Santos Tour Down Under

This year´s route in Australia

The first Pro Tour Race for HTC is the Santos Tour Down Under in Australia. The last days were already nice for our team with Matthew Goss as champion in Down Under. What do you think of a Santos Tour without the Australian Champion? Yes, that´s quite bad..because of that we´ve decided to sent Matt Goss as team leader to Down Under.
His lead out man will be Leigh Howard, who did a great job in the road race some days ago. Lars Ytting Bak and Hayden Roulston will bring them into a nice position in the sprints.
HTC-HIGHROAD:

The overall favourites
+++ Farrar, Greipel, Rojas
++ Goss, Davis, Cancellara
+ Ballan, C. Meyer, Cooke |

The first stage is quite flat so we´re expecting a bunch sprint in the end. The competition is very strong in Australia with Tyler Farrar, Bennati, Rojas, Greipel, Haedo, Davis and some more fast sprinters. It´s going to be a hard thing for Matt Goss to take a win there. Our goal is, to take at least one stage.

There was a quite big breakaway group today but no one of them made a real pace so the pack was able to bring them back easily. Especially Garmin for Farrar and HTC for Goss were working together.

With only 5 kilometres to go, the sprint trains were in front. Our team was amazing today with Bak making the pace for Roulston, Howard and Goss. On the right side came Omega Pharma with Adam Blythe and Andre Greipel.

The sprint began and Greipel took the lead after a great leadout by Adam Blythe. But with still 2 kilometres to go, the German was very early in the wind with Allan Davis on his wheel. Farrar was just behind them. Leigh Howard did a good job for Goss today but unfortunately the Australian Champion was trapped by his own team.

Tyler Farrar was the fastest in the end, overtaking Greipel and Davis with ease. Greipel was just too exhausted on the last 300 metres so even Goss could pass him for a nice 4th place. Christopher Sutton managed to get podium for Sky today.

Good fourth. It's still the begining, and I think Goss will improve a bit on the sprints. |

After a nice start by Goss yesterday we´re quite optimistic for today. Our sprint train also worked great so everything should be perfect for at least one stage win in Down Under. There´s only one thing, that makes me nervous. The ´thing ´is called, Tyler Farrar. His acceleration was just amazing yesterday. Hopefully we´re able to bring Goss into a great position to beat Farrar today.

The break was a bigger group today just like yesterday. The did a nice job in front but especially Team Garmin and HTC kept the pace very high in the pack so they were caught with 15 kilometres to go.

Fairly and Lewis in front with a high speed on the last 10.000 metres. Goss and his lead out men were in the first part of the pack.

Only 5 kilometres to go and our sprint train was just brilliant! Only Cardoso and Goddaert were able to follow. Omega Pharma and Garmin with Farrar were far behind us. Everything looked like a HTC domination in the sprint. But then something strange happened to our train when Bak finished his work. Roulston couldn´t take the lead as he got blocked by his own team mate Bak. Howard and Goss lost a lot of speed so Garmin and Greipel were able to pass them with ease. The sprint was over for our team.

Tyler Farrar took the second stage in a row in front of Sutton and Rojas. Goss tried to sprint but more than an average 7th position wasn´t possible after this terrible incident.

Stage 4 is the hardest stage in this year´s route. After two bunch sprints without even a podium we´re not that happy. Matt Goss is a great sprinter but he´s also not that bad when it comes to some smaller hilly sections. The stage final today could be the perfect one for our leader. Anyway, he´s not the favourite for the stage win. Cancellara or Ballan should love today´s stage but let´s see...

The break with Arvesen wasn´t really strong today. They were brought back with more than 20 kilometres to go, but still a nice try by them.

The race was completely controlled by Leopard Trek so far and they got some nice tactics for the last kilometres. Maxime Monfort was the first one, making a move with 8 kilometres to go. Lars Ytting Bak was trying to follow him with Matt Goss on his wheel. But the pack was too fast for them. Anyway, Monfort was able to create a little gap to them, before the last kilometre was reached.

Monfort looked like the safe winner but his team mate Cancellara came from behind and took away a really deserved stage win by Maxime Monfort. Cancellara was too fast for everyone in the pack and also Goss had no chance to stay with him.

Third place went to Popvych in front of Perez and Terpstra. Goss came in as 16th just one position after Lars Ytting Bak. Cancellara also took the overall lead from Tyler Farrar.

After a hard stage final in yesterday´s stage, we´re back in the flat terrain again. We´ve still got the same goal to win a stage, so maybe we can do it today.
The favourites:
+++ Farrar, Greipel, Rojas
++ Goss, Bennati, Davis
+ Henderson, Cardoso, Haedo

With still 40 kilometres to go, the pack was headed by Garmin, Omega Pharma and HTC. It was just the same everyday. Again the pack was too strong for the breakaway, so they were caught easily.

What a great view. The two best sprint trains were just side by side with 8 kilometres to go. Farrar and Goss were in brilliant positions so far.

The sprint began and Hayden Roulston was trying to bring Howard and Goss in front of the Garmin train but they were also really fast in the end.

Farrar was the first, making his final move while Goss was still in a perfect position behind his leadout man Howard.

But when Goss made his move it was already to late. Farrar´s accleration was too strong for us. Perez came on the left side of Goss but we still managed to finish on the podium. Great third win by Farrar!

Today´s stage is a bit tricky I think. With two nice uphills in the end, the sprinters might have some problems there but we´re glad to have Goss as an average puncheur.
The favourites:
+++ Farrar, Goss, Rojas
++ Davis, Sutton, Bennati
+ Greipel, Haedo, Henderson

Today was way harder to catch the breakaway than the last couple of days. Especially Pietropolli and Nocentini were very strong in the last kilometres.

Our team made the pace in the pack with Bak and Roulston at the front. As we had already built our sprint train, Tyler Farrar just took the backwheel of Goss today. The group with Nocentini and Pietropolli was still in front by 25 seconds.

Our team started the sprint early with Howard. The gap to the breakaway was getting closer and closer.

On the last metres we brought them back with Nocentini still in leading position. Matt Goss was on the left side with Farrar behind him while Sutton made his move. By the way, nice to see the tv cameras there, too

Too bad! Sutton takes the win today. Matt Goss came in with his best result these days in Down Under while Steegmans was able to beat Farrar for the third place. By the way, Farrar was again the fastest but Goss and Sutton had blocked him before so he couldn´t pass us.

Very nice 3rd and even better 2nd for Goss now! He's getting closer to a stage-win But even if he won't get one: 5th in GC and two podiums in last stages are definitely a success so far. Hope he can keep the Top-5 in final stage (or even improve thanks to another podium?!).. good luck!

Very close! Hope you can keep Goss inside the top-5 for the final stage. Or even maybe try and fight for first place again. |

THanks a lot guys. We will try to keep our overall situation. Top 5 would be great..and two podiums aren´t that bad just like you said. |
