Hugely common practice though, sadly but very common now ....
funny, i didn't hear it happening in Turin, or is it some sort of North American thing?

The Canadian officials were not coy in telling our media that this was pay-back time....petty, yes...but sad for day for Nodar Kumaritashvili's family.
I hope they are fully ashamed then, the responsability for this loss of life is on them.

Yes, something petty between the North American's and feeling ashamed isn't going to help...I am at a loss as to what can...I am sure our politicians will use it to attack the government in our house of commons. Ultimately it will be our PM's fault.
Good, it needs to fall on somebody. I can't see tomorrow's luge event carrying on as normal, it'll be delayed or something.

Joint Statement from IOC, VANOC and FIL
It is with great regret that we confirm the death of the Georgian luge athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili, during the final training session at the Whistler Sliding Centre, this morning.
Mr Kumaritashvili died after crashing on the last corner of the course during training. Doctors were unable to revive the athlete, who died in hospital.
“Our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete. The whole Olympic Family is struck by this tragedy, which clearly casts a shadow over these Games”, said the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge.
“We are deeply struck by this tragedy and join the IOC in extending our condolences to the family, friends and teammates of this athlete, who came to Vancouver to follow his Olympic dream”, said John Furlong, the CEO of VANOC, the Games Organising Committee.
For the International Luge Federation, President Josef Fendt said: “This is a terrible accident. This is the gravest thing that can happen in sport, and our thoughts and those of the ‘luge family’, are naturally with those touched by this event.”
An investigation is underway into the circumstances of the accident. Training was suspended and technical officials are now trying to establish the causes.

RIP - Very, very sad to have such an accident, just before your dream, the thing you've worked for your whole life, is about to become truth.
On the other hand, I can't help thinking lude is one of the craziest sports around. I can't ever imagine myself so stupid that I'll go down an ice track with 100km/h+ speeds, head first... (or is that the other version of the sport??)
edit2; yeah, it's skeleton I was thinking about.

Right, very important. Only reveal the spoiler if you feel up to it. It's an image of the crash. Once again, only reveal if you feel like you can really handle it. (emotionally)

Fuck
It looks like that wall was about a foot too short to catch him (I heard he flew over it and into a rail), that sucks. |

Alpine Skiing postponed until Monday due to poor weather.
Made my dilema easier, Ski Jumping for me.

Too bad. Ski jumping sucks while Alpine Skiing is pretty cool.
Anyway, I'll be looking speed skating 5km for men anyway which starts shortly after the skiing. Sven Kramer should be bringing our first gold medal tonight. |

I did start watching that too, simply because there was nothing else... but got bored within 15 minutes |

I'm looking forward to the freestyle Skiing events. Moguls, Ski Cross and the Snowboard cross too.
I'll probably watch a bit of Ice Hockey, Alpine Skiing and most likely a little bobsleigh. I watch winter sports every 4 years, might as well make the most of it.

Same here. Shorttrack is pretty fast, which makes it cool to watch I think. Further I'll be looking forward to the Ice Hockey finale (Canada really has to win it ), maybe a bit of biathlon, speed skating of course (since thats what we Dutch do best) and most of the sutff you mentioned.
I've got a week free from school now, so thats pretty well timed |
