Picking a patriotic one for me it was stage 15 of the 2009 Tour when a sleepy race finally exploded in Verbier. It wasn't Contador's emphatic win but Wiggins 5th place on the stage and the confirmation that an Englishman could actually climb a mountain with the best. He had shown promising signs earlier in the race of course but when the race kicked off this confirmed it.

Until then English riders in the Tour were limited to prologue punts ala Boardman or Cav sprints - I love the high mountains and it was a revelation to have a home rider to cheer during them and something I never expected to see.

Alongside that was Garmin's and particularlyVande Velde's unselfish support of this emerging performance - he was the leader on paper but he buried himself for the team.
