GP de Besseges

Vernie Kunze:
Playboy Project II has had a tough GP de Bessege. After high flying in the top ten in Marseille, we've had our feet, knees, hips and elbows brought back firmly onto the tarmac in Bessege. The positive is that we've improved as the race has gone on. The downside is that we were so far off the mark at the beginning, that it hasn't really mattered.

Manfred clung on to 83rd in the first sprint of the GP, and even by the end could only manage 46th on a stage where 80 riders were held up in a crash (including Seppo Hjerpe and Ion Podgaetschii who hit the road).

On a better note, Jerry got into a break on stage 2, and managed to collect some 36pts towards the KoM classification, putting him third overall, which is promising.

All in all though, its been a disappointing wake-up call from realism, hopefully we can further improve.

Matty Vanderjeugt 48th GC
Jerry Heng-Suam 3rd KoM

Official Press Release

Despite our highly commendable early season showing and sound sporting plans, the ASO have denied our wildcard applications to the Tour of Oman, Tour of Qatar and the Criterium International. To say that the management and the riders are severely disappointed would be a major understatement, as this rejection has a huge impact on the fulfilment of our season goals. We have, however, managed to fill in the vacancies in our calender with other races, and we will strive even harder to bring about more success in those races.

Vuelta ciclista a Mallorca

Ernesto Baretto:
Well, we have failed in our goal of wearing the leader's jersey

Mallorca has given us a hard time. Great as the guys are, they just can't keep up with the likes of David Moreno and Nick Nuyens when the road gets bumpy. Still, good work guys, keep trying!

GP Méditeranéen

Hajek Semak:
We took no sprinter to the completely flat GP Méd, so it was always going to be a tough ask to come away from it with anything. The race was really about finding form, and although Cliff Van Schoomhooven and Arkadios Kesdoglou managed to get into breaks, none of our aggressiveness came to fruition. In the defining stage of the race, bad positioning meant that the best we could manage was Rachid Ganuchi in 56th. Overall a below par performance.

So frustrating! Just not our tour I’m afraid, but we’ll be back! #damn #PBY

Word in the peloton is that Playboy are unhappy at current progress. A bit harsh in my opinion, but there we have it.

Official Press Release

Our sponsors, Playboy Magazine, have expressed their grave disappointment at the team's lack of participation in either the Tours of Qatar or Oman. Whilst the management has been understanding of the fact that the team had little control over these decisions, it has regretted to inform Tommeke and myself that the team must attempt to compensate for this loss of exposure with results and coverage in it's new calendar.

Although the current situation is not ideal, we are confident that we can requite our sponsor's faith in us at the upcoming Volta a regio do Algarve, to which we are taking a strong team. We are confident that current results are indicative of a learning curve, and that although it may take considerable time for the riders to achieve their full potential, their full potential could take them to the very highest level of the sport.

Volta a regio do Algarve

Vernie Kunze:
Algarve has really been a race that's bucked us and carried us stage by stage. The first couple of days were hell, with mechanicals, falls and a few errors of judgement among our riders meaning that by stage 3 the best placed man in our team was 4'30" down on the leader. Stage 3 however, became interesting.

At the beginning of the day, we'd discussed how everyone wanted to approach the day. Matty Vanderjeugt said he was feeling good, and wanted to try his legs in the breakaway. Well, without much difficulty, a group of 4 established itself, including Matt.

img24.imageshack.us/img24/1268/algarve1.jpg

The second half of the stage contained a large number of small climbs, several of which were categorised, and as the kilometres ticked down the group of 4 were still increasing their lead over the peloton.
At 60km, the group had a 10min advantage, but decreasing. We were anxious for Matty to have a shot at the overall classification, and to his credit whilst his companions attacked Matty kept a very clear head and kept pulling consistently to minimise his losses.

The quartet were able to hold off the peloton, though Matty finished last of the group. We were left biting our nails and waiting for the arrival of the mass sprint.

img23.imageshack.us/img23/936/algarve2s.jpg

Sadly, the peloton raced in at 3'30" down, leaving Matt out of yellow by 1'26", but resplendent for his efforts in the white jersey for Best Young Rider and 5th position overall.

The following day though too, contained a series of climbs before the finish, and despite his best efforts, Matty was caught out of position on a narrow climb and gapped by the race favourites.

Despite the best efforts of Øle Høle and Tommy Bøje-Gensby, the peloton remained just out of reach (by all of 15m) resulting in a 2' time gap to the stage winner.

We ended the Volta a Algarve bemoaning our inexperience, with Matty Vanderjeugt ending up in 30th position in the general classification. The boys showed flashes of brilliance throughout the 5 days, and will only develop. We are confident and hopeful.

Tour du Var

Ernesto Baretto:
Once again, we were plagued by bouts of Konstantin Suitsou and Nick Nuyens, not to mention a brief attack of the LL Sanchez. The guys were plucky, and Savernio Quacquarini managed 29th overall, but there's still a long way to go.

Tour of Malaysia

Ernesto Baretto:
Manfred Sys has definitely improved his sprinting since the beginning of the month. Whether it's form, confidence, or a little bit more patience, he's right on the cusp of netting himself some decent results. Unfortunately, he couldn't quite break in to the top 10 in Malaysia, peaking at 11th.
Our climbers still have a lot to learn. Erling was highest placed on the race's one mountain, finishing the Tour in 30th overall. We finally look fit, and Edik and Øle were putting in some good shows in breakaways, which is promising for the coming Northern Classics.

Vuelta a Murcia

Hajek Semak:
With a race consisting of a mountain and prologue, it was always going to be one for the climbers. Thankfully we took a team capable of climbing, and they managed to launch Stephan Lambooij into the front group on stage 1. Stephan couldn't quite hold onto the likes of Moncoutie or Duarte, and rode 13th with a group containing Jose Herrada and David de la Fuente.
Despite downplaying his own chances, Stephan was able to maintain the gap to his rivals in the short ITT, leaving his position unchanged at the end of the race.

img404.imageshack.us/img404/9251/pbd.png

We are pleased to announce an agreement with Stradalli Cycles!
The little known bike company is taking the opportunity to test and improve it's bikes at the top level of the sport, whilst Playboy Project will hope to see its riders benefit from high quality carbon frames and parts.

Today, Playboy held a presentation in San Marino of the bikes that the team would be using over the remainder of the season, with a support crew of its own staff.
