Thanks. I haven`t spend my wage and went with 14 riders for most of the time to make sure I can always spend more on him. But better this way as his wage is in a good area. |

Jonathan Bellis joins Rothaus Aegon
Bellis was one of last years dominator in the Continental Tour. He won lots of races including the tour of Britain or Tour of South Africa. He is a great puncheur with a great sprint. This helped him to get an advantage over other puncheurs, who might have been better on the pure uphill part.
After one day of transfers we decided to change our focus from Dutch and German puncheurs and bid on Bellis, who was supposed to leave the African Jaguar Eritel squad. As other teams were interested as well the price went pretty high but in the end we think he is really worth it. The Brit is already a high quality rider with only 25 years of age and will still have time to become even better.
He will be our main leader in the hilly races and even though the competition seems to be much higher in PCT this season we hope and think he can have another great season.
Special thanks to Jaguar`s manager SportingNonsense, who made this trade possible.
This means we now have a Dutch leader in Boom, a German leader in Geschke, which was important for our sponsors plus international leaders in Bellis and Vantomme, which makes it a good core to build around. |

Still the team is far from having the minimum of 20 riders but at least we can announce 2 more signings today. First is the Spaniard Xavier Zabalo. He will be a great addition as he can help us in races with team time trials as also being a great helper for the puncheurs and a solid breakaway rider. So a good allrounder. With only 26 years of age he is also in the age area where most of our riders will be this season.
Second new signing is the young Italian puncheur talent Davide Villela. He is still very unexperienced but will be a solid rider in the future. We are very lucky to have him in our team. But as we think he might develope better in a CT team he is already linked to a loan deal. So most probably he won`t ride for us this season but coming back to us next season, when he will be already a great help for us. |

Rothaus Aegon almost complete
Michiel Van Aelbroeck just joined us and will be a great piece for the next season. Behind Lars Boom he will be our strongest time trialist and pretty possible we will see this two later in the duo timetrial as well.
His contract wasn`t renewed with Saab-Scania after the last season and as we were looking for time trialists late in the transfer season he was a perfect rider for us. With only 27 years of age he still has lots of goals for himself.
Our 2nd signing is the 32 year old experienced Spaniard Jesus Tendero. Just like Van Aelbroeck he will have his biggest strength against the clock. But also he is a very solid breakaway rider, who knows exactly when to attack and how to behave in these. So we hope he can bring in his experience to our younger riders. |

Jonathan Bellis is the new star in our team. He really had an awesome season in 2012 and even with the expected stronger competition we hope for lots of top results. His main goals will be the hilly races. As he isn`t the top puncheur in PCT he will most likely do the easier hilly races where he can use his sprint advantage in the final.
Lars Boom was supposed to get some training but due to our decision to sign Bellis, this goal failed. In the end the actual World Champion is still one of the top riders on PCT level combining lots of strengths. On the other hand the time trial competition is extremely tough this season and Boom is no longer a definite top5 favourite in these races. Still we hope to get some great results with him.
Maxime Vantomme is looking back on a horrible season without a single race win. Still we decided to keep him in our team. Mainly as we had to make sure to have a sprinter in our squad. And so we hope he can justify this step in his second season for us. Different to last season he will more focus on the classics instead of stage wins in stage races. This should help him a lot and still we found some races to fill up his calendar. I have a good feeling with him actually.
Simon Geschke is some kind of co-leader behind Bellis. He is a very similar rider actually with a better sprint but weaker on the hills. Still he can score lots of points this season. He will get the chance to ride for himself in several races where he either goes for high GC`s or stage wins. In other races he will be Bellis` last helper or part of the sprint train.
Rob Ruijgh isn`t supposed to be a big point scorer for us in 2013. Just like last season we won`t participate in too many mountain races. But still there are some and there all our hopes are on his shoulders. In every mountain race he will be our leader and seeing he won`t be a top favourite this gives him quite a few tactical opportunities, which he more or less always used in the last season, where he delivered quite a few points.
He decided to stay with our team as he liked the atmosphere here and we were able to keep most riders. So the core will be the same. And here he can go for his own chances instead of riding for a stronger leader only. This plus the face that we promised him to slightly go towards more mountain races next season, when Koep and Olivier will be improved, so that we have minimum of 3 solid mountain riders. |

Claudio Cucinotta had some very good results last season. This season he might get more chances and we hope he will use some of these. With 31 years he is one of the most experienced in our squad.
Christoff Van Heerden will mainly have lead out tasks for Vantomme. But in some races he will also lead the team. For example in his home country in the Tour of South Africa he will be our sprinter.
Martin Velits was one of our most important helpers last season. He is a great allrounder with strength in time trials and breakaways and can also help on a bit harder terrain. In general a great rider to have.
Michiel Van Aelbroeck is a pure time trialist. He will be an important part in the TTTs this season but will also get some chances to ride for his own and might be part of some sprint trains.
Andrei Kunitski will be one of the most important helper in the hilly classics. Due to his decent strength against the clock he is always able to get a decent GC as well.
Aurelien Passeron was the big surprise last season and it will be hard to repeat this performance. He top10`d in Bayern and Turkey and had lots of other great results due to his activeness. He always tries to get into breakaways.
Valentin Iglinski is capable of riding uphill and has a nice sprint in the end. Except for his win in the Barcelona Classic last season he couldn`t show his full potential. So this season we might see him more often.
Jesus Tendero is a similar rider to Velits actually. Good in time trials and in important role for the TTTs but also a great rider for breakaways. He is a real fighter and might have an advantage in successful groups due to his decent sprint.
Xavier Zabalo will be important in time trials and as a helper for the hilly leaders. So some kind of luxury domestique in many races. He can also ride on a high level on the flat, which will make him very important.
Paul Voss was already signed last season but went in a loan deal to Festina in the Pro Tour. Stronger than ever he comes back and will mainly be Ruijgh`s helper in the mountains.
Carlo Westphal only had 13 race days last season. But he delivered us the first ever Rothaus stage win in the Tour of Wellington. So we decided to renewing him and give him more chances this season. His strength is the flat area, where he might show some late attacks again.
Hannes Blank was long considered to leave the team. But after his stage win in Southland last season he earned a new contract. He might be the last piece in our TTT train. |

Kristian Sbaragli just left the building signing his contract. This makes our team complete now with 20 riders. The young Italian is a really big talent and has chances to become one of the best leadout riders. Also he will surely have some chances to win races on his own in smaller races. We are happy to have him after some tough negotiations.
Daan Olivier surely is our biggest talent. The future climber has chances to even perform on a high level in GT`s in some years. We are happy to lead his way and hope to build a climber team around him starting next season.
Maximillian Schachmann goes into his 2nd season for us and is our last talent riding for us in 2013. The German has his biggest strength in the hills and is already a bit more experienced than first two. So he is likely to make only one jump this season.
Thomas Koep has the honor to ride for last years PT winner Vesuvio Accumalux this season. There he will make the next step to come back stronger next season. Perfect timing to make a climbing trio with Olivier and Ruijgh then, which will still not high quality but already better than this or last season. Plus he will still have a bit more potential to improve.
Alexander Krieger is a very interesting rider. When reaching his full potential he is able to win sprints with some training. He might be one of the next German sprinters. This season he is riding for the newly promoted Simply Red Bull team in the Pro Tour.
Johim Ariesen was our first signing last season. This season he needed the experience of riding in the Pro Tour. So he is riding for Pokerstars.com this season.
Davide Villela is one of the next puncheur generation. The Italian was supposed to fill our squad but after some negotiations we decided to send him to Kappa-ENI in the Continental Tour this season, where he can collect other experience. He will be back next season.
This makes a team size of the minimum amount of just 20 riders. But we think that`s enough to fulfill all our goals and send quality squads to every race.
The main focus obviously is on the sprints with Vantomme and hilly races with Bellis and Geschke. Also Lars Boom in the hilly/TT races should do very well.
In the mountains it`s just Rob Ruijgh this season, so we don`t expect that much. Same for the cobbles, where Boom will be in some races but definitely not in all.
Our team goal for this season is to develop our young talents and being successful in the aimed races. Then everything is possible. Promotion might be difficult this season but with a bit of luck not impossible. But actually we plan to promote within the next 3 years, when our talents are more improved.
Being at the end of the transfer season we can say, that our selected goals are all possible. Even if some became higher after seeing other squads. But this was actually planned before as they were selected for already signed riders in Boom and Vantomme.
Maybe one stagiare is still coming at a later date. |

Transfers completed - Two stagiares signed
Today the transfer window was closed and we can announce two more signings. Both will join us in August on a 3 months stagiare contract. First is the Suisse rider Arnaud Grand, a future cobbler, who might be the next Fabian Cancellara from Switzerland, at least speaking of Northern Classics.
Second is the Australian track cyclist Alexander Edmondson. He might be a solid sprinter in some years and is happy to start his road cycling career in our team although he won`t have many races for us as he is supposed to keep riding track this season before he hopes for a longer contract starting next season.
This will finally leave our team with 20 riders and 2 stagiares later in the year. We think that`s a solid base to work around to fulfill our goals.

Rothaus invited to Pro Tour Classics
Just like last season we decided to ask for some PT wildcards and after being in Germany last season we were hoping to be in the Netherlands this year.
And luckily we were invited to our most wanted race with the Amstel Gold Race. We think that it`s a race, where we could even challenge some of the big teams as it`s not hard enough as others so that the difference between the strongest puncheurs isn`t that important. And with Jonathan Bellis we have a perfect rider for this race, so he is supposed to be our leader there and will get strong support.
Also we were invited to the flat Pro Tour Classic in Australia. After realized, that Vantomme can`t ride Rund um Köln due to race clashes, this was our race to ask for. We will give Vantomme a chance there to ride against the top sprinters such as Bennati, Boonen or Bewley.
We are happy to again get two wildcards and want to thank the race organisation to have the trust in us. |

Maxime Vantomme leads in Down Under
As many already had expected the schedule for Maxime Vantomme was a lot better planned than in 2012. He will ride in 13 classics in comparison to only 6 in 2012. Not sure right now why I had to make it 13...as this can prove to be a horrible number of races.... But the races will far more suit the strength of the fast Belgium. So we really hope to see a performance boost by him this season. Also the pressure of the big money is more or less no longer there as his salary is not much higher than the average.
But enough said about his contract and expectations. 9 riders were sent to an early season training camp in Australia in preparation on the early Down Under Classic while the rest is staying in Germany to train in the Black Forest area.
Why 9 and not only 8 is easy. Alexander Edmondson is one of our 2 stagiares and so he will stay in Australia for the first half of the season. But right now there are some crit races there as well where he will participate and we used this opportunity to make him known to a part of our roster and some team managers.
The other 8 riders are preparing there for our first 2 races. First will be the Down Under Classic, while the second is another sprinter classic in Hong Kong: Tour of South China Sea.
Maxime Vantomme
Claudio Cucinotta
Christoff Van Heerden
Valentin Iglinski
Michiel Van Aelbroeck
Carlo Westphal
Xavier Zabalo
Jesus Tendero
Tendero will be the only rider heading toward Europe after the Down Under Classic while the other 7 will also ride the Hong Kong classic.
Obviously in both we expect good results by Vantomme and expect to meet the strongest sprinters of the PCT there. His support is mainly based of other sprinters to bring him in position and good riders for the flat to do the pace.
More information to come at a later date. |

Interview: Alexander Edmondson
"The Australian" had an intereview with young talent Alexander Edmondson just after stage 4 of the Bay Classic series. Coming from the track he will concentrate on his road career in future and signed as stagiare for the German/Dutch Rothaus team.
The Australian: You are at the start of your career. Quite late you got the chance to ride as stagiare for an European team. What plans do you have for the future?
Edmondson: Right now I have still a lot to learn. It`s difficult to ride long races and in especially classics when you come from the track. But I had a good training in the last months and feel quite confident that I made the right decision. My strength are the sprint finishes and I hope to be competive in a few years.
TA: You started this season with the Bay Classic Series. What was your impression?
E: It was a nice experience. It`s always nice to race in my home country and I was part of Team Drapac with Leigh Howard. It was great to learn from him how to position in a sprint. Unfortunately it wasn`t enough for a stage win for us.
TA: You looked pretty strong with a 14th and 16th in the sprints and a breakaway appearance.
E: True. As said I trained very hard over the last few months and it was my first season race. I was very motivated and wanted to show myself as often as possible.
TA: You will start for Rothaus in August. What are your plans for the time in between?
E: I hope to be part of a few more criteriums. I already trained with some of my future team mates like Vantomme, Cucinotta or Van Heerden the last week but my concentration is on the Australian events at the moment where I will try to improve before joining the squad in August.
TA: Who do you think, will win the Down Under Classics?
E: Well. After 3 wins in the Bay Classics I think Chris Sutton has the perfect form. Maybe we will see him surprising there. But I do hope for Vantomme of course. |

Vantomme with a good start into the season
The Down Under Classic was our first and race in the season and will be our only race in January. And most important it was directly a season goal as we were aiming a top 5 in this flat sprinter classic. It shows the trust we still have in Maxime Vantomme as he is our only sprinter capable of doing so.
Our sprint preparation was pretty decent. Iglinski and Cucinotta both tried to bring him in position but this failed when our Italian sprinter crashed pretty nasty. Luckily Vantomme reacted very quick and went to Greipel`s wheel, which was the perfect position. Also a later crash including Belgium Van Aelbroeck couldn`t stop Vantomme in his aim to win the Classics.
But when the real sprint started he soon lost his perfect wheel and got blocked a bit. For quite some time it looked like a rather disappointing result. But Vantomme showed his strength as a pure sprinter and came back to finish on a nice 5th, fulfilling our expectations in him and the first team goal. So the mood was actually pretty good in the team bus at the end although more was probably possible. But most important for Vantomme was to start with a good result after last year`s awful season. |

Tour of South China Sea - Preview
The 2nd classic this season is coming soon and again it`s one for Maxime Vantomme, who is having a good feeling after his 5th in the season opener in Down Under. Except for Jesus Tendero it`s the same team, so we go into this race with a lot of trust, in especially as the start list seems to be not as strong as the Down Under Classic.
Most important helpers might be Claudio Cucinotta and Christoff Van Heerden, who are supposed to bring him into position in the final. Last one is coming back in a good form from the Herald Cycle Series, where he finished as 4th on the last two stages. Hopefully this will be a good sign.
Our goal must be the top 5 in this race, even though Vantomme is actually aiming the podium here. We see a big difference between the 2013 Vantomme and the one from last season. So we are pretty confident to see a big improvement from him.

The Herald Cycle Series
Two of our riders were riding some criterium in South Africa over the last few days. First one is obviously our South African sprinter Van Heerden, who was one of the top sprinters there. Unfortunately 2x4th was the maximum for him. But his form definitely became better and better with every day. The 2nd rider was Slovakian Martin Velits. He mainly surprised with solid sprint results such as the 5th on the final day. His form is already pretty good, which is a good sign for his later appearances in San Luis and Thüringen.
Both of them finished in the top10 overall which is definitely a solid result and a good performance of our riders.
"When I heard of the chance to be part of the South African National Team I didn`t consider very long. I directly confirmed my participation, then I asked my team manager", Van Heerden. |

Tour of South China Sea
The Tour of South China Sea was our 2nd race this season and the start of a long list of races in February. We expected a typical sprinter classic and sent Vantomme with the wish of a top5 or even a podium. In the end the race proved to be a bit more difficult.
Even though the peloton was always controlling the breakaway the pace dropped at some time. Rothaus would have had to do the pace then as Vantomme was still riding in a good position at a time where many sprinters already got dropped on the climbs. Unfortunately just like other teams we didn`t chase at this race deciding point.
And unfortunately also none of our riders decided to join the late attacks around the race winner Vaitkus. So Vantomme could only participate in the sprint of the peloton for the 10th where he finished on a solid 13th. So the 4th would have been possible at least.
So far to the negative things of this race as we couldn`t fullfil our expectations. But there were also a lot of positives.
Maxime Vantomme would probably have been one of the first riders to be dropped in 2012. This season he is in a much better shape and was always riding in a good position next to other favourites. This will give him a bit more confidence for the upcoming races. Right now he makes a short race break before finally heading to Europe to make his debut there in the Olympia Tour.
Result
13 | Maxime Vantomme | 25 | Valentin Iglinski | 33 | Carlo Westphal | 40 | Christoff Van Heerden | 53 | Claudio Cucinotta | 90 | Xavier Zabalo | 103 | Michiel Van Aelbroeck |
Tour of South Africa
8 were heading to South Africa. Within these our top rider Jonathan Bellis, last years winner of this race and again one of the favourites. He will have big support there by Ruijgh, Kunitski, Passeron and Iglinski. Van Heerden will come home to fight for solid sprint positions while neo pros Olivier and Sbaragli make their Rothaus debut.
Our goal for this race is easy. A HC race win would be awesome and we know that Bellis is capable to do so. But the high amount of top puncheurs here is incredible. So this might become more difficult than last season. So a top5 would already be very good as well as 1 stage win. Passeron, Ruijgh or Kunitski are well known breakaway riders but due to their duties to support Bellis it might be hard for them to shine in this race. More likely Olivier or Sbaragli will try something on 1-2 stages.

Tour of South Africa
Stage 1
The first stage in South Africa did just finish and we can already be quite happy with the outcome. Without a top sprinter here we did expect home rider Van Heerden to show some nice sprints. But in the end it was completely different and even more unexpected.
The sprint trains were formed and a Rothaus rider was in ~8th position. But it wasn`t Christoff Van Heerden, neither was it Jonathan Bellis, who was doing well in sprint finishes last season. It was Valentin Iglinski, the winner of the 2012 Barcelona Classic. He wasn`t known for good performances in sprint finishes so far. More likely he performed the best on harder terrain and breakaways.
But today he was our strongest and actually one of the strongest in the peloton. Only South Africa`s top sprinter Nolan Hoffman and Drujon were finishing ahead of him. Right behind this duo Valentin Iglinski won the sprint for the 3rd and presented our colours in a perfect way. While our sprints last season failed very often, we can be pretty happy with them so far this season.
Also it was the first race for Daan Olivier and Kristian Sbaragli in our jersey. Both did a quite unseen job as helper roles in the peloton. Both will be seen far more often in 1-2 years.

Tour of San Luis
The Tour of San Luis just ended. Our goal for this race was to have one rider in the top 10 and a stage win. After 7 days of cycling we can say that we acchieved all of our goals.
Jesus Tendero finished on a very good 8th. We expected a top25 from him but for the top 10 we had expected riders like Geschke, Zabalo or Velits. But while last two finished as 20. and 16. and delivered some GC points, Geschke was quite unseen in the hilly stages. Therefore he acchieved our second goal and delivered a brilliant stage win on the last stage, which looked like a sprinter stage at first. On the second view it was too difficult for several sprinters and so Geschke used his skills and won in a reduced sprint finish.
Also Claudio Cucinotta was having a decent race with a 4th and 10th on the sprint stages. On the negative side he was only able to sprint in 2/4 possible sprint finishes. In general this was a solid race with ~7 points/race day and in especially our first 2013 stage win by new signing Simon Geschke.
