Bayern Rundfahrt

It may be a HC stage race but it has one of the weakest fields we’ve seen abroad.

Stage 1

A tough hilly finish yielded impressive results for our team, especially Tomas Metcalfe who came 15th.

Philadelphia International Championship

This is the most high-profile event of the series. Despite the presence of the steep Manayunk Wall and some lesser climbs each lap, it inexplicably seems to come down to a sprint each time. And it remained so as Matt Goss added his name to the list of winners while Adam Blythe managed to get himself into the top 50.

Beaumont Trophy

This kicks off a series of races in Britain including the Nationals, the GP of Wales and the Blackpool GP. It’s a relatively flat race comprised of 3 long circuits and 1 short circuit around the village of Stamfordham near Newcastle. Jon Dayus has great fitness as he aims for the GP of Wales and the Nationals while Adam Blythe will have a crack at the sprint.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-111.jpg

Dave Clarke followed the early attacks early on as they left Stamfordham.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-98.jpg

He joined up with 8 others to make a strong group.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-95.jpg

As it looked like they would stay clear, Dave sat on the back. Meanwhile, with 30km left Jon Dayus attacked from the peloton.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-90.jpg

However, when 2 other attackers bridged to him, they wouldn’t work so he sat up. At the head of the race, South African Travis Allen (who hadn’t worked all day) had gone away and Dave Clarke set off in pursuit.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-88.jpg

He got free from the others but there was no catching the fresher Allen. Dave began to blow as he reached the line but managed to hold off Isaac Spiers and the bunch while Allen nonchalantly crossed the line.

GP of Wales

This is one of Britain’s biggest and toughest races around the town of Abergavenny. It takes a long loop around the countryside including the tough climb of the Tumble, which may wear the bunch down, but it will be on the finishing circuits with the climb of Pen-y-val that the winning move will most likely go (and hopefully Jon Dayus will be in it).

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-112.jpg

He had to follow at least 3 attacks but finally Alex Coutts managed to get away from the peloton.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-99.jpg

The six-man group were altogether on the Tumble, where huge crowds were packing the steep slopes.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-96.jpg

With 3 laps to go on the finishing circuits round Abergavenny, the break had been pulled back and Dan Lloyd, Russel Downing and a few others had gone clear. On the penultimate climb of the Pen-y-val Jon Dayus bridged up to them. Then, on the final ascent, he attacked again.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0005-89.jpg

Yet he couldn’t get a gap and Russel Downing came round him in the sprint to steal the win away and demote us to two consecutive 2nd places.

Next up are the National Road Race Championships in Helmsley, North Yorkshire where the likes of Steve Cummings, Roger Hammond, Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas and Jeremy Hunt return to these shores to compete for that coveted red, white and blue jersey.

wackojackohighcliffe
British National Road Race Championships

The course around the stately home of Duncombe Park and the Yorkshire town of Helmsley is an arduous one, incorporating 3600 metres of climbing over the 180km race. Steve Cummings is probably the favourite in his new FDJeux colours while we are putting our guys behind Jon Dayus.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0007-63.jpg

Alex Coutts was once again in the break, which was much easier to get into this time.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0008-55.jpg

With under 40km left and the leaders still hanging off the front, Steve Cummings attacked the peloton leaving other domestic leaders in his wake.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0009-54.jpg

Jon Dayus tried to follow a bit later and managed to give the bunch the slip.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0010-38.jpg

Sadly, all the attackers were solo or in very small groups spread over the tough circuit and Jon could not link up with anyone. He passed and dropped our own Alex Coutts but there was no catching (among others) the dominant Steve Cummings.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0011-36.jpg

Jon crossed alone in 6th place while Alex held off the bunch for 7th. Not our best result but still very good.

Blackpool Grand Prix

This flat 140km race loops around Blackpool and it’s famous Pleasure Beach as well as some sections of the beautiful Fylde coast. Adam Blythe has hit a form peak for this race and is our designated leader.

Robin Sharman went in the break for us.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-100.jpg

They were still out front when attacks started to come from the bunch, led by David O’Loughlin.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-97.jpg

O’Loughlin came past Sharman and joined up with a man who’d been in the break from the start – Peter Williams.
Sharman was rejoining the pack as the sprint started; Adam Blythe was well-placed but Williams and O’Loughlin were still out front.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-91.jpg

O’Loughlin tore away from Williams but the peloton’s sprinters were catching fast, led by a flying Juan Van Heerden. O’Loughlin just held him off for the win while Adam Blythe pipped Williams to the podium by about the width of a tyre.

Crazy news from the Tour as, with 3 stages to go, Pieter Weening leads the race with just 3 stages to go after a 14 minute escape on the stage to Alpe d’Huez where Carlos Sastre faltered. Weening has just a slender lead but it’s between him and Cadel Evans for the win now. Could it be the biggest upset ever?

British National Time Trial Championships

The hilly course around Staunton in Gloucestershire has attracted a stronger field than the actual road race championships (Wiggins, Millar, Thomas, Cummings, Cavendish, Hammond, Wegelius, Hunt). It should be a straight fight between Millar and Wiggins while Tom Southam from our team has made this a target and with good form is aiming to get that other spot on the podium.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-113.jpg

Tomas Swift Metcalfe was first ride out the traps and he set a good time for us, eventually finishing 12th at 3”16.

By the time Tom Southam hit the road Chris Newton had a good lead. Tom did his best but just couldn’t beat him, ending a second or so down.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-101.jpg

Wiggins was one of the favourites and therefore in the last batch of riders, followed immediately by Millar. Paul Manning was leading at this point but Wiggins crushed his time by 2”03. He only had enough time to make it to the leaders enclosure before he was deposed by a flying Millar, who’d turned a 2 second deficit at the second checkpoint to a 29 second lead in the last 15km. He was the winner while Tom Southam ended up in a disappointing 8th.

East Yorkshire Classic

This race starts and finishes in Beverley, travelling out to take in 3 laps of a big circuit before returning to Beverley to ride 3 laps of a smaller circuit there. The hills are earlier on so it will be interesting to see how much it splits up. There is a good chance of a break so Alex Coutts, who is in form, will try and cover that option while Jon Dayus will follow the moves of the leaders behind.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-114.jpg

Alex did what was asked and found his way into a pretty huge break. Not that many people were working and with many teams represented more than once, Alex decided not to either.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-102.jpg

However, the bunch wasn’t working well either and as they reached the finishing circuits it seemed likely that they would stay away. With 20km to go Jon Dayus followed the attacks from the bunch but, while 4 did escape, he didn’t manage to get away. Up front it was a different story as Alex followed the attack from Matthew Kipling as the race ran adjacent to Beverley’s famous racecourse.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-98.jpg

Kipling seemed to have better legs though (despite riding on the front of the break) and Alex just couldn’t bridge up to him, an exasperating 100m behind. Thankfully, the group behind still hadn’t started working together.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0004-92.jpg

And that gap was not to be closed as Kipling took a career-best win while Alex managed to hold off the rest of the break, the attackers and the peloton for 2nd place.

Tour of Pendle

This race loops around hilly countryside from the Lancashire village of Barley. The climb of Blacko will be where the field splits and Jon Dayus will hope to capitalise.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0001-115.jpg

Tom Southam had held form after his objective of the TT Champs and he attacked to form the break.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0002-103.jpg

It was a 7-man break and they worked pretty well and (as seems the norm with these races) they got a very good gap. On the penultimate lap, he rode off the front of the break and put his time-trialling skills to the test.

i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll27/wackojackohighcliffe/PCM0003-99.jpg

It was pandemonium behind as riders attacked from and to the breaks. Jon Dayus was in amongst it but it was Russel Downing who seemed most likely to reach Tom. However, Tom’s time-trialling was much better this time round and he stayed clear (just) for the win.

Tour of Ireland

5 days through Ireland take in some of the country’s toughest terrain on some long stages. The team is a little out of their depth but we hope that we can be aggressive and competitive.

Stage 1

The tour departs from capital city Dublin to coastal town of Waterford, famed for it’s crystal. The day’s biggest obstacle is the climb around Mount Leinster but there are other smaller difficulties which could break up the bunch, with 2300m of climbing over 215km of racing.

Tomas Swift-Metcalfe tried to get into the breakaway but didn’t make much headway. A 12-man group got away and 4 went off the front as they hit the steep slopes of Mount Leinster.

That group was brought back with 20km to go and were quickly jettisoned as well as all our riders bar Jon Dayus. With 11km left, Sergei Lagutin led a group of 4 off the front of the peloton.

They got clear and it was David Moncoutie who won the downhill sprint into Waterford while Jon Dayus managed an impressive 10th.

All our other riders were now pretty much out of GC contention. It was all on Jon now.

We tried to get into the break but failed again. 14 riders managed it.

Despite the size of the group they didn’t manage to stay away. It ended in a sprint and Chris Sutton won.

Stage 3

This monster flat stage from took 220km between Ballinrobe and Galway.

It was another evident example of our inability to get in a break as 9 riders did, none of them ours.

They were pulled back and as many of our riders’ strength began to sap towards the end of the stage they were dropped from the peloton. Chris Sutton was the victor once again.
