Kyle Lewis - 2017

Early in the 2014 season this starts to feel like his rookie year all over again. The cobbles are certainly not kind to Kyle and the legs don't seem to be very fired up to cover the distances. His job on these routes is certainly not to be a contender, but instead is there to help his team.

Kyle continues to struggle his way through the start of the season, the feeling that I'm sure he had at the end of last season starting to get into the top 10 has been replaced by the helplessness of finishing in the 100s just like the start of last season.

Two more days on the cobbles, but we are halfway through April. The cobbles are done, and the hilly classic season is left. These rides should be better for Kyle from here on. Time to see if the now 20 year-old can show improvement.

Kyle proved that he was indeed a better rider than his early season performances showed. He put together a very solid Tour of Romandie and was 2nd in the young rider classification. His Individual Time Trial was incredibly disappointing though and had he better in that discipline he could have easily won the young rider and would have moved up near the top 20 overall.

In his first Grand Tour, Kyle Lewis started with a great breakaway in the 4th stage that would earn him the young riders jersey for a few days. The big climbs of Italy would just be too much for him still and he would have to give up his jersey to Nairo Quintana, who would also go on to win the overall classification as well.

There is a glimpse of what future reports will look like when Lewis hopefully starts to compete for wins, currently though all that would have ensued was more pictures of Lewis chasing down breakaways...

Giro d'Italia 2014, First Days

Our Giro starts in Greece, a team time trial is followed by two sprinters stages before an off day and a flight to the heel of Italy. Kyle Lewis gets his first Grand Tour at 20 years old he is the youngest rider in the field.

Day One - May 5th
A team time trial over the famous route from Marathon to Athens. Normally used for running but this time the Kilometers would be given to those on two wheels.

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S1P1.jpg
Garmin - Barracuda would have one of the last start times and let the young Kyle Lewis lead them out the gate.

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S1P2.jpg
The team does well, but comes in 4th, Kyle is the second member of the team to cross the finish line.

Our second day takes us on a trip around Athens, a day built for the sprinters, but a few climbs right near the end of the route could make a mess of those plans. Even the finish is on a short uphill sprint.

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S2P1.jpg
Our young star would be asked to protect the leader of Garmin - Barracuda, a nice easy day with little climbing.

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S2P2.jpg
Those few climbs at the end did in fact mess with the sprinters and Giovanni Visconti (yea an Italian riding for Euskaltel-Euskadi) would end up winning the stage. The sprinters however did keep the gap and end up keeping everyone in the peloton from losing time.

Our third and final day in Greece takes us from Korinthos to Olympia where the Olympic torch is kept while the games are not underway. This would give the sprinters another chance, but again rolling hills right at the end could play spoiler.

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S3P1.jpg
Kyle Lewis would again get the responsibility of chasing down the break, such is generally life for the young riders in the Grand Tours.

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S3P2.jpg
As if chasing down breakaways wasn't fun enough, a little bit of rain also would try and make the day better. This time around though the sprinters got their revenge as Alessandro Petacchi finishes just ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo. Garmin's Tyler Farrar would come across in 5th.

Day 4 is a rest day as the riders travel to Italy. Day 5 brings us to our first hilly stage, similar to the two races in Greece, the day would be mostly flat, except those rolling hills in the at the end get a little bit bigger in Italy, and the finish is at the top of the 3rd hill.

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S4P1.jpg
Kyle goes from chasing down a breakaway of 10 riders to jumping on the tail of a new break just before the climbs! Lewis would ride with Hermans as the pair dropped the third in the first climb. Two chases are on now! Can Lewis and Hermans catch the first break? Can the field catch either break!?

i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S4P2.jpg
The first break drops 3 of its members and gets down to 7 riders that sail clear to victory. Mauro Finetto of BMC would out sprint his fellows riders for the stage victory. But the field wouldn't catch up to Lewis or Hermans either as they would just catch the 3 riders dropped from the lead breakaway. Lewis comes in 9th! 3'21 off the lead group and 56" ahead of the chasing peloton. A handshake from Hermans who finished 10th and then the news gets to Lewis. He has to stay after the race for the Podium! He now leads the Young Rider Classification!
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/Lewis/Giro14/S4P3.jpg

A tremendous start for Kyle Lewis! How long will he be able to hold onto the white jersey? Can he stay in the top 10 overall? At what point if ever will the nerves start to break down the 20 year-old rider? Either way he will have two stages of very flat races for the sprinters before the first serious climb up to Passo della Maielletta.

Well done, but it will be very hard too keep white jersey, good luck Wink

Good job with Lewis, it will be difficult keeping the jersey, so good luck Smile

Lol at the good lucks... luck has nothing to do with it... only the computer does. I'm not playing with Garmin, not doing anything to affect Lewis. Him going on a break when he did was all of the computers own making. (Now... I damn near jumped out of my seat when he did)

Following a great Giro, Kyle comes right back in one of the toughest WorldTour events in the Tour de Suisse. Posting a very solid 27th place and coming in 2nd in the young rider competition. He continues to look very strong on the hilly stages and is improving nicely in the climbs. Some concern may be starting to come up about his time trialing skills as he does not seem to do as well as expected against the clock.

Kyle Lewis gets the best finish yet in his career with a 4th overall at the Tour de Wallonie. Time bonus's for sprints were the only reason he didn't finish higher as he finished every stage with a time of +0". The opening hilly stage gave him a chance to get himself some time on all of the sprinters in this race and finish well. He did claim the young rider classification for his performance.

The Eneco Tour didn't do any favors for Kyle Lewis, the cobbles on the second stage was probably the end of the race mentally for him. A hilly stage 3 should have played in his favor, but Lewis was not up to the challenge.

In the final tour of the season Kyle finishes off as a domestique for the sprinters on the team. His season was very similar to the first with a bad Spring, and then a good Summer and Autumn. The 4th/3rd back to back in Canada was a very impressive showing and his riding in the hills is vastly improved. We will have to see if he can get things going earlier in the season and be productive during the classics season.
