Race Review

After 10 stages Peter Sagan gets to pull on the red jersey
instead of his Slovakian road race champion jersey for what could be a
tricky flat stage with a nice little hill coming near the finish.

A 6 man breakaway jump away from the gun.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Start%2011/2.jpg

At the only KoM climb they lead by 5 minutes.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Start%2011/3.jpg

The gap is cut to 3 as they roll through the sprint point.

As we reach the climb before the finish Vincenzo Nibali attacks!
It catches all the favourites off guard as Nibali bridges the gap up
to the morning breakaway and continues to ride past them.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Start%2011/5.jpg

Nibali has made a sensational move.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Start%2011/6.jpg

Outplayed, outsmarted, and outwitted his competitors,
Nibali not only wins the stage he takes the pink jersey back!

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Start%2011/7.jpg

The race for 2nd features Farrar, Cunego, Sagan, and Goss.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Start%2011/8.jpg

Cunego beats Matthew Goss, Stefano Garzelli, and then Peter Sagan.
It looks like Cunego will be Sagan's biggest threat here in Italy
for his Quest For History.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 12

Race Review

Another hilly stage is ahead with Sagan marked as one of the favourites
but Cunego is considered the top favourite.
Also should be interesting to see how Liquigas handles having Nibali back in the pink jersey with Sagan looking to increase his lead in the points contest.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/1.jpg

A large breakaway manages to get away with 10 riders.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/2.jpg

And they ride through the sprint point taking out the possible points
for Sagan and/or his closest rival Cunego.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/3.jpg

With the breakaway continuing to hold their lead,
Peter Sagan decides to attack away. 60kms to go.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/4.jpg

The category 2 climb splits the breakaway up,
but they are still 10 minutes in the lead once they go over the top.
Sagan sits 3 minutes in front of the peloton,
7 minutes behind the front of the breakaway.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/5.jpg

The final two climbs rip the breakaway open even more,
until it leaves Miguel Angel Rubiano, Luca Mazzanti, and Jérémy Roy.
And as the top the final climb it is clear one of them will take a brilliant win.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/6.jpg

The breakaway spoils the party as Miguel Angel Rubiano wins
in front of Jérémy Roy (2nd) and Luca Mazzanti (3rd).

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/7.jpg

Behind them is Ángel Vicioso and Juan Manuel Gárate.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/8.jpg

Then three more breakaway riders, not many points are going
to be available when Sagan comes through.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/9.jpg

But that won't matter either as he gets caught on the downhill by the GC guys. However there is one big name missing from this group...

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2012/10.jpg

Damiano Cunego missed out on the move of the day! After clearly being the strongest in the mountains a few days ago he loses 1'18" to Nibali.
Sagan finishes 24th and gets nothing for his efforts today,
but neither did Cunego so today goes down as a draw.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 13

Race Review

Many people dread the 'unlucky' stage 13,
but as a manager I'm not one of them.
I was happily born on Friday the 13 so '13' is my lucky number.
Some Examples below.

Will Peter Sagan have the same lucky results?

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/1.jpg

Liquigas tries everything to get a man in the breakaway
so we wouldn't have to chase today but it just didn't happen today.
But lucky for us Garmin and Lampre took up the chase without hassle.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/2.jpg

They kept the eventual 5 man breakaway in their sights at 3 minutes throughout the day as you can see them riding through the sprint point.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/3.jpg

And with 6kms to go they make the catch.
Sagan is struggling to find a wheel.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/4.jpg

Goss gets a train on the right with most of the favourites,
Sagan is out of position after missing out on that train.
So Liquigas improvises with Eros Capecchi telling Sagan to grab on.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/5.jpg

And Capecchi, who is here to help Nibali in the mountains,
gives Sagan an unbelievable lead out.
Goss is in shock as he now has to kick early.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/6.jpg

Sagan is the last rider to kick and is in the lead!

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/7.jpg

Ventoso is coming strong, can Sagan hold him off?

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/8.jpg

Of course he can, he is Peter Sagan!
His 2nd stage win in convincing fashion.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2013/9.jpg

Nibali is proud of his young sprinter,
can Liquigas hold the pink and red jersey all the way to the finish?

Giro d'Italia - Stage 16

Rapid Recap

Stage 14:

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage14-Profile.jpg

The mountains aren't very friendly to the sprinter but Sagan is out on a mission to capture his points jersey. And really the only way for Peter to pick up points in the mountains is to put himself out there in the breakaway. Which he did and collected 8 points at the sprint point, uncontested. From there the race turned over to the overall favourites. Nibali doesn't have a good day
and struggles to the finish after losing contact early in the climb.

The stage winner goes Hubert Dupont, who survives a long day in the breakaway to beat Bauke Mollema. Sagan drops rather early to save energy for tomorrow's stage, while Rigoberto Uran leads the GC guys home. In terms of the points race Sagan takes 8 points to Cunego's 3, so advantage Peter.

Stage 15:

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage15-Profile.jpg

Sagan was on the move early once again in hopes of just grabbing a few points today. And once again he was successful as he picked up the 8 points at the sprint point before the breakaway was pulled back at the start of the final climb.

Vincenzo Nibali, along with the other GC favourites, give Rigoberto Uran all he can handle but his strong Sky team pulls everything back in time.
Nibali is completely drained and is dropped near the top.
Which leads up to a strong sprint by Uran to claim the stage win
and possible the overall victory with just 6 stages left.
However for Sagan's sake the name that finishes 2nd is the bigger news, the man he is trying to beat for the points jersey Damiano Cunego. Not what he want as the Lampre climber gains 12 points on the Slovakian sprinter.

Race Review

Sagan isn't safe in red just yet as there are 3 mountain, 1 ITT,
and just 1 flat stage left following this final hilly route today.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/1.jpg

It's a pretty tough hilly stage so Sagan will take his chances in the breakaway for a third straight day. It certainly hasn't been easy for Sagan to pick up his first GT points contest.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/2.jpg

Sky is responsible for the pace making as rain makes its way into our picture.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/3.jpg

The breakaway is nice enough to allow Peter to ride through the sprint point to pick up the 8 points. Putting him 35 points in front of Cunego.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/4.jpg

As the slopes get steeper Amets Txurruka puts in the first attack from the breakaway, and Sagan is the first to track him. So I guess he is going to challenge for the win today instead of dropping back. The peloton is keeping the breakaway at 5 minutes with 25kms to go.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/5.jpg

Cunego hears the news Sagan is gunning for the win and he attacks with 25kms to go. Which is really the only option to catch the breakaway now.
Nibali reacts to the Cunego attack in hopes of getting some time back.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/6.jpg

But it is BMC that pegs it all back. Very strange that it wasn't Sky.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/7.jpg

Back up front Sagan and Txurruka are working well together as they hit the 5kms to go banner, trying to chase them down is Dries Devenyns.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/8.jpg

The peloton hits 5kms to go 4 minutes later as Nibali gives it one last dig.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/9.jpg

But it is no use as UK Postal puts him back in his place.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/10.jpg

So we switch back to the games being played at the front as Txurruka is wheel sucking behind Sagan allowing the other breakaway riders to get back into the action as Peter is waiting to launch his kick to the line.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/11.jpg

He waits till Dries Devenyns is almost right beside him ...

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/12.jpg

And then lets his legs do the talking as he powers to another stage win!

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2016/13.jpg

The peloton faces no more attacks as the make there way to the top.
Where Michele Scarponi leads everyone to the same time on the line,
And some great news for Sagan as Cunego finishes 18th and doesn't get any points today, looks like his earlier attack drained his sprint energy.
