Down Under Classic results
The first race of the season is over, and it was an exciting one. A very close battle in the mass sprint finish saw Greipel beating Napolitano on the line. Behind the main sprinters it was UPC with a nice showing, but a lack of team work saw Hopman just miss the top 10. 5 others also finished inside the top 35, scraping up points but lacking that standout finish which would have been so nice.

Before the race Groenewegen was interviewed and we got the chance to talk to him again right after the race.
I
Hi Dylan, congratulations on scoring ranking points in your first ever pro race. How was today for you?
D
It was a tough day for sure. We didn't have to work during the day, as only 4 riders were in the break. But the final 20 km were crazy I can tell you. Really twisting route, don't really know what the organizers were thinking. And if some people do dangerous stuff as well crashes are almost guaranteed.
I
What do you mean?
D
Well, some Rothaus riders just dropped back from the front, causing massive swerving and just creating a dangerous situation. We couldn't really find each other after, as the room to move up spots was severely limited. And then riders started crashing out.
I
Well, none of your team mates crashed, in fact you almost all made it into the top 35. You were 27th, how does that feel?
D
Ah that's great to hear. I'm pretty satisfied with the result I got myself, as I believe that's about where I should place myself in a field like this. But I think Tom (Veelers) was stuck behind me and we really wanted to work for him. I believe Jan (Hopman) secured himself a spot on some train, what place did he finish in?
I
11th. But the plan was to work for Veelers?
D
Aw that's too bad, we really should have worked together more, I think we were one of the stronger teams out there as we could save ourselves all day long. And yes, we wanted to position Tom where he could launch himself into a top 10 spot, ideally somewhere in the top 5. We knew it would be hard to contend for a podium today. But I guess we will have to fine tune our sprint train some more.
I
Most of the team will remain in Australia for the Tour Down Under, what do you think will happen there?
D
We will have Boy (van Poppel) and Francesco (Gavazzi) joining us, so we hope to be there in the sprints again. Francesco might even get a high overall result if he's feeling well. We have some time to work on our coordination, but in the end you need some luck in finishes like today.

Tour Down Under preview
The PCT circus stays in Australia for the first C1 race of the season. As announced earlier this race has attracted a full field, and the competition will be fierce. The route is a mix for sprinters and puncheurs, with the latter getting a real opportunity to grab the GC on stage 5. Old Willunga Hill might very well be the key to overall success here. But the sprinters and breakaway riders will also feature in this race, as each day promises to see a big battle one way or the other.
Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim will field a team set up for the sprints. Gavazzi will be lead out by his lieutenant Priamo. Knees and Oelerich are there for general support, and maybe some attacking in the hillier stages. Youngsters Teunissen, Groenewegen and D v Poppel will round out the team. The latter two might also help in sprints or try to sneak into a break to gather bonus seconds and experience.
Boy van Poppel won't be here, as opposed to what Groenewegen has stated in an interview earlier.
The expectations for this race depend very much on the field. We can expect stronger sprinters than our riders, but everything goes in breaks and Gavazzi has what it takes to stay with the favorites and maybe sneak some bonus seconds here or there for a top 10 in GC. That would be the ideal scenario however and we will probably have to strive for a stage win as best possible outcome.

Tour Down Under stage 1
The season starts well for team UBI down under. Gavazzi was an outside bet, but he pulled off the win in stage one in the TdU. Team UBI was active right from the start, as the first attacker of the day was Teunissen. After that move got shut down 5 others got the chance, but mainly Cisco kept the break in check.
The sprint was well organised by Sram and airBaltic, but it was Gavazzi who could benefit the most and cross the line with his arms in the sky.

Congratulations tyriion, that's one fine victory and Gavazzi might hold the jersey for the next days also. |

Congrats on the win so soon in the season. DUC showed your guys might struggle when all the big names are there, but this definately bodes well for your season

Yes, hopefully this wasn't a fluke and I'll be able to gather points all season. With luck I avoid the big names as much as possible.

Tour Down Under stage 2
This stage features some pretty tough climbing and a first shift in the GC is expected. An early break is easily controlled by our team. Big thanks to our younglings Danny, Dylan and Mike!
In the end it's a group of about 40 riders sprinting for the stage. While Efimkin wins it for Cisco, Gavazzi stays comfortably in the pack and his leader jersey. Mission accomplished for today.

Tour Down Under stage 3
Todays stage is an easy one, and loads of teams want to work for a mass sprint. Not a tough day at all and Gavazzi keeps his jersey finishing 6th in the sprint.
loads of teams sharing the work
Tour Down Under stage 4
This stage has a pretty long climb in the final quarter of the route, so Gavazzi hopes for a tired field of sprinters. We again do most of the work, Gavazzi showing off a very orange yellow jersey with 10k to go.
But it's Haussler who wins 2 in a row, showing he is the strongest sprinter in the field. Gavazzi grabs 8th and keeps the lead.

Tour Down Under stage 5
The queenstage of this year's Tour Down Under will see a hill top finish on Old Willunga Hill. Gavazzi is expected to loose quite some time here as everyone is looking at Efimkin (Cisco) and Dowsett (Jaguar).
Although there is a large break all day long, a selected front group forms after the first hill. 50 riders will battle for the stage and GC. Some early attacks are easily quashed and then it's a final sprint up the hill. Gavazzi does struggle, but not so much as expected and Oelerich really hangs in there.
Gavazzi struggling, Oelerich starts the sprint in 7th position
In the end Oelerich finishes 11th and Gavazzi 20th. As there were no significant gaps behind stage winner Dowsett this results in a 3rd spot for Gavazzi in the overall ranking, while Oelerich moves up into 13th. A way better result than we had hoped for until now.

Tour Down Under stage 6 and review
The final stage is the shortest of them all and completely flat. As such we don't expect Gavazzi to be able to grab bonus seconds here to sneak into the lead again. The stage ended in a mass sprint like expected and Gavazzi showed his strong form.
Gavazzi in prime position
But there were stronger sprinters around. Gavazzi still ended in 4th position, which is very nice for him on such a flat stage. Oelerich couldn't position himself for the sprint and because of a 113th spot on this stage he dropped to 20th in GC. Still very respectable!
Overall
1 | Alex Dowsett | Jaguar - Eritel | 18h50'29 | 2 | Aleksandr Efimkin | Cisco Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | Francesco Gavazzi | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | + 12 | 20 | Jan Oelerich | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | +32 | 43 | Christian Knees | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | + 4'57 | 56 | Matteo Priamo | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | + 13'03 | 74 | Dylan Groenewegen | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | +17'35 | 75 | Danny Van Poppel | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | s.t. | 109 | Mike Teunissen | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | + 22'53 |
All in all a very good showing. The two January races in Australia have yielded more points than expected, though we had hoped for them. The riders showed strength, even though most journalists didn't give them a lot of chances at the beginning of the month.
We're especially happy with the riding our youths have shown. In the Down Under Classic both Groenewegen and D v Poppel placed inside the top 31 () and in the Tour Down Under all three worked for days on end to keep Gavazzi in the yellow jersey. Pretty impressive riding for three riders in their first ever pro races!

Nice job from your boys to keep Gavazzi so competitive, he was truly a strong signing. These might be the points you need to keep yourself well clear of relegation.

Tour of South China Sea preview
As we travel a little closer to Europe this is another flat classic. Gavazzi will be our leader, with a leadout train of Boy van Poppel and Priamo. We hope for the small rise to tire out some sprinters, but as TdU showed, on a flat circuit Gavazzi comes in at a top 10 position.
The team is completed by 4 younglings. Teunissen, Danny van Poppel and Groenewegen should be known by now and they're joined by Schoonbroodt in his first pro race.

Tour of South China Sea review
This race will go down for us as one of missed opportunities. First Schoonbroodt tried to join a break, but missed the decisive one and then we missed the chance to catch the break with 10 km to go after many sprinters had been dropped and other flat specialists were tired out.
The course proved to be tougher than expected and a break took the win. In the end Gavazzi got 2nd in the pack sprint, beating top earner Napolitano to the line. Sadly there were 9 riders who finished in front of the pack. Boy van Poppel (16th) and Priamo (18th) rounded out a nice team effort that just didn't get the reward we could have gained.
A nice lesson in tactics this one.

Tour de San Luis preview
As the season moves inexorably on we leave the east to race in the west. To be precise it's the Tour de San Luis in Argentina. 7 stages await and the first TT of the season for our team.
Other than the TT stages 3 and 5 seem to be the key stages as they finish uphill and boast big climbs earlier in the route as well. But the other stages won't be easy for the sprinters either.
Our team will be lead by Elijzen, who will hopefully be able to hang on to the better punchers here or at least put so much time into them in the almost 20 km ITT that a good GC is within reach. We're hoping for a top 10. Lorenzetto will also make his debut as our lead sprinter and his ability over hills should be a boon looking at the slightly tough flat stages. These 2 will be aided by Knees, Oelerich and van Leijen, who might also get into breaks if the GC goes down the drain. Oelerich showed in Australia that he could even be a back up leader on uphill finishes. Danny van Poppel and Teunissen round out the squad.

Tour de San Luis review
The Tour de San Luis had two faces for us. Until stage 4 everything went according to plan and expectations, but afterwards the results were lacking a bit.
It all began on stage 1 when Lorenzetto took a quite surprising stage win.
On stage 2 we did our share of the work, but the easier profile didn't leave Lorenzetto a chance. Which wasn't bad as it was expected. On stage 3 our important riders Elijzen and Lorenzetto finished in the first group, still according to plan. And as we didn't have the leader jersey anymore Teunissen showed himself in the break.
Stage 4 was the ITT and Elijzens big chance. A 7th place isn't bad as it puts him in the top 10 in the GC.
Although we're well represented in the breaks over the next stages, the results are poor. Stage 5 sees the punchers breaking free and Elijzen dropping in the GC, while stage 6 sees poor positioning on his part and a further drop. Stage 7 had Lorenzetto written all over it, but he had to start from too far back and didn't get the result we hoped for. That also made him lose the green jersey.
All in all a tour with two faces for us.

Bahir Dar Preview and review
After races in South America and Australia it's now time for an African race before we move to Europe. And it's the first cobbled race for us this season so Veelers will be keen to do better than in the Down Under Classic.
He will be helped by Traksel, Knees, Oelerich, Kavsek, Hassink and Teunissen.
As the racing got underway Veelers felt good about halfway through and joined a move by some other riders. But it wasn't the right time and he wasted energy he missed later on as the decisive move was made. Our best finishing rider turned out to be Knees, in 12th. Rather disappointing, especially by Veelers.

Thüringen Rundfahrt preview
Finally the team moves to Europe for an important race for our co-sponsor Boehringer-Ingelheim.
This will not only be our first European race, but also the first race of our star Reus. The somewhat hilly parcours combined with a challenging TT looks perfect for him. To aid him, especially in the first TT we also send Elijzen here. For the sprints we have Lorenzetto, who hopefully can benefit from the somewhat selective flat stages and Priamo, Hopman, Schwarzmann and Danny van Poppel.
The goal is for Reus to get as high in the GC as possible, depending on the startlist a win might be possible. A top 3 should be achieved in all cases. Lorenzetto might grab a stage like he did in Argentina.
