ISD's Giovanni Visconti won a tight sprint in La Garde to take the second stage of the GP Meiterraneen and move up into second overall thanks to the time bonuses.
On a course featuring just one mainly shallow climb and a long descent all the way to the finish, a bunch sprint was never going to be in doubt although the obligatory escape gave it a go anyway. The 12 man group, featuring Pingitore from the new Film 4-Asahi team, managed to build a maximum lead of 6'30" and the peloton nearly left it too late to catch them.
With the escape comprising of riders from 12 different teams, those left behind - namely FDJ, ISD and BBox - found themselves short of helpful allies for the chase but their quality showed with BBox pushing the pace to defend Fedrigo's yellow jersey. Smelling blood and with the escape back in view again, ISD took over the work with 20km to go, catching the escape with just under 8km and setting up their sprint train.
Still, their best laid plans were nearly ruined when a spirited attack from the Japanese rider Fumiyuki Beppu, 6km out, nearly caught them all out. However the Film 4 rider was caught with 1.6km to go and the sprinters swept past, with Visconti proving the strongest on the day.

Whoo! My day's plans worked. No polka jersey challengers went with the escape but I told Pingu to go and join it if he felt up for it today. It was a great run out for him and he even managed to help out his teammate and countryman by taking the maximum points in the mountain sprint. Good on him!
Guerrieri keeps the mountains jersey for another day but tomorrow is gonna be a whole new ball game for him. There's a steady flow of mountain points tomorrow so we'll try to get Guerrieri into the break and see how long it can last.
Sky have the money but the other Brits kept the passion.

This ain't gonna go down well with the sponsors.
So, last night most of the Film4-Asahi staff and all the riders went to the hotel bar which was hosting a karaoke night.
Beppu, Arashiro and Takeshison, as well as our masseur Yuki "Magic Fingers" Kondo were all keen to school us Europeans in the art of singing.
So anyway we were having a great time, singing away, in good spirits after an enjoyable ride today and with Guerrieri and Pingu happy after being involved in the action these last two days....When quietly ISD assistant team manager Bogdan Bondarev walked through the door and headed for the bar.
Sadly this coincided with a rather over-exuberant rendition of Tom Jones' "Delilah" by yours truly and I tumbled backwards, smacking the microphone square into Bondarev's nose. Instantly blood is pouring out of it and Bondarev is shouting all kinda of weird foreign stuff. Takeshison comes to my rescue, pulling me away but suddenly an army of ISD soigneurs charged out of nowhere to defend their beloved man and things turned a big ugly.
To cut a long story short, Takeshison and I have just left a dingy French prison cell, a couple of black eyes between us, cameras flashing in our faces from over-excited press, and the start of stage 3 just a couple of hours away.

A stage to put tears in the eyes of us smaller teams. The bigwig internet types have Roche as a possible chance at snatching something on this stage but I'm happy with him just staying with the front group to the finish.
As for the rest of the lads, hopefully Guerrieri can get into the break and pick up some mountain points to consolidate...The rest of them? Good luck. The Japanese lads should do okay as long as their karaoke exploits last night haven't left them tired.
Anyway, Guerrieri goes with the early break attempts but the first two can't get away so I have to pull him back to the peloton to rest up a bit. Over the first climb and De Wit and Lonergan have been dropped already - I'm sure the long day ahead of them will be lovely.
Meanwhile Guerrieri has rested up and so he hares off, brdging over to the lead group between the first and second mountains checkpoint.
Sadly he's shattered and can't compete for mountain 2. Even worse news for our plucky young Italian, Pidgornyy decides to go it alone, splintering the lead group and building up a huge lead over the main race.
Over mountain number 3 and it looks that the Pigeon will be the new mountains leader. Curses. His day a failure, Guerrieri sits up and is caught at 66km, Pingu and Kenno pop like overcooked sausages just two km later and will complete the stage at their own pace.
By 50km the peloton is down to 71 riders, make that 70 as Guerrieri explodes messily and rolls backwards down the hill.
Suddenly Moncoutie, Fedrigo and Dessel make their attack. I was really hoping that they'd just slowly up the pace and drain out the filler from the peloton but it looks like the strong men are going. Roche counters and finds himself up the road in a group with Arroyo, Arrieta, Moncoutie, Ferrara and Dessel. Fedrigo pushes clear to chase Pidgornny who is surely too far ahead now. He's still got a 3'53" lead over the elite group with 34km to go.
Geslin joins the group as he leads a renewed break with Arroyo and Fedrigo. Roche and Visconti chase as the peloton close in.
In the end Pidgornny proves to be the man to beat and takes a huge win. One by one the chasers come home and while he's lost some serious time to finish 6th, I'm very happy with Roche who quickly opened some serious time just by pushing up his work rate while going up the final climb. Moncoutie couldn't stick with him. ...Because I was running late for my plane.
Ugh, one of these days I'll wake up early enough. This sport sucks for lie-ins...I can't remember the last time I could switch off the alarm and roll back over for some more sleep. Anyway, off to Oman today to catch the tour over there and our powerful TTers. I've got sneaky strategies for that race which I'll finalise on the plane itself...but trust me, it's sneaky.
So I left the team in France in the capable hands of my brother-from-another-mother Takeshi Takeshison. He knew the deal. With two flaccid (or is that placid?) stages and only 6 more mountain points available we weren't gonna leave the Med with a jersey but still, there was plenty we could do to increase our team (and sponsor) name more than just having fights with randoms.
So anyway, I only got e-mailed two photos from the stage. Not really surprising seeing how flat it was. Utterly formulaic.
a) A Bunch gets away (including Beppu).
b) They build a gap of up to seven and a half minutes.
c) The peloton starts chasing from the half way point, catching them 30km from the end.
d) Peloton build a high pace.
e) Sprint finish for the strong teams to contest.
f) Bonnet (BBox) wins.
Speaking on Skype when I landed in Oman though it turns out that Fumiyuki is furious. As the break is getting caught he sees tired faces around him. Nairo Quintana from Cafe de Colombia attacks from the break so Beppu follows him. They open a minute and a half on the break group and then Quintana refuses to do any work, just sucking on Beppu's wheel. He waves him through, shouts back at him to help...Beppu believes that if he had helped they COULD have stayed away.
As it was, Beppu attacks him, opens a few metres and forces Quintana to work for himself. Finally he catches up to Beppu and just sits on him again. Eventually, with the group catching them, Beppu just sits up and gives in for the stage. The lad was furious, and it takes a lot to upset a Japanese rider.
Anyway, no change in the overall and Arashiro was pleased to be up competing in the sprint, although he faded a bit over the last few metres.

I got the call late evening Oman time from Takeshi. Unsurprisingly we hadn't made some kind of incredible and miraculous turnaround into the yellow jersey but we HAD caused some carnage and panic in the peloton that day. Perfect.
It all started early on when five Caisse d'Epargne riders inexplicably fell out of the peloton. Harbouring a personal vendetta against the Spanish team (just like myself in fact!) Takeshi had got our riders - Lonergan in particular - to the front and pushed hard. I'd told him that I wanted mini challenges for the riders to make up for an otherwise dead stage...And so this was perfect.
We didn't make any friends with the Caisse though and they were reportedly very upset as none of their five riders were challenging for overall (Soler was 25th overall) but they didn't make it back into the group by the finish and so had to ride, angrily and frustratedly, behind the group the whole stage. Mwahahaha.
Meanwhile Guerrieri decided to go into the day's attack for old time's sake but with the high pace of the peloton it was doomed from the start and so he barely did any work, therefore able to remain with the quickly-moving pack as it pushed to the finish.
Our high pace on the front of the peloton prevented attacks which suited us...We had nothing to defend but treated it like a high effort endurance training day. Lonergan, De Wit and Kennaugh all took their turns at the front until 40km from the end when the riders hit one of the small late climbs in the stage and BOOOOOM!
No, not Millar falling off his bike again, he's here with me in Oman...Roche took off! The pace slowed as they got to the hill and he took his chance to go for a famous and gutsy victory.
He'd built the lead to 2'33" with 30km to go before Takeshi radioed the wrong man, meaning that Beppu pushed on at his own chosen speed rather than Nicky!
Still, dunno if it made much difference to Roche. Lead down to 1'44" at 20km and just 52" at 10km as ISD took it personally and fought to defend their leader.
In the end he was caught at 4km and whoosh, off they went.
Still, not a bad day apparantly.

Hey look! A sixth place overall for Roche as well as second in the mountain classification for Guerrieri! Huzzah!
The bosses called me, pretty happy with the results but hoping for even better in Oman with our carefully selected specialized team!
Oh yeah, and our tactics....Well it's a secret but if you promise not to tell anyone....Chase down any attacks and keep things close for the final TT and get Millar the tour win. It's all flat, flat, flat and we've got power a plenty! All aboard the win-train! WHOOO WHOOO WHOOOO!

So anyway, onto the race. Stage wins might be hard to come by as there are some decent sprinters that have made the trip. Astana have turned up with Davis, van Avermaet is here and Team Sky have decided to bring some kind of all-conquering team of might and fear including Swift, Henderson, Downing and Boasson Hagen...Oh and Julian Dean is here with Garmin.
This is our first race against Astana, Sky and Garmin so I hope we can hold our own okay. Oh yeah, talking about Boasson Hagen, I just realized that he's a really good time trialist, almost as good as Millar. Boourns.
So anyway...OFF THEY GO!
Bah gawd! The peloton look a bit lost on those wide roads as a few fellas work out which direction is forwards and shoot off on a doomed attack.
Eventually a solid break forms with a gap as large as 5'05", consisting of 8 men.
Meanwhile, some kind of miracle is taking place in the pack.
MILLAR HASN'T FALLEN OVER!

Anyway, Lang and Elijzen go to help out at the front as the peloton start a steady and unworried chase on the flat, flat, flat wide roads.
3'45" at 50km, 3'06" at 40km, 1'49" at 30km, 51" at 20km and the group is caught at 15km.
Up goes the pace at the front of the peloton and boom. Sprint finish.
That Sky sprinter/time trialist/saviour of all things cycling goes and wins it.

So anyway, here I am, minding my own business in the hotel when triumphant team Sky boss David Brailsford - he who I'm not best friends with - walks into the room flanked with happy British sprinters.
They head to the bar for a bottled water or two and carefully choose the correct table to sit at, making marginal gains through their seating choices.
I'm chilling out playing a few hands of cards with a pleasantly relaxed David Millar, Julian Dean from Garmin and fun-lovin' Garmin CEO Jonathan Vaughters.
Brailsford stares at us for a while with that steel-melting gaze before heading over and "playfully" slapping my shoulder.
Uncle Brailsford then launches into a gleeful run down of his Team Sky performance in the day's stage while humbly suggesting that Film4-Asahi don't seem to have the grit, determination and edge to make it as a top team. Telling us that there was nothing we could do against the might of the Rupert Murdoch-backed Team Sky.
I winked at him. "Wanna bet?"
Then he was gone, laughing all the way back to his table.
I turned back to the lads at my table and Vaughters sighed and shrugged his shoulders.
I smiled at him.
"Hey Jonathan, it's gonna be high crosswinds tomorrow right? Make sure Julian stays near the front tomorrow....We might try something."
I turned to Millar.

After the sun, sea, sand and wide, flat roads of yesterday, we turned slightly to the left and set out on another 130km of sun, sea, sand and wide, flat roads.
Indeed, the next few days are spent dragging ourselves up and down the same stretch of road. Here is said stretch of road:
Anyway, the wind was fierce, up to 65kms, gusting and with a few key directional changes in the road as the stage wore on, my plan was looking good.
Before that though we had the 100km and two sprint bonuses to traverse. Having realised my time bonus blunder of yesterday I saw the importance of the bonuses so sent Belly out on the hunt with the break.
Five men made the break with another three bridging across a few kms later. Bellis sprinted for the first bonus, strangely the only man to do so. He picked up a tasty six seconds for it. In such a flat, repetitive tour, the importance of this bonuses could be huge, especially for us as we don't have one of the top three sprinters in attendance. I'd send Davey on the breaks but it's just too risky.
Anyway, three more men fought across the gap to make the leading group 11 as I brought my men towards the front of the peloton. The winds were gusting even more strongly as the race went on.
The break has a lead of 6 minutes at 80km to go but there's no way it's gonna survive. 5'26" at 70 and 4'38" at 60 shows a steady decrease as Bellis sprints for the second bonus and claws 12 seconds over the peloton on this stage.
I radio through to him, congratulating him and tell him to sit up and conserve energy, waiting for the peloton to catch him. The gap drops to 4'15" at 50km and then 3'18" at 40km as I bring my men to the front to push the speed up. It's just fifty seconds at 30km and just 2km later the break is caught as the peloton really starts to motor.
Just as we approach a turn the winds start to increase again and I see my moment.
Flens, Wilkinson and Millar go to the front of the group and Flens starts to bury himself.
Within seconds the peloton stretches, close to breaking point.
We hear over the radio that Sky's Henderson is struggling with most of his teammates caught towards the back of the peloton.
I tell the lads to push harder. Ricky Flens is swearing and growling frighteningly as he gives his all at the front.....
....and it's split! The crosswinds are causing havoc! The peloton splits!
WE'VE COLUMBIA'D THE TOUR OF OMAN!
All of our lads are in the front half of the peloton and we have about 60 men along for the ride! 10km to go and there's daylight as Team Sky organise a chase, but they ain't gonna catch us now as I send Millar to the front for a 10km time trial.
He opens the gap to a minute and a half over just a few km. The sprinters that did make it across start to eye eachother up as we enter the last few kms. Julian Dean heeded my warning and is still there but UGH, Boasson-Hagen managed to survive up the front too! He's pretty much the only Sky rider who did though! Dall'Antonia swings across to find Dean's wheel and Millar rolls to the back of the group, his work done.
The sprinters go for it and DEAN WINS! Great news for us as his time trialling won't cause Millar any worries....Boasson-Hagen takes second to claim a few more seconds over the field but Dall'Antonia takes a fantastic fourth place! Clinging to Dean's wheel for dear life and he picks up his best performance so far in a Film4-Asahi jersey.
Check the time gap! A minute and a half over more than half the field!
The chasing bunch finish, followed by the back markers and I catch David Brailsford's eye - his face like thunder. I stick my thumb up and wink at him as he storms off to the race organiser's office.
As I'm sitting in the team bus, surrounded by exhausted but happy Film4 riders, the news comes through. Somehow Brailsford has managed to convince the organisers to give the chasing bunch the same time as our bunch! All our hard work for nothing! I have no idea what he told them but they're just saying "due to an infraction". I can't believe it! They refuse to listen to my complaints. Brailsford vanishes into the Team Sky bus.

Still, grabbing those sprint bonuses has taken Bellis up to third overall. I see a new plan formulating!
As an aside, I was soooo excited when I split the peloton, I'd been working towards it for most of the race and had picked it as possible even from the start of the stage when I saw the wind. The way it worked was so realistic and it was even better when I saw most of Sky dropped! So when the times came up and there were no time gaps I couldn't believe it! There was definitely over a minute between riders. AGGGH.
I guess no gap between individual riders was bigger than 20 seconds, enough people dropped off your group near the end and bridged the time down to the Sky group. Bad luck.
Bad luck with the split, I've thought I've done this a couple of times only to have a the back markers in the lead group get caught by the front markers of the 2nd group.
Unfortunately the 1:30 gap shown is taken from the lead rider of group 1 to the lead rider of group 2.

I'm never normally one to take pleasure in a rider's misfortune...but I'm willing to make exceptions.
It's currently 7:30pm, just a short time after the end of stage 4 and we can safely say that David Brailsford's permanent smirk has been wiped off his face.
But anyway, let's start at the very beginning.
With three mass group finishes in three days, the majority of the field are still together time wise with just a handful off the front and a few failed breakees off the back. So basically it's anyone's race to win, but no-one is going to win it with a break.
Why? Because anyone with a chance of winning a sprint won't allow it...and neither will I. Boasson-Hagen aside, Millar is still favourite for the win thanks to his time trial. The worry is that 40 seconds is one helluva deficit for anyone to pick up on EBH in a 20km TT, especially with another two stages and a chance of him gaining another 20 seconds through sprints.
...So it was time to throw caution to the wind.
Millar joined the break from the start of the stage, 6 men, up to 11 as the peloton finally let them go, certain to catch them later on.
Fortunately no-one in the break seemed interested in the time gaps so it was easy enough to pick up the 12 seconds available. Various attacks went on in the group, mainly through Janorschke who had ants in his pants all day. Ermoti went before the second sprint point so Millar had to chase him down tao take the checkpoint.
The gap got as large as 4'05" as the peloton kept tabs on Millar and it dropped to 1'30" at 40km. Davey was still feeling good so we agreed for him to stretch his legs and get some more hard riding into them ahead of the TT. He went alone at 35km before sitting up at 22km to rejoin the peloton that was closing in fast.
Top Sport and BMC upped the pace at the front, stringing out the peloton behind them when at 6km.....A FALL! FALL! Race radio is buzzing and BOASSON-HAGEN IS DOWN!
I'm slightly embarrassed to state that I pumped my fist in the car at the news. I didn't tell anyone in the team what had happened though.
Still, the sprint went off....
...and Astana's Allan Davis won, which made a nice change.
The fall makes some big changes to the race picture. Belly goes into the white jersey and into third overall. Millar goes into fifth with his biggest worry losing two minutes and his chance of the overall.

You know the problem with the Tour of Oman?
Yep, it's flat. Which makes racing relatively boring. So while we, as team managers have to get excited about every little second gained and lost, the average race fan starts to quietly yearn for terrifying Pyrenean climbs and treacherous Alpine descents...
...so I'll keep it brief.
It was the last sprint stage of Oman today with the TT tomorrow. Make no mistake, the race will be won in the TT which pretty much makes it a straight shootout between Millar (our plucky British hero who's been snatching away mid-stage seconds like a squirrel hoarding nuts) and the young hero of cycling Boasson Hagen (he who has dominated in the sprints but then fell over like a total spanner yesterday).
EBH's fall has swung it into Millar's favour but the lad can time trial and Millar's fitness isn't anything special so early in the season while EBH appears to be pretty psyched already this season.
So how did the stage go?
Well, Millar sprints like my old grandmother - the one who's approaching 90 and lives in a care home, so his best chance to take seconds today was a repeat of yesterday and take the "Jonny Bellis" method of shooting up the road, taking the checkpoints and then slinking back into the peloton as if you'd never been away.
So that's what he did.
Our best chance in the guaranteed group sprint was our Italian semi-hero Dall'Antonia who sprints like Petacchi with a dodgy knee. So the best chance was either to tell him to follow Julian Dean to the front like a crazed stalker, or organise our lads to look all exciting in some big train thing.
So that's what we did.
While Boasson-Hagen is a top quality sprinter - probably one of the ten best in the world, so his best chance of clawing back seconds was just to blow everyone away in the sprint.
So that's what he did.
Still, Dally got 5th which makes this his most successful week for us so far with a couple of top five finishes, and due to Millar's foraging for nuts, no, points...He kept his same lead over EBH.
