Vuelta a Espana - Stage 7
After a rest day, it's time for the mountains in the Vuelta. Gerdeman isn't going to get a lot of help today, but he's looking extremely strong so far this race.
The break didn't have any great climbers in it, so we let them go. Others in the pelaton are a bit irked that we aren't taking control of the race, but we're simply telling them that we're okay with anyone in the break winning by a large margin and taking the jersey.
In the end, some of the other leading teams were concerned and upped the pace a bit. As we reached the top of the climb at the 147 kilometer mark, Pinotti was beginning to struggle. It was clear Gerdeman would be by himself soon, so he decided he'd rather be by himself at the front... and attacked.
After a brief downhill, there was another short ascent before the long downhill to the base of the final climb. Anton and Menchov joined Gerdeman in the lead here, while a chase forms.
The long downhill gobbles up the chase however, and the three leaders start the final climb ahead of an accelerating pelaton.
Gerdeman radios in and lets us know he's not feeling tired at all. In fact he says he feels on top of the world! (+5!!!) So we tell Linus to put the pedal down.
Linus ups the tempo.... and Anton falters!
And he keeps the tempo going.... Menchov is laboring... and Menchov falls off Gerdeman's wheel!
Linus Gerdeman takes the stage! His lead increases to nearly 3 and a half minutes in the overall standings.

Deutchland Tour - Stage 9
The final stage of the Deutchland tour is classified as flat... but Ciolek will have no chance in this kind of terrain. Kirchen will try to take this sprint.
As the sprint started, Kirchen was in good position, riding Elminger's wheel. Sammy Sanchez was rocketing through the pack though.
Kirchen came out from behind Elminger and made his run, but Sammy kept coming.... can Kim hold him off?
We still can't tell. And we wait for the officials to determine the result.... KIM KIRCHEN WINS THE STAGE!
Incredible finish, and we meet the sponsor goal of a top 5 in the race. Great racing by Kim... but he's not done yet. We'll try to keep his form up so he can mke a run at the Worlds.

Vattenfall Cyclassics
One of the least difficult classics races on the schedule. Kirchen is our leader here as well, but if we can get Ciolek to the finish for a sprint he could do well. At 250 kilometers though, this will test the stamina of all the riders.
There wasn't a lot of action early and the break that went was very weak and was brought in WELL before the finish. We lost Ciolek with the pace, so when Hoste attacked Kirchen followed, not feeling good about a mass sprint. Ballan and Scherlinx go as well.
But Hoste keeps his advantage. The other two plus Elminger and Arverson are pushing hard to try to bridge.
Paolo Bettini bridges the gap prior to the sprint starting. Hoste has a big advantage though.
But Hoste waits a bit to start his sprint.... Bettini gets close... does he have enough room?
Paolo Bettini! The world champion show's he's coming into form at just the right time to win it again. Kirchen takes third in the sprint.

Okay... I've now finally caught up with my playing, so updates won't come quite as frequently. I should get through with the 2008 season pretty quickly though. Once the tour de pologne is finished I'll pretty much just have the Vuelta (and a few 1-days to keep some guys form up for the World Championships) then just a few scattered races in October to finish up the season. (no more than one a day).
I've decided to up the difficulty to extreme for 2009. With Contador added and Ulissi having progressed like he has I think it's probably necessary. I'll also be shifting the focus of the team from classics and sprints to more of a stage race focus... which I think you can probably see from my signings. I'm also looking to see if I can sign a US rider of note in the transfer season. I'll have to cut someone to make room, but I feel like without Hincapie I'm lacking a bit in US guys on a US team.
I plan on a LONG offseason report as well, both wrapping up the season for my team and talking about the 2009 lineups for all the big boys. I'll also be changing the team to Team Columbia for 2009 (I'll probably leave the initials as THR so I don't screw anything up by accident in the DB though). I'm hoping someone will get me a jersey made pretty quickly after it's realeased on July third so I don't have to race too long in the High Road duds.
If anyone has particular requests that I might be able to handle in the off season or planning for the 2009 season, let me know.
**edit** one other change I'll be making is dropping Greipel's sprint down from 78 to 77. I like him as a rider, but I'm not comfortable with him having a faster sprint then Cavendish or Ciolek.

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 8
This mountain stage isn't quite as steep towards the finish as stage 7, but still should allow some time to be gained or lost.
Things were quiet over the first 3 climbs. As the gradient increased on the final climb, Linus got tired of waiting and made a move.
A lead group formed with Cobo, Anton, Rubiera, and Soler with Gerdeman, Menchov closing the gap from behind.
Gerdeman went to the front and put the hammer down. Only Cobo could keep up.
But Linus just kept up the pace. Eventually Cobo cracked as well.
And Linus Gerdeman wins the stage! Cobo follows close behind for second.
And a minute later Anton leads the chase group across.
It was a relatively small victory today, but still more time is added to Linus's lead. Great riding by the young German.

nice win, it would have been a much tighter race had that been played in the new PCM, much more attacks and a more exiting finish. But anyway good result and keep up the good work

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 9
With a downhill leading to the finish, things might come together at the end and keep anyone from getting too much time. Still, we'll be keeping Gerdemann at the front and see what we can do.
In a bit of a suprise, Soler and Astarloa attack near the summitt of the first climb and go on a day long break. We had to work some since Soler wasn't too far back, but we didn't have the strength to bring him in.
With Soler still ahead and the team faltering, Linus had to make an attack with 60km to go.
And after some hard riding Gerdemann caught Soler...
and quickly left him behind.
Soler dropped back to the pelaton and the other favorites attacked on the last climb. Gerdemann still had a solid lead however.
And Linus stays ahead in the descent. Another win for Linus Gerdemann!
Menchov brings the chase across the line again. Another minute up for Gerdemann, things are looking good.

It's amazing what a difference proper planning of a season makes. Gerdemann didn't race at all until August... and everyone else in the Vuelta had 60+ race days when it began. After the TDF things have gotten a lot easier... because all the other teams are using guys who are completely worn down.
I'm thinking that even going to extreme for next season, late season races will still not be real difficult. |

Vuelta a Espana - Stage 10
A stage that is mostly downward or flat, today is one that a break might succeed in. Thinking that, we wanted to make sure we got someone in the break to avoid having to chase.
After several break attempts were pulled back, a large group finally got away. Bradley Wiggins was in it.
Brad didn't help at all, so was very fresh. The pelaton wasn't chasing hard and it appeared the break would make it. When Carlstrom made an attack, Wiggins countered easily.
And then he flew past.
Bradley Wiggins wins the stage from the break!
The Pelaton closed to the point they caught all but 3 from the break, a minute forty-two behind Wiggins.

Tour de Pologne - Stage 6
This is a key stage in the overall classification. The hills on this route will play a huge role in determining the champion. We're looking to get Lovkvist in the key break and hopefully win the stage.
The pelaton was wanting us to chase down the break all by ourselves, but we really weren't wanting to kill ourselves working for the other teams. We sent Henao on the break attempt.
Henao couldn't get company though. He was in third isolated from the leader and second place rider.
Despite us having a rider up the road, the pelaton wasn't chasing. The break got VERY far ahead, and Henao wouldn't be the race leader if they finished that way. So we decided with 3 climbs to go it was time to send Lovkvist.
And the pelaton seemed content to let him go. Still no push from the pelaton, though Lovkvist wasn't gaining more than a minute and a half. So... we sent Rogers on an attack to help him out. Sandy Casar decided to join him.
Casar and Rogers caught Lovkvist and the three started gaining on the break. First they came up on Henao and Pauriol.
And then they finally caught Cataldo of Liquigas shortly before the finish.
Just one final ascent to the finish.... High Road's three riders on one side, Casar on the other.
And Lovkvist takes it by a nose! Rogers is second and Casar third, with the Pelaton close behind.
