The first sponsor objective of the year comes with Movistar giving Dayer Quintana his first official leadership of a race. He would be supported by Mikel Nieve and Rafael Valls as the chief domestiques. The challenge would mostly come from Team Sky and Astana with other top teams either not showing up or not bringing their strongest teams. It would be interesting to see how things shape up for Movistar as they look to get used to rallying behind a new leader.
The following is a summary of stages...
Stage 1 - Flat
An uneventful stage and a poor one for Movistar. They couldn't set up a good sprint train and Lobato stood no chance of competing with the others. Sonny Colbrelli won the stage.
Stage winner - Sonny Colbrelli
Stage 2 - Flat with 3 major intermediate climbs
Another mostly flat stage and Movistar's sprinting frailties came to the fore once again. Colbrelli took two wins in a row, being the strongest in the bunch sprint once again.

Stage 3 - Moutain with downhill finish, including 3 major and 2 minor intermediate climbs
Rafael Valls tried his best to join the seven man early breakaway but wasn't successful. The break itself caught with 45 km left, before the second category 2 climb of the day. By the top of that climb, the lead group consisted of only 34 riders, when another break went away. They were caught going up the last climb as Team Sky made their move. Simon Yates and Bongiorno attacked together and left the others behind. Dayer, Nieve and David Villela from Astana were the only riders who were able to keep the Sky duo in their sights, but it wouldn't be enough. The stage ended with a Sky 1-2 and most likely had decide the outcome of the GC. Nieve lost some time going down to the finish.

Movistar - Dayer Quintana 4th, 1'7" behind, Mikele Nieve 9th, 1'36" behind
Other important results - Francesco Bongiorno 2nd, same time, David Villela 3rd, 1'7" behind
Stage 4 - Mountain with flat finish, including 4 major intermediate climbs
The stage was dominated by Movistar setting a really high pace. They managed to split up the pack into three groups at the end of the clmbs. The lead group consisted of 15 riders including Dayer and Nieve. The long flat allowed the second group to catch up and the stage ended in a bunch sprint. Ben Swift won. There were no time gaps among the leaders.

A decent race for Movistar but they missed the sponsor objective here. Dayer did a respectable job up against more seasoned competitors. The team needs to sharpen his rougher edges. He should become someone to challenge in World Tour races in the future. Team Sky's strange transfer policy looks to be working. Not a race where they're traditionally strong, this result should fill them with confidence after the departure of Froome. A good job by Eustaqiou Sanchez to get 2nd place in the Young Riders' classification.

Hilly - 2
Stage 1
A flat stage with a couple of hills for the peloton to cover. The sprinters will take the win here.
Stage 2
Although classified as a flat stage, there's enough climbs and undulations to keep a variety of riders interested. There's a chance of a breakaway surviving as well, given the profile.
Stage 3
Mostly hilly, the stage opens up into a flat portion some way before the finish line. Given the distance to the finish after the last of climbs, the sprinters shouldn't have too much of a worry keeping up with the front of the peloton.
Stage 4
Should be tougher stage than the last one, given the two 1st category climbs towards the end. The sprinters might have a difficult time keeping up here and the GC contenders would be favoured to take advantage here.
Stage 5
A flat TT with a small uphill section at the end would play into the hands of the specialists.
Stage 6
The second consecutive TT stage is almost identical to the first and should further allow the cream of the contenders to rise to the top.
Overall Assessment
The hilly stages might not have the desired impact on this race given the extensive flat sections before the finish in each of them. By the looks of the profiles, the twi ITTs should have the maximum bearing on the result here.

With the race basically one long flat, including sprint finishes and ITTs, Movistar signed up their flat specialists for this one. After his superb victory Down Under, Bryan Coquard would lead the team here in France. Ion Izagirre, Adriano Malori, Luis Leon Sanchez and Jasha Sutterlin would provide the four pronged attack by Movistar on the TTs. With none of the big names showing up, the competition would be intense and without any outright favourite to win the race. Expect the unexpected here!
The following is a summary of stage...
Stage 1 - Flat with 2 major intermediate climbs
A quiet stage to start ended with the expected bunch sprint. Thomas Boudat beat his more illustrious rivals, including Coquard who came 2nd, to win the stage.

Stage 2 - Flat with 2 major intermediate climbs
The early breakaway consisted of 19 riders and the sheer numbers threatened to be strong enough to hold out for the stage win. This wasn't the case as it was down to only 3 riders out in front with 60 km to go. There was only one breakaway rider left with 18 km to go. Bryan Coquard fell with just 15 km to go. Although he did not lose contact with the peloton, he was unable to pull himself back to the head of the pack. The attack at the finish saw a handful of riders create a time gap to the peloton, finishing 31 seconds ahead. Alexey Tsatevich won.

Stage 3 - Flat with 3 major intermediate climbs
Another stage which played out to script and ended with a bunch sprint. Coquard had to settle for 3rd place this as Tsatevich won his second stage of the race.

Stage 4 - Hilly with 3 major intermediate climbs
The early breakaway pulled out a substantial lead on the pack. Getting past the first climb of the day saw the peloton being split into two with the whole Movistar train caught out and in the latter group. They managed to pull themselves back to the peloton. There was another attack at the head of the field and they joined the surviving members of the early break. These riders were not caught and this further blew the GC wide open. Adam Stachowiack won from this group,, which finished 51 seconds ahead of the peloton.

Stage 5 - Individual Time Trial - Flat - 8.8 km
The first of two consecutive (!!) TTs went to form with Bob Jungels winning the stage and announcing himself as the favourite for the GC win. Movistar earned three top 10 finishes with Malori finishing 3rd.

Movistar - Adriano Malori 3rd, losing 29", Luis Leon Sanchez 5th, losing 34", Gorkha Izagirre 9th, losing 39"
Stage 6 - Individual Time Trial - Flat with slightly uphill finish - 10.1 km
The pre-stage favourite to take the GC did just that as Jungels edges out Janse van Rensburg to the race win, finishing 5th on the stage and 22 seconds ahead of the latter. Movistar picked up three more top 10s with Malori getting 2nd this time, and pulling himself into the top 10 overall.

Although never favourites to win here, Movistar had an up and down race. Two second and two third place finishes were good results but they couldn't challenge for the GC at all. Coquard has now been involved in 9 flat stages for the team. His performances - 3 times 2nd, 2 times 3rd, once 7th and once 9th! Has proved to be an excellent investment so far. Malori did well to get two podiums in the two ITT stages. The team is making good progress.

Some good stages here, a good race for Moviestar getting the 2nd tier riders i action. As expected not enough to challenge the GC.

A decent outing, yes. That 4th stage breakaway messed up our chances really. Otherwise the likes of Malori and Sanchez would've been in contention for the GC.

Individual Time Trial
Distance - 29.6 km
Nairo Quintana won his first ever NC ITT Gold medal on his first outing of the season. It was always going to be a battle between him and Uran for the title, and he came out on top by a mere 10 seconds, the latter settling for 2nd place.
Road Race
Terrain - Hilly with downhill finish
Nairo Quintana claimed back to back Road Race titles in his country's National Champonships to become one of the few double National Champions - both ITT and RR - in world cycling. Arredondo won silver while Sergio Henao claimed bronze.

The first one day race of the year for Movistar...
Clasica de Almeria
A very tough stage profile still saw a three man sprint up the climb to the finish with Sergey Chernetskiy crossing the line ahead of Manuel Senni and Carlos Verona. Mikel Nieve, one of the pre-race favourites, had to settle for 4th place.

Yes three more top 15 finishes to add to an impressive tally at the start of the season. Nieve just didn't have the legs on him at the end I'm afraid.
Update from another race...
Volta ao Algarve
Benat Intxausti went one position better than his finish here last season to claim the overall GC win in Portugal. He won stage 3 of this race. Movistar riders continued their rich haul, claiming three of the top 5 positions - Jesus Herrada in 3rd and Adriano Malori in 5th. Needless to say, Movistar won the team classification.

Better than expected actually, especially from Herrada and Malori!
All the riders seem to be hitting good form at the moment for the team. It will be interesting to see the performances over the next couple of weeks with Andalucia and Omloop coming up along with a couple of smaller races.
