The third stage is the first stage that isn't made for the pure sprinters. Freire seems to be the big favorite for this one as well, but our Aussie puncheur, Simon Gerrans, could also have a nice shot at winning today's stage
Some important riders got away in today's breakaway. Trofimov, Hulsmans and Steensen were in the leading group and at the half of the stage they had an important advantage over the pack that might let them fight for the stage win today. Buffaz was for the second time in a breakaway in this race and winning the only categorized climb of the day made him have a real chance at the King of the Mountains jersey, with 21 points won so far, the same amount Arrieta has
Even though at some point of the race they had a nice chance to beat the pack today almost all the escapes were caught on the final ascents. With just 7 kilometers left Gerrans made his move and got away from the pack
Inside the last 5 kilometers Gerrans caught the only escape still left on the road, who was the Russian young gun, Yuri Trofimov
In the pack Freire and Farrar seem to have got some good positions for the uphill sprint. There are some bad news from Sky there as only Arvesen and Nordhaug are able to hang on in the pack. Sutton, Henderson, Downing and Hayman had lost the contact with the main group of the race.
Simon had no problems passing a tired Trofimov in the sprint and the Russian doesn't seem to be the main threat for Gerrans anymore
The main threat now are the riders that are leading the pack, Freire, Geslin, Plaza and Chavanel who caught Trofimov inside the last kilometer and are pushing quite hard in the last meters of the climb
But Gerrans managed to hang on and bring Team Sky the second win of the season! Freire got the second place in front of Geslin, and got back the leader's jersey, which he lost to Farrar in the previous stage. Sutton and Henderson lost more than 3 minutes today and that means that their race for the overall rankings is over.

Thanks. Winning the overall is quite hard since Freire is also winning bonifation seconds in the mass sprints.

After an uphill finish we are back to the stages made for the sprinters, but only for a day as tomorrow we are going to ride the Willunga stage where this year's overall winner could be decided. For today's stage Freire and Farrar are again the main favorites, with the Spanish having a little advantage since he is wearing the leader's jersey
Kuschynski was the last right to be caught from a large breakaway group. At the start of the stage neither Arrieta or Buffaz showed interesting in the KoM points, which were won by Lastras, who also has now a nice chance to be the best climber in this year's race
In the previous sprints Sutton was our main sprinter, but this time it's Henderson's turn to dream at a stage win. And it might even happen as once again Arvesen shows very good leading - out skills
When the sprint started Arvesen put our 2 main sprinters in very good position, having an advantage of a few meters in front of Farrar's lead - out man, Fischer
With 2 kilometers before the finish Sutton took the lead and it was looking really good for Henderson as he was following perfectly the Aussie Champion's wheel
But quite surprising Henderson had problems taking the lead from Sutton and we lost the lead of the race, with Farrar coming really fast
Inside the last kilometer the American sprinter looked settle to take his second stage win in this race even though Goss and Freire were right behind him
Freire threw his bike in the last meters to beat Farrar for onle a few centimeters, which means that the Spaniard is now the only rider with 2 wins. The former World Champion extended his lead, as we are heading to the decisive 5th stage, while Henderson missed a nice chance today finishing just 11th

Good luck in Willunga, a well timed attack is the key to that one.
Also your stage 3 went similar to my career, but i won by 43 seconds, and got a 3rd for Sutton

and well I guess I'm not as good as you are but in that stage it was pretty hard to keep Sutton in the pack, as there the speed was quite high since some of the escapes were still in front

This year the Willunga stage is rated as flat but it's still the queen stage of the race since we are going to pass 2 times the Willunga Hill, the longest and steepest climb of Tour Down Under. This could be a good opportunity for Gerrans to try his last chance for the overall win but the place on the podium that he has at the moment is also a very good achievement
Quite a few escapes today but from them 2 names should really be mentioned: Luis Leon Sanchez, the Caisse d'Epargne leader and Mickael Buffaz. The last one managed to gain a few points on the first pass of the Willunga Hill, which should secure him the King of the Mountains jersey
Luis Leon Sanchez was clearly the strongest rider in the breakaway and passed the second time Willunga Hill in a solo lead, with almost 2 minutes in front of the pack, while almost all the other escapes were caught
In the pack no one was strong enough to make the difference on the Willunga Hill, but Gerrans tries something with 7 kilometers left. This might be his last chance for the overall rankings
After an amazing effort he managed to make a little gap between him and the back but he clearly needs more than that
Behind him, Astana and Footon are the fastest trains. The Garmin riders seem to have been beaten there, while Freire is following the Footon's wheel
In front Sanchez had no problems defending of advantage of 2 minutes in the last 20 kilometers of the race and he claims the first win of the season for Caisse d'Epargne
Gerrans wasn't able to hang on by himself in front of the pack and he was caught inside the last kilometer by a pack lead by Pedersen and Freire
Freire got the second place today and with the new bonification seconds he almost secured his overall win even if he will not be on the podium tomorrow. Gerrans finished only 6th today but the podium place in the overall rankings seems secured, which would end a great race for him, where he also managed a stage win
