Thanks for the advice guys. This bike is probably within my price range, what do you guys think?

DJP, that was in miles and feet. Here is the mapmyride map of this ride, https://www.mapmyr...ive_done=1 I did this on a heavy mountain bike last year, and the final .7 of the 1.7 mile climb is all gravel. It took me 10:10. I think thats an average of just over 10 mph if I'm not mistaken? Also, mapmyride says the average grade is 6%, but there are some incredibly steep sections. Veloroutes had the max grade at 15%.
jph: I am not sure about that bike, as I am also new to cycling. However, I'm sure one of these knowledgeable guys can help! |

The bike is your basic entry-level road bike. I am however surprised how light it is considering the price. My first road bike was quite similar(much heavier though) and it got the job done. The shifting isn't the greatest (although it's shimano) and I absolutely despise Kenda tires. I had them on my old road bike and are not very durable and provide minimal traction in rain. It's seems like a nice road bike to get you started and if you put a lot of hard work into riding over a year or two your parents might be willing to help finance a better bike if it keeps you motivated and active.

That hill seems tough. Gaining 160m over 2.7kms makes it quite steep. Sorry I work metric system to make sense of everything

DJP, would you say that was a decent ride considering the difficulty of the hill (steepness and gravel section) and my equipment? |

jph, did you purchase a bike yet?
I just finished a 43 mile ride over somewhat rolling train (crosswind most of the way) in 2:17...feet are very sore at the moment |

Not yet. I've found one on eBay about half an hour from where I live for £60, so I just need to persuade my parents. Still persevering with my Mountain Bike though, did 15km in about an hour yesterday, into a headwind and then on wet gravel (stupid British weather). |

The entire ride is a Cat3 climb according to mapmyride.
I would love to just get a chance to try riding uphill at some point, but there is nothing even resembling a climb here in Houston.

Same here. The hardest climbs are the "sooooo hard" Autobahn bridges.
Damn flat area in my living place.
Closest hills are the Harz, which have mountains up to 1000m but this is already a weekend trip then and nothing for a one day ride from here.
@jph: I don`t have the biggest knowledge of road bikes, but there was a similar discussion in the German community. The more experienced said, that it`s not really worth to buy these "cheaper" bikes. Then your normal bike is still good enough. It would be much more fun to ride on a good bike for 700euro minimum. An option would be to look foor really good brands and then buy an used one at ebay for 200-300euros.
It mustn`t be too old and should still look pretty new, otherwise it`s crap.
Not sure what brand this is for just 60 pounds but for this price it can`t be a really good one I guess.
I have the same problem, want to buy a cheap road bike as I can`t spend 700+ euros at the moment, but also don`t want to spend 2-300 euros and then recognize that the bike is shit.
So in general their advice was going into a bike shop, where you get a good service, can test the bike and maybe even some % on later bike repairs.

Found a Raleigh Sprint for £215.

Looks like a decent bike, and sounds quite good from the reviews that I've been reading. It's 16 speed and it's the right size, so I'm pretty happy with it. Now to haggle with the parents to see how much I have to put towards it. |

Nice bike. Specialized frame and Sram Red ($$$). The only negative thing i recognized is that the frame looks too small for you (or has the saddle still the wrong height?).

It cost me a fair bit :S But it was my present to myself after my workplacement
Well i have to agree i think maybe the frame is a little small... i still need to cut the head set a bit as its sticking out above my bar stem by about 20mm. I'm still messing about with position so i'm thinking of raising the saddle again, the angle of the picture doesn't flatter it too. Thanks for a relative newb to the whole bike building thing i think its turned out nice!
I'll try and get a pic of my brothers, we have the argument over who's is best. He bought his ready made, S-works roubaix sl2 saxo bank. don't get me wrong its a nice bike, but mine has attitude
