New Zealand Cycle Classic - Stage 3

farm9.staticflickr.com/8327/8149750556_1353b721cf_b.jpg
Palmerston North - Kimbolton - Palmerston North : 163.6 kms

Team Strategy

Alright guys, we've got a lot of work to do on that lead out for Nacer Bauhanni. You have to be at the front of the group before 15k to the line and you need to have line setup. We were pushed out of the way and things got all chatoic last race.

We are a great team and we have one of the best sprints, so we need to get this part of our race down. I want Bouhanni following Petit. Petit, I want you to be behind Vermote. Vermote I want you to be behind Jungels. Jungels you follow who ever is in front of you to 4k and then gun it, each of you peel off after 1k of riding hard. Lets get out there and win this one.

Race Results

Today was a very nice day, with showers in the forcast. The peleton was not letting anyone get away for most of the morning. Finally before the first climb of the day up Pohangina Valley Rd, four riders managed to get free.

farm9.staticflickr.com/8046/8149751276_ba6820c71d_b.jpg
J. Craddock (CEN), L. Romero (JSH), P. Bercz (TRS), L. Dodi (IDE) would get a 5'30" lead on the peleton.

farm9.staticflickr.com/8469/8149751544_8e30d93e39_b.jpg
Each mountain point would be contested.

farm9.staticflickr.com/8336/8149724149_0a7d6f3779_b.jpg

In the end, it'd be Nico Eeckhout (An Post - Sean Kelly) on the line in front of Russel Downing (Endura Racing) and Gediminas Bagdonas (An Post - Sean Kelly). Nacer Bouhanni (Century 21 Development Team) would cross the line in 15th position as Century 21 is still having problems lining up the lead out for Nacer and he ended up having to sprint from a long ways out and ran out of gas and watched everyone else pass him up.

Nico Eeckhout would also grab the leaders jersey from Filipe Cardoso (Efapel - Glassdrive) by 2" and Julien Vermote (Century 21 Development Team) would remain in third position at 34" off the pace.

New Zealand Cycle Classic - Stage 4

farm9.staticflickr.com/8192/8151156555_4dcaa25ea7_b.jpg
Palmerston North : 112.2 kms

Team Strategy

I don't know what we were doing out there yesterday, but that final 7 km was not what had hopped for. Today is another finish that should come to a field sprint. We just got to keep trying guys, I know you can do this and get Bouhanni to the line.

Craddock, if you like, you can try to get in the break and see if you can't get some King of the Mountain points, and try to catch up to Tomohiro Hayakawa (Team Nippo).

Race Results

Very lovely day, and the field seemed to be taking it easy after three long days of racing. After about 20 km in to the stage, there was a break lead by Jiri Hudecek (Whirlpool - Author) and Lawsom Craddock was able to get in to the break.

On the line, it was Nacer Bouhanni, King of the Sprinters.

The breakaway was never allowed a large lead today, as it was a very short stage at just over 100 km. The lead would swell to 3'23" before the peleton picked up the pace and started to lower the gap. An Post - Sean Kelly and UK Youth Cycling would be the teams to chase down the break away.

Century 21 finally gets it right and delivers Nacer Bouhanni (Century 21 Development Team) to the line in front of the bunch sprint. Nico Eeckhout (An Post - Sean Kelly) would finish more than a bike lenght back in second place, but retains the yellow jersey by 14" over Filipe Cardoso (Efapel - Glassdrive) who didn't factor in the sprint finishing 19th. Nacer Bouhanni's lead out man Adrien Petit (Century 21 Development Team), would finish 10th on the day.

Lawson Craddock (Century 21 Development Team) would take 17 mountain points to take the King of the Mountain jersey from Tomohiro Hayakawa (Team Nippo) who also has 17 points. There should be a good fight for this jersey as there are 2 Cat 4 climbs on tomorrows course.

@Ian Buttler - Not thinking I will get General Classification even after that strong Stage 1. So thought I'd try and get some KOM points and also get that sprint ironed out. Its early in the season yet, and the team I am sure we'll get things rolling.

Grand Prix la Marseillaise

farm9.staticflickr.com/8341/8156368255_24a65f24ac_b.jpg
Marseille - Marseille : 138.9 kms

Team Strategy

All right guys, this is our first race of the season, and I know we are working with each other for the first time so this might not go as smoothly as we'd like. I need you to try and get in the breaks and if a break does happen to get away, we need to make sure a team is doing work to get the gap down. Taylor, Elia, Matteo, and Fabio are our best chances in a bunch sprint.

Race Results

There was only a small breakaway of four riders who manged to get away from the peleton but could never get more than five minutes gap on the peleton. Lampre and FDJ - Bigmat were the chasing teams and making sure the break didn't get too far ahead.

farm8.staticflickr.com/7271/8156549538_6bd152a3f4_b.jpg

farm8.staticflickr.com/7137/8156549962_4011132cd6_b.jpg
Lampre would do a lot of the chasing today as the peleton didn't give the break much room.

farm9.staticflickr.com/8061/8156517863_f952d52ef4_b.jpg
J. Simon would get to the line just ahead of E. Favilli of Century 21.

In the end, it was Euskaltel - Euskadi that would keep the peleton moving as the break was caught on the last hill and there were some attacks but nothing that could get away from the Orange train. Century 21 would get lined up behind Hondo of Lampre and it'd prove the right move as they were escorted to the head of the line. With three and a half kilometers from the line, Century 21 started their train and got both Phinney and Favilli ahead of the peleton causing others to sprint early with over 2k from the finish line.

When Phinney was 1 1/2 from the line, he started his sprint with Favilli right on his wheel, and they quickly moved to the head of line, as Favilli slingshotted from Phinney, on his left, J. Simon came around and would not be caught. Century 21 placed three riders in the top 10 today.

New Zealand Cycle Classic - Stage 5

farm8.staticflickr.com/7117/8156700128_ce6f93b26f_b.jpg
Circuit : 110.6 kms

Team Strategy

I just want to let you all know how proud of you that I am. You guys have come together so well here and I see really big things in your future. Lets get Craddock that KOM jersey, and see if we can't finish off this stage with a victory for Nacer Bouhanni.

Race Results

There were a few attacks but nobody could get away from the peleton. On the first climb of the day up Valley Rd, Lawson Craddock would get third on the climb and get that one point he needed to pass Tomohiro Hayakawa of Team Nippo for KOM jersey.

The peleton controled by UK Youth and MTN - Qubecka would not allow any breaks to get away today.

Eeckhout being Bouhanni to the line by a wheel length in a bunch sprint.

Bouhanni would get a great leadout from Adrien Petit, so great that Petit would finish third on the day. Bouhanni wanted to see if Petit could get to the line first, but then out of no where Eeckhout (An Post - Sean Kelly) whipped right by the two and Bouhanni tried to get to the line, but would finish just short.

Team Strategy

We been through this now already and we know what to expect. We did a great job on the last race and we should be able to do equally as well here. Taylor Phinney as you know will be in the Tour of Qatar and we've brought Peter Schelling over from that team.

Peter if your legs are well, your free to attack or get in a break away if you'd like.

Race Results

As the race began, there were man attemts to get a breakaway free from the peleton and Tom Van Asbroeck would be one attempting to get free from Century 21, but each time breaks from behind would bring the peleton back up to the break.

After a while the peleton settled down as there was no break out front, then there was a break and Peter Schelling countered the attack, this time the peleton didn't chase it down and the break was allowed up the road quickly opened up a gap of 4 minutes.

Peter Schelling riding his first time with the classics team so that Taylor Phinney could take place in the Tour of Oman, did a great job out there in the breakaway. Doing most of the work for the break and once the peleton started to close the gap, it was Schelling on a monster pull that would see him dropped off the back when he was done as he tried to keep the peleton away for a long as possible, so Century 21 would not have to deal with attacks once it was caught.

farm9.staticflickr.com/8199/8158787980_972ba2e4c9_b.jpg
The breakaway would drop P. Schelling off with 27 km to the line.

The breakaway managed to only get 6'44" on the peleton as it was being driven by RadioShack - Nissan and Omega Pharma - Quick-Step. Liquigas - Cannondale did do some work as the peleton was in the hills and the break was gaining good time on the gap. As the peleton was closing in on the breakaway, Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky Procycling) was warry and kept near the front of the peleton, right as the catch took place, Boasson Hagen attacked the peleton.

RadioShack Nissan and Omega Pharma - Quick-Step would be the teams chasing.

Matteo Tretin would finish 23" behind the race winner, but would take the bunch sprint in front of Daniele Bennati (RadioShack - Nissan), Grega Bole (Lampre - ISD), Kris Boeckmans (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team), and Danilo Napolitano (Aqua & Sapone). Fabio Felline would finish just behind Danilo Napolitano to take 7th place on the day.

Century 21 Development Team would take the team competition over Katusha Team, Liquigas - Cannondale, and AG2R La Mondiale. Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team would finish off the Top 5 for the Team Classificaton. All in all it was a successfult day for Century 21, again taking second place on the race for this new team that still has some things to iron out in the leadout, but they are continuing to put themselves in position to challenge for the win, and gettting good results for such a young team.
