Thanks all!

@valverde: Glad to hear you like the screenshots. I think your David Veilleux story has the best screenshots of all stories, so it's nice to get positive feedback about that from you.

Monthly summary - January

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_1.jpg
The first serious race this year was the Tour Down Under, which saw the Aussies doing great in their home race, with Michael Rogers winning one stage and overall, while his teammate Chris Sutton got two stage wins out of the mass sprints.
Tour de San Luis was for a long time looking like it would be a very close overall standing, but Daniel Moreno proved to be too strong for the others and took the overall by a quite large margin. The Spaniard also picked up two stage wins on the way, with Lithuanian Aidis Kruopis surpringly doing the same.
Langkawi was completely dominated by the French, and especially the Cofidis team. Samuel Dumoulin was the most successful man in the race, winning four stages. His countrymen Gallopin and Coppel also had a great race, winning two stages each with the latter one also grabbing the overall win.
We already know most of the things that happened in Calabria, while GP Marseille was a boring race ending up in a mass sprint where another Frenchman, Anthony Ravard was the fastest, edging out Stefan Van Dijk and Robert Hayles at the line.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_2.jpg
With Tour Down Under being the only WorldTour race raced so far, it's obvious that Tdu overall winner Michael Rogers leads the individual WorldTour ranking. Actually, this ranking is the same as the final overall standing in Tdu, with the exception that Sutton and Ventoso is ahead of Kuschynski instead of after him. The reason for it is that Sutton and Ventoso also picked up some points on stages, while Kuschynski got his points only from his overall position.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_3.jpg
Sky leads the team WorldTour ranking, because of Rogers' and Sutton's successes in Tour Down Under. Not much more to say about this, except that it will have changed a lot when we do this summary for March in two months time.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_4.jpg
The individual Continental ranking is lead by Jérôme Coppel, who won two stages and the overall in Tour de Langkawi. Chasing him closest is Samuel Dumoulin and Oscar Gatto, both multiple stage winners in Langkawi (Dumoulin) and San Luis (Gatto).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_5.jpg
Cofidis has opened the season best of the Continental Tour teams. I guess it's mostly because of their six (!) stage wins in Langkawi. We're in 7th place at the moment, but we hope that we can advance a bit during February.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_6.jpg
Michael Rogers' performance in Tour Down Under was enough to also give him the lead in the individual CQ ranking. The two Frenchmen Coppel and Dumoulin is also at the top of this ranking, while Calabria winner Kevin Seeldraeyers is just inside the Top 10.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_7.jpg
The interesting part here is to compare us to the other top Continental Tour teams. At the moment, Cofidis and Saur-Sojasun is the two teams who will promote to WorldTour next season. Those two has a quite big advantage to the closest following Conti teams, NetApp and Skil. We hope that we can keep this position and maybe even advance one more step. The most important thing will be to reduce the gap up to Cofidis and Saur.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_8.jpg
Samuel Dumoulin is of course the rider with most stage wins after his domination in the Langkawi sprints. Closest following is Dani Moreno and Jérôme Coppel, both with two stage wins and an overall win in two different races.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/month_1_9.jpg
Cofidis is the team with most wins, mostly thanks to Dumoulin, but also Tony Gallopin, who won two stages in Tour de Langkawi. Sky has picked up four wins so far, two each from Rogers and Sutton, and therefore shares the second place on this ranking with Katusha, where Moreno has been the main factor. We are standing at two wins so far, two more than we had expected. Pfft

Next up: Qatar!

In the last post I said "Next up Qatar!", but that's not true. It's still a day until Qatar begins, so we'll race here to practise a bit on the sprints. There is some hills on the route, but they are definitely not hard enough to prevent this race from ending up in a mass sprint.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_2.jpg
We're sending a squad that will be useful in a sprint train. It's everyone for Kittel, so we want him to give him good help before the sprint. Reimer showed good form by winning the last stage of Calabria last week and will be very important as last man for Kittel.

Favourites:
*** Feillu
** Kittel, Gatto
* Paolini, Sutton, Bozic

Feillu is by far the best sprinter on the startlist. The only thing that can stop him from winning this is bad form or a crash.
Kittel and Gatto should be able to challenge him, while Paolini, Sutton and Bozic all will be strong contenders for the podium.

The daily breakaway contained 9 riders. The most notable names in it were Lampre's Matteo Bono and Miguel Rubiano of D'Angelo Antenucci.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_4.jpg
With 50 km to go, three more riders tried to break away. This group included much more well-known riders in the shape of Paolini (Katusha), Iglinski (Astana) and Reihs (Christina Watches).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_5.jpg
Another 25 km's later, the breakaway was almost caught by the peloton and two riders decided to give it one last go and left their breakaway companions behind. Kolesnikov (Amore Vita) and Hester (ChWatches) cooperated well and increased the gap to the peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_6.jpg
Just a couple of km's later they were joined by the three late attackers and another rider from the early breakaway, Volodymir Zagorodny (Miche). This was the beginning of the end for the breakway, as they were caught almost immediately after.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_7.jpg
As we came closer to the finish, the pace got even higher in the already very fast peloton. You can see how stretched out it is on this screen. Fortunately, our riders remained in a good position, just behind the front.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_8.jpg
The narrow roads made it very difficult to form a sprint train, but we managed to do it. Surprisingly, Romain Feillu had some special tactic today and attacked from the peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_9.jpg
Feillu still held a quite nice gap with 3,5 to the line, but Kittel still had very good help from three team mates, keeping him at the front of the pack and reeling back Feillu.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_10.jpg
Feillu was caught as soon as the sprint began, and Farnese's Elia Favilli decided to go for a long sprint. Reimer still had a little energy left and tried to close the gap in favour for Kittel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_11.jpg
At the Flamme Rouge Favilli was still in the lead, as Geox's Matteo Pelucchi launched on the left with tremendous power. Kittel had to dig deep just to get onto his wheel, while Landbouwkrediet's Kruopis were coming fast on the other side.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_12.jpg
But through the middle comes Sky's Chris Sutton with amazing speed. Kittel realises that this is the move to follow and blasts past the others.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/gde_13.jpg
It's too late for Kittel though, as Sutton celebrates a dominant win. Kittel still takes second, just ahead of Oscar Gatto, who comes out of nowhere in the last meters.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_1.jpg
As you can see, it's once again everyone for Kittel. This time he also has a better leadout man in the shape of Kenny Van Hummel. The rest of the squad will protect Kittel from the wind, collect bottles for him and also try to set up a small train for him at the finish.

Favourites:
*** Farrar
** Rojas, Hushovd
* Kittel, Galimzyanov, Vaitkus

Farrar is the obvious favourite here, he is the best sprinter and will also be favoured by the prologue. The only thing I can see stopping him from winning this tour is a badly timed crash or puncture.
Besides Farrar, there isn't a lot of top sprinters. Rojas and Hushovd is the only ones who is at the same level as Farrar, but Hushovd might have to work for Farrar in the sprints and therefore sacrifice his own chances.
Kittel definitely has a chance to take the overall win, but it isn't very likely. The lack of top sprinters on the startlist is good for him, but he still shouldn't be able to challenge Farrar and Rojas in a mass sprint.

Stage 1
Doha Cultural Village
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1.jpg
The very flat race kicks off with a very flat prologue. It's so short that the "descent" from the starting ramp looks like a long descent down from a HC climb. Pfft It probably won't be any time gaps at all because of the shortness of the stage, but a strong start here and you'll have a good shot at a Top 10 overall in the final General Classification.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_2.jpg
First notable time came from Movistar sprinter Francisco Ventoso, who crushed the best time by a massive 4 seconds! Pfft
3'09

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_3.jpg
Ventoso's time was obviously very good, since not even his team mate and well-known timetrial specialist Rubén Plaza managed to beat it.
3'10

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_4.jpg
Another pre-stage favourite, Andrey Grivko disappointed today, losing 2s to Ventoso on the course.
3'11

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_5.jpg
Finally, a new best time! Thor Hushovd shows good form and clocks a new best time, beating Ventoso by less than a second.
3'09

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_6.jpg
Hushovd wasn't allowed to be in the lead for a long time, since Russian timetrial specialist Vladimir Gusev sets an even better time just after the Norwegian.
3'08

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_7.jpg
Another Movistar rider with a strong time. Imanol Erviti loses out to Gusev by a few centesimals.
3'08

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_8.jpg
A nice surprise for us, as Koen De Kort rides surprisingly fast today, losing only 2s to Gusev.
3'10

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_9.jpg
One of the big favourites for this stage, Russian TT champion Mikhail Ignatiev. He is fast, but not fast enough to knock down his countryman Gusev from the top spot.
3'08

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_10.jpg
Ding, ding, ding! New best time! Canadian champion Svein Tuft with a great ride, beating Gusev's time by 2s.
3'06

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_11.jpg
Our big hope today, Marcel Kittel doesn't have a great day and finishes on a quite weak time.
3'16

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_1_12.jpg
Tyler Farrar, last man to start. How's his time? 3'06! He matches Tuft, but is a few centimals slower and the Canadian champion Tuft will wear the leaders jersey tomorrow.

Stage 2
Dukhan - Al Khor Corniche
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2.jpg
Two words is enough to describe this stage: flat and windy. There's a good chance that there will be crosswinds during the stage, possibly splitting up the pack. We'll try to stay up front all the stage to avoid getting caught in one of those splits and then try to set up a nice sprint train for Kittel. After finishing second yesterday, Tyler Farrar is now hunting a win. He will be the man to watch today.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_1.jpg
14 riders tried their luck in a long breakaway early in the stage. The most well-known riders it in were Dall'Antonia (Liquigas) and El Fares (Cofidis).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_2.jpg
The first intermediate sprint was won by El Fares, after a tight sprint against Kochetkov (Itera) and Richeze (D'Angelo).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_3.jpg
El Fares was interested in the other one too and was the first to pull his sprint, but this time he was passed by some other riders. De Negri (Farnese) edged out Richeze and Dall'Antonia for the points.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_4.jpg
With just under twenty kilometers to go it was all over for them though, as the pack caught most of the group, but...

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_5.jpg
... Three riders left the other escapees behind and tried to form something new. Once again it was Mr. Agressive Julien El Fares who initiated this, bringing Kochetkov and Van Melsen (Verandas) with him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_6.jpg
The group never had any chance though, and Van Melsen was caught at the 10km-to-go-sign after leaving the other two and giving it one last try.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_7.jpg
A suprising move a few kilometers later, as the white jersey of Pierre Rolland tried an attack!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_8.jpg
Garmin-Cervélo immediately moved to the front to try and bring Rolland back. Behind the three Garmin riders we had built up a three man train for Kittel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_9.jpg
With just over three k's to go, we surprised Garmin and moved past them, making the sprinters follow our train instead of Garmin's.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_10.jpg
De Backer moved aside and Kluge took over as the sprint began, while Garmin were coming back again with Thor Hushovd leading out... Julian Dean?! Where was Tyler Farrar?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_11.jpg
Rolland was caught just before the Flamme Rouge, and Dean launched a powerful sprint! Kittel did his best to follow the Kiwi, while Farnese's Favilli were going fast on the other side with Oss and Rojas just behind him. Still no signs of Tyler Farrar!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_2_12.jpg
At the line it's the Spanish champion Rojas who takes the win, passing Daniel Oss in the last meters. Kittel didn't have the legs to challenge and finished 6th, while Farrar came from far behind in the final kilometer to finish 8th.

Good start with Kittel. Some better sprinters ahead of him, but the young rocket can improve his 6th. Wink

Thanks! I hope so too, and I have a feeling he might do that. Wink Here's stage three, with a very dramatic finish.

Stage 3
Camel Race Track - Doha Golf Club
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3.jpg
Possibly even flatter than stage two. It is reported that it might be stronger winds today than yesterday, so we have to watch out for the crosswinds to avoid getting dropped in a split. Rojas won yesterday's stage and is now wearing the golden jersey. Another stage win for him today?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_1.jpg
As always, a group of riders attacked early and formed the day's breakaway. Today it was 10 riders, with the most well-known being Latvian champion Saramotins (Cofidis) and talented Italian Rabottini (Farnese).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_2.jpg
Three riders were totally superior at the first intermediate sprint. Lambert-Lemay (Spidertech) won it just ahead of Oliphant (Endura) and Muraglia (D'Angelo).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_3.jpg
At the second sprint it was Europcar's Haddou who outsprinted his breakaway companions to take the points. Saramotins and Rabottini took second and third respectively.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_4.jpg
Bad news for Europcar, as their team leader Rolland punctures with 25 km to go. The pace in the pack is really high at the moment and the wind has streched out the peloton. Three of Rolland's team mates quickly drop back to help him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_5.jpg
At the front of the peloton we've got an attack! It's Roger Hammond who's decided to give it a try.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_6.jpg
He passes the breakaway and is joined by Vandenbergh (Katusha), De Kort (Skil) and a rider from the breakaway, Firsanov (Itera).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_7.jpg
With five k's to go they are leading by 1'30, and no teams want to take the responsibility in the peloton! Firsanov has been dropped by the other three and it seems likely that one of them will win the stage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_8.jpg
Two k to go and Vandenbergh kicks off the sprint! Hammond and De Kort follows, and tries to save energy for a last burst for the line.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_9.jpg
As we're approaching the final kilometer, Hammond launches his sprint! He looks really strong and De Kort does what he can to try and respond.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_10.jpg
Inside the final kilometer, and De Kort is on Hammond's wheel! He had to dig really deep to follow, so the question is if he has enough energy left for one final acceleration?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_11.jpg
He does, but Hammond is too strong for him. De Kort tried to gear up one more level, but was unable to pass the super strong Briton. Still, a nice second place for us!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_3_12.jpg
In the mass sprint for 5th place, Kittel plays with the others and easily takes the 5th place. Too bad he had a +5 today, when they weren't sprinting for the win. The peloton loses 55 seconds behind Hammond, which means that Hammond also takes over the golden jersey.

Somehow just saw, that you thought I had the best screenshots of all stories. Thanks a lot!

Bad luck with De Kort, I think you just started the sprint 300 metre's too late in PCM time, but nice of Kittel to win the sprint with the main group.

Also its awesome of Tuft to get back to his winning ways, back when Tuft and Symmetrics were the Top rider and Team in the America Tour.

Doing great....that +5 would have helped in mass sprint....but great stage with De Kort...pity he could not win the stage..

It was close for a stage win. Maybe next time Wink

Thanks!

@valverde: No problem. De Kort actually started his sprint as soon as he got on Hammond's wheel (500m), but even if he had started earlier it would have been impossible to beat Hammond. He was just too strong on that stage.

Stage 4
Al Wakra - Mesaieed
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4.jpg
Another typical Qatar stage. Flat as a pancake in other words. It is likely to end up in a mass sprint, but who knows if a similar attack as yesterday can succeed again today? Probably a mass sprint though.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_1.jpg
Once again we had a quite large breakaway, containing 11 riders. Most of them had already been seen in earlier breakaways in this race. Some of the already known names were El Fares, Dall'Antonia and Rabottini.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_2.jpg
Garmin-Cervélo felt the pressure of having the leaders jersey in the team and took the responsibility to chase down the breakaway.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_3.jpg
Inside the final ten kilometers we got a similar attack as yesterday, this time coming from Kuschynski (Katusha) and Gasparotto (Astana). Today we were more active and made sure that they didn't get away.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_4.jpg
Our train was obviously the strongest, as no other teams even tried to challenge us as we came closer to the finish. Gasparotto and Kuschynski had other plans though and tried a new attack.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_5.jpg
They didn't succeed this time either, as Kluge took over the work from De Backer and started the leadout for Kittel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_6.jpg
Kluge pulled aside and Van Hummel launched his sprint, with Kittel just behind him. On Kittel's wheel was Mandri (Endura) and Guardini (Farnese).

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_7.jpg
Kittel blasted past Van Hummel inside the final kilometer, but was challenged by Mandri, who came up alongside him!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_4_8.jpg
And it's Mandri who takes a surprising win for his Endura team. Kittel lost some speed in the final meters and was also passed by Guardini.

Better luck next time

Pellizotti2
Thanks.

Had some spare time, so here's the report form the next stage:

Stage 5
West Bay Lagoon - Al Kharaitiyat
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_5.jpg
The fifth stage is a very hard mountain stage with three HC climbs on the route! Nah, I'm joking - surprisingly it's another pancake stage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_5_1.jpg
The last men from the early breakaway, Galimzyanov and Ratto, was brought back by Garmin-Cervélo with just under 10 km's to go. We had built up our train just behind the front of the peloton and was soon gonna push forward.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_5_2.jpg
Kittel got another perfect leadout from his team mates today and was on third wheel with three k's to the finish, with Kluge on the front.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_5_3.jpg
Just as Van Hummel was about to take over, Dean surprised with a strong move on the right hand side! We wasn't prepared for this and Kittel wasn't able to get onto Dean's wheel immediately.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_5_4.jpg
Kittel caught the wheel of Dean and moved up alongside him with a kilometer to go, while Oss and Ventoso were coming on the left with good speed.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/toq_5_5.jpg
Ventoso is the fastest and celebrates just ahead of Kittel, who was the only one who could challenge him. Koen De Kort tried to pick up some bonus seconds and finished at a strong 5th place.
