Not to forget the non-irish Johhny Logan representing and winning for Ireland many many many many times. There are absolutely(?) no rules regarding that you have to be from the same country you are representing. People from other countries tend to sneak in on the country's preliminaries. Cyprus sending bunch of welsh people, Lithuania's lead singer that i believe still holds a colombia citizenship and Andorra 2009 sending a danish woman.

I got into a debate with my jingoistic (half) Canadian friend about Celine Dion and the Eurovision song contest. He said she won it, I said (as she is Canadian) that she couldn't of. I apparently was wrong, as she won it representing Switzerland.
What? How the fuck could she represent Switzerland?

For my own amusement I have a personal ongoing top 10 worst songs in the history of the universe list that I keep regularly updated. (Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm strange)
I was seriously considering the inclusion of a couple of songs from today, but competition is hard. Besides, the day anyone creates a song that pushes Starships's "We built this city" of the throne, the universe would probably implode out of shame anyway.
Seriously, "We built this city" as the worst song ever? "I will survive"/"girls just wanna have fun" (same song different words) are leagues above (or actually below).
About ESC, I only watched (parts of) the firs semifinal, and noen of these songs are closed to being the worst song ever. Yes, it's shit all over (I couldn't remember one song I wanted to listen to again), bur as it is so shit, you won't ever have to suffer through these songs again, not even the winner (unless you are so unlucky to win the thing).
Fcuk, I bloody hate the thing, and as I live in Oslo, it's actually different to get away from it. I cannot believe why there are such interest in this thing as the quality of the music and the artists really is crap. I really hope it's not such a big thing in Europe as it seesm to be in Scandinavia.
Well, the reasons for my hate of "We built this city", apart from the obvious complete disregard of melody, harmony and everything else that makes up music, is the hypocricy of the song.
Basically it's a song about how corporate money destroyed rock in the early 80's... performed by a prime example of a band that had chosen the road of corporate dollars themselves.
The lyrics appear to stress the importance of an earlier incarnation of the band named Jefferson Airplane and their position in the San Francisco scene of the 60's. Yet the song was actually written by an Englishman about L.A in the 70's.
But one of the worst parts is when the guy says "Who cares, they’re always changing corporation names", this from a band who had already changed their name three times. Even worse; by this point, not a single one of the original members actually remained.......
Anyway, yeah, there is an enormous amount of rubbish to choose from and everyone has their personal opinion. Deadpool's song is also a highly worthy candidate.
As for why some people like ESC, it's not about the music at all, it's about glamour, the dancing, the dresses of the female singers... Most music today is about that already, add rivalry between nations and you have a winner recipe.
Reminds me of something.. I believe it was Maynard, front man of Tool who said it once; "Music is dead, luckily we're into necrophilia"
Yeah, the BBC linked to that the other day.
They did something similar last year too. Interesting to see the bookies agree with google on the favourite.
There's no point slapping a schleck - Sean Kelly on "Who needs a slap"

A) I cant understand what it is youre trying to say (no amount of exclamation marks will change that)
B) Its the basic principle of Eurovsion, you cant vote for your own country
Never mind the fact that you didnt allocate all your points

The problem is that the music in ESC is more or less pure crap. I admit that I am a rock'n'roll man myself, but I'm still able to enjoy a good song indipendent of genre. Right now it's mostly pompous power ballads written by second rate songwriters for third rate artist, and I haven't heard an interesting song the last three times I've watched it (last years winner at least had a rather catch theme, but it's still incredibly annoying after about 45 seconds (like any U2 song basically)).
And if it's not a pompous power ballad it's normally some extremely outdatet eurotechno like what Snap did (a lot better) in the 90s.
And this we gave up the world cup for (the norwegian national broadcaster had to sell the rights so that they could pay for the shit).ø
Most music today is far better, you can't keep that out of the equation

I'd say go for it.
Best odds I've found for her are at 3.42, and the songs seams to fit a very wide demographic.
The Azerbaijani singer whom the bookies seam to have as a slight favorite will, on the other hand, will almost exclusively be voted uppon by 13-16yo girls with daddy issues. She also missed almost every single note yesterday. (then again, regarding that latter one, I have a feeling few people will even notice )
