Fuglsang attacked at the bottom of the last climb of the day and Alaphilippe was quick to follow him. The Dane was not happy working with Alaphilippe and they were reeled back in

i.imgur.com/1nItGiO.jpg

Only to attack once again as we approached the summit. This time it was Alaphilippe who made the first moved, followed by Fuglsang. This time, they also had Sam Oomen with them

i.imgur.com/cPNKEyZ.jpg

Oomen was no strong enough to keep up with them and was dropped right before the top. Fuglsang tried get a gap to the Frenchman on the downhill but Julian was always quick to react and this led to Fuglsang basically leading him out on the flat section before the finish

i.imgur.com/caFZzbs.jpg

And this resulted in quite an easy sprint for Alaphilippe and the Quick Step rider becomes the World Champion! To be fair, they would have had the jersey either way next year as Fuglsang will be joining them. Behind them, Oomen was caught on the downhill by Jungels, who beat him in the sprint for 3rd. The podium is made up of entire 2021 Quick Step riders

Drama in the Jumbo camp as Van Poppel lost the wheel of his team - mates right as the sprint was about to start. It's very unlikely that he will be able to defend the crown he gained last year

Jansen tried to save face for Jumbo, but all he could do was a third place, with a very fast Caleb Ewan being first across the finish line to claim a late season victory

Wow already at the end of another season (minus a few small races to go) Smile

Alaphilippe is so strong, and Fuglsang and Jungels making it a Quickstep top 3 basically is just insane. They will be quite the team to beat next year.

Quite an interesting profile for this year's Lombardia. Anyone who wants to avoid a sprint will have to attack a long way from home.

Fuglsang can't sit around and wait for a sprint with Alaphilippe in the form displayed at the World's. He attacked on the penultimate climb of the day, with more than 30 kilometres left from the race

i.imgur.com/8AtTdrH.jpg

On the downhill three other attackers caught up to him: the fresh World Champion, Alaphilippe, Marc Soler and Richard Carapaz. It looks like the climbers might play a role today too

i.imgur.com/oPaoZEz.jpg

Not for long though as Fuglsang attacked again on the next climb, leaving those two behind. Only Alaphilippe is able to follow him, but this can't be good news for Astana rider, who is starting to have World's flashbacks

i.imgur.com/rO3n64w.jpg

This time it was Alaphilippe who led out the way in the sprint and even though it was a bit closer there was still nothing to do for Fuglsang to beat his future team - mate. If you can't beat them, join them, right? A very special win for Alaphilippe who wins his first race in the rainbow jersey.

Wow awesome race for Alaph. I guess you werent targeting the race that much, but I must say, Fulgsang and Alaph must be in great form atm. Quite realistic results I think.

alexkr00
Yeah, only Gesink had this set as an objective, but he's accusing some tiredness so his fitness levels and daily form isn't really great. His secondary stats are also already in decline. And most of the guys that peaked in the Vuelta are already declining. Pretty pleased with Bouwman's result though (75 mo/73 hill).

Alaphilippe looks amazing in that Deceuninck rainbow jersey Grin

The race marked Dylan Groenewegen's return to racing after a disappointing Tour de France in July and also the last race of Maarten Wynants' career. The Belgian made it the most of his last professional race as he created a split in the closing kilometres which saw the pack being reduced to about 25 riders.

Jumbo were represented very well in the group and set things up perfectly for Groenewegen, but having not raced for such a long time took its toll and Dylan lost the win to his compatriot, Fabio Jakobsen, in what was a very close sprint.

Van Poppel took a very impressive win last year, but we won't be seeing a repeat of that as he was not able to hang on with the strongest riders in the race on the last climb of the route.

Grosu could have profited of this situation, but he was only in the second group at the top of the climb and wasted all his energy in chasing down the lead group which made it impossible for him to have a proper sprint.

Bouwman, who was in the first group at the top of the last climb saved faces for Jumbo by finishing on the podium in a sprint won by Chris Harper.

Groenewegen won three of the five mass sprints on his way on taking the overall win two years in a row in the final race of the season in China. The queen stage went to the breakaway, but no one there posed a threat to the GC, while Groenewegen safely finished in a group with the GC contenders which contained about 30 riders

Hmm, interesting that Jakobsen's Prologue is so high. Did he improve or was he always that good? It doesnt look like his Sprint stats have gone up much.

Nice way to end the season with some good results though. Groenewegen dominated.

alexkr00
Indeed, Jakobsen's sprint to be pretty much the same. His prologue stat has improved from 74 though. Not sure if he hit the max with the sprint or switching to Cofidis has been a bad move in his career. Results wise it definitely has been.

A much hillier route for this year New Zealand's championships meant Bennett's mission was easier than usual as he managed to win the tile for three years in a row. Bevin's team change seems to have affected him as he fails to do the same in the time - trial race. Instead, it was Bennett who took a surprising win to become double Champion!

Willunga Hill is back as a stage finish in this year's Tour Down Under, which makes it virtually impossible for Van Poppel to repeat last year's feast where he benefited from a very sprinter friendly route.

The race started perfectly for the home fans favorite as Michael Matthews took the win in the opening stage. It would be his only stage win though, with the Aussie failing to even reach the podium in any of the following sprints, one of which was won by Danny Van Poppel.

Van Poppel sprinted past the home fans favorites to take his stage win

Bennett and Ulissi attacked on the last climb of the third stage, but they would barely hang on to take the first two places as the pack caught up to them right before the finish line.

Bennett was once again in the spotlight in the queen stage, but there was no way anyone was keeping up with Alaphilippe that day, who went on to take a solo win. Georgie led home the chasing group, which contained Schachmann, Lambrecht and Matthews, to take second in the stage and the general classification.

We had a very windy race with the roads being so close to the ocean, especially in the last half of the race, which made it for a very hectic finale, where Van Poppel lost the contact with his lead - out train and the opportunity to repeat last year's victory.

It was Aeroflot's Rick Zabel who put in an amazingly fast sprint to take the win. Quite an impressive start of the season for the new team with Haller also taking a stage win in Santos Tour Down Under.

An interesting start of the race with the new Deceuninck riders, Roglic and Dumoulin making it a 1-2 in the opening time - trial. Nibali finished third and would take over the yellow jersey in the very next stage, the only top mountain finish of the race.

Nibali wins the queen stage and takes the overall lead

The next 3 stages were as good as they come for Jumbo, with Groenewegen winning both mass sprints from the third and fifth stage. In the fourth stage, Bennett attacked on the last climb of the day, but the gap that he got was only enough for the stage win and not the overall win, who went to Nibali.

A perfect start for Groenewegen's season

Looks like Bennett has had a great start to the season so far. The NC RR and TT titles, and then great results Down Under and in Spain. Im sure he'll be annoyed its two 2nd places and not first though.

alexkr00
There was no way Bennett could have stopped Alaphilippe in Australia. In Comunitat Valenciana perhaps he could have done a little bit better, but 11 of the 13 seconds that separated him from Nibali in the end were lost in the time - trial. That's where the race was lost despite Bennett finishin inside the top 10.
