You makes me wanna play with Androni! KIU! Cool

I'm having a lot of fun playing as them. Being such a small squad, I can focus more on my goals.

G.P. di Lugano: 180.7km

In this hilly race, the riders will complete 10 circuits in and around the Swiss town of Lugano. The first 5 circuits feature smaller climbs, although there are steep rises, while the last 5 circuits will decide the race. Michele Scarponi will lead the Androni team and we will be aiming for victory. The start list is impressive with the likes of Cadel Evans, Vincenzo Nibali, Giovanni Visconti, too name a few. However, some of the riders only have a handful of race days behind them and are not in top shape for the season. It will be interesting to see which riders have the legs.

The race began on a steep incline, which almost immediately began doing damage to the riders. This was latter emphasized as a series of crashes happened, effecting some major riders.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM99.jpg
Szmyd, Weening, Samoilau all fell early on.

After the dust settled, a breakaway formed. The group of 9 most notably included Tejay Van Garderen (HTC) and Steven Kruijswijk (Rabbobank).

Back in the peloton, BMC did not allow for a huge lead, as even team leader Cadel Evans took turns riding tempo ahead of the group. There efforts helped keep the lead of the breakaway under control, and quite low.

While BMC helped keep the race organized, it also provided a launching pad for an attack at the beginning of the first major climb of the day. Rigoberto Uran (Caisse), Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil), Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas), Paul Martens (Rabbobank), and Paolo Longo Borghini (ISD) all took off and attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM100.jpg
The elite chase group catches some of the breakaway riders on the first climb.

This new breakaway of five riders quickly became the leaders on the road and had a 1'40" advantage at the top of the first climb. This had grown to 3 minutes by the top of the next climb. Realizing that BMC were fading, and the teams with riders in the break weren't going to chase, Androni began chasing, with Carlos José Ochoa moving to the front. By the third climb, Ochoa had single-handedly cut the advantage back down to 1.5 minutes.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM101.jpg
Ochoa leading the peloton up the third climb.

With the lead coming down and more teams contributing, it began clear that the group would come back together. However, the pace was taking its toll on the pack. When the break was caught, on the descent of the 4th climb, there were 40 riders left in the peloton. Androni was well represented with Scarponi, Bertagnolli, Bertogliati, Serpa, and Rodriguez.

Scarponi was riding very confidently, sitting in around 8th position heading up the final climb. As he was well positioned, Androni sent Bertagnolli, Bertogliati, and Serpa to the front to raise the pace. We wanted to keep the pace high to dissuade attacks until Scarponi was ready. Several attempts were quickly reeled back in as the group approached the top.

With 6km to go, the Androni team suddenly stopped working, and Scarponi shot out of the group of 30 riders. The shift in speeds caught many by surprise, as initially, Patrik Sinkewitz (ISD) was the only rider to react. He didn't have the strength and was soon swallowed back up by the peloton. Then, Lorenzo Bernucci (Lampre) and Benat Intxausti (Euskaltel) took off in pursuit of Scarponi.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM102.jpg
Scarponi attacking with Bernucci and Intxausti hot on his heels.

At the top of the climb, Scarponi was only 10" ahead of his two chasers and 20" ahead of the group. With only the downhill section to go, Scarponi knew he had make a risky descent in the rain in order to win.

Flying down at over 60kmh, Scarponi maintained his lead and entered the final straightaway still in the lead. He would be able to coast to his first victory of the year!

Classica Sarda Olbia - Pantogia: 180.4km

A relatively flat race, the Classica Sarda Olbia should go to a rider who has a fast finish, but it also strong enough to get over some small climbs. Androni will bring its two fastest sprinters, Alberto Loddo and Francesco Ginnani. With a relatively weak field, both should have a good chance to do something in the end.

Alessandro Bertolini carried out the first attack of the day, as he tried to create a breakaway. Several riders joined him, but the peloton would not give them any daylight. As soon as they were reeled back in, Bertolini set off again. But once again, he was reeled in. It was clear the peloton would not Bertolini make a breakaway. Not wanting to weaken our support of Loddo and Ginnani, we watched a breakaway get away without Androni being represented.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM105.jpg
The break of 11 riders/

As the breakaway slowly grew a lead, Androni wanted to make sure its lead never got out of control. Once race radio informed the team cars the break was 3'40" up the road, Androni sent Fabio Taborre to the front. He just rode tempo, controlling the lead and never letting it get north of 4 minutes.

Never given a chance, the breakaway was reeled in with 12km to go. Now, the riders began setting themselves up for the sprint finish. Loddo and Ginnani were still in good shape, and immediately formed a little train. Ginnani took up position behind Loddo, who had found Peter Sagan's wheel.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM106.jpg
The Androni team were in good position with Loddo and Ginnani behind Sagan.

As the riders opened up for their sprint, Loddo quickly faded. His weak sprint set Ginnani back as he had move out of the slipstream earlier then expected.

However, it did not matter, as today clearly belonged to Mauro Finetto (Liquigas). He was several bike lengths ahead of the field as he crossed the line. Ginnani finished in 4th; Loddo in 18th.

A dominant sprint by Finetto brought him victory.

February Review:

February, the first month of Androni Giocattoli's racing schedule saw the season begin in a successful fashion. Participating in 7 races, 5 of which were on Italian soil, the Androni team brought home 3 race victories (Trofeo Laigueglia, GP dell'Insubria-Lugano, and G.P. di Lugano). Additionally, the team had podium positions in two races (Giro della Calabria and Giro di Sardegna). All of these results were achieved by either Michele Scarponi and Francesco Ginnani. This speaks to their individual strength and great teamwork. However, we will be hoping other riders step up in future races as well.

This great start of the season should hopefully help the team build a foundation for March which has some important races for the Androni team. We have received wild cards invitations to two of the most important races on Italian soil, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo. Additionally, Le Tour Langkawi is an important race for our South American interests.

Rider of the Month:

Ginnani won victories in G.P. dell'Insubria-Lugano and Trofeo Laiguilea and a 2nd place finish in the Giro della Calabria.

Le Tour de Langkawi

To begin March, the Androni Giocattoli team finds itself quite far from Europe in the Asian country of Malaysia. Here, the team will be participating in a week-long stage race called Le Tour de Langkawi. Overall this is a race for climbers, as most of the stages happen on uneven terrain throughout the country. The Androni team (and its previous incarnations) have a strong tradition of excellence at the 2.HC race, having won the overall GC 4 times in the races 14 year history, including the past two years with Ruslan Ivanov and José Serpa. Additionally, we have won the points jersey twice (once with Loddo), the mountains jersey four times, and the team classification four times.

Serpa will lead the Androni team in hopes of defending his title, while Alberto Loddo will try to win the sprinters jersey.

Stage 1: Alor Setar - Kepala Batas: 230.0km

The first stage should be one of the few for the sprinters. Some climbs in the second half should cause some difficulty if the pace is high, but there should be no time gaps for any rider seriously going for GC.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM108.jpg

The race began under the heavy Asian sun as the riders all seemed excited to be in this exotic location. Those hoping to form a breakaway made their intentions known early, as a group of 7 riders went off in the first few kilometers. There was no real fighting to make the move as this group got clear of the pack quickly. No Androni rider attempted to join the break today.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM109.jpg
The day's breakaway featured 7 riders.

As the lead of the breakaway grew, Androni decided to send Thomas Bertolini to the front of the peloton, just to ride tempo. The team did not want the lead to grow past 5 minutes, as they figured an extremely hard chase would drain Loddo before the sprint.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM110.jpg
Bertolini controlled the pace in the early stages of the race.

Bertolini did not raise his pace, but the lead began to come down as the breakaway slowed on the first climb of the day. Given the make-up of the group, this was not a huge surprise. They went through the first mountain sprint with a 3'30" lead.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM111.jpg
The breakaway goes through the first mountain sprint without much hope of surviving.

Despite the work Bertolini put in, the chase still took its toll on Loddo, who, while staying in contact, suffered over the climbs. When the breakaway was caught with 8.5km remaining, it looked unlikely Loddo would be able to do anything in the sprint.

Nevertheless, the team helped the Italian sprinter to find the wheel of William Bonnet (Bbox). Unfortunately, before the sprint fully began, Loddo was out of energy and had to just roll to the finish.

While Loddo fell back, Jakob Fuglsang (Saxobank) opened up on the left and found himself ahead of the field. Just as the young Dane looked like the stage winner, the sprinters train moved up fast on the right, led by Thomas Veelers (Skil -Shimano). The speed of the train quickly overtook Fuglsang, although none could pass Veelers who took the win.

Loddo finished in 41st.

Veelers' great sprint carried him to the victory.

Stage 2: Butter Worth - Siliawan: 174.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM113.jpg

The second stage should be again one for the sprinters. In fact, it is the last stage of Le Tour de Langkawi that is, so we expect a competitive stage. Hopefully Alberto Loddo can improve on his sprint and get a top 10 placing.

A small break of 4 riders set off in search of glory at the beginning of the stage. Figuring the sprinters would want a bunch finish, and therefore not allow a breakaway to win, Androni did not bother sending a rider in the move.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM114.jpg
With only 4 riders in the break, it seemed doomed from the beginning.

By the first sprint point, 71km into the stage, the break had an 8 minute lead. This would be the maximum of their advantage as several teams took the front in order to begin reeling them in. 23km later, the lead was down to 6 minutes.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM115.jpg
At this moment, the chase is led by CDC and Bbox.

With 30km left, the breakaway passed through the 3rd and final sprint point with a 2'23" lead. They had done a great job in holding off the peloton for so long, but eventually cracked, being caught with 7km left.

The final kilometer of the race would be uphill. Androni knew it would be tough terrain for Loddo, but still wanted to give it a shot. As the sprint began, Loddo was in good position, on the wheel of race leader Thomas Veeler. However, again, he did not have the legs, finishing in 29th.

The ending climb proved to difficult for many, until Bert De Waele and Thomas Voeckler came charging up on opposite sides of the road. They quickly passed the field and today it was De Waele who was first to the line.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM116.jpg
De Waele's fast finish propelled him past the field for the win.

Stage 3: Siliawan - Banting: 160.6km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM117.jpg

The third stage should begin to reveal which riders will compete for the overall GC. A large climb that peaks over 60km from the finish won't be decisive, but should separate those who can climb from those who can't. The last two hills on the stage should see action as those with energy left will try to break free from the pack.

Initially, many riders tried to get into the days breakaway. Numerous attempts later, a break of 6 riders escaped. However, it happened so late, they were not able to build up the lead necessary to survive over all the climbing.

Disaster struck for Team Saxobank early in the climb, as team leader, Jakob Fuglsang punctured. One of the favorites entering the day, his chances were now in doubt as the peloton rode away from him.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM118.jpg
Fuglsang's teammates dropped back to help him, but could he get back to the pack? And how much energy would it take?

The peloton seemed to wait for Fuglsang, who was able to rejoin the peloton. However, it was clear the effort took something away from him.

As soon as he was back, Androni took the front of the group and pushed the pace. The team wanted to reduce the numbers in the peloton. Carlos José Ochoa took to the front and began working hard. Soon, riders left the peloton.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM119.jpg
The Androni team pushing the pace on the main climb of the day.

By the top of the climb, only 65 riders remained in the peloton, while the break of 6 was 2'42" ahead. They were caught on the first hill climb of the day.

At the top of the first hill climb, Jackson Rodriguez attacked. He was followed by Thomas Voeckler and Sébastien Joly (Saur - Sojasun). They managed to create a 20" gap.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM120.jpg
The three leaders on the road go through a Malaysian village.

The three riders worked hard to maintain their advantage over the field as the 2nd, and last hill climb of day began. At the bottom, Fredrik Kessiakoff and Patrik Sinkewitz attacked the leaders. José Serpa followed.

The 7 riders all came together with 3km to go. They would fight it out for the stage victory. Likely the winner would be the new race leader as well.

As the climb progressed, Jackson Rodríguez and Patrik Sinkewitz dropped back a bit. José Serpa was barely hanging on, but it looked as if no one had any energy to attack, when Voeckler started to climb away.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM121.jpg
Serpa watches Voeckler climb away for the win in the rain.

Serpa, summoning a bit of extra strength was able to fit to limit his loses to 12 seconds. Finishing with Kessiakoff, Joly, and Zabriskie behind the Frenchman.

Voeckler celebrates with the chasing 4 riding hard behind. Rodriguez and Sinkewitz are just around the bend.

Tuco the Ugly
Stage 4: Port Dickson - Bahut Pahat: 149.3km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM123.jpg

The fourth stage is the queen stage of Le Tour de Langkawi with two big climbs on the day. The first rises until 32 km from the finish, while the second goes until the line. A mountain top finish will cause significant time gaps, although it is unlikely overall GC for the race will be decided today. Androni will work to improve Serpa and Rodriguez's placing.

Large numbers of riders tried to get away originally, including dangerous climber Dan Martin. Bbox, defending Voeckler's race lead would not allow a large break escape. They only lessened the pace when a small group of 4 got away. This group included Laurent Didier, Tomasz Smolen, Stefano Pirazzi, and Evgueni Popov. Even still, Bbox never let them get a lead more than 2 minutes.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM124.jpg
Bbox drove the peloton on throughout the race.

The first climb of the day absolutely shredded the peloton to pieces. There were some minor attacks, but the pace put forth by Bbox was way too high for most of the riders. By the top of the climb, only 28 riders were in the leading group. Bbox had 4 riders in the group, including Voeckler, while Garmin had 3, including both Zabriskie and Kessiakoff. However, Androni still had 5 riders, with Serpa and Rodriguez still in good shape.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM125.jpg
The select leading group of riders begins the descent.

The major names missing from this group were Giovanni Visconti and Gustav Larsson. They were in a 33 man group that was around 40 seconds back.

With their numbers, Androni took to the front in hopes of maintaining their advantage. The leading group began the final climb with a 50 second advantage over the closest chasing group.

Having been protected all day, Serpa and Rodriguez were in good shape. With 5km left Rodriguez attacked, bringing Serpa along in his slipstream and helping his team leader launch his own attack. Dave Zabriskie countered and tried to follow.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM126.jpg
Serpa (left) uses his teammate Jackson Rodriguez's attack to launch his own on the final climb.

Zabriskie was able to pass Rodriguez and reach Serpa, as both riders had a 34" advantage soon. The two riders began working together in an attempt to maximize their gains. This forced Voeckler, Sebastien Joly, and Kessiakoff to react, as they bridged the gap to Rodriguez.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM127.jpg
Voeckler, Joly, and Kessiakoff reach Jackson Rodriguez, but Serpa and Zabriskie are still up the road.

As the final kilometer approached, Serpa and Zabriskie had maintained their advantage over the 4 chasers. Feeling strong, Serpa launched a final attack in attempt to dislodge Zabriskie from his wheel and win the stage.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM128.jpg
Serpa moves away from Zabriskie in the final kilometers of the stage.

With a successful final attack, Serpa would go on to take the stage win. An attack by Tommy Voeckler split the chase group and Rodriguez could not hang on. Voeckler was attempting to limit his losses. But it would not be enough; Serpa was the new race leader!

Tuco the Ugly
Stage 5: Johor Bahru - Bandar Penawar: 183.3km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM130.jpg

With Le Tour de Langkawi now half-way over, Androni's team leader Jose Serpa finds himself in the overall lead by 8 seconds over Tommy Voeckler. Today's stage should not see the gaps that yesterday's stage did, but with such a slim lead, Serpa and the Androni team will have to be on their guard.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM131.jpg
Serpa, being protected by his teammate in the leader's jersey.

A small break got away from the group including Cristiano Fumagalli (Ceramica) and Reto Hollenstein (Voralberg). As they got to the base of the first major climb, only 50km into the stage, the 3 breakaway riders had a lead of 3 minutes.

The peloton gave the breakaway quite a long leash, until Androni took to the front in order to control the pace.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM132.jpg
Androni leads the peloton into a valley.

Up ahead of the group, Hollenstein had broken away from his two companions and was attempting to ride to a solo victory. He had a 2'00" lead with 18km left and it seemed to be a toss up whether he would survive.

Just as the peloton was going through town, Voeckler and Fredrik Kessiakoff took off.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM133.jpg
Kessiakoff and Voeckler take off in town.

Seeing this movement, Serpa and Rodriguez tried to respond.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM134.jpg
Serpa and Rodriguez respond.

The four riders came back together up the road. Seeing no separation had been created, they slowed down and came back together in the group. This stop and start pace looked like it would allow Reto Hollenstein to take the victory.

With 2.3km left, Serpa and Voeckler took off again.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM135.jpg
The top two in GC battle it out on a little rise before the finish.

Today, Voeckler was the stronger rider. He was able to attack a few seconds longer than Serpa and get clear. However, the battle between the top two caused a series of moves from those lower down on the GC, bringing the entire peloton back, except for Hollenstein.

The fast finish resulted in no time gaps, but Reto Hollenstein was able to stay just ahead and take the victory.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM136.jpg
Hollenstein wins ahead of the field.

Unfortunately, Voeckler retook the race lead by 4 seconds due to time bonuses.

Stage 6: Bandar Penawar - Kuala Rompin: 174.2km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM137.jpg

Today's stage is relatively flat until the end. With an uphill finish, we should see some action. Being such a short climb, major gaps aren't expected, but Androni will look to go onto the offensive and regain the leaders jersey from Voeckler.

A ten man break got away in the early kilometers of the race. With no Androni rider making the move, the team got nervous as many of the other contenders had teammates in the break. Since the team did not want responsibility for chasing, which would tire out our riders in the process, we sent Alessandro Bertolini out to try to bridge the gap.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM138.jpg
Veteran Bertolini tries to bridge the gap to the breakaway.

After some hard riding, Bertolini made the move and joined up with the break. With his presence there, all the pressure would be placed on Bbox, who did not have a man in the break.

The breakaway had a lead of 7'13" when they went through the first sprint point.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM139.jpg
Bertolini leads the break through the sprint.

At the first mountain sprint, the breakaway's lead was cut down to 4'44". As well, Nikita Novikov (Itera) had lost contact making the size of the leading group 10.

With so much time left, and the lead coming down, it looked a certainty that the break would be caught. However, as the kilometers passed, the advantage stayed relatively unchanged. Bbox were tired and no other team took up the chase. Going under the 10km banner, the 10 breakaway riders still had a 4'20" advantage.

Later, as they went under the 5km banner, Bertolini attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM140.jpg
Bertolini was the first breakaway rider to make a move.

Daniel Martin, Giuseppe Muraglia (CDC), and Bert Scheirlinckx (Landbouwkrediet) were the only riders to react, but none could reach Bertolini. He would be riding to victory.

Meanwhile, further down the climb, the GC contenders started to make their moves as Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet), Daniele Callegarin (CDC), and Zabriskie attacked. Seeing a chance to make ground on Voeckler, Serpa and his teammate Jackson Rodriguez countered.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM141.jpg
The attacks beginning on the final ascent.

Just as a gap began to appear, Tommy Voeckler and Fredrik Kessiakoff attacked. These two made the right move, as their attack came on easier slopes and they shot past Serpa and Rodriguez, who couldn't maintain their pace. Voeckler and Kessiakoff joined Zabriskie and Callegarin.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM142.jpg
These four were riding in a strong fashion.

De Waele was able to recover a bit and reach the four riders, but Serpa and Rodriguez were empty. They would finish just ahead of the main field. Voeckler and his group were able to gain 16 valuable seconds, pushing the overall GC victory even farther away.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM143.jpg
Victory for Androni and Bertolini, but it also came as Serpa's chances for overall victory took a hit.

Stage 7: Kuala Rompin - Kuantan: 158.6km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM144.jpg

Entering the final stage of Le Tour de Langkawi, Androni's Jose Serpa was looking for 20 seconds on race leader Thomas Voeckler. However, despite the hilly profile, the team was unsure there was enough real climbing to find such a separation. With 20 seconds up for grab for the stage winner, a stage win seemed to be Serpa's best route for victory. Given this, Androni would work hard during the stage to control the race.

A breakaway did get away, with the biggest name being the Irishman Daniel Martin of Garmin-Transitions. He finished 2nd on yesterday's stage and clearly would like to win a stage. He was no danger for the GC, but with Serpa needing the 20 bonus seconds, today's break would probably not succeed.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM145.jpg
The break working hard to build a gap.

The breakaway had a max of 5 minutes as the riders passed the first sprint point. Not wanting to play any games, at this point, Androni moved to the front and began to push the pace. The team wanted to make the day hard for Voeckler and his Bbox teammates.

The last mountain sprint of the day occurred around 11km from the line. Unless Serpa was going produce an amazing solo ride from farther out, this would be were he would try to make his move. The climb is not very steep, so it remained to be seen whether he could create the type of separation needed to take the stage.

As the peloton, who had long since reeled in the break, approached the final climb, Androni remained on the front, giving everything they had for their leader. Then, 13km from the line, Serpa took off.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM146.jpg
Serpa attacks with Massimiliano Gentili (Ceramica) in his wheel.

Serpa was glad he had Gentili (who entered the day in 9th, +2'37"Wink made the move. He was hoping the two could work together to hold off the group. After the short descent, the two had a 20" lead over the rest of the field. The two worked well and pushed hard, but there was nothing they could do to hold off the Bbox-lead peloton as they were caught with 2.7km left. The two exhausted riders fell to the back of the pack.

As for the stage win, it went to none other than Tommy Voeckler. The race leader's team did an excellent job protecting it when Serpa was ahead, and he rewarded their hard work with a sprint victory. Cementing his overall win.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM147.jpg
Voeckler finished off the race in style, taking the last stage.

The Androni Giocattoli team came into Le Tour de Langkawi hoping to defend Jose Serpa's crown, but were unable to hold off an in-form Tommy Voeckler. The team does not Malaysia empty-handed, as they did take 2 stage victories, the young riders' competition, and the overall team competition. All in all, a good race for the team, and at a good time too. With two major races (Tirreno and Milan-SR) on the horizon, Androni will hoping to build on these early successes.

Tuco the Ugly
Strade Bianche

Due to bad weather conditions, there is not much information available for the race. What can be told is that Androni brought Francesco Ginnani, Michele Scarponi, and Leonardo Bertagnolli. Ginnani and Bertagnolli would be trying to win, while for Scarponi it was only a reconnaissance ride as the upcoming Giro d'Italia would ride on the some of the same roads 2 months later.

It was a hard, rainy day, as the peloton moved fast throughout, not wanting to let a break get away. The high pace, caused a split in the peleton about halfway through the race. The main riders missing out were Maxime Monfort (HTC) and Maura Santambrogio(BMC). For Androni, only Fabio Taborre was left behind.

On the last rise of the race, Rinaldo Nocentini attacked first, but this move was covered by Damiano Cunego. As soon as that happened, Ginnani and Mauro Finetto (Liquigas) countered but were chased down by Kevin Seeldraeyers. With the group back together on the flat, Stijn Devolder tried to make a move, but never got away.

The race would end in a sprint with Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil) taking the win just ahead of Cunego.

Ginnani was the highest placed Androni rider finishing in 12th. Bertagnolli finished in 19th while Scarponi finished with the leaders in 40th.

Tirreno-Adriatico

Our first main goal of the season is the week-long Pro Tour event, Tirreno-Adriatico, the "race of two seas." Our sponsors have said they expect a top 10 finish at the minimum. Androni Giocattoli will be bringing Michele Scarponi to hopefully accomplish this feat. Adding to the pressure on Scarponi is the fact that he is the defending champion. This will certainly be his biggest test until the Giro in May. Francesco Ginnani will also be participating in order to prepare for Milan-San Remo.

This race will feature the highest level of talent Androni have seen thus far this season. Participating mostly in Italian Continental races, the team will need to step up to the level of competition. The list of GC contenders is long, beginning with Frank Schleck and Damiano Cunego to Stefano Garzelli and Michael Rogers. Surprisingly, Liquigas shows up for this important Italian race with a weak team in terms of GC.

Stage 1: Livorno - Rosignano Solvay: 140.6km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM148.jpg

The first stage of the race should belong to the sprinters. With four hills in the end of the stage, it will interesting to see which sprinters have found the strength to get over and still finish fast, given the fact that Milan-San Remo is only a week away.

Being such an important race for the team sponsors, and wanting to justify the officials decision in granting the team a wild card, Alessandro Bertolini attacked just as the race began. Androni were definitely hoping a rider could get into the break today.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM149.jpg
Bertolini's attack helped form the day's break.

A break of 11 riders formed around Bertolini. Some of the riders who made the move included Fabian Wegmann, Daniele Pietropolli, Martin Elmiger, and Michael Barry.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM150.jpg
Bertolini drives the break on.

The breakaway, which worked very hard, reached the first of 3 mountain sprints with a 4'03" lead over the peloton.

The breakaway managed to keep a lead over three of the first hills of the day. If they could get over the last hill ahead, they would surely fight it out for the victory. However, one rider, Leonardo Giordani (Ceramica), had other thoughts as he attacked the break just before the last rise.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/PCM151.jpg
Giordani trying for the stage win, attacking with 8km left.

No one in the break could follow the Ceramica rider, and were shortly swallowed up by the charging peloton.

Giordani managed to survive for the last few kilometers to take the win, just ahead of a sprinting Daniele Bennati. Ginnani came in 5th overall. There are no pictures because the cameraman was being inattentive Wink
