Well, you protect only Contador. In this stage, I would protect also one good domestique like Porte or Navarro, by this they won't loose energy very much, and will be able to help Contador on the final climb. Why don't you raise effort level in the last parts of the race? When the effort level blinks red it means you have to increase it or your riders risk to fall behind the group their in. I usually raise it to about 80 with 20km remaining and 99 with 12-13 remaining.
