Team Raleigh - Oakley | 2013 | Team Presentation
sutty68
The Team did extremely well in South Africa Wink

And it looks like they have a real gem in Townshend Smile

Miguel98
Good result in South Africa

Jakstar22
Good racing in South Africa. He team is really starting to shape up.

@Ian Butler and Jakstar22 - Thanks. New Zealand went much better than expected. Not sure we can continue to perform above expectations though!

@sutty68 @Miguel98 @Jakstar22 - Yeah, I think we did as well as we could in South Africa, given our riders' abilities and fitness. Thanks!

Beverbeek Classic
25.02

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Beverbeekprofile.jpg

This one day is held in the Belgian region of Limbrug and has been running since 1998. The relatively flat parcours should suit the sprinters.

Startlist

An Post and Landbouwkredit probably have the strongest teams with sprinters like Bagdonas, Traksel and Commeyne ideally suited for this terrain. Bacquest and Dowing were also rated as favourites by the pundits going into the race.

Raleigh Startlist

What of our own chances? The team are lacking in race fitness, so we had no great expectations going into the race, although in Briggs we certainly had a contender if he was a good day.

Race report

The race got off to a furious start with numerous riders attempting to breakaway. The bunch wouldn't let anything go though. Eventually, Raleigh's Jamie Sparling was allowed to go. No-one followed Jamie, so he was set for a long lonely day in a solo break.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Sparlingsolobreak.jpg
Sparling ploughs a lonely furrow

His efforts were doomed from the outset and he was caught with 20km to go. The sprinters teams began to position themselves and with 9km to go Raleigh found themselves at the head of affairs with an impressive train stringing out the bunch.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Raleightrain.jpg
Raleigh hit the front

Holohan did a superb 4km pull on the front, and then Janssen took over from 5km, still keeping Raleigh out in front. As Janssen pulled over at 3km to go, Tobyn Horton began to lead out the sprint, with Holloway in his wheel and Briggs last man. Briggs' rivals Bacquet, Silvestre, Pinto and Commeyne were all queueing up behind.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Train2.jpg
Horton opens up the sprint

Holloway took over from Horton but as they went under the 1km banner, Raleigh were beginning to get swamped. Briggs would need to pull something special out now to get the victory.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Trainswamped.jpg
Raleigh got swamped at 1km to go

But the riders that gone past the Raleigh train began to tire. Briggs still had something left in the tank and sought to surge his way back to the front. In the meantime, Commeyne had hit the front and was looking set for victory. Was there enough road left for Briggs to catch him?

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Headforfinish.jpg
Commeyne drives for the line, Briggs directly behind him

Briggs didn't quite have enough to haul back Commeyne, but nonetheless earned a creditable second place. Kern rounded out the podium, while Holloway hung on for 8th.

February News

Another good month for Team Raleigh. Despite lacking race fitness, the team impressed in both the Tour of South Africa and the Beverbeek Classic. In South Africa, the team delighted the sponsors by winning the KOM competition through young Brenna Townshend. The 18 year old showed he could have bright future in procyling. Briggs came close in Belgian, taking a fine second place in the Beverbeek Classic. The rider of the month though was Evan Oliphant. He took two third places on his way to 6th overall in South Africa against a strong field.

Contract News

In more good news for the team, Liam Holohan agreed to a two-year extension to his contract to 2014. Holohan impressed in New Zealand in the hills and the team demonstrated their faith in the 23 year old with a new contract.

The team started March with another one-day race in the Belgian flatlands. Another day for the sprinters?

The field was packed full of fast men: Commeyne, Eeckhout, Bagdonas, Downing, Traksel, Bacquet, Amorison and Smolen were are all touted as contenders.

The team would be hoping Briggs could repeat his strong performance at the Beverbeek Classic, despite the fact he stil wasn't up to race shape quite yet.

Race report

It was beautiful day out in Belgium and Hampton made the day's break.

An Post and Landbouwkredit had things firmly in control back in the bunch.

A sea of green at the front of peloton

The race was all back together with 10km to go. Raleigh decided to repeat their tactics from Beverbeek and formed an impressive lead out train for Briggs, going elbow to elbow with An Post's train.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/RaleighvAnPOst.jpg
Raleigh vs An Post

Coming into the final 3km and Raleigh were still looking strong. Amorison and Lloyd fought for Briggs' wheel, while only Bellis was left to lead out An Post's Eeckhout.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/RaleighvAnpost2.jpg
Things looked good for Raleigh with 3km to go

Bellis caused panic by taking up the sprint very early. Raleigh's train disintegrated and Briggs lost Sulzberger's wheel. Eeckhout then came out from behind Bellis's wheel, with Dowing and Commeyne just behind.

Eeckhout leads the dash for the line

Eeckhout held on to take the win, beating Beverbeek winner Commeyne into second. Britain's Russell Downing picked up third. Sulzberger sneaked 10th with Briggs further down in 14th. A bad day for Raleigh.

The field was full of top puncheurs. Betancur, Pellizotti, Sella, Rabottini, Serpa, Garzelli and Tour of South Africa winner Fred Rodriguez would provide very stiff competition for the Raleigh boys.

Raleigh startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Trofeozteam.jpg

After his success in South Africa, we were putting our hopes in Evan Oliphant today. Beating this stellar field was going to be a tough ask however!

Race report

South Africa KOM winner Townshend got into the early break, joined by Bissinger (Vorarlberg), Mould (An Post) and Niyonshuti (MTN)

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Townshendinbreak.jpg
Young gun Townshend got in to the day's break

The break was brought back on the final climb however. Rodriguez then put in a powerful attack.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Rodriguezattacks.jpg
Fred Rodriguez attacks

Only Betancur, Pellizotti and Sella could respond. Oliphant and Holohan were caught out of position behind and stuck in the peleton.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Fourlead.jpg
Rodriguez, Pellizotti, Sella and Betancur formed an unstoppable breakaway group

The four opened out an impressive lead in no time and with 1km to go Rodriguez lead out the sprint.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Finalsprint.jpg
The four leaders fight it out

In the end it was Pellizotti who took the win (sorry, no photo!), with Betanur in second and Rodriguez rounding out the podium.

Hampton managed a strong 13th place while Oliphant came in a frustrated 16th. A reasonable result for Raleigh all things considered; it was always going to be a big ask to get a result against this opposition.

Trofeo Porec
11.03

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Porecprofile.jpg

This race on the Istrian peninsula of Croatia has been going since 2000. The course is considered flat, although the undulating terrain and the odd cobbled section makes this a challenging course.

Startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Porecstartlist.jpg

This race attracted a relatively small field. Van Rensburg, Jorgenson and Tennant were considered favourites along with Raleigh's own Jamie Sparling.

Raleigh startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Porecteam.jpg

With Sparling lacking race sharpness, we weren't as convinced as the pundits that he was a contender. Instead, our plan was to look to Hampton and Sulzberger to impress today.

Race report

The day started badly to say the least for Raleigh, when our leader Hampton was forced to retire injured.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Hamptonretires.jpg
Hampton abandons, a major blow for Raleigh

Distracted by this bad news, Raleigh didn't manage to get a rider into the break today. Instead, Pereira (PRT), Chaddock (XRG), Grmay (MTN), Benetseder (UBG) and Moren (AMO) formed the day's break. The group worked well together.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Forestbreak.jpg
The break makes its way up the cobbled forest road

In fact, the group worked so well that tehy began to open out a threatening lead. Raleigh worked hard on the front of the peloton to bring the gap down, but the other teams didn't want to cooperate. With 20km to go the break held a lead of two and a half minutes. With the other teams refusing to play ball, Sparling put in a desperate attack to try to bridge the gap to the break.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Sparlingattack.jpg

This spurred the peloton back into life. Sparling was caught in no man's land between the break and the bunch and was eventually swept up with 3.5km to go. But the break stayed managed to stay clear.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Breaksprintspelotonchases.jpg
The break approaches the finishing straight

Grmay lead the break into the finishing straight and led out the sprint, but it was Benetseder who took the win, pipping Moren on the line.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Benetsederwins.jpg
Benetseder wins

Meanwhile behind, woeful organisation from Raleigh meant that Sulzberger got blocked in and finished way down the field. The day had finished as badly as it started.

Mid-March Newsflash

After the Trofej Porec, Hampton was sent to the hospital to get checked out. The devastating news for the team was that he will be out until the middle of May. This will be a big blow to the team, who are now down to a squad of just 11 riders for the time being.

This undulating ciruit race is set in Italy and has been going since 1985. Enrico Battaglin has won the last two editions.

With a supposedly flat parcours, Eeckhout, Napolitano, Bagdonas, Kern and Smolen were the bookies favourites before the race began, but we had our eye on punchier riders like Pellizotti and Betancur.

A number of our riders were still getting up to race fitness. Sulzberger would be our man for the sprints and we were hoping Oliphant's strength on the hills could prove useful if the going go tough. Either way, the team were determined to make up for the poor showing at Porec last week.

Race report

The race began with another incident for Raleigh, as our sprint man Sulzberger punctured early on.

Janssen paces Sulzberger back to the bunch

Up ahead however, things were looking more promising, as Holohan made it into the breakaway with Van Leberghe (JVC) and Blanco (EFG). We were surprised the peloton let a rider of Blanco's quality into the escape.

Meanwhile Sulzberger and Janssen made it back to the bunch safely.

Panic over, Bernie and Janssen make it back to the peloton

The breakaway trio worked very well together and still had a lead of a minute and a half with just 15km. Holohan drove things on to try to make the break stick all the way to the line.

The escape's chances increased substantially when a crash in the bunch behind interrupted the chase. Could Raleigh be heading for the podium or even a win?

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Crash.jpg
The day was marred by a big crash in the bunch

Oliphant and Sulzberger took advantage of the confusion the crash caused by following a small break of dangerous riders including Pellizotti and Bagdonas. Up front, however, the trio were looking assured of staying away. Holohan moved neatly onto Blanco's wheel as the sprint began.

But Blanco was too strong for both Holohan and Van Leberghe in the end. Holohan was still delighted with his third place however.

Meanwhile Oliphant took 7th and Sulzberger 9th to complete a great day for the team.

So unlucky for Hampton Sad

But lets hope that Holohan's third place cheered him up a bit Wink
