY RACING took second and Joaquim Rodríguez of CAISSE D'EPARGNE rounded out the podium. Ortega won the sprinter's competition and David Zabriskie of CSC took the mountains title.

I've gotten a bit behind posting results, so rather than spend a ton of time doing writeups that are for the most part very uninteresting, I'm just posting a summary of Paris-Nice.
My team got a wildcard (which was nice as I have no other March races due to the Calendar bug). The first few days I was protecting Buenahora and Ortega and thinking I could get a podium.. but as soon as the small hills started it was pretty clear I was out classed.
So when Buenahora crashed in Stage 4 I set everyone to protect Ortega and fight for a top 10 spot. I also sent George out on Stage 5 and he took maximum mountain points (enough to win the classifcation).
Impey did okay in the sprints, and Phinney and Armstrong were completely worthless. I was disappointed that despite having a fitness of 90+, Ardila was not useful at all as a helper, getting dropped toward the end of many stages. George was solid as a teammate, but Buenahora wasn't of much use after his crash as he had a mild injury that hurt him on the climbs.
All in all I'm pretty pleased with my first (and possibly only) Pro Tour race this season. A 7th in the GC, 6th in points and 1st in the mountains is about as good as I could hope for. I really wish Impey could have held on to third in stage 2 to give us a podium, but he was passed in the final meters.

I'm pretty pleased with it. Now I have to prepare my team for the tour of Georgia in mid april with no more march races to build race days.
I'll be pulling my Iranian riders out for that race... maybe I can take KOM honors with one of them... I can't imagine what the reaction would be in a conservative area like Georgia in the US if that happened.
