Given the various comments about haematocrit I thought I'd give people a real world example. A few years back when I was at medical school I was able to carry out tests to find out my values. They varied between 43 and 52.
Many things can influence the values for any one person, so looking at the figure without context is meaningless on most occasions.
The effects of drugs themselves are often not directly for performance, but to improve recovery. However, people do sometimes label certain drugs as being suited for specific sports, such as EPO for endurance. Of course the fact that a number of Olympic 100 metre runners have been found out as EPO users blows that assumption out of the water.

Which is why no one does that. The variations are what's suspicious.

Isso, you got wattage numbers? I remember our discussion before the tour about lance not doping this time around. I'm curious to see the numbers. I told you i didn't think he would dope because he has too much to lose...today showed he isn't up to snuff...but still respectable... |

Serbia's national coach has been arrested along with 12 pro riders. Supposedly, they've been using a new type of EPO.
There's no names yet, but it'd be fun if Ivan Stevic had been caught again - what would UCI do? Give him another life time suspension?
Was it young promise riders who they have given vitamins? Is it Sella or Rebillin who have talked?
Davide Rebellin, Emanuele Sella, Matteo Priamo, Andrea Moletta, Ricco, Julio Munoz, Novembrini, Sasa Gajicic and Francesco Revere, while the three sports managers Simone Mori former Amica Chips, Donato Giuliani (National Electric Hadimec) and Rodolfo Boulders (Massi)(Team Boulders). From https://sportitali...px?id=5370 and Mellow Velo
Latest news on this case is that it's Sella who tipped the police about this. It's said that 30 people are involved in what the Italian media is calling Via Col Doping.
It's also said that Rodolfo Massi, for those who remember who he is, is involved.
Was 4 riders from Nazionale Elettronica New Slot - Hadimec. The others on that team "must" be clean.
O and nice nick name Rodolfo Massi had Il Farmacista.

The problem is that variations have to be looked in context for the individual, as the fact there is a variation isn't necessarily suspicious. As I explained previously, as an example, mine varies between the low 40s and the low 50s. They can vary greatly for everyone depending on a number of factors. If for example it doesn't drop or even increases during a tour that is suspicious. So a lack of variation can actually be a bigger sign of doping than a variation.
Regarding 100 metre runners, quite a few have indeed been found out as EPO users. I think the Balco guy said at one point that all the runners under him were on it, and one Olympics he said 5 of his runners were in the final (all doped).

Yep, look at Victor Conte and what he has said, he supplied all sorts of athlete in all sorts of sports with EPO (along with other types of doping products).
Also, fun trivia fact, Victor Conte was the bass player for Tower of Power back in the 70's. |

Matschiner said that a still active former gerolsteiner riders (which are at least 1 german) received during the Tour 2007 and before the Tour 2008 Dynepo, the german rider received each times 2 packets of Dynepo and received that in Rosenheim (before the Tour 2008, 2007 he received that during the Tour)
So these are the TDF 2007 Gerolsteiner riders
Stefan Schumacher
Heinrich Haussler
Robert Förster
Markus Fothen
Fabian Wegmann
Ronny Scholz
Sven Krauss
Bernie Kohl
Peter Wrolich
I think the "Aussie" could it be
If not
Bye bye Milram

Nah, it wouldn't mean bye, bye Cervelo. But another doper at a German team would be too much for Milram. |

Wrölich didn't ride the Tour in 2007. It's one of the other ones.
Probably Wegmann. Fighting for the win at the Amstel and Lombardia? Ich not think so. |

I think with "Aussie" he was referring to half-australien Heinrich Haussler.
At least wackojackohighcliffe (and me) interpreted it that way

I wasn't adressing anyone's opinion. Rin posted the list of riders on Gerolsteiner that rode the 2007 Tour and I responded that it can't have been Wrölich, so he can take Wrölich off the list. |
