A stage win and a top 10 would make this race a success for us. I'm still hopefull.

Finally Cav leads out Swift, but still a fail.
Btw, is it too much to ask that in a tight sprint for the win, the finish shot actually shows 2nd place?
If youre not going to show 2nd, theres no reason to show positions 3-7 either ...

Well, I think Ponzi is actually trying to be the last man in the peloton across the line on all the stages that he deems won't suit him. Not really funny playing that game though, is it? Risking it for nout. And I guess the CT sprinters extreme depth means Rowe manages nothing again. It's either a win, or nout. |

Well it was fairly obvious that Swift was second there, but granted really I do need to improve my shots a lot. I could have done some mb style side on shots from the replay in that one and on stage one too.
I guess had it been anyone else but Mohs then Swift would have got the nod but Mohs is fast and I think close ones favour the rider that takes the left hand line.

So basically youre saying you didnt bother taking any screens of Swift at the finish? I always take shots from various angles - and thats racing/screening live, I never bother with the replay unless something was missed.
If you look at the results, its fairly obvious where every rider finished, so why bother using images at all?
The fact is that in tight sprint for the win, what matters is the gap between 1st and 2nd, not the gap between 3rd and 4th or whatever.
It not about someones reporting style, its about basic skills of reporting.
And imo, Mohs won because he launched his sprint before Swift.
---
Swift has now been 2nd in 2 stages, as a British rider, in a British race, in the biggest race for my team. And on both occasions he has been completely ignored in the head-on shot at the finish - Stage 4 probably being just as bad, where you could so easily have had a good zoomed in shot on all of the Top 3, who were all Brits, and yet you cropped Swift out of it, so infact, the only finish line shot that does feature him is a picture where riders finishing outside of the Top 10 are more in view.

Thats a little harsh I think.
Smowz had a choice between showing the photofinish at the line or showing Mohs celebrating, I thought his report worked nicely, although, as he pointed out himself, I would probably have gone for the other one, as I try to get a photo of all the top few crossing the line, while you edit your screenshots well, and may well have merged both.
Different people have different styles of reporting, and I like the diversity that brings.

I was about to write that aswell... I think we should credit the guy for making some nice reports, which I really think he does... I don't think that turning ugly on him will help the motivation to make it even better...
I agree that it would be nice to see a picture of the sprintline, so we can get a better overview of the sprint, but that is something for the next stages to come, definately not something I will be mad about atm.
So KUTGW!

You could get easily get a shot of Mohs celebrating, at the same zoom as is shown, or maybe a little less, with the image being wider than it is. Just because theres a tight finish, it doesnt mean that side on is the only way to include the riders fighting for it, and a good view of the winning celebration. You say that I edit pictures well? Hardly, I use Paint, its done in about 5-10 seconds per image!!
Cropping for the sake of cropping, and therefore cutting out 2nd place is completely unnecessary. Never mind the fact that the forum automatically scales down pictures, so its not like having a full-shot picture affects anyones bandwith, and jpgs are small file size anyway. My philosophy is always to take as wide a screenshot as possible, because while the forum scaling it down may make the key point of the image a little smaller in the thread view, its so easy to view the image in full zoom, and also so easy for a manager to take the image, and remove the bits not concerning their rider, should they wish to use a smaller form of the image in a media thread of whatever.
In my screenshots from PCM, I have a minimum 850 pixel width in the 'target-zone' for taking a screen, and in replay mode that would be even higher without the hindrance of the Top 10 bar that appears, and the tabs on the right. The Mohs winning shot is less than 400 pixels wide, and the Stage 6 winning shot is less than 600 pixels wide. Both of them cut off Swift, and neither of them are likely to be cutting off Swift by very much.

And harsh? Oh please, if people feel it is wrong to criticise 1 single aspect of a Man Game report for fear of putting off that reporter from doing any more reports in future, then please dont feel that.
Im always happy to upload alternate screenshots I initially chose not to include in the report - if someone asks for it in the discussion topic. I always take more screens than I ever intend to use, and I never delete any of those screens until the race has been posted up on the forum in full. I hope Im not making an assumption too far, and its not just me who does that as a reporter.
But sorry if it wasnt obvious from the first post that I was asking for the full shot of the finish to be uploaded. The wink emotion was intended to do the trick, but I guess can be misinterpreted. I guess I was hoping that Smowz would respond with a new shot of Swift, rather than the rather blunt observation that it was obvious which position Swift finished.

Well, Im not expecting anything higher anymore And I need to have something to show that while extremely under par, I at least took something from my biggest race of the season.
ProTour teams have the Tour de France (or Giro or Vuelta), 100% Me has the Tour of Britain.
Oh, and to actually see how close Swift was, of course. All ive got is a vague idea and one very zoomed out shot that he nearly has won 2 stages. Or as Smowz put it, the data in the result saying 2. Ben Swift, on two occasions.

Just you on that one, I'm afraid. But that's the way I forumulate my reports. I write them as the stage progresses, and take screens when they're needed. Pauses come into play a LOT.
I've so far never had a problem with Smowz's reporting, and when I'm often at blame for things going wrong and stuff, I can't feel I can pick on him. Unlike Mr Perfect |

I take about 40 to 50 pics and jot down what happens as the stage goes on. Then I crop them down to about 10 to 20 pics (should keep the old ones like you suggest SN), upload them onto photo website and then copy the IMG files onto a word document and write the reports.
It is good to hear constructive criticism, I am looking to improve all the time. Though all criticism when a lot of effort goes in is a little disheartening.
In this situation, I do think there is two pretty good shots of the Swift/Mohs battle in the report.
This approximately 400 meters from the line:
and this with 200m to go:
But granted a shot like I got in stage one of Rowe and Mohs would have been a good one here or indeed mb sprint style reporting (certainly one of his strengths). Not actually 100% (forgive the pun) happy with the shots I got of the next two stages either. The reports are pretty sound but quality of photos is an area of weakness for sur ... SotD: I write them all up at once btw!... so sorries if I miss your favourite rider out.
The reports will come tomorrow at some point - maybe one late afternoon and one late evening? The weather report for Scotland by the way is rather wet predictably
rjc: Will you be joining us for some reports on the nationals ?

I had thought of bringing out the old style reporting, I won't be taking the British or Italian champs though, far too likely to click "replay stage" over and over again until I won them both
(That IS a joke btw, I never have, or will, replay stages to get results) |
