Demare is showing some quality. Hope he wins a stage, at least. |

A nice podium finish for Demare who had a steady ride throughout the race
I'm very pleased with him at the moment and hoping he can develop into a better sprinter But I don't think he will win a stage here as Kittel is way too strong.
Kittel is the same in my career too, it's only April and he has 11 wins already |

@ sutty68: Yeah currently, Kittel and Hushovd dominating the sprints!

Stage 4 - Ayer Tawar to Cameron Highlands
It is time for the climbers to make a brief appearance in the next 2 stages as Stages 4 and 5 will decide who will win the yellow jersey here in the Tour de Langkawi. Stage 4 isn't a very hard stage as it is a gradual climb but if the pace is high enough we will certainly see the favourites come to the fore on the second, smaller climb.
Favourites: Moreno (Katusha), Spilak (Katusha), Duarte (Columbia)
A 5-man break was allowed to go away today, containing Palomares (Andalucia). They steadily increased there advantage throughout the stage.
But at the bottom of the first climb, Project 1t4i and FDJ were pulling the reduced peloton along and it looked like the break would not be able to stay away today.
Katusha then set a very high pace splintering the peloton further and then Spilak attacked off the front and we sent Pinot off to catch him. It became clear at this point who Katusha were riding for, and we were surprised that they hadn't picked Moreno but I guess he had a lack of form at this race.
With 5km to go it was Pinot and Spilak on there own up front and they would decide who would win the stage and take the overall.
But it was a day that was marred with crashes as this huge one here took out most of the field eventually and unfortunately for us Demare, Geslin and Ladagnous fell. Ladagnous had to abandon with a sprained wrist which will keep him out until mid-February.
At the line, Spilak easily outsprinted Pinot for the victory with Trofimov (Katusha) getting 3rd. It was also a great result for Pineau to grab 9th on the day and went up to 6th overall!
1 | Simon Spilak | Katusha Team | 3h47'57 | 2 | Thibaut Pinot | FDJ - BigMat | s.t. | 3 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | + 47 | 4 | René Mandri | Endura Racing | s.t. | 5 | Fabio Duarte | Colombia - Coldeportes | s.t. | 6 | Luca Mazzanti | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | 7 | Pieter Jacobs | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. | 8 | Gustavo César Veloso | AndalucÃa | s.t. | 9 | Cédric Pineau | FDJ - BigMat | s.t. | 10 | Oleg Chuzhda | Accent Jobs - Willems Veranda's | s.t. |

So unlucky that Pinot had to come up against Spilak in the sprint, still a very nice finish |

Bit annoying really but Pinot did most of the work to keep a gap to the peloton as Spilak seemed to slow up whenever it was his relay so Pinot was a bit tired when it came to sprinting |

Stage 5 - Tapah to Genting Highlands
Stage 5 will be the stage that decides who should take home the yellow (barring any crashes) and with the display Spilak and Pinot put on yesterday then we should be in front a treat.
Favourites: Spilak (Katusha), Pinot (FDJ), Duarte (Columbia)
A 3-man break was allowed to go clear today but there was no one it contained who was really worth mentioning. At the bottom of the final climb they had an advantage of 3 mins.
With 15km to go, an elite group of 5 had formed: Spilak, Moreno, Trofimov (Katusha), Pinot (FDJ) and Duarte (Columbia).
The pace set by Katusha was huge and the breakaway had already been reeled in with 8km to go. Duarte could not stay with the pace of Katusha and dropped off leaving Pinot vs. Katusha!
But even the pace of Katusha could not prevent Pinot riding the entire Katusha trio off his wheel going into the final 2km!
Spilak somehow managed to overhaul Pinot in the final metres for the win! We were absolutely gutted but 2nd was still a great result! Trofimov came in 3rd.
(Due to my computer crashing before I could export the results, I have taken a screenshot of the Stage and Overall Rankings for you!)

It's becoming a theme in this story I hope to get a win before the end of the season instead of finishing 2nd or 3rd in every race

I really like your reports and FDJ is a great team for a story so if you keep this up, it has potential!
Spoiler Do I have potential?
And I'm sure your wins will come sooner or later. Katusha always sends an insanely strong team to Malaysia, so I think you're still doing very well.

Thank you! I have enjoyed reading your Dominik Nerz story too! Love the picture too I think I could get a win at either Qatar or the Tour of the Mediterranean, depending on the riders who go but we shall see |

Great team and choice and superb writing so far. That was very nice TdU and now you're doing superb job in Langkawi. Almost all stages you're close to the win, so it has to come soon, Pinot should get stronger as well so hopefully he can pull of nice GC victory. Good luck
Cunego I didn't know you looked like that, even more pleasure beating you in FiFa then
Spoiler Joking only

Good god, I do not look like that I thought this photo was a bit more popular. Off topic explanation:
In case you knew that and I just didn't get the joke: Sorry I just had to think of that photo when I was writing about the potential of this story.

@ Alakagom: Thank you very much , Pinot and Elissonde both look like they will become decent climbers when they reach their full potential! I'm looking to put Pinot into the TdF this year hopefully and if he can up his mountain stat then we should be able to challenge for a good placing in GC. |

Stage 6 - Rawang to Putrajaya Loop
With the GC all but set, we return to the flatter stages of the race with the sprinters coming to the fore once again. Demare and Geslin have picked up minor injuries in the crash on Stage 4, so they won't be 100% today when it comes to a mass sprint.
Favourites: Kittel (1t4i), Kristoff (Katusha), Lacombe (Spidertech)
A 9-man break went away earlier in the day but they were caught with around 20km to go, allowing the sprinters to challenge for the stage win. Unsuprisingly, Kittel won with Lacombe 2nd and, amazingly, Spilak 3rd! As I said earlier Demare was still feeling the effects of the crash and wasn't feeling great in this sprint.
1 | Marcel Kittel | Project 1t4i | 3h17'59 | 2 | Keven Lacombe | SpiderTech powered by C10 | s.t. | 3 | Simon Spilak | Katusha Team | s.t. | 4 | Alexei Markov | RusVelo | s.t. | 5 | Tom Veelers | Project 1t4i | s.t. | 6 | Oleg Chuzhda | Accent Jobs - Willems Veranda's | s.t. | 7 | Ian Wilkinson | Endura Racing | s.t. | 8 | Jonas Ljungblad | Team Differdange - Magic-Sportfood.de | s.t. | 9 | John Degenkolb | Project 1t4i | s.t. | 10 | Jaan Kirsipuu | Champion System Pro Cycling Team | s.t. |
Stage 7 - Banting to Tampin
Stage 7 is another flat stage where we should see a mass sprint finish, probably with Kittel winning again!
Favourites: Kittel (1t4i), Markov (RusVelo), Lacombe (Spidertech)
It wasn't to be a sprint finish today as the breakaway managed to stay away. Cozza wins just ahead of Poos, we managed to get 3rd with Elissonde as he had been dropped by the front 2 earlier in the race and finished ahead of the peloton.
1 | Steven Cozza | Team NetApp | 3h54'00 | 2 | Christian Poos | Team Differdange - Magic-Sportfood.de | s.t. | 3 | Kenny Elissonde | FDJ - BigMat | + 2'49 | 4 | John Degenkolb | Project 1t4i | + 3'41 | 5 | Marcel Kittel | Project 1t4i | s.t. | 6 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ - BigMat | s.t. | 7 | Sebastian Lander | Glud & Marstrand - LRØ | s.t. | 8 | Alexei Markov | RusVelo | s.t. | 9 | Guillaume Boivin | SpiderTech powered by C10 | s.t. | 10 | Tom Veelers | Project 1t4i | s.t. |
1 | Simon Spilak | Katusha Team | 23h56'11 | 2 | Thibaut Pinot | FDJ - BigMat | + 31 | 3 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | + 3'19 | 4 | Fabio Duarte | Colombia - Coldeportes | + 4'20 | 5 | Gustavo César Veloso | AndalucÃa | + 6'21 | 6 | Davide Frattini | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team | + 6'26 | 7 | Oleg Chuzhda | Accent Jobs - Willems Veranda's | + 7'06 | 8 | Ian Bibby | Endura Racing | s.t. | 9 | Leonardo Giordani | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | 10 | Sergey Firsanov | RusVelo | s.t. |

It's always nice to see a break succeed
But a pity that Elissonde got dropped early, still a 3rd place is always acceptable |

Stage 8 - Kuala Pilah to Jasin
Another flat stage which will probably result in a mass sprint finish and a win for Kittel.
Favourites: Kittel (1t4i), Lacombe (Spidertech), Markov (RusVelo)
A 3-man break went away today, containg Van Hecke (Topsport), but only really managed to pull out a 4 min lead as Project 1t4i wanted yet another win. Kittel duly obliged as he won another stage with Lacombe 2nd and Veelers 3rd.
1 | Marcel Kittel | Project 1t4i | 3h52'40 | 2 | Keven Lacombe | SpiderTech powered by C10 | s.t. | 3 | Tom Veelers | Project 1t4i | s.t. | 4 | Sebastian Lander | Glud & Marstrand - LRØ | s.t. | 5 | Alexei Markov | RusVelo | s.t. | 6 | Jonas Ljungblad | Team Differdange - Magic-Sportfood.de | s.t. | 7 | Ian Wilkinson | Endura Racing | s.t. | 8 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ - BigMat | s.t. | 9 | Steven Van Vooren | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. | 10 | Mathieu Drujon | BigMat - Auber 93 | s.t. |
Stage 9 - Melaka to Nilai
The penultimate stage of the race is slightly up and down but it should still come down to a mass sprint finish here.
Favourites: Kittel (1t4i), Lacombe (Spidertech), Demare (FDJ)
Only 1 man went away today and Lietaer (Topsport) did a brilliant job in managing to stay out in front. We don't know how he did it as we had most of our riders going flat out over the last 20km but Lacombe won the sprint for 2nd with Demare 3rd.
1 | Eliot Lietaer | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | 3h24'50 | 2 | Keven Lacombe | SpiderTech powered by C10 | + 23 | 3 | Arnaud Demare | FDJ - BigMat | s.t. | 4 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | s.t. | 5 | Jonas Ljungblad | Team Differdange - Magic-Sportfood.de | s.t. | 6 | Mathieu Drujon | BigMat - Auber 93 | s.t. | 7 | Marcel Kittel | Project 1t4i | s.t. | 8 | Alexei Markov | RusVelo | s.t. | 9 | Gorik Gardeyn | Champion System Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 10 | Jaan Kirsipuu | Champion System Pro Cycling Team | s.t. |
1 | Simon Spilak | Katusha Team | 31h14'04 | 2 | Thibaut Pinot | FDJ - BigMat | + 31 | 3 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | + 3'19 | 4 | Fabio Duarte | Colombia - Coldeportes | + 4'20 | 5 | Gustavo César Veloso | AndalucÃa | + 6'21 | 6 | Davide Frattini | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team | + 6'26 | 7 | Oleg Chuzhda | Accent Jobs - Willems Veranda's | + 7'06 | 8 | Ian Bibby | Endura Racing | s.t. | 9 | Leonardo Giordani | Farnese Vini - Selle Italia | s.t. | 10 | Sergey Firsanov | RusVelo | s.t. |
