Stage 3
Stewart didnt have the legs, so today Fleeman did his best to follow wheels at the finish - despite not being a sprinter at all.
The battle for the stage was looking very close with 500m to go. One of 100% Me's climbers Fletcher made an early move, but Bellis has led the charge back, with now Hammond and Thomas making their moves
And Roger Hammond takes the stage - yet another victory already this season. Thomas is strong once again, in 2nd - with Malcolm Elliott taking 3rd,
Fleeman takes 17th, keeping well out of trouble.

Fun to read something else then the normal stories, winning will probably be hard, but top 5 should be achievable.
Awesome screenshots, absolutely love the one of Fleeman attacking in Strade Bianchi.

I am following this one SN, as a keen British cycling follower it is amazing to see so many familiar riders!
Highly original concept though from the looks some sort of balancing probably needs to be in order. But keep up the story interested to see how the season pans out! |

Im beginning to get more optimistic now after the start of Paris-Nice. I think that whatever I do to the DB, the Tour Down Under wont work well - its too early in the season, particularly when the max team size for it is 6 riders, compared to the usual 8.

Stage 4
Onto the hilly stages! The profile suggests nothing too decisive, but it would be foolish to ignore that final climb. The provisional plan is for Shand to launch a Fleeman move there.
Break goes away and gets to battle for KoM points. Batchelor is well placed, until mysteriously abandoing right before the top of one of the climbs
Instead, Jerseyman Chris Spence of Wilier will take the KoM jersey after today
On the longest climb of the day, Sky put Froome to work. After initially causing some suffering though, the pace evened out again
The break was sure to be caught though, and with 27km to go Haynes, White and Brammeier attempted to go clear - they were swiftly brought back.
Into the final 10km, approaching the last climb and bam, Dan Martin sprints out of the group. Fleeman responds as fast as he can, finding his reaction time to be just better than Geraint Thomas
Newton and Shand also followed - but Shand soon find himself slipping away, and back to the pack
A second fierce acceleration from Dan Martin saw him again retake the lead into the descent, catching Thomas off guard as Fleeman attempts to pursue
Fleeman pushes as hard as he can, but is waiting for Thomas to sprint past him - and then try to latch on
Thomas duly does so but is too late for the stage, and can only watch as Dan Martin celebrates victory. Fleeman meanwhile does well to hold off Newton for 3rd
Mozley led in the pack at 31 seconds. There should have been a time gap - but it wasnt given.
Its annoying, but hopefully wont matter - unless Nico Roche performs much better in the coming stages. Fleeman was at least able to take some time bonuses.

Thanks, based on that stage a podium has to be a good target now
10th March
Some interesting things to note from the Tirreno startlist. As well as a head to head sprint battle for Swift and Cavendish - is the fact that Sky only send 3 riders. Cioni, Kennaugh and Wiggins being kept out of action - a challenge for them to ensure sprints, and to support Cummings for GC, assuming he is in form. Top 10 seems a quite realistic target for Appleby.

Stage 1
Plenty of hills on the route of this so called flat stage - interesting 1st bunch sprint of the season for Swift and Cavendish then. The last hill is worth a shot though, so Aplleby attacks before it - with 10km to go
No gap possible, and neither for any of the others who countered him - infact, it was Cavendish and Swift leading the way
But the problem with the hills is that they disrupted any chance of catching the break. They hold on, and Guernsey's Tobyn Horton wins the stage
Oddly, Swift and Cavendish vanished come the sprint - instead Russell Downing led the way, to be passed by Yanto Barker - and the gap to the break is closed. Holohan takes 5th in the bunch sprint, another Top 20 ProTour stage placing for him

Stage 4
Its the stage to Mende. On paper and in previous PCMs, this would be pretty decisive - plenty of gaps. Sadly, PCM10 brings up another argument in the case against it.
Early in the stage Rammler tried everything to get in the break, he had nothing left to give by the first KoM - and the break immediately formed after it. That break was doomed anyway, and on the penultimate climb an interesting attack came from Roche - with Mozley and Newton.
We waited, and it was chased back. So the climb to Mende. Shand launches Fleeman who attacks
Except, I now learn that the attack button no longer means such a thing. No ground is made on riders riding tempo.
And then the sprint begins, and Martin and Thomas fly away
Thomas gets the stage, Fleeman gets 3rd. He is proving to at least be the 3rd strongest in this race - but the only way to gain time it seems is time bonuses - and so he is still not in the Top 10 GC.

Thats what Im hoping - on current form, itll be very frustrating if anyone other than Martin, Thomas or Newton finishes ahead of Fleeman.

Stage 2
Another flat stage with some bumps in it, including a tough climb early on in the stage. In the descent of that climb, there was a nasty crash for An Post's McConvey:
Sprocket's Horton leads the race, but they showed no interest in chasing. Perhaps because the only other Sprockets here as Russell Hampton and team leader Wetterhall. Instead it was largely left to the Isle of Man team. As we approached the 2nd KoM of the day, it looked like the break might edge it though - so Tom Barras hit the front hard for us. On the climb in the break, Garmin's Green rode away from the other 8 survivors - of which 3 had been from the same Corley Cycles team
Bialoblocki, Luke Rowe and Cavendish all attacked the pack over the top - not getting anywhere - but ensuring that the break was caught - well, all except Green. So with 6.5km to go, its Green vs Barras - the gap is 51 seconds.
6km to go and a very interesting attack from Yanto Barker. He's got clear, and he can sprint well aswell, as shown in Stage 1
Just over a kilometre to go, Green is still holding on - but Barker is close - and Cummings is going strong as he leads out Cavendish, Swift and Dean Downing
Barker passes Green, while Cavendish waits and waits behind Cummings - with about 800m to go he knows he has to go - but its already too late. Yanto Barker has enough in the bag and wins the stage!
The fast pace at the end killed off Holohan, but while Barras' efforts did not benefit the team - it at least ensured an exciting finish.
A 3rd flat stage to come tomorrow - Cavendish and Swift will be desperate for a chance to go for the stage - while Yanto Barker has now taken over the race lead.

It's down as a flat stage - but might be a nice on to go for the breakaway in, its not particularly flat after all. Also worth noting that there seems to be an uphill finish - Thomas and Roche listed as the stage favourites. (Although Roche is clearly not in full form here)
James Stewart tried on multiple occasiongs to get in the breakaway, but it kept being brought back - and was clear he no longer had the power to keep up the attempts. Not wanting to miss the break at all, we took a risk and sent Dan Shand up the road.
And this time, the break stuck. Although for a long time the gap was pegged at 1'30 - roughly the amount Shand is down on Thomas. Shand ensured he took the 2 lots of 3 second bonuses on offer for the intermediate sprints, and the lead grew to 3 minutes at one point - before Sky, specifically Michael Barry, began to close it down
When the last ditch attacks came from the break, Shand went will them - but it was clearly wasted effort, so back to the peloton he goes. The goal now to make it to the finish in the main group - to ensure a few position gains from those bonus seconds
Into the final kilometres, not much happening organisation wise. Geraint Thomas is in the middle of the group, with the climb surely about to begin. Dan Fleeman has a +5 day, it would be a shame to waste it...
Very quickly a gap forms, and we're on the climb. It's only 4% but its enough to help Fleeman versus the sprinters
It is infact Dan Martin in the polkadots holding 2nd place on the road, but theres no huge accelerated sprint from him like yesterday, and Fleeman is holding him off well - but into the final kilometre, the sight of the Cervelo sprinters is about to hit the front of the peloton
The road has flattened, and even becomes now a tad (1%) downhill - and Jeremy Hunt is very very fast. But the gap Fleeman established was enough, and he takes a brilliant stage victory!
A stage win only gives 6 bonus seconds, but that is enough to deservedly move Fleeman up into the Top 10 - 6th place for him now, and 2 hilly stages to look to gap Hunt, Hammond and Newton and achieve a podium. Shand meanwhile moves up from 25th and into the Top 20 - now in 19th place.

Stage 3
We get a bunch sprint this time - a chance for Swift and Cavendish to really start their rivalry? Theyre up there, behind Lloyd, Murray and two Raleigh riders - Appleby is leading out Holohan.
Dibben and Wilkinson rush up on the near side though, catching the main train out. Holohan and Lloyd quickly try to respond, as well as Sigma Sport's Murray
Swift and Cavendish are oddly weak, as Ian Wilkinson takes the stage from Murray and Lloyd - Holohan in 7th

Stage 7
Back to the hilly stages then. Theres a long climb peaking with about 30km to go, before a descent and then another shorter climb to the finish. The peloton has blown apart on the longer climb - and we see attacks from Thomas, Martin and Roche. Theyve not got far though, and Fleeman opted to wait in the peloton over the top
A good move by Fleeman, as the trio are brought back - as are the last 2 remaining breakaway riders O'Brien and Mould - 100% Me's Welshman having taken over the KoM jersey from compatriot Thomas during his efforts today.
Roche actually drops right through Fleeman's group - to the group behind containing both Hunt and Hammond - while Dan Shand is behind that, finding himself lacking the legs in the final kilometres of the climb.
Theres a few downhill attacks attempted from the front group - Killeen has a little gap for a while - but Fleeman is content to sit at the back, conserving energy for a big effort at the finish
So onto the final climb - the riders have actually already ridden these roads, prior to the start of the previous climb, and immediately Fleeman takes to the front. No attacks this time, just raising the pace
Newton, Martin and Thomas are all for some reason sat at the back of the group, watching each other - this is a great opportunity
Despite this being uphill, the game wants to sprint with 3km to go. Fleeman isnt going to sprint until he has to, and as noone else is yet, he wont - but he does keep pushing, starting to drop the 3 Halfords riders that were tracking him
Fleeman waits until a gap is recognised between himself and the rest - and then goes for it. Sprinting away, the group behind make no response at all
It's almost a cruise to a line, but every second counts - although there is time for a sarcastic celebration "Where'd everybody go?"
Another great stage win - far exceeding expectations for the day.
Malcolm Elliott of all people takes 2nd place. Newton is 6th - and although theres a gap to Martin in 7th - its not enough to be recognised.
18th for Geraint Thomas, and he too gets the same time as Elliott, Newton, Martin and co - which is unfortunate, since he crosses the line 1'20 behind Fleeman!
Sky also mess up behind, a slow riding Augustyn mixed with a fast sprinting Partridge means that theres not even a gap registered to the Cervelo group - a major let off for them
It compound's Shands bad day, since his group is the first to be given the next gap - and his GC position doubles to 38th, but the crucial thing for us is that Fleeman was at least awarded a gap - to secure a podium placing.
Just a tad frustrating that 2 more seconds, and he would have moved into 2nd.

Nice victory, although complaining about the start of the sprint when use are using your own database is slightly amusing
